Luka Chuppi Reviews
Luka Chuppi is a sexless romp that's inconsistent on which audience it's serving.

Even a meme conveys more about live-ins than this logic-defying, unfunny movie.

Watch Luka Chuppi for a talented cast of actors stuck with a half-baked script working very hard to give you some easy giggles.

Luka Chuppi is led by the least charismatic set of young actors.

...the writing and the treatment is so slack that the intent rises to the surface only occasionally.

Luka Chuppi isn't quite radical, let alone consistently funny, but the long walk to the altar is far less conservative than it could have been.
Two decades too late.

Luka Chuppi is a fun ride that never gets too preachy or uncomfortable for the family audience.

Watch Luka Chuppi for a dose of some good, clean fun -- much needed after all the heavy-duty stuff which has been going around in real life.

The film has its moments but you have to wait for them.
It's a light-hearted film with a scattered, almost fickle, storyline, bolstered by good performances from a sturdy cast. While you may not put a ring on this one, you can definitely live with it for a couple of hours of your life.

Luka Chuppi Movie Review: Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon deliver a blockbuster laugh riot
Luka Chuppi, starring Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon, will not blow your mind, but is a good watch if you are looking for something fun this weekend, says our review.
Listen to Story
Kartik Aaryan
Laxman Utekar's Luka Chuppi explores the concept of live-in relationships in small-town Mathura and Gwalior, where they are heavily frowned upon. However, despite having top-notch performances and hilarious moments, the film leaves much to be desired as it only manages to scratch the surface.
Guddu Shukla (Kartik Aaryan) is a star reporter at a cable news channel in Mathura. He falls in love with Rashmi Tiwari (Kriti Sanon), an intern and the daughter of the Mathura chief of the Sanskriti Suraksha Manch, a right-wing outfit that takes pride in beating up young lovers and 'upholding Indian culture'. (Anti-Romeo Squad, anyone?)
Despite being two consenting adults in love, Guddu and Rashmi barely manage to sneak in any time together, away from the prying eyes of the moral police. When he proposes marriage, she wants to get to know him properly and suggests a live-in relationship.
Guddu and Rashmi take up a 20-day assignment in Gwalior and decide to live together there. They pretend to be a newly married couple, with Rashmi wearing sindoor and a mangalsutra. Things take a hilarious turn when their families discover them living together and wrongly assume that they are actually married.
Luka Chuppi shows none of the actual challenges of a live-in relationship. Barring a fleeting conversation that Guddu cannot chop onions and Rashmi has an aversion to cleaning toilets, everything is rosy in their paradise.
Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon have an undeniably cute chemistry and deliver competent performances, although they look a bit too slick to be from a small town. However, it is Aparshakti Khurana as Guddu's best friend Abbas who steals the show with his deadpan humour. Unfortunately, Pankaj Tripathi is completely wasted in a trivial role, although he makes the most of it.
Rohan Shankar's writing flounders at times. Even though the dark satire and social commentary is on point at times - take, for instance, Rashmi's father's reaction when he learns that Abbas is a Muslim - the script suffers from some inconsistencies.
From being a spunky woman who is willing to go against society to live with her lover, Rashmi inexplicably transforms into someone who suddenly wants to rush to the altar because she cannot lie to her elders. Her dreams of a career in Delhi are quickly forgotten.
The final sequence of Luka Chuppi is also a tad disappointing. After a lot of build-up, things fall into place a bit too conveniently.
However, Luka Chuppi is filled with hilarious moments, particularly the sequence of the nosy neighbour who spies on Guddu and Rashmi. Each of their unsuccessful attempts to get married also elicit a lot of laughs.
Director Laxman Utekar captures the eccentrities of a small town to perfection and thanks to its crisp run-time, Luka Chuppi hardly has a dull moment.

Luka Chuppi Movie Review: Kartik Aaryan And Kriti Sanon's Film Plays Hide-And-Seek With Logic
Luka chuppi movie review: aparshakti khurana's sporadic appearances generate a degree of mirth, as does pankaj tripathi's performance..
Cast: Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon, Aparshakti Khurana, Vinay Pathak, Pankaj Tripathi
Director: Laxman Utekar
Rating: 2 Stars (Out Of 5)
A contrived comedy about issues that are anything but funny - the pros and cons of live-in relationships, the role of oppressive conservatism in the lives of young people, and the scourge of moral policing and political expediency - Luka Chuppi , cinematographer-director Laxman Utekar's first Hindi film, plays hide-and-seek with logic and often loses its way. The outcome, without being a total washout, is an unpersuasive romp that falters frequently owing to the superficiality of the central premise and the facile nature of the treatment of a serious theme crying out for more informed satire than scattershot humour.
Lead actors Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon are saddled with the onerous task of breathing life into situations that border on the bizarre. They give it their best shot. But that is hardly enough to drag a well-intentioned film about a small-town couple whose live-in dalliance triggers a series of false moves - aborted marriage attempts, to be precise - that puts the girl's politician-father on a collision course with the boy's extended family.
Aaryan plays a happy-go-lucky Guddu Shukla, the star of a Mathura cable news channel. The character is described by somebody as a "one-take kalakaar " - an allusion probably to the actor's career-defining Pyaar Ka Punchnama monologue.
Guddu's cameraman and best pal is Abbas Sheikh, played with flair by Aparshakti Khurana. The latter's sporadic appearances all through the film generate a degree of mirth, as does Pankaj Tripathi's game efforts to rise above the grossly underwritten role of Guddu's nosey brother-in-law Babulal. Tripathi provides the film's brighter moments, but you cannot help feeling that this outing does no justice to his incredible comic timing.
Luka Chuppi Movie Review: Poster of the film (Courtesy Instagram)
To return to the plot, Guddu's life takes a dramatic turn when Rashmi Trivedi (Sanon), an intern who has just returned to Mathura with a degree in electronic media journalism, refuses to accept his proposal for marriage and instead suggests that they live in for a while before making the final call.
This decision by the pair is presented in the light of what has transpired in the opening moments of Luka Chuppi . A popular movie star Nazeem Khan has stirred a massive controversy over his live-in relationship. Self-appointed guardians of morality from an organization called Sanskriti Raksha Manch, led by Rashni's father Vishnu Prasad Trivedi (Vinay Pathak), have gone on the rampage, attacking young couples and blackening their faces. But Rashmi isn't cowed down.
The romance between Guddu and Rashmi is presented in a slapdash manner. They begin asking each other personal questions as the star reporter and the tyro scour the town to record the opinion of the hoi-polloi on the matter of live-in relationships. One old widow inadvertently plants an idea in Rashmi's mind. It would have been great, the woman says, if I had the luxury of living with my husband-to-be before marriage. I would then have found out that he was a drunkard and bailed out, she adds.
Rashmi takes the widow's sage advice more seriously than is good for her, forcing Guddu's hands to such an extent that he agrees to give the idea a chance. So, on the pretext of a long outstation reporting assignment, he and Rashmi drive down to Gwalior, Abbas in tow. Before they set out, the conventional Hindi movie bidaai song is given a gender-reversed spin, with Guddu bidding his family members an emotional goodbye one by one.
The love nest is soon discovered by Babulal and the entire Shukla clan turns up in the house to check out what's up. Rashmi and Guddu pretend that they are married. Guddu's mom (Alka Amin) turns hysterical, his unmarried elder brother is crestfallen, and his father (Atul Srivastava) is confused out his wits.
Convinced that his daughter is a now a married woman, Rashmi's father is left with no option but to accept Guddu as his son-in-law. For the couple, however, a real wedding is still due and the rest of the film is about how they go about finding a way of get the stamp of religious sanction on their liaison. The resultant misadventures are predictable - every time they try to marry, Guddu finds himself at the receiving end of disapproval from his own family.
Luka Chuppi , to be fair, wears a progressive veneer. It is the heroine who always seems to make the first move although once the couple's live-in hideout is exposed and the two lovers return home the girl seems to lose a bit of agency as she succumbs to the pressure to conform to societal rules, defying the very purpose of her subversive act. That apart, the presence of a selfless Muslim best friend who is always ready to help might have added genuine value to the script had he not been only a sidekick whose identity is no more than just a plot detail to be employed at convenient junctures.
The film does well to call out the moral police, the flag-bearers of sanskriti. Yeh dharm nahi hai, mudda hai chunaav ke liye (This isn't about religion, it is an electoral issue, the hero says when he is pushed to the wall. That may be a daring statement to make in the present climate, but the impact of the assertion might have been far greater had the depredations of the religious vigilantes not been jettisoned to the background once the comic love story takes centrestage.
Luka Chuppi isn't without its moments, but its downside overwhelms its strengths by a big margin. It offers shallow entertainment at best. Watch the film only if that is good enough for you.

‘Luka Chuppi’ is the Right Kind of Mindless Comedy
Kartika aaryan and kirti sanon’s luka chuppi is a pleasant watch. the ensemble also keeps you entertained. , luka chuppi.
The phrase ‘mindless comedy’ is bandied around a lot these days. It’s a convenient term to defend a lot of films where the collective IQ of its characters is at times as low as the room temperature. Leave your brains at home! Don’t go looking for sense everywhere! Why can’t you just have a good time? These are some remarks that greet those of us who rarely manage even a chuckle or two while watching such films. So to describe Luka Chuppi , ‘mindless comedy’ is the phrase I’m going to borrow but in the nicest way possible. It isn’t high on any sense. The story telling is simplistic and formulaic. But the proceedings are easy on the eyes and the general mirth is infectious.
Guddu Shukla aka Kartik Aaryan is a local news TV reporter. It’s a channel that seems to have one boss and one reporter and a single camera person — Guddu’s best friend Abbas (Apaarshakti Khurrana). Their preoccupation in such politically charged times is very cute – what do people think of live-in relationships. The assignment gets them close to Rashmi Trivedi (Kriti Sanon), the daughter of a certain Sanskriti Raksha Mantra Chief (Vinay Pathak).
Alok Nath to Play Judge in a Movie Around Sexual Harassment
As we already know from the trailer, love blossoms between Guddu and Rashmi and then the question is about whether to move in together and test waters or take the plunge right away.
Luka Chuppi plays it extremely safe. There isn’t anything radical or revolutionary about exploring the non-shaadi side of things. It’s mindless in the way it doesn’t take itself seriously and almost dodges the issue it wanted to address in the first place. Except a few times, when it pokes fun at hardline Hindu groups that banish lovers in the name of sabhyata and sanskriti .
Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan to Pair up in ‘Love Aaj Kal 2’
Luka Chuppi wants a big fat wedding with some Bollywood-style naach gaana thrown in! But in the music department, certified hits have been repackaged and remixed. And yet, one feels like overlooking all these shortcomings simply because the lead pair exude charm and the ensemble cast includes some terrific actors.
Pankaj Tripathi as the troublemaker and Apaarshakti Khurana as the firefighter are super. The latter’s deadpan expressions brighten up the screen each time. If only the two had longer screen time Lukka Chuppi would have been so much fun.
Kartik Aaryan has been denied his signature breathless monologues but his earnest good boy expressions as he tries to handle his parivar and proxy patni , is quite entertaining. The chemistry between him and Kriti Sanon is quite genuine. She for her part is vivacious and high spirited throughout.
Could the makers have pushed the envelope a little to show us what living in together actually entails? Of course! But as things stand can we still enjoy Luka Chuppi? Most definitely!
I would like to give Luka Chuppi 3 Quints out of 5!

The film releases alongside Sushant Singh Rajput and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Sonchiriya.

"This could have been a fun, sharp film, done right. Instead, we get never-ending scenes of family members yakking, neighbours gossiping, and a few passages between Guddu and Rashmi which are meant to be sensuous and flirtatious (rolling in bed in shorts and Ts, haww, talking of ‘protection’, how forward, double haww). Aaryan and Sanon, in their first pairing, come off standard-issue Bollywood," The Indian Express' film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review of the movie.

Luka Chuppi review: Pankaj Tripathi is the unlikely victim of this Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon comedy
Luka chuppi movie review: the kartik aaryan, kriti sanon film takes an important topic and squanders it away. the film has its moments but you have to wait for them. rating: 2.5/5..
There is something about Pankaj Tripathi. His presence in a film/web series/advertisement/music video/on a juice stall poster makes you believe that whatever he is a part of will be wholesome and fulsome. You want to order that glass of mix juice because you believe it will be a more honest glass of mix juice. You hope that the political parties don’t find out about this superpower of Pankaj Tripathi’s because who knows how they will use it.
And it is when Luka Chuppi takes Pankaj Tripathi, dresses him up in red trousers, a yellow shirt and green sunglasses; saddles him with a clichéd role and worse dialogues, that you want to give up. Tripathi still manages to carry it off – with great power comes great responsibility, and our actor knows it – but just about.
In the above two paragraphs lies the inherent problem with Luka Chuppi – it takes good material and excellent performers and turns them into caricatures. Sure, it has its moments and the second half is largely enjoyable, but you have to wait for the fun. After a slew of excellent small-town dramas, my expectations are high and my patience thin.
At the heart of the story is the moral policing in India and the refusal of our self-appointed moral guardians to allow any kind of sexual agency to the youth over their own lives. Film actor Nazeem Khan (Abhinav Shukla) becomes the enemy number one of the Sanskriti Raksha Manch – the name is self explanatory – after he accepts that he is in a live-in relationship. They can’t beat up Khan for destroying our sanskriti, so they do the next best thing – attack defenceless lovers in the by-lanes of Mathura.
Heading this organization is Vinay Pathak’s Vishnu Trivedi, whose religious grandstanding is in the hope of winning the upcoming election. Rashmi (Kriti Sanon) is his daughter, who has returned home to Mathura after finishing her journalism course in Delhi. Kartik Aaryan’s Guddu, with his spiked hair and the reputation of being a one-star kalaakar, is the star of the local news channel.
The two soon become a team, joined by Aparshakti Khurana’s Abbas – the channel’s cameraman. The trio scours Mathura -- doing a vox pop of sorts to understand what people largely feel about the divisive topic of live-in relationships; the best comments come from where we least expect it – a man clad in saffron. Love soon blossoms between Kriti and Kartik, but instead of taking the saat pheras, Rashmi wants to test their compatibility via a live-in.
It is left to Abbas to find a way for the young lovers to find a sanctuary outside the confines of a small-town. They head to Gwalior – pronounced ‘Gawalior’, as is the wont in the region -- on the pretext of conducting a journalism project and take an apartment, without telling their families.
The thorn in Guddu’s flesh is his meddlesome relative Babulal (Pankaj Tripathi) who finds his love nest and brings the entire family – parents, brothers, sister-in-law and nephew -- there. A quickly made-up tale of the two being married spirals out of control as Rashmi’s father gets involved. The two find themselves living in Guddu’s family home as a married couple without ever having exchanged vows.
After a staid first half, the second half lifts off as the ensemble cast gets a bigger role to play and the narrative moves away from the love story to various aborted attempts on the part of Kriti and Kartik to get married. If the first half only attempts to give that lived-in feeling that such small-town social dramas thrive on, after the interval there are a few of those shining moments, with the trio of Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi and Vinay Pathak responsible for most.
Kartik is good as the small-time boy who is at the receiving end of a mess he didn’t make. With no misogynistic dialogues (cue Pyar Ka Punchnaama 1, 2 and 3, aka Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety) it is a win-win for all. Kriti gets a backstory to explain her urbane mannerisms; and as an empowered Rashmi who refuses to accept the role society forces in her, she is believable.
The film has a positive message but it takes its own sweet time coming. However, I will take what we are getting in today’s political climate. Aparshakti’s Abbas, who has had enough of everyday religious bias, tells a man, “Alien nahi hu, Muslim hu.” The hypocrisy of vigilante justice in the name of saving our sanskriti is called out, “Yeh dharm nahi hai, mudda hai chunaav ke liye.” An extra half star, just for that.

‘Luka Chuppi’ movie review: Kartik Aaryan holds his own in sluggish comedy about a live-in couple
Laxman utekar’s film stars kartik aaryan and kriti sanon as lovers forced to fake a marriage..
Hindi cinema’s misanthropic counterpoint to Ayushmann Khurrana’s genial everyman finally steps out of the Pyaar Ka Punchnama universe created by Luv Ranjan. Kartik Aaryan headlined four of Ranjan’s films and played variations of the same character in three of them: a smug North Indian male specimen who distrusts women and soppy sentiments and finds many reasons to justify his misgivings.
In Laxman Utekar’s Luka Chuppi , Aaryan’s character Guddu is stripped of the misogyny that has dogged him. Aaryan finally gets to plays a decent bloke who is forced into a situation not of his making.
Guddu is the local television star of a cable network in Mathura (he is described as a “one-take artist”). Guddu falls in love with Rashmi (Kriti Sanon), the daughter of ambitious local politician Vishnu (Vinay Pathak) who has found his latest agenda to win votes. After movie star Nazim Khan (Abhinav Shukla) declares his support for live-in relationships, Vishnu becomes Mathura’s self-appointed moral guardian. Vishnu wages war on couples who do not respect the sanctity of marriage. When Rashmi suggests to Guddu that they move in together for a few days to figure out if they are suitable for marriage, it is clear that Vishnu has lost the election, at least in his own home.
Guddu and Rashmi share a house in Gwalior, and manage to convince a nosy neighbour that they are already married. The ruse backfires on them when Guddu’s nosy relative Babulal (Pankaj Tripathi) shows up in Gwalior and then brings Guddu’s extended clan along. After several minutes of breast-beating, Guddu and Rashmi are transported back to Mathura as husband and wife. Vishnu reluctantly gives his blessings, but the couple’s real struggle begins as they try to convert their sham marriage into a real one.
Rohan Shankar’s screenplay is barely funny up to the interval point of the 129-minute movie. The second half works better as Guddu confronts the idiocy of his situation and various family members scamper about trying to keep an eye on him and Rashmi. Most of the performances are very loud and broad, in keeping with the farcical nature of the plot, and only Vinay Pathak acquits himself honourably. Even the usually dependable Pankaj Tripathi is reduced to a colourfully dressed clown, forever kitted out in garish clothing and saddled with poorly scripted situations.
Avinash Kohli, playing Guddu’s unmarried elder brother Vikas, who is angry over his continued single status, contributes to some of the moments of well-timed humour. Kriti Sanon doesn’t have the range yet to play her part, and she makes for an unconvincing small-town belle.
It is left to Kartik Aaryan to portray, not for the first time, a man trying to solve a problem that he had no role in creating. Aaryan holds his own among the ensemble cast and has the right set of grimaces and grins when matters frequently get out of hand. Rohan Shankar’s screenplay stretches a thin premise until it snaps, but he at least gets the messaging right. Vishnu is exposed for the vote-hungry and opportunistic politician that he actually is. The communal-minded jibes hurled at Guddu’s friend, Abbas (Aparshakti Khurana), do not go unpunished. The youth need employment and housing, rather than moral policing, the movie declares.
Luka Chuppi isn’t quite radical, let alone consistently funny, but the long walk to the altar is far less conservative than it could have been. Kartik Aaryan passes through the whole movie without once running down women, and that, in itself, is the movie’s biggest achievement.

Luka Chuppi Movie
LUKA CHUPPI is the story of a couple living-in with their family. Superstar Nazim Khan (Abhinav Shukla) gets into a controversy when it comes to light that he is living-in with his girlfriend and is unapologetic about it. The moral police come out in full force to protest against ...  his 'indecent' act. One such organisation is Rashtriya Sanskriti Manch and in Mathura, it is led by Vishnu Trivedi (Vinay Pathak). His daughter is Rashmi (Kriti Sanon) and she joins a local news channel after completing her media studies in Delhi. Here she bumps into Guddu (Kartik Aaryan) and both fall in love. After a fight with his elder unmarried brother Vikas (Himanshu Kohli) and brother in law Babulal (Pankaj Tripathi), he decides to tie the knot ASAP. He proposes to Rashmi. She however refuses to marry him so soon and insists on a live-in relationship. Guddu obviously freaks out. However inspired by an idea given by their colleague Abbas (Aparshakti Khurana), they decide to live in when they go on a 20-day assignment at Gwalior, where no one knows them. Hence they could live in without any fear. But in order to get the flat on rent, they pretend to be a married couple. Rashmi also has to go out wearing mangalsutra and apply sindoor . All is going well when Babulal catches them getting cosy in a public place. Assuming they are married, he tells his family about it and they all land up at their pad in Gwalior. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Luka Chuppi movie review: Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon's film is an overwritten dummies guide to live-in relationships
In Luka Chuppi, Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon dive into shallow waters, paddling furiously within the whirlpool of a feeble story.
In the 2013 romantic comedy Shuddh Desi Romance, a young couple pretended to be siblings in order to disguise their cohabiting status. In Laxman Utekar ’s version 2019, live-in relationships are not just frowned upon, but discovery of such an arrangement can be humiliating and lead to violence.
In Mathura, the guardians of morality are members of local political party Sanskriti Raksha Manch. The public enemy number one in the region is movie star Nazeem Khan (Abhinav Shukla) whose pro live-in stance is common knowledge. Posters of his blacked out face line the narrow streets.
In this environment, where young couples are being harassed, local television reporter Guddu Shukla (Kartik Aaryan) meets intern Rashmi ( Kriti Sanon ), who has recently returned completed a media course in Delhi.
Guddu, the youngest of three sons, is at loggerheads with his two older brothers and Babulal (Pankaj Tripathi), a lecherous member of the extended family.
Rashmi’s father, Trivedi (Vinay Pathak), has political ambitions as the leader of the Sanskriti Raksha Manch. But despite her father’s hardline, Rashmi tells Guddu that she would like to get to know him better by entering into a live-in arrangement before they decide to marry. Lucky for them, Guddu’s buddy and cameraman Abbas (Aparshakti Khurana) is an ideas-a-minute kind of guy. He manipulates a work assignment in a way that Guddu and Rashmi can now masquerade as a married couple and rent an apartment in Gwalior.
This results in some comical situations with nosy, judgmental neighbours, loved-up scenes of playing house-house and finally, drama. An already shaky script completely unravels after the couple’s ruse is revealed. When their pretense convinces the families and gets a stamp of approval, Guddu and Rashmi suddenly go from being defiant and deliriously happy to guilt-ridden and glum.
Now, with Abbas’s help, but with much interference from Babulal and quite a bit of idiocy of their own, Guddu and Rashmi try to actually get married on the sly.
Rohan Shankar’s script abounds with characters doing dumb things. Had there been a few more layers to the story and character development, one might even have rooted for Guddu and Rashmi. But the only interesting things about them are Aaryan’s hairstyles and pout, and Sanon’s lovely outfits. As actors, they dive into shallow waters, paddling furiously within the whirlpool of a feeble story. The nicest scenes are between the three friends, with Khurana handling the complexities of Abbas’s character with gentleness. It is a contrast to Tripathi who scampers around in colourful costumes like a court jester.
Utekar directs what can best be defined as an overwritten dummies guide to live-in relationships. There is so much drag in this 126-minute film that even the occasional build-up of momentum is punctured by the next chapter of humourless nonsense, such as a bizarre dream sequence with a child getting married and a scene at a temple.
The last word is reserved for Guddu and Rashmi, who unwrap Trivedi’s political opportunism and declare that the youth of India is a vote bank not to be gagged by an outdated moral code. Now if only they had taken this stand 60 minutes sooner.

Luka Chuppi Movie Review: It’s All About Finding The Missing Story, Sense & Substance!
You can watch luka chuppi with zero expectations and yet there's a great chance you'll get disappointed.
Star Cast: Kartik Aaryan and his annoying made-up dialect, Kriti Sanon’s cuteness (at places), a supremely wasted Pankaj Tripathi, (Why)nay? Pathak, Alka I-Mean Why?, Aparshakti (Yahan) Kyun-aana?
Director: (Sab nahi bana paate movies) – Laxman – Utekar
What’s Good: The basic plot behind making the movie is pretty interesting but you can’t stretch a chewing gum after a point, just the mere presence of Pankaj Tripathi!
What’s Bad: When someone is assigned a job and he/she couldn’t finish it! Luka Chuppi’s job was to entertain me through comedy or the emotional connect, it failed in every sector and I have an issue with those comedies can’t make me laugh (I am someone who laughs even at the silliest jokes possible)
Loo Break: You will require some real guts to go back in, once you’re out in the happy & beautiful world!
Watch or Not?: In a theater? NO! It’s a movie serving nothing, you can watch it with zero expectations and yet there’s a great chance you’ll get disappointed!
Mathura’s Vinod “Guddu” Shukla is a reporter of a news channel, and its name is as predictable as the basic plot of this film – Mathura Live. He comes from a very ordinary family, having an elder brother unmarried, a crazy uncle and a blackmailing nephew. Guddu meets Rashmi “She doesn’t have a pet name” Trivedi (Kriti Sanon), who wants to be a journalist and gets the job in the same news channel. Rashmi’s father (Vinay Pathak) is a politician who is against the live-in culture and blatantly oppose it publicly.
Guddu and Rashmi, coming from two very different families, fall in love with each other. Guddu, in a heated argument, challenges his elder brother that he will marry first and proposes Rashmi (WOW). Rashmi decides to live-in with Guddu in order to know him better. There start the difficulties and how they keep lying about their relationship status till the end, is what the rest of the story is all about.
Luka Chuppi Movie Review: Script Analysis
Rohan Shankar has penned this script which is ridiculously annoying. I’m not against cheesy rom-coms at all but this movie never settles in one genre. It’s chaotic nonsense leaving you with nothing in the end. Condom jokes, fart jokes, ‘come here I want to hit your face’ jokes, an annoying neighbour aunty and what not? This movie has a lot not going in its favour. After a point of time, I was questioning myself “can it be any more stupid?” (Yes, was the answer I got from the makers).
The dialogue writer goes through the old syllabus to dig out some very outdated jokes which are anything but funny. Yes, Pankaj Tripathi shines just because of his aura and not because of the shoddily written character. Kartik’s brother’s track works in the second half but that’s about it. Some jokes are genuinely funny but in the hoard of unfunny sequences, even a Pankaj Tripathi hams.
Luka Chuppi Movie Review: Star Performance
Kartik Aaryan needs something really bad to redefine himself. He’s just one bad performance away from slipping into oblivion. Not because of his very few misses in the past but because the competition is so high, you just cannot be indistinguishable. He has the style and looks but needs a very strong director to bring out the actor from him. He follows the similar template of acting (the irksome accent being the exception) that he’s been doing since a long time now.
Kriti Sanon, after gifting us such a high in Bareilly Ki Barfi , just let us down with this one. There are no two thoughts about how she looks but her character is so annoyingly sketched, it starts bothering you after a period of time. Every character of the film gets equally worse treatment; none of them for a change, are good. When you’ve actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak, Alka Amin in your supporting cast, and you decide to squander their talent – may the film be in good hands. Pankaj’s weird clothing style was designed to evoke some laughs, but it didn’t and was ridiculous at the same time.
Luka Chuppi Movie Review: Direction, Music
Laxman Utekar marks his debut with this one and gets gifted by a very lousy script. With a very ordinary attempt at weaving up the story together; Laxman makes sure to cover the basics but few frames remain unintentionally funny. In a sequence where Pankaj catches Kartik red-handedly, we can see a couple just near to the wall, away from each other doing nothing – why? Many such instances pull down the film from being a decent one time watch.
Apart from 5 recreated songs, there are 4 more old songs used with the new music by Tanishk Bagchi. Mannat Noor’s Tu Laung Main Elaachi is ruined using a ton of auto-tune. Ketan Sodha’s background score is welcoming for most of the times, but it irks you too (for example the “hello, hi” BGM whenever the annoying neighbour aunty arrives).
Luka Chuppi Movie Review: The Last Word
All said and done, Luka Chuppi packs in few laughs but there is no major reason why I should recommend this to anyone. If you’re game for, “You’re so cute!”, “Haan, bachpan mein bohot makhhan khaya tha na” kind of dialogues, you can give it a try at your own risk.

Guddu Shukla (Kartik Aaryan) works as a news reporter cum anchor for a cable news channel in Mathura along with his friend Abbas (Aparshakti Khurana), who is his the cameraman. Rashmi Trivedi (Kriti Sanon) is the daughter of a political head honcho (Vinay Pathak), whose party indulges in moral policing and is staunchly against girls and boys indulging in love before marriage. The concept of live-in relationship in anathema for him. Rashmi, who has done Mass Comm from Delhi is a forward thinking individual. She joins Guddu's channel as an intern and love soon blossoms between them. He wants to marry her but she wants to test the waters first and suggests a live-in relationship. An month-long assignment to Gwalior makes that possible. She puts some sindoor, wears a fake mangalsutra and both pretend to be newlyweds. However, the ever suspicious neighbours, as well as Babulal (Pankaj Tripathy) the brother-in-law of his elder brother, threaten to upset the apple cart. They keep on lying to all and sundry, which ends in them being accepted as a married couple by both sets of families. However, conscience finally bites them and they want to get married for real. Their plans to do so are foiled again and again due to circumstances, leading to one hilarious situation after the other. Director Laxman Utekar and writer Rohan Shankar have kept things simple for this one-line plot. They include as many situational gags as possible but do throw in some social messages as well. The makers have inverted the formula in the sense that Kartik and Kriti don't feel any pangs living together on their own but feel guilty when the family gets involved. There is no major conflict between the lovers as they agree on almost everything. Kartik's family is seen progressive enough to encourage their bahu to continue working and not sit at home. However, since it's a comedy, this is in contrast with their behaviour towards their elder daughter-in-law, who is expected to be a homemaker. There is a underlying hint about the marginalisation of Muslims as well. In fact, one of the most powerful lines in the film is uttered by Aparshakti, who says he's just a Muslim and not some alien belonging to another planet. Kriti's father is shown to be a shrewd politician who is shown to change tracks when he learns that being progressive might win him more votes. He does have a genuine change of heart later, where he asks his ghunghat clad wife to not cover her face -- perhaps for the first time in her married life. It's little insights like these which use humour to offer social commentary, that elevate the film. But by and large it's a non-preachy commercial vehicle designed to entertain. More than anything else, it's the witty dialogue which garners the maximum laughs. The use of old songs to highlight the situation is a clever device as well. One would have loved to see more of Pankaj Tripathy, as he's a hoot as a man obsessed with sex. He majorly ad-libs his way through one corny situation after another without ever crossing the lines of decency. The rest of the supporting cast, be it Atul Srivastava as Guddu's mild mannered father or Vinay Pathak as the dabang politician are on point as well. Kriti Sanon is spontaneous throughout and seems to be finding her feet in comedy, having a gala time of it all in the process. Kartik Aaryan displays wholesome charm and plays his part perfectly. Aparshakti instils the fun with minute shrugs and gestures and keeps it subtle but effective nonetheless.. Laxman Utekar, who has made Marathi films like Tapaal (2014) and Lalbaugchi Rani (2016) before, makes a confident debut in Hindi cinema. The film has been shot well in Mathura and Gwalior, which is incidentally Kartik's hometown. Watch Luka Chuppi for a dose of some good, clean fun -- much needed after all the heavy-duty stuff which has been going around in real life.

But all of these problems are second to the fact that the film is simply not funny for the most part. Its allegedly a comedy but it delivers at best a handful of decent laughs, all in the second half. I was bored, often confused, and genuinely missing the low-IQ, puerile humor of last weeks Total Dhamaal.Yes, Luka Chuppi is that lousy. Im going with one-and-a-half out of five.

A situational comedy with a message… Relatable premise, clean humour, foot tapping music, loads of entertainment… Superb climax… Kartik Aaryan top notch, Kriti Sanon damn good. Recommended!
Ratings:. 2/5 Review By: Anupama Chopra Site: Filmcompanion
Luka Chuppi is a tiresome tale of a couple from Mathura, Guddu and Rashmi, who decide to experiment with a live-in relationship. They do this by pretending to be married. And all that can go wrong does. The writing by Rohan Shankar is consistently feeble. Scenes are stretched endlessly and the humour is limp. The comic flourishes are underlined by annoyingly loud background music, which cues us to laugh but so little of Luka Chuppi is actually funny.Lukka Chuppi features five remixes which is a sign of the larger issue with the film there just isnt enough freshness or flair here. Im going with two stars.
Ratings:. — Review By: Komal Nahta Site: Zee ETC Bollywood Business
On the whole, Luka Chuppi has an excellent second half to keep the audience thoroughly entertained, and the producers, distributors and exhibitors extremely happy. In commercial terms, the very moderately-priced Luka Chuppi will definitely prove to be a box-office hit.
Ratings:. 2/5 Review By: Saibal Site: NDTV
Luka Chuppi isn’t without its moments, but its downside overwhelms its strengths by a big margin. It offers shallow entertainment at best. Watch the film only if that is good enough for you.
Ratings:. 3/5 Review By: Smruddhi Site: India Today
Laxman Utekar’s Luka Chuppi explores the concept of live-in relationships in small-town Mathura and Gwalior, where they are heavily frowned upon. However, despite having top-notch performances and hilarious moments, the film leaves much to be desired as it only manages to scratch the surface.
Ratings:. 3.5/5 Review By: Ronak Site: Times Of India
But what really makes ‘Luka Chuppi’ an entertaining watch is the nuanced writing by Rohan Ghoge and its execution. The first half is swift and packed with funny moments that end in an unpredictable twist. The second half too, is marked by quite a few laugh-out-loud moments.Overall, ‘Luka Chuppi’ is a fun ride that never gets too preachy or uncomfortable for the family audience. Its a clean entertainer with a message thats not too loud, but clear, for sure.
Ratings:. 3.5/5 Review By: Hungama Site: Bollywood Hungama
Rohan Shankar’s story is novel and entertaining and different from other such films in this genre. The characters are very well fleshed out and most importantly, they are relatable. Rohan Shankar’s screenplay is effective for most parts and evokes the right humour. At some places however, it is a bit weak, especially in the first half.On the whole, LUKA CHUPPI is a funny take on the modern relationships laced with dollops of situational and funny moments. This clean comedy would get thumbs up not just from the youngsters but also from the family audiences. Recommended!
Ratings: 3/5 Review By: Mahwash Site: Masala
Luka Chuppi tells the story of an average young man named Guddu Shukla (Kartik Aaryan) and Rashmi Trivedi (Kriti Sanon) that will definitely make you wanting more of this genre. Its a well-made romantic comedy that makes subtle social commentary without sermonizing (cough Sui Dhaaga cough). Guddi and Rashmis romance is lovable and hilarious without turning slapstick or overdone.Luka Chuppi is an enjoyable watch that is directed at a young audience who will find it very relatable. It also subtly touches upon various relevant and timely social issues. Go for it and have a good time at the movies!
Ratings: 2.5/5 Review By: Manjusha Site: Gulf News
Be warned, Luka Chuppi isnt a life-altering romantic comedy which sets out to make some grave social comment. Its a light-hearted film €” with a scattered, almost fickle, storyline €” bolstered by good performances from a sturdy cast. While you may not put a ring on this one, you can definitely live with it for a couple of hours of your life.
