What Is an AI Essay Writer and How Does It Work?

An essay writer is an AI writing tool that can automatically generate essays, articles, and content based on a topic or subject you provide. It analyzes thousands of examples from the web to learn the patterns of good writing and can then generate original content on demand.

How does it work exactly? AI essay writers use natural language generation technology, like GPT-4, to generate human-like content from scratch. You simply input a topic, or subject, and the AI studies examples of similar content to get an understanding of structure, vocabulary, tone, and more. It then generates a draft for you.

AI essay writers can be an effective tool for quickly generating draft content, ideas, and outlines. The content can then be edited and refined by a human to publish ready quality. For businesses and marketers, an AI essay writer offers an efficient way to produce quality content at scale to feed your content marketing machine.

Benefits of AI Essay Writer for Businesses and Marketers

An essay generator tool can be an incredible resource for businesses and marketers. Here are a few of the major benefits:

Save Time and Increase Productivity

Coming up with blog posts, social media updates, and other content on a consistent basis requires a lot of time and effort. An AI essay writer can help automate some of the initial content creation, allowing you to focus your efforts on editing and optimizing the content. This can help significantly boost your productivity and allow you to scale your content output.

Generate Unique Content

One of the biggest challenges with content creation is coming up with new and original ideas and topics to write about. An AI-powered essay writer has been trained on massive datasets and can suggest unique topics, titles, outlines, and more to spark your creativity. The content it generates will be completely unique and original.

Improve Search Ranking

High-quality, keyword-rich content is essential for achieving high search rankings in Google and other search engines. An AI essay writer can help you  seamlessly integrate keywords into the content it generates for you. It may also suggest synonyms, related phrases, and semantically similar terms to help optimize your content for search.

Using an essay generator can minimize the need to outsource content creation and allow you to scale your operations without a huge investment. For small businesses and startups especially, this cost savings can be hugely impactful.

Appeal to Wide Audiences

An AI essay writer is able to generate content to appeal to audiences with varying levels of expertise. This allows you to reach a wider range of potential customers and clients with your content marketing efforts.

In summary, an essay writer has the potential to revolutionize content creation for businesses. The time savings, productivity benefits, and cost effectiveness make a strong case for implementing AI for content marketing. With an essay writer, you can scale your content output and achieve real results.

How AI Essay Writer Improve My Writing Skills?

Using an AI essay writer can actually help improve your own writing skills. Here's how:

  • It teaches you new vocabulary and language structures. As you review the essays the AI generates, you'll pick up fresh words, turns of phrase, and ways to express ideas that you can add to your own personal style.
  • You learn from its example structure. Most AI essay writers are trained on millions of high-quality human-written essays. Reading the logical flow of introductions, body paragraphs, transitions, and conclusions in its output helps you better grasp effective essay structure.
  • It shows you common mistakes to avoid. While AI writers continue to improve, they still make some grammar, punctuation, and stylistic errors. Spotting those helps develop your proofreading skills.
  • It provides inspiration when you're stuck. If you don't know how to start an essay or need a creative hook, reviewing a few opening lines and thesis statements from an AI can spark ideas to get you going.
  • It gives you a starting point to build on. Use an AI's draft paragraphs on a topic as a jumping off point. Keep the good parts, revise the weak parts, and add your own voice and style. It's faster than writing from scratch.
  • It helps practice editing and revising. Take the AI's full essay draft and work on tweaking it to improve flow, word choice, structure and coherence. Developing editing skills makes you a stronger writer.

So don't just treat that AI essay writer as a quick fix. Analyzing its output and using it strategically will make you a sharper, more skilled writer in the long run. Those benefits are well worth the investment for your education or career.

ai to write an essay

Our AI research tool in the essay editor interface makes it easy to find a source or fact check any piece of text on the web. It will find you the most relevant or related piece of information and the source it came from. You can quickly add that reference to your document references with just a click of a button. We also provide other modes for research such as “find support statistics”, “find supporting arguments”, “find useful information”, and other research methods to make finding the information you need a breeze. Make essay writing and research easy with our AI research assistant.

Easily Cite References

ai to write an essay

Our essay generator makes citing references in MLA and APA styles for web sources and references an easy task. The essay writer works by first identifying the primary elements in each source, such as the author, title, publication date, and URL, and then organizing them in the correct format required by the chosen citation style. This ensures that the references are accurate, complete, and consistent. The product provides helpful tools to generate citations and bibliographies in the appropriate style, making it easier for you to document your sources and avoid plagiarism. Whether you’re a student or a professional writer, our essay generator saves you time and effort in the citation process, allowing you to focus on the content of your work.

Produce Better Essays than ChatGPT

Our essay generator is designed to produce the best possible essays, with several tools available to assist in improving the essay, such as editing outlines, title improvements, tips and tricks, length control, and AI-assisted research. Unlike ChatGPT, our AI writer can find sources and assist in researching for the essay, which ensures that the essay is backed by credible and relevant information. Our essay generator offers editing assistance and outlines to improve the structure and flow of the essay. This feature is especially useful for students who may struggle with essay organization and require guidance on how to present their ideas coherently. Another advantage of our AI essay writer over ChatGPT is that it is designed explicitly for essay writing, ensuring that the output is of high quality and meets the expectations of the instructor or professor. While ChatGPT may be able to generate essays, there is no guarantee that the content will be relevant, accurate or meet the requirements of the assignment.

Easily Avoid Plagiarism

Our AI generated essays are 100% unique and plagiarism free. Worried about AI detection? Worry no more, use our AI Detection Remover to remove any AI Plagiarism produced from the essay generator.

Using AI tools

AI Writing Tools | Definition, Uses & Implications

AI writing tools are artificial intelligence (AI) software applications like ChatGPT that help to automate or assist the writing process. These tools use machine learning algorithms to generate human-sounding text in response to users’ text-based prompts.

Other AI tools, such as grammar checkers , paraphrasers and summarizers serve more specific functions, like identifying grammar and spelling mistakes or rephrasing text.

AI writing tools (chatbots, grammar checkers, etc.) use natural language processing (NLP) algorithms, machine learning , and large language models (LLMs) to generate or improve written text. These tools are trained to identify patterns in vast amounts of data. The tools then use these patterns to analyze human inputs (or prompts) and generate natural-sounding outputs (similar to how predictive text works).

Different AI tools may be programmed in different ways. For example, ChatGPT, the popular chatbot developed by OpenAI and released in November 2022, uses generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs) and was trained using reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) , meaning that the tool was given feedback from humans to help guide it towards the most helpful responses.

AI writing tools have a number of helpful applications. Some of these applications are discussed below.

Interactive learning and feedback

Generative AI tools can be helpful resources for conversational learning. By inputting questions, users can engage in interactive learning at any time.

You can also prompt these tools to provide feedback on your work to improve the clarity or consistency of your writing. However, it’s important not to upload sensitive information, as user inputs are generally saved by the tool for the purposes of training future models.

Below is an example of how ChatGPT can be used for interactive learning.

Example: Using ChatGPT for interactive learning

  • Tell me three facts about Carthaginian culture
  • Carthaginians were known for their maritime trade and commerce, and their navy was one of the strongest in the ancient Mediterranean world. They established colonies and trading posts throughout the Mediterranean, including in Sicily, Sardinia, and North Africa.
  • Carthaginians had a polytheistic religion, and their chief deity was Baal Hammon, the god of fertility, agriculture, and the sky. They also worshiped a number of other gods and goddesses, including Tanit, the goddess of love, fertility, and war.
  • Carthaginians were skilled metalworkers and produced a variety of metal goods, including weapons, armor, jewelry, and household objects. They were particularly famous for their bronze work, which was highly prized in the ancient world. Carthaginian bronze was so valued that it was used by the Romans to make their famous statues and other works of art.
  • Tell me three more facts about the Carthaginian navy
  • The Carthaginian navy was one of the most advanced and powerful navies of the ancient world. It was instrumental in establishing Carthage as a dominant power in the Mediterranean region.
  • The Carthaginians were known for their skill in shipbuilding and developed a variety of ship types for different purposes, including warships, transport ships, and cargo ships. One of their most famous ship types was the quinquereme, a large warship with five rows of oars.
  • The Carthaginian navy was led by a commander called the “admiral.” The admiral was responsible for overseeing the fleet and making strategic decisions about naval warfare. One of the most famous Carthaginian admirals was Hannibal Barca, who led the Carthaginian fleet during the First Punic War against Rome.

Generating research questions and outlines

AI writing tools can be used to generate potential research questions or research paper outlines . You can then refine the tool’s responses by further prompting it or directly editing the output yourself to ensure the result makes sense and fits your requirements.

Below is an example of how ChatGPT can be used to generate potential reseach questions and research method ideas.

Example: Using ChatGPT to generate research questions and methods

  • Develop three possible research questions on the following topic: “The influence of technology on second language acquisition.”
  • What is the impact of technology-assisted language learning (TALL) on the acquisition of a second language?
  • How do different types of technology, such as mobile applications, virtual reality, and online platforms, affect second language acquisition outcomes?
  • How do individual learner characteristics, such as age, proficiency level, and motivation, interact with the use of technology in second language acquisition?
  • Suggest three quantitative research methods appropriate to the second question.
  • Experimental research: This research method involves manipulating an independent variable (in this case, the type of technology used) to observe its effect on a dependent variable (second language acquisition outcomes). Participants would be randomly assigned to different groups using different types of technology to learn a second language, and then their language acquisition outcomes would be measured and compared.
  • Survey research: This research method involves using questionnaires to gather data from a large group of participants. In this case, a survey could be designed to gather information on participants’ use of different types of technology to learn a second language, as well as their language acquisition outcomes. This would allow for a large-scale investigation of how different types of technology are being used, and what their impact might be.
  • Correlational research: This research method involves examining the relationship between two or more variables. In this case, a correlational study could be conducted to investigate whether there is a relationship between the type of technology used and language acquisition outcomes. Data could be collected from participants using different types of technology to learn a second language, and then the correlation between the type of technology and language acquisition outcomes could be calculated.

Paraphrasing text

AI tools like ChatGPT and Scribbr’s free paraphrasing tool can help you paraphrase text to express your ideas more clearly, avoid repetition, and maintain a consistent tone throughout your writing.

They can also help you incorporate scholarly sources in your writing in a more concise and fluent way, without the need for direct quotations. However, it’s important to correctly cite all sources to avoid accidental plagiarism.

Summarizing text

AI writing tools can help condense a text to its most important and relevant ideas. This can help you understand complex information more easily. You can also use summarizer tools on your own work to summarize your central argument, clarify your research question, and form conclusions.

You can do this using generative AI tools or more specialized tools like Scribbr’s free text-summarizer .

Scribbr summarizer

Proofreading text

AI writing tools can be used to identify spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes and suggest corrections. These tools can help to improve the clarity of your writing and avoid common mistakes .

While AI tools like ChatGPT offer useful suggestions, they can also potentially miss some mistakes or even introduce new grammatical errors into your writing.

We advise using Scribbr’s proofreading and editing service  or a tool like Scribbr’s free grammar checker , which is designed specifically for this purpose.

Translating text

AI translation tools like Google Translate can be used to translate text from a source language into various target languages. While the quality of these tools tend to vary depending on the languages used, they’re constantly developing and are increasingly accurate.

Google Translate

While there are many benefits to using AI writing tools, some commentators have emphasized the limitations of AI tools and the potential disadvantages of using them. These drawbacks are discussed below.

Impact on learning

One of the potential pitfalls of using AI writing tools is the effect they might have on a student’s learning and skill set. Using AI tools to generate a paper, thesis , or dissertation , for example, may impact a student’s research, critical thinking, and writing skills.

However, other commentators argue that AI tools can be used to promote critical thinking (e.g., by having a student evaluate a tool’s output and refine it).

Consistency and accuracy

Generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT) are not always trustworthy and sometimes produce results that are inaccurate or factually incorrect. Although these tools are programmed to answer questions, they can’t judge the accuracy of the information they provide and may generate incorrect answers or contradict themselves.

It’s important to verify AI-generated information against a credible source .

Grammatical mistakes

While generative AI tools can produce written text, they don’t actually understand what they’re saying and sometimes produce grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes.

You can combine the use of generative AI tools with Scribbr’s grammar checker , which is designed to catch these mistakes.

Ethics and plagiarism

As AI writing tools are trained on large sets of data, they may produce content that is similar to existing content (which they usually cannot cite correctly), which can be considered plagiarism.

Furthermore, passing off AI-generated text as your own work is usually considered a form of plagiarism and is likely to be prohibited by your university. This offense may be recognized by your university’s plagiarism checker or AI detector .

I'm a high school teacher and still encourage my students to write by hand. It helps them to learn new things.

  • As a high school teacher, I still ask my students to write essays by hand.
  • It not only takes them away from screens, but also doing it helps with learning.
  • I'm sure there are ways in which AI can help with learning, but I still like essays the "old way."

Insider Today

I'm a high school English teacher , and I recently had a parent say to me, "ChatGPT can produce a decent essay on just about any topic in 3.4 seconds. You're not still teaching kids essay writing the old way, are you?"

Good question. Like most good questions posed to humans, my response requires more than 3.4 seconds to create and read, but it is one I'd like every parent of a high school student to consider as we head back into another academic year.

AI can be a great resource

Yes, it's true: generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) are incredible resources. An entire essay produced in 3.4 seconds? That's almost faster than I can type "3.4 seconds," and I am not above marveling at the technology that makes this possible.

I can also envision many reasons that kind of efficiency would be appealing to students, as well as their parents, who — in many instances — not only have been successfully using AI in their own work and personal lives but also have witnessed and worried over their children's busy schedules .

If the "new way" creates more time for students' other activities — extracurriculars, jobs, families, friends, even Netflix — and less stress for students , as an educator, I am interested in how I might encourage my students to use AI in various teacher-vetted, revision-based ways that support their academic goals. A good example of this is using Grammarly while writing an essay.

Related stories

But, if by "old way" that parent meant that I'm still asking students to write without ChatGPT, occasionally even with a pencil and piece of paper, my answer is also yes. Here's why.

Their brains are still developing

Adolescence is a pivotal time for brain development. T he prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for skills like planning, prioritizing, and decision making, is not fully developed yet. This might mean lots of friend drama, but it equals academic opportunity in a classroom, because the adolescent brain is primed to take in new information and adapt.

This is exactly why it's important to ask students to engage in challenging activities like arguing an original point with specific, verifiable evidence. It's hard, and they might struggle .

We are still figuring out how AI can help in the classroom

Teachers are still learning how to most effectively guide students through the acceptable use of artificial intelligence and determine its merit in their classrooms. T wo out of every three educators polled by EducationWeek in January 2024, said they hadn't yet used AI-driven tools in their classroom .

Many of the educators cited lack of time and training as reasons they hadn't yet explored how AI could both assist their own work and potentially the work of their students. Even the most seasoned tech integrationist teachers I know mostly navigate AI best practices through instinct since very little in the AI-in-education realm has had the longevity to be tested.

In addition to the issues raised above about brain development, LLMs can "hallucinate," leading to misinformation that can also contain bias that many students might miss. It's critical that students don't simply see these technologies as "cool tools that know everything" and instead — before they use them — are taught by the educators they trust about their limitations.

Writing by hand helps learn new things

Although my students will certainly use computers and other assistive tech as they work on their writing — which can come with spellcheck tools, for example — I was serious about asking them sometimes to use pencil and paper .

Studies suggest that writing by hand prompts distinct and more complex brain connections that are fundamental in encoding new information. In other words, the actual act of writing by hand can deepen retention and comprehension of whatever concepts students are learning in their classes, and stimulate the original ideas that can evade students when they only type into an electronic document.

Also, writing by hand — to state the obvious — gets them off screens, away from the daily barrage of notifications, and hopefully into a headspace that is quieter, slower, and more primed for authentic, inventive thought. And doesn't that sound beneficial for our often over-stimulated, over-scheduled young people?

As teachers get better at helping students learn how to use generative AI appropriately and students get better at using it, there will certainly be reasons for them to do so for the sake of efficiency. However, remember the adage that "childhood goes so fast"? It's true. There will be plenty of time for young people — after they've learned to think for themselves — to adapt to AI's role in their futures. While they're young, let's not rush them.

Watch: AI allows marketers to make data-driven decisions faster, says NICE CMO Einat Weiss

ChatGPT is great at summarizing books. But will AI ever write a true work of literature?

A person lies in bed reading a book, wearing a white blouse, in a painting with soft, muted colors.

  • Contrary to popular belief, generative AI is capable of producing quality prose.
  • While some writers resist the idea that AI can produce art alone, others use it as a tool for creative writing.
  • It’s probable that AI will change literature the same way past innovations changed other arts.

It’s 2024 and fantasy author George R.R. Martin has officially spent 12 years working on The Winds of Winter , the long-awaited sixth installment in the series that inspired the HBO hit Game of Thrones . With no release date in sight, one tech-savvy fan decided to write the story himself, or rather, he asked ChatGPT to write it for him. Prompted to develop outlines for each chapter, and then turn those outlines into prose, the AI churned out a 683,276-word tome of surprising quality.

Surprising because although this “fan-made” version of Winds of Winter failed to live up to the standards of Martin’s work, it did contain the unexpected twists and turns that made his fantasy epic so successful. Among the book’s flabbergasted readers was Martin, who upon learning of its existence not only took legal action against the fan but also ChatGPT’s developer, OpenAI.

Joining the ranks of other bestselling authors such as John Grisham and Jonathan Franzen, Martin’s ongoing war with large language models — which were trained on their writing, among countless other sources — raises an important question about the creative capabilities of machine learning. Anyone who has used AI programs like ChatGPT in recent months knows they are great at summarizing textbooks and writing boilerplate cover letters, but can they also produce the kind of writing that moves us and speaks to our souls?

Training data

Journalist Vauhini Vara thinks the answer is yes. In an article titled “Confessions of a Viral AI Writer,” she relates how in 2020 OpenAI granted her early access to GPT-3. Defining creative writing mainly as “waiting for the right word,” she suspected that generative AI, with its instantaneous access to every noun and adjective in the English dictionary, could be a helpful tool, especially for topics she struggled to write about.

One of these topics — the topic, really — was the death of Vara’s older sister, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer while still in high school. Initially, GPT-3’s attempts at writing a story based on this premise were unsatisfactory. The AI would swap her sister’s real-world fate with a miraculous recovery or, in drafts where her death was acknowledged, turn Vara into a long-distance runner racing for charity. It wasn’t until she shifted to a more collaborative writing process, with GPT-3 learning from and adapting to her own inputs, that it managed to produce a line of text that genuinely touched her:

We were driving home from Clarke Beach, and we were stopped at a red light, and she took my hand and held it. This is the hand she held: the hand I write with, the hand I am writing this with.

Trees by the water at Clarke Beach, a setting of the story by Vauhini Vara.

Although ChatGPT has been programmed to write in a bland, explanatory way, it can learn to mimic other voices provided it has enough training data.

“I think there is a misconception that large language models like ChatGPT are not very good at writing in a lyrical, literary prose style,” author Sean Michaels tells Big Think after being pointed to Vara’s article. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well, just like all the image-generating software can do things like making photos in the styles of Wes Anderson or David Lynch.”

For his novel Do You Remember Being Born , in which a poet is approached by a tech company to co-author a collection of poems with their AI, Michaels created a custom version of ChatGPT he called “Moorebot,” which through training learned to write in the style of real-world poet Marianne Moore, further blurring the distinction between human and machine.

AI: creativity and connection

Although some writers oppose the rise of AI out of concern for their employability, others have embedded the debate in an older, broader dialogue on the meaning and purpose of art. The Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, who writes in a style so idiosyncratic critics coined the phrase “Kaufmanesque” to describe it, has been perhaps most vocal about his personal distaste of machine learning. Looking beyond the standard definition of creativity — creating something new and original — Kaufman describes art as any form of expression that establishes an emotional connection between people.

“Say who you are,” he said in a BAFTA lecture that foreshadowed comments made during the 2023 SAG strikes . “Really say it, in your life and in your work. Tell someone out there — someone who is lost, someone not yet born, someone who won’t be born for 500 years. Your writing will be a record of your time. It can’t help but be. But if you’re honest, you will help that person be less lonely in their world.”

Even if AI were capable of writing something emotional or profound, which Vara and Michaels claim it can, Kaufman would refuse to recognize this as art because it cannot establish a link between reader and author. “If I read a poem,” he recently said in a statement on AI , “and that poem moves me, I am in love with the person who wrote it. I can’t be in love with a computer program. I can’t, because it isn’t anything.”

A group of people holding a sign that says SAG on strike against AI.

Kaufman’s sentiment should be assessed alongside that of Michaels who, through his work with AI, has reached a different conclusion: Human creativity is less special than we want to believe. He explains:

“Imagine I write, ‘The moon looked like a slice of lemon.’ You read it and think, ‘That’s an interesting image.’ But when AI does it, you think, ‘Well, is that interesting? Because it just seems completely random.’ Human beings have this capacity to make meaning from things and find connections where there are none or where there is no intention behind them. I found it provocative not just that AI could come up with lines I found beautiful or strange or interesting, but also that it got me wondering if the AI was doing something successfully as a writer or if I was doing something successfully as a reader.”

As for whether or not AI is capable of ‘true’ creativity:

“It’s true human art draws on memories, bodies, dreams, and arbitrary but somehow meaningful linkages between abstract, surreal thoughts. None of those things are things ChatGPT has. At least not in a literal way. But then again, there is something strange about the way fiction is about pretended bodies, pretended dreams, pretended lived experiences. If you read a modern story about, say, a 17th-century Dutch merchant, that’s not based on anybody’s real-life experience as a 17th-century merchant. Similarly, because these large language models don’t have what we have, that doesn’t mean that their work has none of the qualities that ours does. It’s not that easy.”

The future of writing

According to Michaels, increased usage of large language models is expected to lead “to a certain convergence of styles, with writing becoming less diverse and more monolithic as we use the same algorithms.”

Florent Vinchon, a PhD student at Université Paris Cité studying the creative skills of generative AI, suggests that — although it is still too soon to say with certainty — machine learning “might have the same impact on writing as photography had on painting,” a view shared by other experts in the field. Just as the camera pushed painters from realism to abstraction, spawning artistic movements that concerned themselves with how we perceive rather than what , AI could inspire new generations of authors to experiment with their writing.

A painting of a woman in a pink dress sitting on a bench, created with the assistance of ChatGPT.

Since programs like ChatGPT allow anyone to produce competent prose, the novels and novellas of tomorrow may be deliberately less polished, riddled with grammatical errors and linguistic idiosyncrasies that point to the limits of the human brain and the uniqueness of the individual perspective. Far from a threat to the survival of creative writing or human creativity in general, AI, like the innovative technologies that came before it, may become a force of change and a source of inspiration.

AI Checkers Forcing Kids To Write Like A Robot To Avoid Being Called A Robot

ai to write an essay

(Mis)Uses of Technology

from the delve-devoid-underscore dept

Can the fear of students using generative AI and the rise of questionable AI “checker” tools create a culture devoid of creativity? It’s a topic that is curiously one worth delving into a bit more deeply, in part because of something that happened this weekend.

Earlier this year, we had a post by Alan Kyle about California bill SB 942 . That bill would require AI companies to offer a free AI detection tool, despite the fact that such tools are notoriously unreliable and prone to nonsense. As Kyle wrote, the bill takes a “nerd harder” approach to regulating technology its backers don’t understand.

SB 942 has continued to move forward just passed in the California Assembly. It’s now on Governor Newsom’s desk to potentially sign.

I was thinking about that this weekend after a situation at home. One of my kids* has an English homework assignment. They had to read Kurt Vonnegut’s famous short story, Harrison Bergeron , and write a short essay about it. Since I do a fair bit of writing, my kid asked me to review the essay and see if I had any pointers. I gave a few general suggestions on how to think about improving the flow of the piece, as it read very much like a standard first draft: a bit stilted. My kid went off to work on a rewrite.

If you’re unfamiliar with the story of Harrison Bergeron, it’s about a society that seeks to enforce “equality” by placing “handicaps” on anyone who excels at anything to bring them down to the least common denominator (e.g., ugly masks for pretty people, having to carry around extra weights for strong people). One of the morals to that story is on the perils of seeking to force equality in a manner that limits excellence and creativity.

Later in the day, the kid came by with their school-issued Chromebook, which has Grammarly Pro pre-installed. The students are encouraged to use it to improve their writing. One thing that the tool has is an “AI Checker” in which it tries to determine if the submitted text was written by AI.

This is similar to “plagiarism checkers” that have been around for a few decades. In fact, Grammarly’s “check” covers both AI and plagiarism (or so it says). Those systems have always had problems, especially around false positives. And it seems that the AI checkers are (unsurprisingly) worse**.

It turns out that Grammarly only just introduced this feature a few weeks ago . Thankfully, Grammarly’s announcement states pretty clearly that AI detection is pretty iffy:

AI detectors are an emerging—and inexact—technology. When an AI detector definitively states whether the analyzed content contains AI, it’s not acting responsibly. No AI detector can conclusively determine whether AI was used to produce text. The accuracy of these tools can vary based on the algorithms used and the text analyzed.
Anyway, the kid wanted to show me that when the word “devoid” was used, the AI-checker suggested that the essay was “18% AI written.” It’s a bit unclear even what that 18% means. Is it a “probability this essay was written by AI” or “percentage of the essay we think may have been written by AI”? But, magically, when the word “devoid” was changed to “without” the AI score dropped to 0%.

In Grammarly’s announcement, it claims that because these tools are so flaky, it “does things differently” than other AI checker tools. Namely, it says that its own tool is more transparent:

Grammarly’s AI detection shows users what part of their text, if any, appears to have been AI-generated, and we provide guidance on interpreting the results. This percentage may not answer “why” text has been flagged. However, it allows the writer to appropriately attribute sources, rewrite content, and mitigate the risk of being incorrectly accused of AI plagiarism. This approach is similar to our plagiarism detection capabilities, which help writers identify and revise potential plagiarism, ensuring the originality and authenticity of their work.

I can tell you that this is not true. After the kid continued to work on the essay and reached a point where they thought it was in good shape, the AI checker said it was 17% AI, but gave no indication of what might be AI-generated or why.

Now, to be clear, the essay can still be turned in. There is no indication that the teacher is relying on, or even using, the AI checker. When I mentioned all this on Bluesky, other teachers told me they know to basically ignore any score under 60% as a likely false positive. But my kid is reasonably flustered that if the AI checker is suggesting the essay sounds like AI wrote it, that it might mean there’s a problem with the essay.

At that point, the hunt began to figure out what could possibly be causing the 17% score. The immediate target was more advanced vocabulary (the issue that had already been identified with “devoid.”)

The essay did use the word “delve,” which has now become something of a punchline as showing up in every AI-generated work . There’s even a study showing the massive spike in the use of the word in PubMed publications:

A chart from the study showing a massive increase in the word "delve" after ChatGPT launched in November 2022. Chart is basically flat and then curves straight up.

Even crazier is the use of both “delve” and “underscore.” However, my kid’s essay did not use “underscore.”

A chart from the study showing a massive increase in the word "delve" and "underscore" after ChatGPT launched in November 2022. Chart is completely flat and then curves straight up on the date ChatGPT launches.

The main theory I’ve seen is that the reason “delve” is so popular in AI works is that some of the training and data commonly used in AI systems was done in Nigeria and Kenya, where the word “delve” is more common. This has resulted in some arguments online, such as when online pontificator Paul Graham tweeted out how receiving an email with “delve” in it indicated it was written by ChatGPT, leading a bunch of Nigerians to call him out by mocking him , and highlighting that other cultures use language differently than he might.

Either way, the “delve” in my kid’s essay was not written by AI. But, just to be safe, the word was replaced. As were some other words. It made no difference. The AI checker still said 17%.

At one point, we looked at a slightly oddly worded sentence and tested removing it. The score went up to 20%. At that point, the kid just started removing each sentence, one at a time, to see what changed the score. Nothing actually seemed to do it, and despite Grammarly’s promise of transparency and clarity, no further information was provided.

All of this struck me as quite a series of lessons. First, it points out the absolute stupidity of bills like SB 942 which will only increase, rather than decrease, this kind of AI dousing rod woo woo divination.

But, the bigger lesson has to do with AI and schools. I know that many educators are terrified of generative AI tools these days. Plenty of educators talk about how they know kids today are turning in essays generated by ChatGPT. Sometimes it’s obvious, and sometimes less so. And many are not sure what to do about it.

I’ve seen a few creative ideas (and forgive me for not remembering where I saw these) such as having the students create a prompt to get ChatGPT to write an essay related to a class topic. Then, the real homework is having the student edit and correct the ChatGPT output. The students are then told to hand in the prompt, the original ChatGPT essay, and also their corrections.

A similar idea was to have the students write their own essay and then also have ChatGPT write an essay on the same prompt. Then, the students had to hand in both essays, along with a short explanation of why they thought their own essay was better.

In other words, there are some ways of approaching this, and as time goes on, I expect we’ll hear of more.

But, simply inserting a sketchy “AI checker” in the process seems likely to do more harm than good. Even if the teacher isn’t guaranteed to be using the tool, just the fact that it’s there creates a challenge for my kid who doesn’t want to risk it. And it’s teaching them to diminish their own writing skills in order to convince the AI-checker that the writing was done by a human.

And that seems, ironically, quite like the lesson of what “Harrison Bergeron” was supposed to teach us to avoid. Vonnegut was showing us why trying to stifle creativity is bad. Now my kid feels the need to stifle their own creativity just to avoid being accused of being a machine.

I’m not against AI as a tool. I’ve talked about how I use it here as a tool to help edit my (human) writing, to challenge me, and to push me to be a better (human) writer, even as those tools tend to be awful writers themselves. But I fear that with there being such a fear about “AI writing,” the end result might actually make people write less with the creativity of humans, and more to simply avoid being called out as a machine.

* In case you’re wondering, I checked first to make sure they were okay with me writing about this before telling this story and have kept details to a minimum to protect their privacy.

** After reading through a draft of this piece, kid suggested we should run this through an AI checker as well, and it tells me (falsely) that 3.7% of this article appears to be written by AI (it specifically calls out my description of Harrison Bergeron as well as my description of plagiarism checkers as likely written by AI).

Sounds like what is happening with captchas lately

https://techxplore.com/news/2023-08-bots-captcha-humans.html

It is really getting much harder “To Tell Computers and Humans Apart”.

And now it is becomming the opposite of trying to stop bots and allow humans.

ai to write an essay

@GHB, Captcha checkers aren’t really captcha checkers anymore. They are history and device fingerprinting.

The puzzle is just used as a bootstrap to run obfuscated code that normally wouldn’t run without a click event. It runs hardware/device fingerprinting locally in your browser, including some of your recent history and submitting it in obfuscated form.

There was a write-up Proof of Concept of how this works at a site called varun awhile back.

While the server side generation code is no longer available, sufficient information is extracted to uniquely identify a device, and local network device map, through the 0.0.0.0 loophole, which is then identified anonymously and tied back to a dossier utilizing a building-a-bridge strategy (building out from origin and destination (backwards) until reaching the connection point.

This is fairly common knowledge in some places.

I was under the impression RECaptcha also was assessing how you interacted with the prompt, tracking your mouse cursor and such using the existing data used to support accessibility options, to assess for human behavior. Was that short lived?

Re: Re: Re: Re:

Mouse cursor tracking was used, I think; but at this point, surely recording human cursor tracking, adding random jutter, and replaying it would be almost trivial.

Both "creative ideas" to combat AI essays mentioned here are bad

Both suggestions could still be completed 100% by AI without any understanding of the material. The only two viable solutions I’ve seen are a) have the work done entirely in class, or b) conduct an oral exam where the student defends the essay. Both of these have significant challenges.

Both suggestions could still be completed 100% by AI without any understanding of the material

I really don’t think so. Or at least not well. I actually really like the first idea, because if you want to cheat with it, it would almost certainly not come out well.

But, more importantly, I always found that the best way for me to learn something was to have to teach it to someone else. And that’s what that first idea really simulates.

Re: Re: 2x2 inch cheat sheet

You remind me of the teachers that told everyone they were allowed a 2×2 inch cheat sheet for the test which they could turn in. A most memorable way to get the homework done.

Re: Re: Re: The Danny Dunn homework computer solution

With a magnifying glass and a 2″x2″ microfiche card, you can get a lot in.

At which point the teacher gives you credit because of the work you did to put the card together.

ai to write an essay

Re: Re: Re: 2

Well, that, and such tests are usually timed. And finding information on such a card can take comparatively a lot of time.

Re: Re: Re: 3

Plus, in some cases, needing to understand which information is actually relevant to the question, and how to use it properly.

For example, I remember how in first year chemistry and physics courses (especially units on thermodynamics) a fair number of “straight ‘A'” and “reliable ‘B'” students were suddenly running into a lot of difficulty they didn’t know how to deal with.

These students were well-practiced in finding “the right values” for the right variables in a formulae, and if necessary juggling the formulae a bit to isolate the variable they were trying to calculate, but this was no longer sufficient to obtain the right answer.

Because there was now more than one formulae that had the same variables, and they now needed to really understand/have insight into what was going on in all those formulas, a cheat sheet (and these were allowed) with all the formulae they were expected to use wasn’t all that much help to them).

Yeah, trying to use ChatGPT to sound like something better than ChatGPT is like using the Enterprise computer to invent a villain capable of out-thinking Data. Interesting dramatic concept, pretty much impossible in execution. If it is capable of being better than it is, why doesn’t it just…do it all the time?

started with Turn It In

My kids were in school when the district mandated the use of turnitin.com. late 90s early 2000s, biggest IP issue was really “stealing music”.

That company’s proposition was to store everything written by students and cross check it, looking for plagerized, or paid for material.

I hit the roof because my kid’s work and all other student’s work is owned by them, and they are minors, so can not agree to a contract to assign the work for unconpensated use by anyone else.

A lawyer friend (nog IP lawyer ) offered that perhaps student homework is a work for hire, so is already assigned to the teacher/school/district.

Anyway I went to the school board meeting and told them what they were doing was abusive, non compensatory, confiscative… Against the 13 Amendment!

Anyway, I asked, wtf is wrong with asking the teachers to do their jobs! They know the kids, they have fine honed senses and experience, they are really good at detecting plagiarism.

The board sure got an earful from me, and no other parents were at all concerned.

Sounds good. but can we just make it a requirement that the regulatory bodies have to directly be the ones to magic away the problems?

Cut out those pesky Tech companies out of the equation. Why should they get any credit for magicking away problems?

That’s been tried. The results have consistently ranged from ‘ludicrous’ to ‘horrific’.

Silly me. I was sure the word “magicking”, as applied to real world things, would tip people off that this was not a serious and literal conversation.

I remember when I was taking an online college course that I had to rewrite some dumb half page or page summary and it got flagged because it was too similar to a previous one of my own because they were both generic bs I had to write about the same thing. Because automated software decided I was plagiarizing myself I had to purposely write differently just to get any grade.

That was before AI. Asking if something was written by Ai is not possible. All these systems will do is make pain for students and waste tax payer money.

Once AI pedagogy has been sold to every school district, and once all the ensuing litigation is over, nothing will have benefited except tech bros and sales bros. It’s the American way.

γνῶθι σεαυτόν

I have my doubts that training basic AI engines to distinguish texts written by humans from texts written by advanced AI engines trained with human-written texts with the goal of being hard to distinguish from texts not written by humans is going to work all that well.

In a nutshell, meta means harder. An advanced AI might recognize a less advanced AI’s work. But those AI checkers running on a normal computer work with the reversed odds.

ai to write an essay

Maybe I'm an AI

I ran some content I wrote through a few AI checkers, and most gave me a high confidence score that the text was AI-generated.

I then created a block of text with ChatGPT, removed the more obvious AI buzzwords, and submitted it. The AI checkers all concluded that it was most likely created by a human.

If schools are planning to use these tools to evaluate students’ work, they need to consider the high likelihood of false positives.

Of course, there’s still the chance that I’m an AI, and no one bothered to tell me.

Within the year, all the students subjected to AI supervision will know how to do this.

AI ethics and writing

As a teacher of writing at a university where English is not the native language, I have been wringing my hands over the use of AI for months. Before that it was plagiarism and Google Translate. My instincts reject such artificial help and some of the questions raised here help me to focus. Mike’s son of course uses words he has read/learned and this highlights a point several students have made concerning Turnitin which the university relies on heavily for thesis work. Students complain that everyday words/phrases are flagged as well as engineering/technical phrasing; but as they point out, all their input has been from textbooks and journal articles, so this absorbed content flavors their output. The comment on “delve” and its possible source was revealing. I rely on my own experience over several years (reading/writing/editing) and can sense (stylistically) direct student input, translated input, copied input and the bland output that AI, Grammerly, et al tend to produce.

It reminds me of that proto-AI website “is it porn” . Fun stuff.

Unless someone comes along and says “lower number better” for the AI checker I wouldn’t even begin to worry about it.

I honestly think culture is already most of the way dead and simply hasn’t fallen over yet. 99% of “people” (quoted ’cause I’ve no idea how many are bots) I see writing anything online could be switched out for anyone else from those 99% and I wouldn’t be able to tell.

Add the fact all algorithms are geared toward “engagement”, and crown it with American “sensibilities” (read: their deathly fear of words arbitrarily deemed “bad” – like ‘fuck’ and ‘suicide’) and we end up with the cesspit that is YouTube, for example, and that’s before shit like a half-assed LLM ruining kids’ futures even enters the picture.

This’ll only get worse until US corporations are regulated. Which is to say it won’t, until and unless children of corpo-rats and/or politicians are affected.

Obviously, since you are a reporter, you are AI.

Why A.I. Isn’t Going to Make Art

In 1953, Roald Dahl published “ The Great Automatic Grammatizator ,” a short story about an electrical engineer who secretly desires to be a writer. One day, after completing construction of the world’s fastest calculating machine, the engineer realizes that “English grammar is governed by rules that are almost mathematical in their strictness.” He constructs a fiction-writing machine that can produce a five-thousand-word short story in thirty seconds; a novel takes fifteen minutes and requires the operator to manipulate handles and foot pedals, as if he were driving a car or playing an organ, to regulate the levels of humor and pathos. The resulting novels are so popular that, within a year, half the fiction published in English is a product of the engineer’s invention.

Is there anything about art that makes us think it can’t be created by pushing a button, as in Dahl’s imagination? Right now, the fiction generated by large language models like ChatGPT is terrible, but one can imagine that such programs might improve in the future. How good could they get? Could they get better than humans at writing fiction—or making paintings or movies—in the same way that calculators are better at addition and subtraction?

Art is notoriously hard to define, and so are the differences between good art and bad art. But let me offer a generalization: art is something that results from making a lot of choices. This might be easiest to explain if we use fiction writing as an example. When you are writing fiction, you are—consciously or unconsciously—making a choice about almost every word you type; to oversimplify, we can imagine that a ten-thousand-word short story requires something on the order of ten thousand choices. When you give a generative-A.I. program a prompt, you are making very few choices; if you supply a hundred-word prompt, you have made on the order of a hundred choices.

If an A.I. generates a ten-thousand-word story based on your prompt, it has to fill in for all of the choices that you are not making. There are various ways it can do this. One is to take an average of the choices that other writers have made, as represented by text found on the Internet; that average is equivalent to the least interesting choices possible, which is why A.I.-generated text is often really bland. Another is to instruct the program to engage in style mimicry, emulating the choices made by a specific writer, which produces a highly derivative story. In neither case is it creating interesting art.

I think the same underlying principle applies to visual art, although it’s harder to quantify the choices that a painter might make. Real paintings bear the mark of an enormous number of decisions. By comparison, a person using a text-to-image program like DALL-E enters a prompt such as “A knight in a suit of armor fights a fire-breathing dragon,” and lets the program do the rest. (The newest version of DALL-E accepts prompts of up to four thousand characters—hundreds of words, but not enough to describe every detail of a scene.) Most of the choices in the resulting image have to be borrowed from similar paintings found online; the image might be exquisitely rendered, but the person entering the prompt can’t claim credit for that.

Some commentators imagine that image generators will affect visual culture as much as the advent of photography once did. Although this might seem superficially plausible, the idea that photography is similar to generative A.I. deserves closer examination. When photography was first developed, I suspect it didn’t seem like an artistic medium because it wasn’t apparent that there were a lot of choices to be made; you just set up the camera and start the exposure. But over time people realized that there were a vast number of things you could do with cameras, and the artistry lies in the many choices that a photographer makes. It might not always be easy to articulate what the choices are, but when you compare an amateur’s photos to a professional’s, you can see the difference. So then the question becomes: Is there a similar opportunity to make a vast number of choices using a text-to-image generator? I think the answer is no. An artist—whether working digitally or with paint—implicitly makes far more decisions during the process of making a painting than would fit into a text prompt of a few hundred words.

We can imagine a text-to-image generator that, over the course of many sessions, lets you enter tens of thousands of words into its text box to enable extremely fine-grained control over the image you’re producing; this would be something analogous to Photoshop with a purely textual interface. I’d say that a person could use such a program and still deserve to be called an artist. The film director Bennett Miller has used DALL-E 2 to generate some very striking images that have been exhibited at the Gagosian gallery; to create them, he crafted detailed text prompts and then instructed DALL-E to revise and manipulate the generated images again and again. He generated more than a hundred thousand images to arrive at the twenty images in the exhibit. But he has said that he hasn’t been able to obtain comparable results on later releases of DALL-E . I suspect this might be because Miller was using DALL-E for something it’s not intended to do; it’s as if he hacked Microsoft Paint to make it behave like Photoshop, but as soon as a new version of Paint was released, his hacks stopped working. OpenAI probably isn’t trying to build a product to serve users like Miller, because a product that requires a user to work for months to create an image isn’t appealing to a wide audience. The company wants to offer a product that generates images with little effort.

It’s harder to imagine a program that, over many sessions, helps you write a good novel. This hypothetical writing program might require you to enter a hundred thousand words of prompts in order for it to generate an entirely different hundred thousand words that make up the novel you’re envisioning. It’s not clear to me what such a program would look like. Theoretically, if such a program existed, the user could perhaps deserve to be called the author. But, again, I don’t think companies like OpenAI want to create versions of ChatGPT that require just as much effort from users as writing a novel from scratch. The selling point of generative A.I. is that these programs generate vastly more than you put into them, and that is precisely what prevents them from being effective tools for artists.

The companies promoting generative-A.I. programs claim that they will unleash creativity. In essence, they are saying that art can be all inspiration and no perspiration—but these things cannot be easily separated. I’m not saying that art has to involve tedium. What I’m saying is that art requires making choices at every scale; the countless small-scale choices made during implementation are just as important to the final product as the few large-scale choices made during the conception. It is a mistake to equate “large-scale” with “important” when it comes to the choices made when creating art; the interrelationship between the large scale and the small scale is where the artistry lies.

Believing that inspiration outweighs everything else is, I suspect, a sign that someone is unfamiliar with the medium. I contend that this is true even if one’s goal is to create entertainment rather than high art. People often underestimate the effort required to entertain; a thriller novel may not live up to Kafka’s ideal of a book—an “axe for the frozen sea within us”—but it can still be as finely crafted as a Swiss watch. And an effective thriller is more than its premise or its plot. I doubt you could replace every sentence in a thriller with one that is semantically equivalent and have the resulting novel be as entertaining. This means that its sentences—and the small-scale choices they represent—help to determine the thriller’s effectiveness.

Many novelists have had the experience of being approached by someone convinced that they have a great idea for a novel, which they are willing to share in exchange for a fifty-fifty split of the proceeds. Such a person inadvertently reveals that they think formulating sentences is a nuisance rather than a fundamental part of storytelling in prose. Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium. But the creators of traditional novels, paintings, and films are drawn to those art forms because they see the unique expressive potential that each medium affords. It is their eagerness to take full advantage of those potentialities that makes their work satisfying, whether as entertainment or as art.

Of course, most pieces of writing, whether articles or reports or e-mails, do not come with the expectation that they embody thousands of choices. In such cases, is there any harm in automating the task? Let me offer another generalization: any writing that deserves your attention as a reader is the result of effort expended by the person who wrote it. Effort during the writing process doesn’t guarantee the end product is worth reading, but worthwhile work cannot be made without it. The type of attention you pay when reading a personal e-mail is different from the type you pay when reading a business report, but in both cases it is only warranted when the writer put some thought into it.

Recently, Google aired a commercial during the Paris Olympics for Gemini, its competitor to OpenAI’s GPT-4 . The ad shows a father using Gemini to compose a fan letter, which his daughter will send to an Olympic athlete who inspires her. Google pulled the commercial after widespread backlash from viewers; a media professor called it “one of the most disturbing commercials I’ve ever seen.” It’s notable that people reacted this way, even though artistic creativity wasn’t the attribute being supplanted. No one expects a child’s fan letter to an athlete to be extraordinary; if the young girl had written the letter herself, it would likely have been indistinguishable from countless others. The significance of a child’s fan letter—both to the child who writes it and to the athlete who receives it—comes from its being heartfelt rather than from its being eloquent.

Many of us have sent store-bought greeting cards, knowing that it will be clear to the recipient that we didn’t compose the words ourselves. We don’t copy the words from a Hallmark card in our own handwriting, because that would feel dishonest. The programmer Simon Willison has described the training for large language models as “money laundering for copyrighted data,” which I find a useful way to think about the appeal of generative-A.I. programs: they let you engage in something like plagiarism, but there’s no guilt associated with it because it’s not clear even to you that you’re copying.

Some have claimed that large language models are not laundering the texts they’re trained on but, rather, learning from them, in the same way that human writers learn from the books they’ve read. But a large language model is not a writer; it’s not even a user of language. Language is, by definition, a system of communication, and it requires an intention to communicate. Your phone’s auto-complete may offer good suggestions or bad ones, but in neither case is it trying to say anything to you or the person you’re texting. The fact that ChatGPT can generate coherent sentences invites us to imagine that it understands language in a way that your phone’s auto-complete does not, but it has no more intention to communicate.

It is very easy to get ChatGPT to emit a series of words such as “I am happy to see you.” There are many things we don’t understand about how large language models work, but one thing we can be sure of is that ChatGPT is not happy to see you. A dog can communicate that it is happy to see you, and so can a prelinguistic child, even though both lack the capability to use words. ChatGPT feels nothing and desires nothing, and this lack of intention is why ChatGPT is not actually using language. What makes the words “I’m happy to see you” a linguistic utterance is not that the sequence of text tokens that it is made up of are well formed; what makes it a linguistic utterance is the intention to communicate something.

Because language comes so easily to us, it’s easy to forget that it lies on top of these other experiences of subjective feeling and of wanting to communicate that feeling. We’re tempted to project those experiences onto a large language model when it emits coherent sentences, but to do so is to fall prey to mimicry; it’s the same phenomenon as when butterflies evolve large dark spots on their wings that can fool birds into thinking they’re predators with big eyes. There is a context in which the dark spots are sufficient; birds are less likely to eat a butterfly that has them, and the butterfly doesn’t really care why it’s not being eaten, as long as it gets to live. But there is a big difference between a butterfly and a predator that poses a threat to a bird.

A person using generative A.I. to help them write might claim that they are drawing inspiration from the texts the model was trained on, but I would again argue that this differs from what we usually mean when we say one writer draws inspiration from another. Consider a college student who turns in a paper that consists solely of a five-page quotation from a book, stating that this quotation conveys exactly what she wanted to say, better than she could say it herself. Even if the student is completely candid with the instructor about what she’s done, it’s not accurate to say that she is drawing inspiration from the book she’s citing. The fact that a large language model can reword the quotation enough that the source is unidentifiable doesn’t change the fundamental nature of what’s going on.

As the linguist Emily M. Bender has noted, teachers don’t ask students to write essays because the world needs more student essays. The point of writing essays is to strengthen students’ critical-thinking skills; in the same way that lifting weights is useful no matter what sport an athlete plays, writing essays develops skills necessary for whatever job a college student will eventually get. Using ChatGPT to complete assignments is like bringing a forklift into the weight room; you will never improve your cognitive fitness that way.

Not all writing needs to be creative, or heartfelt, or even particularly good; sometimes it simply needs to exist. Such writing might support other goals, such as attracting views for advertising or satisfying bureaucratic requirements. When people are required to produce such text, we can hardly blame them for using whatever tools are available to accelerate the process. But is the world better off with more documents that have had minimal effort expended on them? It would be unrealistic to claim that if we refuse to use large language models, then the requirements to create low-quality text will disappear. However, I think it is inevitable that the more we use large language models to fulfill those requirements, the greater those requirements will eventually become. We are entering an era where someone might use a large language model to generate a document out of a bulleted list, and send it to a person who will use a large language model to condense that document into a bulleted list. Can anyone seriously argue that this is an improvement?

It’s not impossible that one day we will have computer programs that can do anything a human being can do, but, contrary to the claims of the companies promoting A.I., that is not something we’ll see in the next few years. Even in domains that have absolutely nothing to do with creativity, current A.I. programs have profound limitations that give us legitimate reasons to question whether they deserve to be called intelligent at all.

The computer scientist François Chollet has proposed the following distinction: skill is how well you perform at a task, while intelligence is how efficiently you gain new skills. I think this reflects our intuitions about human beings pretty well. Most people can learn a new skill given sufficient practice, but the faster the person picks up the skill, the more intelligent we think the person is. What’s interesting about this definition is that—unlike I.Q. tests—it’s also applicable to nonhuman entities; when a dog learns a new trick quickly, we consider that a sign of intelligence.

In 2019, researchers conducted an experiment in which they taught rats how to drive. They put the rats in little plastic containers with three copper-wire bars; when the mice put their paws on one of these bars, the container would either go forward, or turn left or turn right. The rats could see a plate of food on the other side of the room and tried to get their vehicles to go toward it. The researchers trained the rats for five minutes at a time, and after twenty-four practice sessions, the rats had become proficient at driving. Twenty-four trials were enough to master a task that no rat had likely ever encountered before in the evolutionary history of the species. I think that’s a good demonstration of intelligence.

Now consider the current A.I. programs that are widely acclaimed for their performance. AlphaZero, a program developed by Google’s DeepMind, plays chess better than any human player, but during its training it played forty-four million games, far more than any human can play in a lifetime. For it to master a new game, it will have to undergo a similarly enormous amount of training. By Chollet’s definition, programs like AlphaZero are highly skilled, but they aren’t particularly intelligent, because they aren’t efficient at gaining new skills. It is currently impossible to write a computer program capable of learning even a simple task in only twenty-four trials, if the programmer is not given information about the task beforehand.

Self-driving cars trained on millions of miles of driving can still crash into an overturned trailer truck, because such things are not commonly found in their training data, whereas humans taking their first driving class will know to stop. More than our ability to solve algebraic equations, our ability to cope with unfamiliar situations is a fundamental part of why we consider humans intelligent. Computers will not be able to replace humans until they acquire that type of competence, and that is still a long way off; for the time being, we’re just looking for jobs that can be done with turbocharged auto-complete.

Despite years of hype, the ability of generative A.I. to dramatically increase economic productivity remains theoretical. (Earlier this year, Goldman Sachs released a report titled “Gen AI: Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit?”) The task that generative A.I. has been most successful at is lowering our expectations, both of the things we read and of ourselves when we write anything for others to read. It is a fundamentally dehumanizing technology because it treats us as less than what we are: creators and apprehenders of meaning. It reduces the amount of intention in the world.

Some individuals have defended large language models by saying that most of what human beings say or write isn’t particularly original. That is true, but it’s also irrelevant. When someone says “I’m sorry” to you, it doesn’t matter that other people have said sorry in the past; it doesn’t matter that “I’m sorry” is a string of text that is statistically unremarkable. If someone is being sincere, their apology is valuable and meaningful, even though apologies have previously been uttered. Likewise, when you tell someone that you’re happy to see them, you are saying something meaningful, even if it lacks novelty.

Something similar holds true for art. Whether you are creating a novel or a painting or a film, you are engaged in an act of communication between you and your audience. What you create doesn’t have to be utterly unlike every prior piece of art in human history to be valuable; the fact that you’re the one who is saying it, the fact that it derives from your unique life experience and arrives at a particular moment in the life of whoever is seeing your work, is what makes it new. We are all products of what has come before us, but it’s by living our lives in interaction with others that we bring meaning into the world. That is something that an auto-complete algorithm can never do, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. ♦

Opinion | Breaking down ESPN’s decision to use AI to write some game stories

ESPN says AI helps it cover ‘under-served sports.’ Journalists argue the network should just hire more journalists.

ai to write an essay

ESPN made a major announcement on Thursday. The sports media giant announced it would implement artificial intelligence to write game recap stories for the Premier Lacrosse League and National Women’s Soccer League.

As with anything involving the rapidly changing alliance of AI and journalism, what followed were lots of questions and a little uneasiness.

ESPN is making the case that AI helps it cover “under-served sports” — leagues that ESPN currently does not fully cover with flesh-and-blood sportswriters. In other words, this argument seems to be that using AI to cover sports or leagues is better than not covering them at all.

On the other hand? The fear among living and breathing journalists that this is a slippery slope, and that AI is taking their jobs. They say: Instead of using AI to write lacrosse and soccer stories, why doesn’t ESPN just hire more journalists? And if ESPN can use AI to cover those sports, what’s to stop them from using AI to cover more and more other sports?

In its announcement , ESPN laid out the crux of its argument: “The AI-generated recaps aim to enhance coverage of under-served sports, providing fans with content that was previously unavailable. These sports do not currently have game recaps on ESPN digital platforms, and these AI-generated recaps will be a tool to augment existing coverage — not replace it.”

ESPN added, “Each AI-generated recap will be reviewed by a human editor to ensure quality and accuracy.”

ESPN also announced that it will be clear which stories were generated by AI. The top of the story, where the traditional byline would be, will say, “ESPN Generative AI Services.” After the story, there will be a tagline that says, “ESPN Generative AI Services creates recaps from event data and/or transcripts that are reviewed by human editors before posting; email [email protected] for corrections.”

The new plan will go into effect today.

ESPN said in its statement, “The aim is to learn, determine how to responsibly leverage new technology, and begin to establish best practices — all while augmenting our existing coverage of select sports and allowing ESPN staff to focus on their more differentiating feature, analysis, investigative, and breaking news coverage.”

That last part is an argument that many in the journalism world point to when considering the benefits of AI: that the use of the technology to write simpler articles, such as a game story, frees up their journalists to work on bigger, so-called “more important” stories.

At ESPN’s recent “Media Day” meeting with reporters, ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said, “AI is not the awful, terrible disruptor that many people think it will be. I personally believe that AI will be very helpful and beneficial to the sports industry and the sports fan, and we’re starting to see that.”

Pitaro gave examples of using the technology to cut highlights of, again, lesser-covered sports. Pitaro also talked about closed captioning, saying, “How do we do closed captioning at scale? AI is already helping us significantly there. I commute. I drive myself to Bristol every day. It’s an hour drive for me each way. And I want to consume our long-form reporting, our investigative reporting, which is super high quality. Having the ability to just click play and hear the narration of a long-form investigative story is incredibly valuable to me as a commuter. Those are some examples of how we see this as nothing but positive for the sports fan and for the business.”

ESPN is not the first news organization to implement AI this way. Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming notes that The Associated Press uses AI.

An AP spokesperson told Fleming, “AP uses artificial intelligence and automation when it can free up our journalists to do more meaningful work. We use AI to produce audio-to-text transcriptions, create short lists in predictable environments, tag content for search, and write corporate earnings reports and some sports preview and recap stories. We also use automation for the distribution of financial markets and sports data.”

But all this still makes some in the journalism world queasy.

Besides doing a job that has always been for actual journalists, AI is not known for writing particularly captivating stories.

In a column for Defector , Luis Paez-Pumar wrote, “The upshot would be that ESPN is beefing up its coverage of ‘underserved’ sports (and who, pray tell, is responsible for this underserving?) not by hiring people who can and already do write these kinds of stories, but rather by feeding existing soccer and lacrosse journalists’ work into a machine aimed at making them obsolete. Or, at least, it will try to make them obsolete; nothing about AI’s recent history points to this being successful in any way except fattening the wallets of AI’s self-interested investor-evangelists.”

The AI train continues to plow forward, and ESPN is clearly jumping aboard. Used responsibly and judiciously, AI could be a helpful and worthwhile tool for any media company without being a detriment to real journalists. But if the real goal is to simply save money by using AI, particularly when it’s an inferior product to a reasonably good journalist, it’s hard to get on board if you’re a media consumer.

I’m willing to give ESPN the benefit of the doubt when it comes to using AI  to cover sports leagues they have never really covered. But is this really just a trial balloon? If so, let’s see what comes next before we declare this a good or bad idea.

Sulzberger’s powerful essay

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger wrote a powerful essay Thursday about the “quiet war” against press freedoms in the United States. And he wrote his lengthy piece for, of all places, the Times’ chief competitor — The Washington Post. More on that decision in a moment.

But let’s get to what Sulzberger wrote.

Sulzberger asks if the playbook used by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to dismantle the news media in his country could be repeated here.

Sulzberger wrote, “It’s not a crazy question. As they seek a return to the White House, former president Donald Trump and his allies have declared their intention to increase their attacks on a press he has long derided as ‘the enemy of the people.’”

He added, “If Trump follows through on promises to continue that campaign in a second term, his efforts would likely be informed by his open admiration for the ruthlessly effective playbook of authoritarians such as Orbán, whom Trump recently met with at Mar-a-Lago and praised as ‘a smart, strong, and compassionate leader.’”

Sulzberger said he and colleagues have studied how press freedoms have been attacked in places such as Hungary, India and Brazil. The countries may be different, but the playbooks are the same. They include things such as sowing distrust in the media; normalizing harassment of journalists; exploiting the courts to, as Sulzberger wrote, “effectively impose additional logistical and financial penalties on disfavored journalism;” and, again as Sulzberger wrote, “use the levers of power not just to punish independent journalists but also to reward those who demonstrate fealty to their leadership.”

That certainly sounds familiar in this country under a certain former president.

Sulzberger wrote, “As that list makes clear, these leaders have realized that crackdowns on the press are most effective when they’re at their least dramatic — not the stuff of thrillers but a movie so plodding and complicated that no one wants to watch it.”

Sulzberger made it clear that it is not his intention to wade into politics, adding, “I disagree with those who have suggested that the risk Trump poses to the free press is so high that news organizations such as mine should cast aside neutrality and directly oppose his reelection. It is beyond shortsighted to give up journalistic independence out of fear that it might later be taken away.”

He later added, “At the same time, as the steward of one of the country’s leading news organizations, I feel compelled to speak out about threats to the free press, as my predecessors and I have done to leaders of both parties. I am doing so here, in the pages of an esteemed competitor, because I believe the risk is shared by our entire profession, as well as all who depend on it.”

This is an important essay that cannot be adequately summed up here. Carve out 20 minutes to read it.

Meanwhile, Sulzberger addressed why he offered his piece to the Post in a memo to his staff at the Times, writing, “I’m grateful to The Post for running it, especially given the length. It’s just another example of how The Post, in addition to being an esteemed competitor, has long been one of our closest partners on matters of press freedom. These challenges cannot be solved by one institution.”

Can AI Make Art?

Ted Chiang with a thought-provoking essay on Why A.I. Isn’t Going to Make Art :

Nearly every argument made in this piece could have been made (and probably was made) when the camera was invented. For example, the supposedly disparaging comment: "A product that generates images with little effort"

LLMs and AI image generators are just tools. Nothing more, nothing less. They are like cameras or paintbrushes. They must be wielded to produce art. Some cameras, say, wildlife cameras that flash whenever something steps on a pressure pad, aren't wielded and don't produce art. LLMs can do that whenever I ask ChatGPT to summarize a long document. That's not art. But when a person conceives a writing prompt and works with the tool over many iterations to craft a story... how is that different from an artist using any other tool?

These reflexive "AI-isn't-art" points of view are based on a wildly outdated view of how art is made. We have long celebrated video artists working in digital media. We cry when playing video games (at least I have). We, perhaps with some debate, accept art made by worker bees overseen by the actual "artist". Why is a person working with prompts any less of an artist than any of these artists? Simply put, they aren't.

AI left to its own devices won't spontaneously produce art, just as a camera left on a shelf won't magically take a picture, but it is a tool that can produce beautiful things and should be embraced and celebrated. We are living in an age when a new art form has been forged and that is a tremendously exciting thing.

The way I read it, Chiang is arguing that LLMs are not creators by themselves, just as a camera or Photoshop is not a creator — they're tools, as you point out. What the LLM companies & enthusiasts would have you believe is that these AIs are creative entities in their own right, capable of producing creative work with very little effort. Chiang points out that these tools can be used to create art (just like literally anything can) but the human effort involved (the time, the choices, the curiosity, the emotion, the desire to communicate) is what makes it art (rather than the output of spicy autocomplete ).

I don't know. It seems a very fine - and arbitrary - line to draw when he says that AI can't produce art because it limits you to a prompt with hundreds of words, whereas an *Artist* makes many more individual choices in the creation of *Art*. He even acknowledges that you can produce art iteratively using AI by running hundreds of prompts and making thousands of images to get one final piece of art. So where is the line between an AI-created image and art? How is this different from a photographer taking hundreds of images to get the final piece? Why do we feel the need to define this at all?

I agree that artists should be compensated for having their work used to train AIs. And the resulting output of AIs is derivative to an extent on the artwork, photography, and internet junk used to train it, but I still believe and embrace what it produces as exciting and, in many cases, beautiful and engaging art.

The argument that was most compelling to me was about non-creative writing:

There is already lots of bullshit writing to accompany (Graeberean) bullshit jobs. Creating more of it, and making it even shittier, seems like a bad idea.
