1. Replace the Dummy Text

The first step is to replace the dummy text with your own information. To do that, open your company CV template in Photoshop and click on the folder that says Text to expand it and reveal all the text layers. 

Then, click on the eye icon next to any text layer to temporarily hide that layer. This will allow you to see which information you'll be editing. 

Once you know where your text layer is on the Photoshop document, click the T icon. Highlight the text and enter your own information.

2. Change the Fonts

As you're editing the text, change the fonts at the same time. To do so, highlight the text and then choose a different font from the drop-down menu at the top.

3. Customize Colors

Once you’ve customized the fonts and entered your own information, the next step is to customize the colors to your own liking. In the example below, I’ve clicked on the Vector Elements group and expanded it to reveal all the layers. Then, click on an individual layer and select the shape. Change the color using the color picker tool.

4. Add Your Own Image

Lastly, replace the dummy image with your own profile photo or with your logo. To do so, locate the image on your computer and drag it onto your Photoshop document. Press SHIFT + CMD + T to resize the image and then drag it into place.

Many business people have undergraduate degrees in business administration or a related field, but that is not a hard-and-fast rule. No matter what you majored in, your business resume is incomplete without an education section.

Once again, employ reverse-chronological order, so if you have an MBA or doctorate, list that first. If either is the case, there’s no need for you to include your high school experience. Your GPA is also only relevant if you have just graduated and it is 3.5 or above. If you are still in school, list your anticipated graduation date.

The Header is what the recruiter will see first. It should contain your name, address, phone number, email, and social media accounts.

But wait? What should I write if I have no experience and achievements and I apply for an entry or training position in the corporate world? Well, in this case, you should add an Objective section instead of a Summary. There you can describe what you want to achieve with your new job and how you intend to use your motivation to help the company.

Next is the Work Experience section . This is the essence of the resume. Try to be short and precise and show some numbers. List your experience in a reverse-chronological order starting with the most recent post. Include the name of the organization with a brief overview, its location, and your job title. Show the period of your employment by adding month and year. Use bullet points to present your duties and responsibilities through the prism of your accomplishments.

Make sure to leave no gaps in your work history or be prepared to explain it during the interview. If a position is not relevant, you worked there a very long time ago, it was in a different industry, or you only worked there for a short period you may not include it depending on the case. The other option is to include it but exclude any details and list it just for the record.

After the Work Experience Section, you can place your Education section . Do not include your High School information if it is not relevant to the position. Start listing your degrees in reverse chronological order.

If you decide to use a two-column format, you can add your Achievements and Skills section just opposite the Education and Work Experience sections, aligned right. In this way, you can put emphasis on the most important information and present it right at the beginning of the document. You can use stylized icons in both sections. Use keywords and short phrases. Make sure to support the information you share in both sections with more details in the Job Experience and Education sections.

In the Achievements section, you could add not only job-related information but also academic or other achievements that are relevant.

The same applies to the Skills section. You can list skills acquired on the job or through courses and education.

Do I need to include any Additional sections ? We recommend you include a Languages section if you speak foreign languages. Languages are very useful in the corporate world. Especially if you work at an international corporation. A foreign language can open the gates to lucrative positions abroad and make you a very prospective candidate for every organization.

In a corporate resume, you could also include more sections such as Certificates, Awards, Projects, etc.

Number of pages

One-page resumes are the best choice in almost any case. The executive resume is one exception. The reason is that unless you are applying for an entry corporate position, chances are your Job Experience will not fit on one page. Feel free to add a new page for every ten years of Job Experience you have.

This template is geared toward job seekers who want to call out the specific job they’re looking for by putting the title front and center. It can be downloaded with headers that come in five different color options, including forest green and aquatic blue.

Jobscan’s focus is on helping people get past an ATS and, as a result, their templates stick closely to ATS-friendly formatting. The “classic format resume - chronological” is exactly what it sounds like: a basic, classic resume with a focus on your experience in reverse chronological order. The template also comes in a functional format as well as a hybrid format .

This template is a solid, traditional choice. Just delete the objective section or make it a summary instead, and change the “Expertise” label to “Skills.” (To download this one, scroll to the green hyperlink that reads, “Download This Template).”)

This simple resume from Microsoft Word is straightforward but adds a few more design elements in the form of horizontal bars to break up the text (though they can also be removed if you prefer).

These resume templates are still pretty basic, but they use color to make key elements stand out and liven up your resume a bit. Pro tip: You can almost always change the color to suit your preferences (or even add a pop of color to any of the other templates in this list).

This chronological template has plenty of space to include a strong resume summary at the top and reiterate your most relevant skills at the bottom.

This simple ATS-friendly template downloads as a Microsoft Word file and has space for a title and summary. Its use of color gives it a bit more zing than some of the more bare-bones options.

Here’s another Career Reload template that takes advantage of ATS-friendly design elements to give you something a little more unique. But make sure to swap out the “Career Objective” for a “ Summary ” section (or just get rid of it entirely).

This ATS-friendly resume template adds some color to help your name, headings, and the places you’ve worked and studied stand out. You can find this resume under the “Simple Resume Templates” heading at the link above.

The “elegant” template from Resume Companion injects colored bars to highlight sections but maintains the traditional bulleted format. Note that you can (and should) delete the footer of the document since that information is already at the top.

Free minimalist resume templates

If you want a sleek, distraction-free resume that lets your skills and experience speak for themselves, check out these basic, no-frills templates.

This entirely unembellished template keeps things as simple as possible but still has room for all of your most relevant details.

File format: PDF, Microsoft Word

This is another option with a step-by-step walkthrough that’s good for someone who wants a completely utilitarian resume. Once completed, the resume can be downloaded as a PDF or Word file.Note: You should definitely delete the date of birth section.

This site’s template for applicant tracking systems is the lowest of low-frills—but that may be perfectly fine if you’re seeking a no-risk option that still includes everything you need.

This template is another simple option that places section headers on the left and details on the right, creating a good amount of white space. (Note that these columns can be read from left to right, so they’re perfectly ATS friendly.) Just be sure to delete the “References” section—these don’t belong on your resume in 2023.

Free eye-catching resume templates

These templates are perfect for people who want their resumes to stand out from the pack—but still get read by a computer.

File format: PDF, Google Doc, TXT

Every Cultivated Culture template is fully customizable—so you can eliminate any elements that aren’t ATS-friendly. We recommend the Austin Belcak template as a starting point. Just be sure to replace the graph-based skills section with a traditional bulleted list.

This is another Cultivated Culture template that will get through the ATS with just one change: Delete the “Interests” section to eliminate the columns (you don’t really need it anyway).

File format: PDF, DOCX, DOC, HTML

If you want columns, this template includes them in a way that can still be read by an ATS. Just be sure to move your name and contact info out of the text box it’s currently in (where it might get missed or garbled by the ATS) and into the body of the resume. You can customize your resume directly in your web browser and download it as a PDF, Word, or HTML file. Not all of Super Resume’s templates are ATS-friendly (some include graphics and columns), but you can also check out “Resume Template 5” and “Resume Template 6” for more options.

File format: PSD, PDF, Word

This template places the most emphasis on the personal summary at the top and keeps the job experience straightforward in the body. It’s ideal for specialized fields in which getting to know the applicant as a person is key (in this case, chefs and restaurant employees who may interact closely with customers and clients, but it can be adapted to any field). Just be sure to tweak the section headings to common ones for your industry.

This template keeps things short, elegant, and easy to read. The colored graphic at the top adds a nice design element to stand out, especially against a straightforward layout that places your most recent job experience at the top and education and skills below. Just be sure to delete the icons next to the contact information and move it to the body of the resume.

File format: DOCX, PSD, AI

Don’t be fooled by the erasable icons—this template may have a modern look but it keeps things simple and compact. Keep in mind that some ATSs will read your resume from left to right, ignoring columns, so we recommend including either the job title or timeframe in the left column (not both!) and moving the other piece of information to the right.

Free skill-emphasizing resume templates

If you’re early in your career, switching career paths, or in a highly technical field, you may want to spotlight your relevant skills over your past work experience. These templates do just that.

This template puts less emphasis on your formal work experience, and plays up your accomplishments, skills, and strengths—ideal for someone who is trying to switch careers. It can also be a smart choice for freelancers, or folks who've taken a career gap to focus on family or travels. 

This option prioritizes job seekers’ skills, placing that section at the top of the resume. If you’re making a big career change, you can keep the objective section ; otherwise delete it or replace it with a summary statement.

File format:  DOCX

This template gives plenty of space to both list and expand on your most important skills right up top. Plus the columns are fully ATS friendly and the pop of color will catch the eyes of your reader.

This template highlights applicants’ academic histories as well as skills and abilities, making it a good match for a graduate student or anyone in academia. This could also be expanded into a full CV by adding your publications, presentations, conferences, and awards. As always, ditch the resume objective or replace it with a summary!

Word’s computer programmer resume maximizes space for computer skills (which you may want to rename “Technical Skills”), education, and experience, which are key for software engineering applicants to include. But you could easily tweak this template to work well in other fields.

This template emphasizes both skills and experiences, but places key skills most prominently at the top—with room further down to put them in context and expand on your related accomplishments.

If you’re applying for a new job within your current company, the resume you create may emphasize different things than if you were applying to a new employer. Word’s internal transfer resume highlights accomplishments and skills while placing general information (like education) at the bottom. There is some formatting that might trip up an ATS—but if you remove the main resume text from the text box and place it in the body with “match destination format” selected, you should be good to go. Then you can restore the colors if you’d like.

Free resume templates for experienced job seekers

These templates are ideal for people with longer work histories.

Jobscan created this resume for people who aren’t ready for management just yet but are well past entry-level. This hybrid template places an emphasis on hard skills, but still has room to put those skills in context—perfect for applicant tracking systems.

Rising to the top of the ranks? Jobscan’s “New executive resume template 3” puts an emphasis on results while allowing more space up top to quickly highlight your biggest achievements. This template is more than one page to account for a more extensive work history.

This chronological template is good for people with more work experience and it gives space for job seekers to fill in both a position summary and bullet points. You can use this if you want to emphasize key achievements or special projects from your past jobs. Just make sure to delete the “Find My Profession” image from the template.

This ATS resume template highlights industry knowledge, interpersonal skills, the ability to delegate, and leadership qualities. The summary and skills at the top let you put the most important pieces of a longer work history front and center—for when it’s time for a human to look at your resume.

Free resume templates for entry-level job seekers

If you’re just starting out in your career, you might want a template that showcases your education and relevant skills over your past work experience.

Like many recent grad resume templates, this option places collegiate experience at the top. But it also gives you two sections for work experience (relevant and additional) so that you can place that internship from junior year ahead of your pizza-delivering gig. Jobscan’s other recent grad templates are strong choices as well.

This template is a very simple starter resume that highlights recent grads’ education, skills, abilities, and experience. Just remember to swap out that objective for a resume summary (or delete it).

This template is geared toward undergraduate students seeking investment banking job opportunities (but it can easily be tweaked for other industries). In just one page, it includes space to list your education, study abroad and/or internship experiences, undergraduate leadership positions, and skills and interests (both personal and professional).

Free Adobe resume templates

These more stylized templates require the Adobe suite to edit, so they’re not for everyone. Just make sure you save your final resume as a PDF so the ATS can still read it.

File format: AI

Need a little more space? This two-page template injects more personality with golden accent colors but is still professional. You can make this option even better (for both humans and robots) by nixing the line graphs in the “Skills” and “Language” sections, and sticking to text instead. Since the ATS might read your resume straight across (from left to right, ignoring columns) you should adjust what text you put in the left column so that the text still makes sense if read this way.

File format: PSD

Despite a two-column format in the education section (which you can turn into one), the graphs on page two (which you can replace with text), and a photo (which you should remove), this template is a strong choice if you want to stand out without being too flashy. The blue font adds an extra design element but everything else is straightforward and modern.

This option requires you to have an Adobe account—but it’s free if you’re already set up. The bold color pattern ensures that you’ll stand out, even with very traditional formatting that places a brief personal summary at the top, experience and education in the middle rows, and skills at the bottom. The Adobe Spark logo in the bottom right corner can be removed.

As always, delete the photo box and stick to text. This option comes with a second resume page and cover letter template you can use if needed. The numbers to the left of the job titles can be removed and the line graphs on the second page can be replaced with text.

My favorite part of being a business analyst was that no two days were the same. One day I might be deep in the weeds of complex SQL queries and the next I’d be talking to customers to understand how they used our products.

This wide scope of responsibilities made the job exciting and challenging. No two business analysts have the same job so it can be really hard to know what to put on your resume to appease hiring managers at different companies.

I’ve hired business analysts, I’ve applied to jobs as a business analyst, and I’ve reviewed thousands of business analyst resumes at this point in my career. Fundamentally,  you have to make the case that you’re capable of having a meaningful impact on the business you’re applying to .

This holds true whether you’re an entry-level business analyst looking for your first full-time role or you’re a senior business analyst looking for a promotion to management. Make your case that you’ll have a meaningful, positive impact in the role you’re applying for.

In short, here are the ways to make sure you accomplish that:

  • You need to include the right skills on your resume to get past the automated keyword filters that companies use. Then you need to convince the hiring manager that you deserve an interview.
  • Follow the basic rules of resume formatting. Keep it to one page, don’t get too fancy with your resume design, and don’t have any spelling or grammar errors.
  • With your work experience and projects convince the hiring manager you can have a positive impact on their business by quantifying the impact of your past work.

How to showcase your business analyst skills

Compared to other tech roles, the scope of hard skills that business analysts need to have are relatively consistent across companies.

While the kind of analysis that a business analyst does from role to role varies drastically, the underlying tenets of the role remain the same. A business data analyst takes in data and leverages their insights to improve business processes or operations.

Whether that happens through forecasting, pricing, reporting, or statistical analysis, the toolbox that a successful BA needs to have is well defined.

First, you need to be able to prep data for analysis. More often than not, companies store their data in relational databases. So this means you need to know SQL to pull and clean that data.

If the quantity of data that a company has is significantly smaller, you might get all the data you need to analyze right in (usually very sloppy) Excel workbooks.

After the data is prepped you need to do your analysis. That can come in the form of interactive models (in which case you’ll likely be using Excel) or you might need to do a more sophisticated analysis in Python or R.

Finally, you need a way to present your findings. Again, sometimes this can just be visualizations in Excel (Excel is the true business analyst MVP), sometimes it can be through data visualization in a BI tool like Tableau or Looker, and sometimes it might be through a presentation in PowerPoint.

Skills to include on your business analyst resume

  • SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server)
  • Excel, Google Sheets
  • Powerpoint, Google Slides
  • Tableau, Looker, Chartio
  • Salesforce, Netsuite, Hubspot, Pipedrive
  • A/B testing, linear regression, logistic regression

Notice a theme here?  Only include hard skills in your skills section . Think of it this way: if you were reviewing a resume and someone listed they were a “team player” in their skills section, would that tell you anything about their qualifications?

No, it wouldn’t. Soft skills are best demonstrated in an interview. Listing them on a resume just doesn’t add any value.

The other thing you have to consider is that there are two stages of resume review:

  • Companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to automatically filter out resumes based on certain keyword filters.
  • The hiring manager or HR person in charge of screening for the role will look at your resume.

When companies use keyword filters, they only ever screen for hard skills. So soft skills won’t help you get past phase 1. And like I said before, just listing soft  skills on your resume  won’t convince the hiring manager you actually possess those skills.

How can you balance your skills section to satisfy both the ATS and the hiring manager? First, don’t include a long laundry list of skills. This is a big red flag to the hiring manager even if it will help you get past the ATS.

For example, there is no reason you would include Python, R, Matlab, and SAS on your resume. When it comes to your skills section you want to avoid coming across as a jack of all trades and a master of none.

It’s much better to demonstrate expertise in a handful of skills than a passing understanding of 15-20 skills.

When you’re debating whether or not you should include a given skill on your resume just ask yourself if you’d be comfortable being asked questions about that skill in an interview.

Lying on your resume is one of the only guaranteed ways to make sure you’ll never be able to get a job at a company at some point in the future. For me, I also wouldn’t be able to handle the anxiety of potentially being exposed for a resume lie in an interview. It’s not worth it!

Get your business analyst resume format right

Formatting your resume properly may matter more than you think. For any given BA role a hiring manager reviews 100+ resumes. To that end, they’re looking for a reason to say “no” to any given application they review.

Formatting your resume incorrectly is a quick way to get placed into the “no” pile.  Your goal with formatting your business analyst resume is to make the job of the hiring manager as easy as possible.

Put yourself in their shoes. Given the same exact experience for two candidates would you be more likely to approve the resume that extends to 5 pages or the resume that concisely makes the case for their qualifications?

Here are the high-level formatting tips you should keep in mind for your business analyst resume:

  • Keep it to one page. If it’s longer than a page, the hiring manager will likely only skim it.
  • Unless you’re customizing your business analyst resume summary, don’t include it on your resume. It’ll just take up space.
  • If you’re a senior business analyst, keep your education section really short. If you’re an entry-level business analyst, include relevant classes you took in school that make you qualified for the role.
  • Don’t get too creative with your formatting. Your resume needs to be machine-readable so don’t include any images or charts.
  • This can be your LinkedIn, Github, personal blog, publications, etc.. Anything that makes the case about your skills as a business analyst.

Since your goal is to keep your resume to one page, every inch of real estate is valuable. If you’re a senior business analyst this means you need to keep your education small to allow for more room to talk about your work experience.

Conversely, as an entry-level business analyst, you need to make the case that you’re qualified to be a BA without much (or any) work experience. To do that, you should include relevant math/statistics/economics/programming classes you took in school.

Business analyst education section: senior vs entry-level

  • Only include the essentials. Your school, the degree you earned, and your major.
  • You don’t need to include your GPA.
  • You need the essentials (school, degree, major)
  • Include relevant classes you took that make you qualified to be a BA
  • This can be classes in mathematics, statistics, economics, programming, business classes, etc.
  • Include your GPA if it’s above 3.2.

Business analyst resume summary or objective

Spoiler alert, most (90%+) of business analyst job applicants don’t need a resume objective or resume summary.

Why? The overwhelming majority of them are too long, too generic, or don’t provide any new information about a candidate’s qualifications for the BA role they’re applying for. Because of this, a lot of hiring managers have been conditioned to ignore this section (especially when it’s too long).

If you’re going to include a resume objective, make sure it actually adds value to your resume. Here are some ways you can do that:

  • Talk about why you’re specifically interested in working as a business analyst at the company you’re applying to.
  • Customize your resume objective for each job you apply to; this means carefully reading each of those  business analyst job descriptions !
  • Read what you’ve written. Is it just generic, meaningless buzzwords? If so, then it’s better not to include it.
  • Keep it to two lines or less. Longer than that, the hiring manager likely won’t read it.

Quantify your impact on your resume

The goal of a business analyst is to leverage data to make recommendations that have a demonstrable impact on a business or product. More than anything you need to make it clear on your resume that you have this capability.

How can you do that? By showing that you’ve done it in the past! You need to estimate the impact of the projects you’ve worked on.

One of the toughest challenges of being a business analyst is trying to quantify the seemingly unquantifiable. How can you estimate the potential revenue impact of a feature that hasn’t been launched? How can you estimate the impact of a pricing change on customer churn?

These are challenges that business analysts have to deal with in their day-to-day. By estimating the quantitative impact of your past work you’re clearly demonstrating you have a knack for logical, numerical reasoning that is essential to succeed as a business analyst.

The impact of your projects doesn’t just have to be stated in terms of revenue impact. Here are some other ways you can go about it.

Ways to quantify your work as a business analyst

  • Example: Leveraging Google Analytics and Excel identified a gap in the product funnel and made a recommendation that improved customer conversion rate by 10%
  • Example: Streamlined and automated a key business report in Tableau that saved the team 10 hours of reporting each week.
  • Example: Using SQL and Excel recommended that we end our contracts with our worst-performing vendors resulting in a cost savings of $100,000 annually.
  • Example: Built data visualizations in Excel to demonstrate the efficacy of our sales operations and marketing resulting in the close of a $1.3M Series A.
  • Example: Determined through analysis in Python that emailing customers who had been inactive for 7 days resulted in a retention improvement of 7 basis points.
  • Example: Using SQL and Excel, identified common complaints amongst new customers leading to changes that improved new customer satisfaction by 14%.

When it comes to demonstrating the impact of your work it’s important you focus on the most important metrics relevant for a given project. Being able to determine the success vs failure criteria of an experiment is pivotal to being a good business analyst.

Just to hammer the point home one last time I want you to compare these two work experiences. Now, this is the same business analyst talking about their experience in a certain role in two different ways.

Project ideas for entry-level business analysts

If you’re an entry-level business analyst, I know what you’re thinking: “Stephen, this whole section is focused on work experience but what if I don’t have work experience as a business analyst?” (P.S. I don’t actually know what you’re thinking, I just needed a decent segue)

The beauty of being a business analyst is that you don’t need work experience to demonstrate the skills needed to succeed in a full-time role!

Fundamentally a business analyst needs to ask a question, gather data to answer that question, and analyze the data to provide a convincing answer to that question.

You can do that on your own! Talking about a project you worked on to scratch your own itch demonstrates to a hiring manager that you have the desire and skills to succeed as a business analyst.

Get creative! Have you had a question you’ve long wondered about? Think of some data you can gather and do a write-up about your findings.

To get your creative juices flowing here are some questions I’ve thought a lot about and how I might go about answering them.

Sample business analyst projects for your resume

  • I would gather data around the value of each player on the roster in terms of their output over the last 10 years and the number of games they missed each season. I’d then compare this to other teams in the league and do a write-up.
  • I’d look at some of the most popular job boards for business analyst job descriptions. I’d manually gather attributes about each of the job descriptions and do a write-up.
  • Look at salary data and job descriptions of business analyst roles across the country. I’d control for confounding factors like years of experience and try to tease out what individual technical skill most correlated with a higher salary.
  • I’d look at the box office and public reviews of movies nominated for the “best picture” Oscar as far back as I can get reliable data and do an analysis trying to answer this question.
  • I would get public data around the top 200 ultra marathons each year going back as far as I can get data. I’d then compare the hometowns of top performers to see if accessibility to trails and good weather correlate with performance on race day.

How to Write a Great Business Analyst Resume

No matter if you’re a senior business analyst or an entry business analyst looking for your first role, the north star of your resume should be to  demonstrate to the hiring manager you’ll have a meaningful impact on their business!

  • Only include hard skills in your “skills” section. If you would not feel comfortable being interviewed about a given skill, don’t include it.
  • Keep your resume to one page and triple-check for spelling and grammar errors. More likely than not you should not include a resume objective or summary.
  • Demonstrate your numerical reasoning skills by quantifying the impact of your past work as a business analyst. If you’re looking for your first BA role, include projects you’ve worked on your resume.

It took me 66 applications before I landed my first business analyst role in 2010 . I know looking for a new job is generally miserable, so try to keep your head high.

If you want to win more interviews and offers, you need to make that time count. That starts with hitting the reader with the exact information they're looking for right at the top of your resume.

Unfortunately, traditional resume advice like Summaries and Objectives don't accomplish that goal. If you want to win in today's market, you need a modern approach. I like to use something I call a “Highlight Reel,” here's how it works.

Highlight Reels: A Proven Way To Start Your Resume And Win More Jobs

The Highlight Reel is exactly what it sounds like.

It's a section at the top of your resume that allows you to pick and choose the best and most relevant experience to feature right at the top of your resume.

It's essentially a highlight reel of your career as it relates to this specific role! I like to think about it as the SportsCenter Top 10 of your resume.

The Highlight Reel resume summary consists of 4 parts:

  • A relevant section title that ties your experience to the role
  • An introductory bullet that summarizes your experience and high-level value
  • A few supporting “Case Study” bullets that illustrate specific results, projects, and relevant experience
  • A closing “Extracurricular” bullet to round out your candidacy

For example, if we were writing a Highlight Reel for a Cyber Security Analyst role, it might look like this:

Unfortunately, way too many job seekers aren't good at this. They use fluffy, buzzword-filled language and they only talk about the actions that they took rather than the results and outcomes those actions created.

The Anatomy Of A Highly Effective Resume Bullet

If you apply this framework to each of the bullets on your resume, you're going to make them more compelling and your value is going to be crystal clear to the reader. For example, take a look at these resume bullets:

ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels dropped from DirecTV in contract dispute

Walt Disney Co.-owned channels, including ESPN and ABC stations, were knocked off DirecTV platforms Sunday after talks to reach a new distribution deal collapsed.

The blackout — which affects DirecTV’s nearly 11 million customer homes — hit before the kickoff of Sunday’s highly anticipated University of Southern California -Louisiana State University college football game and in the middle of ESPN’s coverage of the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York. The impasse came at the deadline for a new distribution deal after weeks of haggling between the two companies over contract terms and fees that Disney charges to carry its programming.

Without an agreement, DirecTV and its U-Verse service lost the rights to carry Disney channels.

“They want to continue to chase maximum profits and dominant control at the expense of consumers — making it harder for them to select the shows and sports they want at a reasonable price,” Rob Thun, chief content officer at DirecTV, said in a statement shortly after the channels went dark at 4 p.m. PST.

Sports fans will quickly feel the pinch. In addition to college football on ESPN and ABC, the new NFL season begins later this week. ESPN is set to start its season with a “Monday Night Football” game Sept. 9 between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets, in which Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is expected to return after suffering an injury a year ago.

Disney’s eight ABC stations, including KABC-TV Channel 7 in Los Angeles, are no longer available on DirecTV. That means viewers of local news and “Jeopardy,” “Wheel of Fortune,” “Good Morning America” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will be without some of their favorite shows. Customers in Fresno, San Francisco, Chicago and New York also lost access to their local ABC station.

Other Disney-owned channels, including Freeform, FX and National Geographic , are included in the outage.

“While we’re open to offering DirecTV flexibility and terms which we’ve extended to other distributors, we will not enter into an agreement that undervalues our portfolio of television channels and programs,” read a statement from Disney Entertainment heads Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. “We urge DirecTV to do what’s in the best interest of their customers and finalize a deal that would immediately restore our programming.”

It’s not clear how long the blackout will last. A year ago, a similar tussle between Disney and Charter Communications , which operates the Spectrum TV service, resulted in a 12-day blackout of Disney channels .

The shift to streaming and resulting cord-cutting has devastated pay-TV companies . DirecTV has lost more than half of its subscribers in the last decade. The El Segundo company now has about 11 million subscribers, according to industry estimates.

This year marked the worse-ever industry drop in pay-TV subscribers, according to the MoffettNathanson financial research firm. During the first quarter, the industry lost nearly 2.4 million pay-TV homes in the U.S. — a 12% year-over-year decline, the firm said in a recent report.

The Burbank entertainment company has long relied on billions of dollars in programming fees that it receives annually from DirecTV and other providers. The fees are calculated, in part, by the number of subscribers that receive the channels.

In addition, Disney’s ESPN has historically been the most expensive basic cable channel, costing distributors nearly $10 per month per subscriber home. Disney has sought to maintain those premiums to help pay for its pricey sports rights contracts, including long-term NFL and NBA deals.

There are actually things to talk about in Hollywood other than the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes — such as the Disney-Charter deal to end the blackout.

The challenges set the stage for contentious contract talks at DirecTV’s El Segundo headquarters.

The environment has changed dramatically since the last time the two companies hammered out an accord. That was in 2019 when DirecTV was wholly owned by AT&T. Since then, the phone giant has spun its television distribution group into a separate entity and taken on a private equity partner, TPG, to manage the business.

For the past year, DirecTV executives have been working on plans to increase its offerings to consumers.

DirecTV wants to offer genre-themed packages — think sports or general entertainment — to provide cheaper plans for customers who refuse to pay $100 or more each month for a traditional bundle with more than 100 television channels. Executives want to appeal to customers who have long pined for a way to sign up for only the channels they actually watch.

But, according to DirecTV, existing contracts with programmers prevent it from widely offering customers curated packages.

“Instead of allowing distributors like DirecTV to also develop smaller, more tailored packages at prices that reflect the value they get from the content, programmers have continued to impose and enforce strict bundling requirements,” DirecTV said in a position paper in late August.

The expiration of the 2019 distribution deal with Disney has given DirecTV an opening to try to change contract terms.

The satellite TV company said it has asked Disney to ease a key distribution requirement — minimum penetration rates. For example, Disney’s deals require that DirecTV and other distributors provide ESPN to a minimum of nearly 80% of its customer base.

DirecTV maintains that such “antiquated” penetration rates “force pay TV customers to subscribe to many channels they may not watch,” and the contracts limit DirecTV’s ability to offer smaller and less-expensive packages. During the negotiations, Disney said it offered DirecTV with more flexibility to tailor “skinny” genre-themed packages that it wanted for its customers.

The Burbank company also agreed to work with DirecTV on the minimum penetration rates, Thun said.

“But not enough to really change the game for us,” Thun said in an interview. “We moved much further than they have [during the negotiations], and what they put on the table in terms of skinny bundles was not the total amount that we had asked for.”

Making a wholesale switch could reduce revenue flowing to Disney at a critical time.

Disney’s stock has been under pressure amid softness at its theme parks and resorts and shares have been trading near five-year lows. On Friday, Disney closed up nearly 1% to $90.38.

Last year’s outage of ESPN and other Disney channels on Charter’s Spectrum ended with an agreement that saw several smaller Disney channels, including Freeform and Disney Jr., dropped from Spectrum’s lineup.

In the end, both companies said they came away with a win.

Charter didn’t force the issue of penetration rates. Instead, Disney and Charter agreed to widen the reach of the Burbank company’s streaming services, including Disney+ into Spectrum homes.

Disney executives had been hoping last year’s Charter agreement can provide a template for a pact with DirecTV.

In the end, the weekend talks broke down over economics, executives said.

“We continue to invest in really high-quality content — scripted entertainment, ABC News and sports rights,” Justin Connolly, Disney’s president of platform distribution, said in an interview last week.” All of those things continue to increase in cost for us and ... the rates that we are asking for are in-line with what we have with other providers in the marketplace.”
