Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Fellowship for Women in Graduate Study

This Fellowship – co-sponsored by the University and the Monticello College Foundation – is especially created to encourage more women to take up graduate study, and serve society afterwards.

The successful recipients will receive an annual stipend worth US$36,720 and a US$600 travel award besides full tuition remission throughout their programme.

PhD Scholarship 6: University of Minnesota Twin Cities

A stipend of US$40,000 for 12 months, tuition and required fees, an allowance for student medical insurance, and US$2,000 for miscellaneous expenses make up this generous funding package; the deadline is Jan. 24, 2022.

PhD Scholarship 8: University of Oregon

As a Tier-One National Public Research University and being the top public university in Oregon (for first-year retention and graduation rates), the University of Oregon attracts over 22,000 students. It has nine schools and colleges. 

The International Cultural Service Programme is an annual tuition waiver scholarship ranging from US$9,000 to US$35,000 for up to 15 credits per term. Winners are required to do cultural service in the form of presentations about their home country to children, community organisations and the university’s students and faculty.

PhD Scholarships 9 and 10: East-West Centre

The East-West Centre , established by the US Congress in 1960, is a nonprofit organisation acting as a US-based institution for public diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific region. Located adjacent to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), the centre’s Honolulu campus spans 21 acres.

At Yale, you can earn your doctorate at our expense. 

Our funding packages for Yale PhD students are among the most generous in the world. Every PhD student receives a fellowship for the full cost of tuition, a stipend for living expenses, and paid health coverage, though the details of your funding package will differ depending on your academic program. On average, doctoral students receive more than $500,000 in tuition fellowships, stipends, and health premium benefits over the course of their enrollment. Full PhD funding normally extends for a minimum of five years, unless your doctoral program is of shorter duration, e.g., Investigative Medicine, Law, Nursing, and Public Health. 

The main categories of funding available to PhD students are detailed below. Our Programs & Policies handbook contains additional information about funding and fellowship opportunities available at the Graduate School, along with applicable policies. 

If you have questions about your funding, you can ask your program registrar or DGS, Graduate Financial Aid, or Associate Dean Robert Harper-Mangels.

Types of Funding for PhD Students

University Fellowships (UFs) are provided through the Graduate School and do not require teaching in Yale's Teaching Fellow Program. UFs are often used during the initial year(s) of your doctoral program to cover your stipend and tuition, when you are engaged in coursework and identifying an adviser.

In subsequent years and in most programs, your stipend will be funded by a teaching fellowship or a research assistantship.

Teaching Fellowships (TFs) are contingent on teaching Yale's Teaching Fellow Program (TFP). While you are on a TF, a portion of your stipend is compensation for teaching. The rest of your stipend will come from other sources, depending on your department or program. See the Teaching Fellow Funding page for more information.

The teaching portion of your stipend is subject to federal tax withholding, so you will notice a difference in your paycheck in teaching versus non-teaching semesters.

In lieu of teaching in the Teaching Fellow Program, PhD students in the humanities and social sciences may choose to undertake one of the available Professional Development Opportunities . These positions allow you to gain professional experience at a library, museum, or other office on campus relevant to your studies. 

If you are in the natural sciences, your funding will likely come from training grants and faculty research grants at some point during your enrollment. In most programs, you may only join a research group that has active grant funding. Please consult with your DGS, if you have questions about this aspect of your funding package.

We strongly encourage you to compete for external fellowships. Winning an external award in a national competition, whether sponsored by a public or private agency, is a significant honor. External fellowships may be subject to our Combined Award policy. Please be sure to review our External Fellowships & Awards page to understand how external awards interact with university funding.

An external fellowship may also offer you added flexibility in your program. 

• If you are a student in the natural sciences, an external fellowship may allow you to pursue a project or idea that is otherwise not eligible for financial support through your adviser’s research funding. 
• If you are a student in the humanities or social sciences, an external fellowship might allow you to defer a University Fellowship (UF) to a subsequent term or year.

You must notify the Graduate School of any external awards you receive.

Health Award

The Graduate School provides Yale Health Basic Coverage at no cost to all students (Master's and PhD) who are enrolled at least half-time in degree-seeking programs. In addition, all PhD students registered at least half-time receive a Health Fellowship Award that covers the cost of Yale Health Hospitalization/Specialty Care Coverage.

Dean's Emergency Fund

The Dean’s Emergency Fund enables terminal master’s and PhD students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to continue making academic progress despite unanticipated, extreme financial hardships that cannot be resolved through fellowships, loans, or personal resources. The maximum award for eligible requests is $2,000.

Funding & Scholarship: Graduate Programs

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,004 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the classes entering in Fall 2024 and beyond : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the  National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program  and  National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) . 

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies.  Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding.   In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

Currently, PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive.  PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship.  PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000.  The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided.This policy is subject to review and change.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for independent grants and fellowships to fund their studies.  Information about tuition and fees can be found here . How to search for USA PhD Studentships?

findaphd.com is an excellent website to search for PhD studentships (PhD funding on specific projects) in the UK. Also, UK universities often advertise PhD studentship opportunities in their "job vacancies" section. However, after much googling, I have yet to find similar sites or departmental advertisements for PhD studentships in the USA.

I don't suppose there is a similar site for the USA that I missed during my search?

Are there even off-cycle PhD studentships for specific projects in the USA, like those in the UK?

There is no such site because it is unnecessary. In Europe, a Ph.D. student is like an employee and is admitted to work on a specific project. In the USA, a Ph.D. student is admitted in a manner similar to an undergraduate (based on general considerations) and is not necessarily attached to a particular project or even a particular advisor.

Hence, you could say that every US department has a number of studentships available each year, always at the same time (start of fall semester) and you apply for all of them simply by submitting an admission application to the program.

Disclaimer: there are probably exceptions, but what I've written applies 99% of the time.

One additional note: I disagree with the comment below that claims that individual faculty do not decide which students are admitted. In every program I know, a small committee of program faculty makes all the decisions. If some faculty member (whether on the committee or not) really wants a particular applicant, that applicant will be admitted. My own admission came on the same day that I contacted a faculty member (and as a direct result). Of course, you should always follow this good advice when contacting faculty you'd like to work with.

The closest that you can come to this in the US is listings of graduate fellowships , which is more closely related to the issue of funding rather than admissions. Pretty much every department has an annual cycle for admitting students, as David mentions.

However, funding models vary widely, so acquisition of an external fellowship can make a significant difference in the kinds of projects one can take (since positions tend to be closely tied to specific projects, as a result of the grant model in the US).

• Plan to return to your home country after completion of your studies in the United States. 
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale (B). 
• Have completed at least two years of college-level coursework toward your degree before beginning graduate studies. 
• Demonstrate strong potential for a career in research related to human origins and evolution.*  

The fellowship includes: 

• $15,000 (INR 11.15 Lakhs) annual stipend for up to three years.

The International Student Research Fellowships are open for international students to pursue research with the help of a $43,000 (INR 31.98 Lakhs) grant. The fellowship is supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. You can apply for this fellowship if you are studying in an accredited American institution and willing to work on projects in biomedical sciences.

Nominees must demonstrate exceptional talent and innovation in research for the biomedical sciences.

To be eligible for an HHMI International Student Research Fellowship (ISRF), you must:

• Be a citizen or permanent resident of a country other than the United States;
• Be entering your third, fourth, or fifth year as a full-time student at an accredited American institution where you are pursuing your doctoral degree;
• Demonstrate exceptional talent and innovation in research for the biomedical sciences.

The Karman Fellowship offers $22,000 (INR 16.36 Lakhs) annually to eight graduate students who are pursuing a PhD at an accredited university in the United States. International learners without US citizenship are welcome to apply. Special consideration is given to PhD students in the humanities.

Applications must include Letters of Recommendation , publications, several chapters of dissertation research, and transcripts .

The Karman Fellowship Trust provides financial support to students who will be entering their final year of study or who have recently graduated. The awards are granted on a competitive basis; only outstanding candidates are accepted into the program. Research fellowships are awarded for studies in science , engineering and mathematics in the United States and Canada by the National Academy of Sciences on behalf of The Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust.

The National Council on International Trade Development offers $1,000 (INR 83,146 lakhs) scholarships to students pursuing non-US master’s or PhDs in areas related to international trade, political science , international affairs, international business , economics or law .

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must carry a minimum GPA of 3.0 and submit two letters of recommendation. They must also write a 2,500-word personal narrative about how they plan to make a positive impact on international trade in the future. All entries will be judged based on academic performance, career goals and contributions to the field of international trade.

Offering a stipend of $4,500 (INR 3.74 Lakhs) per month, the Campbell Fellowships for Transformative Research are awarded through the School of Advanced Research (SAR) for international female PhD scholars who are researching the circumstances of women in global developing nations. 

Scholarships are available to international female graduate students. Applicants must be fluent in English and enrolled at a US university.

Requirements:

• Be enrolled in a doctoral program at the time of application and during the tenure of the fellowship
• Have completed the equivalent of a US master’s degree or its equivalent by the start of her fellowship
• Be proficient in English and have an excellent command of written English
• Have demonstrated experience or potential for conducting research on women’s issues in global developing countries

The IBM PhD Fellowship Awards Program is an intensely competitive program attracting exceptional doctoral students worldwide who wish to study, intern, or conduct research in the United States. PhD students must have an interest in computer science, electrical engineering , cyber security, mobile computing , data analytics , social technologies, or material sciences. For consideration, candidates must have completed at least one year of their PhD program, reside in any nation except US embargoed countries, and meet visa requirements.

The awards are full scholarships in the USA for the recipient to pursue their PhD degree. Application Requirements for International Students

When applying, you need to carefully review the requirements for submitting all of your transcripts and student records. These include all post-secondary educational institutions you have attended, including technical and professional schools.

There is not a limit on the number of international students who will be accepted into the Doctoral Programs each year. Acceptance is based on academic history, test results, recommendations, and personal statement.

Language Proficiency

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required if you are an international applicant whose native language is not English. Please carefully review all the requirements for the exam explained in Standardized Test Scores .

International students who are accepted into the program and whose first language is not English may be required to take the SPEAK test offered through the English Language Programs office.

This test is used to determine/confirm a student’s fluency in English. If test results indicate a student would benefit from additional language instruction, arrangements will be made for summer class work and tutoring. Students will be expected to complete this additional work to ensure their proficiency in written and spoken English in professional settings.

Immigration and Taxes

In order to maintain legal student status in the United States, international PhD students must be enrolled for a full-time course load, which means a minimum of three courses per semester. Full-time enrollment does not include audits or incompletes. Degrees and GPA Requirements

Bachelors degree: All graduate applicants must hold an earned baccalaureate from a regionally accredited college or university or the recognized equivalent from an international institution.

Masters degree: This program requires a masters degree as well as the baccalaureate.

University GPA requirement: The minimum grade point average for admission consideration for graduate study at the University of Denver must meet one of the following criteria:

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the baccalaureate degree.

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits (approximately two years of work) for the baccalaureate degree.

An earned master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution or the recognized equivalent from an international institution supersedes the minimum GPA requirement for the baccalaureate.

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate coursework completed for applicants who have not earned a master’s degree or higher.

Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced or Duolingo English Test are required of all graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, whose native language is not English or who have been educated in countries where English is not the native language. Your TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.

The minimum TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test score requirements for this degree program are:

We require a scanned copy of your transcripts from every college or university you have attended. Scanned copies must be clearly legible and sized to print on standard 8½-by-11-inch paper. Transcripts that do not show degrees awarded must also be accompanied by a scanned copy of the diploma or degree certificate. If your academic transcripts were issued in a language other than English, both the original documents and certified English translations are required.

Transcripts and proof of degree documents for postsecondary degrees earned from institutions outside of the United States will be released to a third-party international credential evaluator to assess U.S. education system equivalencies. Beginning July 2023, a non-refundable fee for this service will be required before the application is processed.

Upon admission to the University of Denver, official transcripts will be required from each institution attended.

Three (3) letters of recommendation are required.  Letters should be submitted by recommenders through the online application.

PhD student accused of killing friend's baby faces death penalty if convicted

Pittsburgh prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case of a woman accused of killing a 6-week-old baby and injuring his twin brother in June, a new court filing shows.

Nicole Virzi, 30, a PhD student, was charged with homicide and multiple counts of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. The charges stem from an incident in June when Virzi was babysitting the twin boys of a couple she knew in Pittsburgh.

According to a criminal complaint, Virzi called the police on the night of June 15, claiming that one of the twins had fallen from a bassinet. The baby, named Leon Katz, was rushed to a nearby children's hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The next evening, Virzi discovered injuries to Leon’s twin brother, including scratches, bruising and swelling. After the second baby was taken to the hospital, doctors found the injuries sustained by both twins were neither natural nor accidental.

An examination by the medical examiner's office revealed that Leon had suffered from a severe skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds, with the cause of death determined to be blunt force trauma to the head, resulting from homicide.

Virzi, who had been staying at an Airbnb property in Pittsburgh, told police that Leon was in a bouncer seat when she left the room to get him a bottle. She then heard the baby screaming and found him on the floor before she contacted police. Virzi also alleged that Leon's twin brother got a scratch to his face when she tried to put him in a car seat and he flailed his arms.

The twins' parents denied inflicting any injuries on their children.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office cited torture as one of the aggravating factors justifying its pursuit of the death penalty.

Virzi’s defense attorney, David Shrager, told NBC News that Virzi was close friends with the twin’s parents and maintains her innocence.

“This was not the direction we hoped the case would go,” Shrager said. “We strongly disagree with the allegations made by the DA’s office regarding the death penalty. We will of course be litigating this case aggressively until the truth comes out.”

Virzi was pursuing her doctorate at the University of California, San Diego. According to the university's website , she was studying behavioral medicine in the joint doctoral program in clinical psychology.

She is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bond.

Pennsylvania is one of 27 states where the death penalty remains legal. Over 100 people remain on death row in the state — including just one woman — but no executions have been carried out since 1999.

When Gov. Josh Shapiro took office last year, he a nnounced that he would not issue any execution warrants during his term. He called on the General Assembly to abolish the death penalty, saying, "The Commonwealth shouldn't be in the business of putting people to death."

PhD Studentship - Inverse Simulation: Going From Camera Observations of a Deformation to Material Properties Using a New Theoretical Approach

Project description

This PhD is focussed on a new theoretical/computational method to measure material properties in places where they are really difficult to measure: e.g. in a shock wave, in a shear band, or at a crack tip. These are all of critical importance in many engineering problems such as car crashes, manufacturing processes, or geotechnical slope stability – but it remains an ongoing technical challenge. Once the material behaviour in these settings is understood, we can conduct far more accurate simulations, such as finite element simulations, enabling a new generation of engineering design and prototyping.

Cameras and 3D x-ray imaging have enabled huge amounts of data to be obtained even from simple experiments. We want to develop a new method to obtain the material stress-strain behaviour from the observed deformation field, essentially the reverse of the finite element method which obtains the deformation from the material behaviour.

Your PhD will be focussed on in depth theoretical/computational development of the method, however, there will also be some experimental design and implementation to obtain data. As the PhD is very interdisciplinary, you will learn different computational procedures, solid mechanics, partial differential equations, machine learning, and experimental design, and you will become familiar with a lot of different experimental equipment. Later on in your PhD, depending on your interest, you will have the opportunity to go deeper into something that you’re interested in, such as machine learning, high speed imaging, or one specific material/application. This is an ideal PhD project for someone who wants to become familiar with a range of things rather than being narrowly focussed on one specific area. Ideally, you would have a strong interest several of the following subjects: vector calculus, partial differential equations, linear algebra, and numerical methods, coding, and/or solid mechanics.

The basic idea of the method you will be working on is as follows. The deformation is recorded using a camera (dots are spray painted so the position and strain field can be determined using digital image correlation (DIC)). A system of partial differential equations are solved to obtain the stress using the finite volume method (similar to the finite element method). Then once we have the stress and strain, we can directly calculate material properties. For the example of a necking tensile specimen, one can determine the stress-strain behaviour right inside the neck at strains at 100%, compared to ~10% using conventional methods.

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

PhD student, 29, who 'tortured friend's baby to death' while babysitting twins could be executed

Prosecutors are pushing for the death penalty against Nicole Virzi, a PhD student accused of the brutal murder of her friend's six-week-old baby, Leon Katz, while babysitting, and causing harm to his twin brother. The Alleghany District Attorney's Office announced on Friday their intention to seek capital punishment for the 30-year-old following the tragic incident at the infant's Pittsburgh home in June.

Virzi allegedly caused fatal injuries to Leon's skull, leading to multiple brain bleeds. During the time she was supposed to be caring for baby Leon, his parents, Ethan Katz and Savannah Roberts, were dealing with another crisis as they took his twin brother Ari to the hospital for injuries now also attributed to Virzi.

The prosecution's case is built around the claim that Virzi tortured Leon to death, stating: "The defendant committed the killing while in the perpetration of a felony. The offence was committed by means of torture. The defendant has a significant history of felony convictions involving the use or threat of violence to the person. The victim was a child under 12 years of age."

While on a break from her studies, the infants' parents considered Virzi a "trusted friend" and had been left in charge of the children. The situation turned dire while the parents were away at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh with Ari, who had sustained an injury to his groin area, which police say was noticed by Virzi, reports the Mirror US .

She claimed she had popped into the kitchen to make a bottle for the baby when she heard screams. Rushing back, she discovered the infant had tumbled from his bouncer chair and immediately rang 911.

However, a doctor told investigators that "The injuries sustained by both (twins are) consistent with having been sustained as a result of child abuse, as these are inflicted injuries that are not natural and not accidental," according to court papers.

David Shrager, Virzi's lawyer, said last month his client was heartbroken over Leon's death but insisted on her innocence.

"If there was something that she would want to convey, it would just be the absolutely horrible pain that she's feeling," Mr. Shrager said. "These were her close friends."

Despite pleading not guilty, Virzi is up against charges of homicide, child endangerment, and aggravated assault.

A GoFundMe created for the grieving parents describes how Leon was "tragically killed under horrific circumstances" and that a "trusted family friend" has been taken into custody.

The fundraising page shares, "Leon will always be remembered as a happy, smiley, goofy baby boy. His untimely and tragic death has deeply impacted the Pittsburgh community".
