Accounting (PhD)

Program description.

The Stern School of Business of New York University offers one of the finest PhD programs in accounting in the world. The curriculum is designed to provide a thorough understanding of current accounting theory, practice and research, taught within the framework of modern economic and finance theories as applied to the behavior of today’s corporations and financial markets. Our PhD students take extensive coursework in economics, finance, econometrics and statistics in addition to accounting. Students are entitled to take courses at Stern as well as other schools within the University such as the Arts and Sciences Graduate School of Economics and NYU’s famous Courant Institute of Mathematics. Our objective is to prepare students for faculty positions as researchers and teachers in top academic institutions.

Stern’s accounting faculty has a wide range of research interests and continuously publishes works in all major academic accounting research journals such as the Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Accounting Review, the Review of Accounting Studies, and Contemporary Accounting Research. Furthermore, Stern’s accounting faculty has published in such major Finance journals as the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.

The Department boasts a large and diverse body of PhD students, who assist faculty with research projects early on in their doctoral program and often become co-authors to papers published in prestigious accounting journals.

The quality of our PhD program (ranked 7th in the United States by U.S. News and World Report) manifests itself by, among other things, our success in placing our graduates.

All applicants to the NYU Stern School of Business PhD Program are required to submit a complete application for admission. A complete application includes the  online application ,  statement of purpose ,  optional essay ,  educational history and resume or CV ,  letters of recommendation ,  test scores ,  academic transcripts , and an  application fee .

Curriculum Details

Although every doctoral student must satisfy general requirements, each student designs and completes an individual program of study.

Each new doctoral student begins a program of study, which requires approval from the Area Coordinator and the Doctoral Office. Any unusual features or revisions of an approved program of study requires permission from both the department Area Coordinator and the Doctoral Office. Unless specifically approved in advance by the Area Coordinator and the Doctoral Office, MBA courses will not be eligible for tuition remission.

The general PhD degree requirement for students entering the program with a Master’s degree or equivalent is to successfully complete a minimum of 36 credits. The requirement for students entering the program with only a Bachelor’s degree is to successfully complete a minimum of 54 credits. If the Doctoral Office and the department Area Coordinator approve, a program of study may include previous graduate work at NYU or other universities. In all cases, students must complete at least 33 credits of coursework at NYU.

An approved program of study becomes part of the student’s permanent academic file and represents a formal commitment by both the student and the school. Any approved program can be modified as appropriate.

A complete program of study must include:

  • Prerequisites: Every student must satisfy the prerequisites in calculus, linear algebra, basic probability and statistics, and economics before starting doctoral study. This can be accomplished by taking courses in these subjects for a grade.
  • Basic Research Skills Methodology Courses: Every student must complete four research methodology courses, including three courses in probability and statistics, and one course in microeconomics.
  • Major Specialization & Elective Courses: Every student must complete the prescribed program of courses in their major specialization, as well as elective courses.

Public Finance and Financial Management - PhD

This field is concerned with the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of policies and procedures surrounding the use of resources and raising of revenues by public and non-profit entities. The primary emphasis is on nonprofit and healthcare organizations, and state and local governmental bodies, although some attention is given to the federal government and international settings as well.

Microeconomics is the most important disciplinary background for the field. Principles of efficient resource allocation as well as equity in outcome are used to analyze both the internal operations of organizations and their external environment. In other words, the study of: (1) financial management (internal to the organization), and (2) public finance (external to the organization) are combined. Common methodologies used to study finance issues are multivariate statistical analysis, techniques of managerial accounting, and finance and case studies. Students in the public finance and financial management field must complete the modules in microeconomic analysis and in applied statistics and econometrics.

Research in the areas of public finance and financial management often requires depth of knowledge in a specific area, such as education finance, financial management of nonprofit organizations, or tax policy. Such depth of knowledge involves both a foundation gained from coursework, as well as significant study of literature beyond the material covered in coursework.

Financial Engineering, M.S.

Financial Engineering

Sophisticated modeling and information technology now dominate the financial world. The theories and the practice of Finance are challenged today by complex financial and global systems and by dynamically changing regulatory environments and politics. A global world in transition creates both opportunities and challenges for financial engineers to adapt theoretical and financial constructs into profitable and innovative opportunities by creating innovative, custom-designed instruments in the marketplace.

At the NYU School of Engineering, we train our students to do exactly that: to engineer the future of finance and transform financial theory into practice. The MS in Financial Engineering program furnishes students with foundational knowledge in financial concepts. This knowledge then becomes a springboard to specialized fields where students can apply concepts to everything from derivatives risk finance to financial IT and algorithmic trading on Big Data.

About the Program

The Department receives a large number of applications every year. To be considered for admission into the MS in Financial Engineering program, students must have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and proven proficiency in:

  • Linear Algebra
  • Probability Theory
  • Multivariable Calculus (Advanced)
  • Applied Statistics
  • Computer Programming

Admission Requirements

  • Official Transcripts
  • Statement of Purpose
  • 1-minute video
  • 2 Letters Of Recommendation
  • English Language Proficiency Testing, where applicable
  • Online application
  • $90 application fee

Learn more about Admission Requirements .

The average Quant GRE score of accepted students in Fall 2023 was 169.0/170, the Verbal GRE score was 158.3, and the GPA was 3.848.*

*Beginning in 2023, the GRE is optional and not required to be admitted to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

When applicable, applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency to be determined by the TOEFL score.

The FRE department does not accept change-of-major requests. In all instances, students must formally apply to the program. Applicants must have demonstrated proficiency in the mathematical areas listed to be considered for admission. The Department offers both an online and an on-campus boot camp during the summer before formal coursework starts.  For program highlights and a video regarding further details on FRE admissions requirements, visit our  Prospective Students  page.

Undergraduate students are not allowed to take courses in the MS in Financial Engineering program, except for those in a combined BS/MS program.

Ph.D. Program in Marketing

The Marketing Department at New York University's Stern School of Business offers a doctoral program that is widely recognized for the great success of its graduates. It has a large and distinguished faculty working in a diverse set of research areas from both behavioral and quantitative perspectives. Stern's Marketing Ph.D. program is extremely selective and, once accepted, students benefit from the faculty's dedication to ensuring a positive and productive doctoral experience. The department fosters a nurturing environment with close collaboration between doctoral students and faculty members. By the time students graduate, most have published in leading journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research or Marketing Science. For example, 25% of our faculty publications in the last three years have been with doctoral students, past and present. Although the primary focus of the program is the development of top researchers, Stern doctoral students also receive extensive training for teaching and begin their first academic appointments well prepared for the classroom. The fact that we have one of the top-rated Ph.D. programs in the country is also evidenced by our placements of our doctoral students as faculty at top business schools (e.g., Harvard, Berkeley, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Florida, Michigan). The tenure, publication, and teaching records of our doctoral students are outstanding. All of these activities give Stern Marketing an important role in mentoring the future leaders of our field.
