It gives me immense pleasure to address you all on the auspicious occasion of our Institution’s 10th Alumni Meet. A day like today is very important for us, as it provides us the opportunity to meet with many of our graduate students after a long time as well as provides them a chance to meet each other, their former teachers and other staff members. It also enables the alumni to notice the changes & developments happened in the college campus then and now.

FGH, Noida , has a long established tradition to stay in touch with their students, continuing this tradition, FGH group of Colleges has organised an Alumni Meet at Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi this day.

Kindly allow me to express my gratitude towards each & everyone of you present here for sparing sometime to be with all of us tonight. We know that it takes a lot to take some time out of your busy schedule and come over. But, I believe that the experiences of this evening which you will take home will be worth the time you all have spared.

A decade ago, our college was a small & struggling organisation. And, if we talk about today, our graduates have widely-spread throughout the globe in search for growth, learning, knowledge and their performances make difference everywhere. Many of you are still on my mind showcasing your excellence and outstanding performance.

I believe that our college has now become one of the great institutions of the city, which was ranked number ‘2’ by the Noida Education Department. And to achieve greatness, it has all the important prerequisites such as an expansive campus, conducive environment for all-round growth, experienced faculty, dedicated students, necessary financial resources, etc.

Lastly, I would like to praise the multiple roles played by you in the society. Many of you hold the key positions of major influence in the society; I would like to appreciate your efforts being done for the development of our society and justifying the years spent by you at this esteemed institution. Last but not the least; I would like to thank all of you for your keen participation as well as the support you have always extended towards your alma mater.

I feel deeply honoured standing here today as well as very nostalgic at getting the privilege of welcoming you all here. It’s been so many years, I still remember my first batch in 2005, your faces are still so fresh, dear children, a very warm welcome to all of you to this Alumni Meet of your school.

I appreciate this idea of Alumni Meet, which creates a special bonding between the students who have passed out & who have established themselves already in the big, outside world. I believe an Alumni Meet is a perfect platform for you all to meet your peers and teachers and revive the contacts.

The school began many years ago as a primary school but in 2006, it got successfully upgraded to +2 levels. The requirements were quite immediate; they were genuinely felt by the population of the city and the neighbouring areas. At that time he didn’t know that he was giving a major uplift to the education facilities in the region. In 2006, we started with the best faculty, experts and support staff, and I feel proud to say that over the years, we have scaled further heights of success and glory, earning a credible name in the education field.

Our past results have shown that our academic graph has been steadily going up. We have embarked on a mission to empower all sections of society with the light of knowledge. Our concern has wide parameters such as making our students good citizens at the level of city, state, nation, in fact, the entire globe. Our concern is whether we as teachers are able to create the qualities in you of respect, empathy, love, tolerance, honesty and above all, humanity.

Abc School has always set for itself higher goals to attain, the management especially Chairman Sir, Principal Madam, and Vice-Principal Madam and all other teachers including me are striving to attain perfection and it’s a long process. This meeting organised today is for us to get together, think & show our concern & for you to give your true opinion about when and where did we faulted & where all we achieved excellence.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s the time to rewind your school days, when this school started nurturing you, gradually and slowly with delicate care & love. For some of you, who started here as kids, this was the place which bloomed you out of your saplings and strengthened your adolescence, I bet you remember your first day in school when you entered with tearful eyes bidding a farewell to your mother for the day, but the compassionate, bright, and cheerful smiles of your teachers with open arms, wiped your tears & warmly welcomed you to new beginnings, introducing your classmates who replaced the comfort zones of your sweet homes and that eternal connection of belongingness is today proved by your priceless presence here.

Time went on & schooling became one of the best experiences, be it the mouth watering canteen food or the not so cold “cold drink”, what an excitement do those memories bring to you. When our college began, it began with a struggling phase due to lot of competition in the city, but gradually when our institution appointed some of the most experienced faculties, our college made its place in the Top 5 Colleges of the State & you all will be glad to know that our college is now ranked as 1 st in the city & has got many awards for the back to back outstanding performances in the university exams by the students.

The benchmark set by the graduates like you is itself a proof that our institution’s graph has been steadily going up. But, we are not limited to this; our commitment is something deeper and more pervasive, which requires a lot of introspection. Our involvement has wide parameters as to whether our students grow up into good citizens or not at the level of city, state, nation or the entire world. Thank you all so much that you are here together to spend some time today. We know you must have found it difficult to take some time out from your busy schedule to come here but I believe that the moments you will take home from this evening will be invaluable.

A decade ago our college was a small and struggling organization and if we talk about it today then our graduate students are widely spread all over the world because of their development, education, knowledge and their performance which is different everywhere. Make a point. The excellent performance of many of you is still etched in my mind.

I believe that our college has now become one of the great institutions of the city which is ranked No. 2 in the ranking given by the Noida Education Department. We started in 2006 with few experts and support staff and I think over the years we have made a credible name in the field of education by scaling the heights of success and glory.

Our past results have shown that our academic profile is growing steadily. We have started work on a mission to empower all sections of the society with the light of knowledge. Our concern has broad parameters like making our students good citizens at the level of city, state, nation really all over the world. We never leave any stone unturned in fulfilling the responsibilities of a good teacher and always motivate you to perform better whether it is studies, sports or any other field activity. How to write a welcome speech in 3 steps

So, you've been asked to give a short welcome speech for an event. Congratulations! And now you want to be doubly sure you get it right. The right content. The right tone. Plus, the right length!

You'll find everything here you need to do that easily, from start to finish.

The welcome speech template

To be effective your welcome speech needs to meet expected, as well as any specific, requirements dictated by the occasion.

The 6 standard welcome speech content ingredients

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

• Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
• Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
• An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
• Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
• An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
• Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

Short sample welcome speech for a conference 

Now let's put all six ingredients into an example of a short welcome speech to open a conference that you can adapt for your own speech.

* (This speech is pure fiction! I made it up to show you how it's done. You'll see its tone is formal rather than informal to fit the occasion. I don't think there is a group called Parents United. "Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, good morning!

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

Parents United is committed to actively raising the quality of life for every child. We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential. Our task is to make it possible. Our mission is to provide practical, step by step assistance.

This year our theme is literacy. We've named the day 'Readers by Right'.

Thanks to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are aware of 'rights' in many spheres, including education.  Article 26 declared it should be compulsory and free for children.

That goal is as pertinent today as it was then. And it's a goal I know we all share - the full development of every child. As a body, Parents United recognizes good reading skills established in childhood as the foundation of fulfilling, and ongoing education.

We are honored to have Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith and Jane Brown with us today. All three are esteemed specialists in teaching young children to read.

Sue-Ellen has worked for a long time with educational authorities to establish programs putting in place necessary pre-reading skills. Her hard work needs no introduction. The results speak for themselves.

Jim and Jane bring their passion, and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed. Their work among disadvantaged English-as-a-second-language families has bridged gaps that were deep dark chasms.

Writing your welcome speech

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

• ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
• double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .) 

Use the S-S-S formula for success: Short, Simple and Sincere. Your listeners will appreciate it.

If you're stuck for words, here's a large selection of  adaptable welcoming phrases with example s entences.  Reading through them could help you to find exactly what you want.

What does a good welcome speech do?

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

• signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
• sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate.  However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful.  Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.  
• unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

Getting the tone right for an event

What is tone.

Tone is the combined impact of the words chosen to express something, with how they are structured and, delivered.  All three elements come together to create tone * . 

Get tone wrong, and your welcome speech is a disaster.

Get it right, and it's a triumph!

(Yes, that's hyperbole but I'm sure you get the idea. ☺)

* Tone - a mood, quality or feeling

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together.  It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated." 

What is appropriate? What is expected?  Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

Good Evening to One & All Present Here…

It gives me immense pleasure to address you all on the auspicious occasion of our Institution’s 10th Alumni Meet. A day like today is very important for us, as it provides us the opportunity to meet with many of our graduate students after a long time as well as provides them a chance to meet each other, their former teachers and other staff members. It also enables the alumni to notice the changes & developments happened in the college campus then and now.

FGH, Noida , has a long established tradition to stay in touch with their students, continuing this tradition, FGH group of Colleges has organised an Alumni Meet at Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi this day.

Kindly allow me to express my gratitude towards each & everyone of you present here for sparing sometime to be with all of us tonight. We know that it takes a lot to take some time out of your busy schedule and come over. But, I believe that the experiences of this evening which you will take home will be worth the time you all have spared.

A decade ago, our college was a small & struggling organisation. And, if we talk about today, our graduates have widely-spread throughout the globe in search for growth, learning, knowledge and their performances make difference everywhere. Many of you are still on my mind showcasing your excellence and outstanding performance.

I believe that our college has now become one of the great institutions of the city, which was ranked number ‘2’ by the Noida Education Department. And to achieve greatness, it has all the important prerequisites such as an expansive campus, conducive environment for all-round growth, experienced faculty, dedicated students, necessary financial resources, etc.

Lastly, I would like to praise the multiple roles played by you in the society. Many of you hold the key positions of major influence in the society; I would like to appreciate your efforts being done for the development of our society and justifying the years spent by you at this esteemed institution. Last but not the least; I would like to thank all of you for your keen participation as well as the support you have always extended towards your alma mater.

A very Good Evening to all of you present here. Respected Chairman, Principal Madam, Director Sir and my dear colleagues, all of our Alumni,

I feel deeply honoured standing here today as well as very nostalgic at getting the privilege of welcoming you all here. It’s been so many years, I still remember my first batch in 2005, your faces are still so fresh, dear children, a very warm welcome to all of you to this Alumni Meet of your school.

I appreciate this idea of Alumni Meet, which creates a special bonding between the students who have passed out & who have established themselves already in the big, outside world. I believe an Alumni Meet is a perfect platform for you all to meet your peers and teachers and revive the contacts.

The school began many years ago as a primary school but in 2006, it got successfully upgraded to +2 levels. The requirements were quite immediate; they were genuinely felt by the population of the city and the neighbouring areas. At that time he didn’t know that he was giving a major uplift to the education facilities in the region. In 2006, we started with the best faculty, experts and support staff, and I feel proud to say that over the years, we have scaled further heights of success and glory, earning a credible name in the education field.

Our past results have shown that our academic graph has been steadily going up. We have embarked on a mission to empower all sections of society with the light of knowledge. Our concern has wide parameters such as making our students good citizens at the level of city, state, nation, in fact, the entire globe. Our concern is whether we as teachers are able to create the qualities in you of respect, empathy, love, tolerance, honesty and above all, humanity.

Abc School has always set for itself higher goals to attain, the management especially Chairman Sir, Principal Madam, and Vice-Principal Madam and all other teachers including me are striving to attain perfection and it’s a long process. This meeting organised today is for us to get together, think & show our concern & for you to give your true opinion about when and where did we faulted & where all we achieved excellence.

So, once again, I welcome you dear children, although it’s been so long but it seems as it was yesterday. Faces are still very fresh for me from H to J to K to L and many more, really I am delighted to see you people and request you all to enjoy the evening & live the moment.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s the time to rewind your school days, when this school started nurturing you, gradually and slowly with delicate care & love. For some of you, who started here as kids, this was the place which bloomed you out of your saplings and strengthened your adolescence, I  bet you remember your first day in school when you entered with tearful eyes bidding a farewell to your mother for the day, but the compassionate, bright, and cheerful smiles of your teachers with open arms, wiped your tears & warmly welcomed you to new beginnings, introducing your classmates who replaced the comfort zones of your sweet homes and that eternal connection of belongingness is today proved by your priceless presence here.

Time went on & schooling became one of the best experiences, be it the mouth watering canteen food or the not so cold “cold drink”, what an excitement do those memories bring to you. Today, we picked up those threads & continued the tradition of our Alumni Meet, so that we can weave your precious memories again.

With great enthusiasm and excitement, we request you all to share your experience of outside world with us, how far has this foundation laid by this wonderful school has taken you in life. This school has not left any stone unturned in making its students good human beings and worthy citizens. From moral values to public speaking to self-defence, all qualities and attributes have been inculcated in you.

I feel deeply honoured standing here today as well as very privileged to welcome you all here. It’s been so many years, I still remember my first lecture with you people, your faces are still so fresh, dear graduates, a very warm welcome to all of you to this Alumni Meet of your institution.

When our college began, it began with a struggling phase due to lot of competition in the city, but gradually when our institution appointed some of the most experienced faculties, our college made its place in the Top 5 Colleges of the State & you all will be glad to know that our college is now ranked as 1 st in the city & has got many awards for the back to back outstanding performances in the university exams by the students.

The benchmark set by the graduates like you is itself a proof that our institution’s graph has been steadily going up. But, we are not limited to this; our commitment is something deeper and more pervasive, which requires a lot of introspection. Our involvement has wide parameters as to whether our students grow up into good citizens or not at the level of city, state, nation or the entire world. Our concern is whether we as faculty we were able to create in you the qualities of respect, empathy, love, tolerance, honesty and above all, humanity.

A very Good Morning to all! We are all gathered here for the alumni meet of the brilliant graduates of this college. It is a very momentous day as we have a golden opportunity of meeting our graduate peers after such a long period. I am sure that we all have been eagerly waiting for this day since the announcement of this official reunion as celebrating the spirit of being graduated and meeting our former classmates is a sheer pleasure.

I express my hearty gratitude to each one of you for taking out time from your busy schedules to be with us on this occasion. Some of you might have even come from another city to attend this function. I hope that your sacrifice might not go waste and give you memories that will be remembered for your lifetime.

This college has given us unforgettable impressions. Those occasional class bunks, canteen gossips, late night studies and hostel fun, life mantras from teachers and countless other memories are about to stay in our minds forever. Fests organizations and extra-curricular activities organized by the college increased our exposure and made us confident and helped us a lot in striving and becoming what we are today. The wide range of tasks performed by us has given us a sense of responsibility towards our society and raised our conscience. Not only has this institution given us a tremendous learning experience, but also given us a chance to participate in various social and cultural events. Leaving aside the non scholastic activities, the lessons taught by our proficient professors have given us indispensable knowledge and guidance throughout our session. I am grateful to my teachers and professors for all their efforts to make us better persons support us throughout our college journey and of course help us score good grades.

I have seen this institution growing and grooming every single day because of this highly ambitious and committed faculty. It is their courage, hard work and patience which have helped in producing bright students who have done well in their respective careers. I have seen many of my batch mates who have reached extreme heights in their career and have established their names in their respective industries. All thanks to our respected Principal and Teachers! Without you it would not have been possible to tread such a great path.

In the end, I would like to congratulate all the ex-graduates of this college for successfully completing your respective courses and contributing to the goodwill of this institution. Good morning to the respected Principal, Vice Principal, my co-workers and our dear students. I truly regard it as an honour and privilege for standing here to contribute to this unforgettable moment, as we celebrate the successful completion of the high school education of these brilliant students. We had been longing for this day from so long and finally this auspicious day has arrived where we get to meet one of our favourite batches of this school. I would like each one of you present here to give them a huge round of applause. It is a very significant day for all of us as we have the privilege of meeting you all after such a while.

It is my sheer pleasure to be a part of the school which has excelled in providing such talented youth to the nation. From the very beginning, this school has attained distinctions in sports, academics and even extra-curricular activities. I remember the day when the students of class XII brought a golden trophy and made headlines in the entire city. Such big and small achievements have always contributed to the development of this institution. This would not have been possible without the efforts of our truly dedicated and committed students and faculty members.

I know bidding adieu to the school life was not an easy job for you as you have made such sweet impressions here. It was equally difficult for us, the teachers to part with brilliant minds we had taught. I appreciate these former students for always staying in touch with us and coming to us for their major guidance and counselling decisions. As you all are in a completely different world now after stepping out of your school days, you will get to learn many lessons in life. Many of you have moved to different cities for your higher education. Some are even working. I am certain about the fact that you all are performing your best whatever field you are in. In executing responsibilities of a good teacher, we have never backed out and always taught you with all our strengths to make you perform better whether it’s academics, sports or any other sphere of activity. I wish that you never give up in life and earn fame, name and a promising career and come to us to tell your success stories and reward this school with your achievements.

In the end, I would like to say that an institution’s fame rests not only on its administration and teaching staff, but also on the achievements and developments of its students. Former Lone Star College assistant dean of students accused of killing his baby with 'blunt object'

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A former Lone Star College employee is accused of murdering his 6-month-old son last year.

Emmit Eugene Carter, who worked at the college as an assistant dean of students, is being held behind bars on a $300,000 bond.

Carter was charged Friday and made his first court appearance Monday, where his bond was reduced from $600,000.

According to court records, Carter shook and hit his child, Maverick, with a blunt object on July 8, 2023, leading to the baby's death nearly four days later at Texas Children's Hospital.

The child's autopsy ruled the manner of death as a homicide.

On Saturday, Lone Star College told ABC13 it still employed Carter. However, the college said he was no longer working there on Monday.

"What we've alleged is there are blunt force injuries to the child caused by either a blunt object, blunt instrument, or even violent acceleration/deceleration forces," Assistant District Attorney Edward Appelbaum said after Monday's court hearing.

Appelbaum said the reason they pursued a murder charge more than a year after the baby's death was because they wanted to wait for the child's autopsy to be completed and to review all details before they felt confident moving forward.

"It appears (Carter) was the sole caretaker (of the child) at the time," Appelbaum said, adding that the baby's mother was out of town and he was the only one with the child.

ABC13 also heard from Carter's defense attorney, Will Vaughn, who denied the allegations against him.

Vaughn explained that Carter was married to Maverick's mother at the time of the incident, and they lived in the same house. She allegedly left for a trip 24 hours before the baby was taken to the hospital.

The defense claimed that they saw nothing in medical reports that would indicate Maverick's injuries happened during the time frame that he was left solely in his dad's care.

"What happened here is not a crime. It's a horrible tragedy, and there's a lot of mystery to that, but it wasn't a crime," Vaughn said. "The fact that an innocent man like Dr. Carter is having to be here in handcuffs, answering for something he didn't do instead of mourning the death of his child is heartbreaking."

Carter also has a 9-year-old son, with whom he shares custody with a mother different from Maverick's. Vaughn said they all have a great relationship and described Carter as someone with a "clean track record" and an "upstanding member of society."

Carter, 38, has worked in education for nearly two decades and, if convicted, could face up to 99 years in prison.

His next court date is Oct. 16.

Board of Elections to determine if UNC virtual student IDs will count in upcoming election

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Board of Elections is scheduled to take up a question about voter identification later Tuesday.

The board will hold a remote meeting at 12:30 p.m. On the docket is a question about what type of photo identification college students can use to vote in the upcoming election.

November's election will be the first presidential election where North Carolina voters are required to abide by the recently approved voter ID law.

Over the past year, the Board of Elections has been approving more forms of ID that voters can use to prove their identity. The board has this complete list of which type of student IDs will be allowed.

In a recent board meeting, one member raised an objection to allowing UNC students to use their virtual student ID. That objection is what the board will take up in its 12:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday. A vote is expected at the end of the meeting.

Some states allow virtual driver's licenses to be used as valid forms of voter identification; North Carolina is not one of those states.

She thought those girls deserved an opportunity for a good education, and decided to provide it herself.

Ashley Biden in the spotlight ahead of president's DNC speech

When President Joe Biden bids the Democratic National Convention a bittersweet farewell Monday night, he will be introduced by one of his closest champions, his youngest daughter, Ashley.

Although she has remained mostly out of the spotlight compared to her siblings and mother, she has helped promote and advocate on behalf of her father as far back as her childhood.

Ashley Biden, 43, was born in June 1981, the only child of the then-Delaware senator and his second wife, Jill Biden. Ashley's older half-brothers, Beau and Hunter, quickly developed a strong bond with her, her mother told Delaware Today magazine in 2018.

"Her brothers looked after her. And, she always looked up to them. Wherever they went, she wanted to go, and they took her," she told the magazine.

At an early age, Ashley Biden was vocal about animal rights, and talked to her father about the issues facing dolphins being caught in tuna fishing nets. Then-Sen. Biden would go on to introduce the 1990 Dolphin Protection Consumer Information Act, which required tuna manufacturers to label their products as dolphin free, and he worked with then-California Democratic Rep. Barbara Boxer to help get it passed.

She would go on to earn a degree in cultural anthropology from Tulane University in 2003 and worked as a social worker in Philadelphia and at the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families.

She earned a master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy and Practice in 2010. Two years later, she married physician Dr. Howard Krein.

Ashley Biden would frequently be seen on the campaign trail with her father in 2008 and after he was elected would be seen with him during major events in Washington, D.C., and around the world. Among those trips was a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican in 2016.

In 2012, she joined the Delaware Center for Justice and where she worked on programs to combat gun violence and teenage gang activity. She would eventually be promoted to serve as the non-profit's executive director.

She stepped down from her position at the non-profit in 2019 to help with her father's presidential campaign. Throughout the campaign season, Ashley Biden made visits to several stops and touted her father's work and policies to voters.

She was also active on social media encouraging voters to support her father.

It was also during this time that Ashley Biden became a victim of identity theft by two Florida residents.

Aimee Harris and Robert Kurlander stole a diary she left behind at one of her former residences in September 2020 and then sold it to right-wing activist group Project Veritas, according to federal prosecutors.

Harris and Kurlander pleaded guilty in August 2022 to "to conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property involving the theft of personal belongings of an immediate family member of a then-former government official who was a candidate for national political office," according to the Justice Department.

Harris was sentenced in April to one month in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and Kurlander's sentencing is slated for the fall. Ashley Biden did not attend the sentencing hearing, "because it would only increase my pain," she said in a letter to the judge.

"The point of the theft, I assume, was to be able to peddle grotesque lies by distorting my stream-of-consciousness thoughts," she said.

She asked the judge to impose prison time on Harris in the letter that was unsealed after the sentencing.

"My goal in asking Your Honor to impose a term of incarceration is to ensure that another woman isn't bullied and shamed like this ever again. The despair I have often felt will never truly go away," she wrote. "But I ask Your Honor to hold Ms. Harris accountable so that she thinks twice before doing it to someone else."

After her father was elected to the White House, Ashley Biden continued to be at her family's side and accompanied them on several trips including June's visit to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

When the president delivered his speech declaring that he would not seek reelection last month, Ashley Biden was among the family members who was in the Oval Office. She was seen teary-eyed and hugging her father after the speech was done.

Welcome to GW, Fall 2024

Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,

Welcome to the fall 2024 semester! 

As we embark on a new academic year, we welcome thousands of new Revolutionaries to our GW family and welcome back our returning students, faculty, and staff. This is always an exciting time, and it is wonderful to see our campuses come alive with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead. 

In just a matter of days, new and returning students will once again be learning alongside our nation's leaders while being educated by a remarkable and highly talented faculty. On our fields and court, in our pool, on our stages, and in our studios, GW athletes and artists will compete and create, embodying the passion, dedication, and excellence that defines the Revolutionary spirit. In our classrooms, labs, and more than 60 centers and institutes, our community will engage in world-changing research, drive social change, and become the next generation of leaders and changemakers. This year, there is so much to look forward to. 

This semester is particularly special for our community as we find ourselves on the doorstep of a pivotal moment in both the history of our university and our nation. In just a few weeks, we will announce the next phase of our strategic framework process, which will chart a new course for our university now and into the future. At the same time, our nation is embarking on its next presidential  election . At times like these, our location in the heart of the nation's capital isn't just a point on a map—it's an invitation to participate in history. We all know the GW community is one of the most active and  engaged in the world, and we look forward to seeing our campuses come alive with the spirit of democracy. After all,  Democracy is in our DNA , and this shared identity helps unite our community across differences.

Embracing this spirit of engagement also means acknowledging the lessons learned during the last academic year and thinking deeply about how we, an educational institution with a renowned faculty and a community of passionate and committed advocates, engage with one another productively and respectfully. To that end, over the summer, the university reflected and planned for the academic year ahead.

This work was guided by three core commitments: fostering a safe campus environment, respecting the GW community's right to  free expression , and maintaining the operation of our education and research programs with minimal interruption.

While each of these commitments is essential, we recognize they exist in tension. Balancing them has required thoughtful consideration and sometimes difficult decisions. To inform the community of our fall plans and support you in making your voice heard, we are pleased to share the next iteration of GW's  Plan to Strengthen our Community. This website provides important information for the fall, including university safety and security measures, resources for expressive activities at GW, and links to applicable policies and codes. It also describes new initiatives designed to enhance our community engagement and conflict education. As we continue to share these plans with leadership from across the university, including our deans, the Faculty Senate, the Student Government Association, and the Staff Council, we want everyone to have a chance to  share their thoughts and questions.

At GW, we are more than just students, faculty, and staff. Whether conducting research that pushes the boundaries of knowledge, participating in internships that shape life-changing policy, making your voice heard through advocacy and activism, or transforming lives through patient care and community service, you are a part of the GW community, and you belong here. We hope you will engage in robust and respectful dialogue this academic year and pursue your passions and ideals rigorously and enthusiastically. As you embrace these pursuits, remember that our strength as a community lies in our commitment to supporting and understanding one another as we face challenges and celebrate triumphs in the year ahead.

The Definition of Welcome Speech

A welcome speech is a type of speech given by the presenter at the start of an event or a ceremony. To show thankfulness towards the people present who have taken pains to come to the said ceremony.

The Use of Welcome Speech for Children

You may wonder why a welcome speech should be useful for children. Since a child’s attention span is shorter than adults. The use for a welcome speech for children is not just to welcome them but to welcome their parents as well. It is to show that they are also important .

Tips to Make a Fun Welcome Speech for Children

As we all know children have a short attention span. So it is difficult to keep them still to listen and interact during an event. But what if you found a way to draw your little audiences in, would you use those tips to do so? So here we have some tips on how to make a fun welcoming speech for children followed by how to present your speech to your young audiences. Let’s take a look shall we?

• Get creative – Think about when writing your speech, your main audience are children and their parents. How are you going to welcome them if your speech is too mature or too difficult to understand for your younger audience. Simply get creative . 
• Tone of writing – This is also important to remember. When writing your welcome speech, watch the tone of your speech. By doing this, you are going to read it out loud and let someone else listen to see if it fits your little audience. 
• Think like a child – To get to their level of understanding, think like one. If you were in their shoes, would you have enjoyed a long and boring speech? Children would prefer to listen to a speech where it’s short and fun to listen too. 
• Short and simple – Don’t make the speech too long nor too short. Try to get their attention with something short and simple. But at the same time being creative. 
• Practice your speech – Ask someone to help you see if your speech is appropriate for your little audience, if it is not, revise the speech and try again. 
• Make eye contact – This is the part where you are going to be making the speech, remember to make eye contact, especially at the parents. This way, you are telling them you value their attendance. 

Can I make the speech in a letter format?

If you want to be as creative and make it as easy as possible, you may make your speech in the form of a letter. Present it to your audience with a smile and some gestures. Remember you are dealing with children.

How creative do I need to be when presenting the speech?

Use facial and hand gestures. Your audience are children after all. Make them laugh, make them smile whatever needs to be done. As long as you are able to capture their attention even for 5 minutes.

How long can I make the speech before the children would stop paying attention?

Longer than a minute but shorter than five minutes. Within those minutes are perfect enough to grab their undivided attention.

Making children speeches can be a challenge. Since it is really that difficult to make them pay attention with words that they may not be able to comprehend. To do this, use simple words and simple hand gestures. Don’t forget to smile when you present your speech. Make eye contact to make them feel welcome.
