CE & CPR Resources

Lists of resources to meet the required continuing education components.

To renew on active status, dentists and dental hygienists must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years or qualify for an exemption. Licensees are also required to complete a minimum of one hour each in the following areas:

• Infection control
• Iowa jurisprudence

*Only required for dentists who prescribe opioids within the current renewal period (Sept. 2022 - Aug. 2024).

**Only required for dentists who hold a moderate sedation or general anesthesia permit. This requirement does not apply to dental hygienists.

To renew on active status, dental assistants must complete 20 hours of hours of continuing education every two years or qualify for an exemption. Registrants are also required to complete a minimum of one hour each in the following areas:

• Dental radiography***

***Only required of dental assistants who hold a qualification in dental radiography.

The following lists are not comprehensive.  Additional resources may exist that are not listed here.  This is intended to serve as a starting point for licensees and registrants who need assistance locating courses.  This page will be updated as additional resources are provided to the board.  

CPR Certification

If completing one of the following courses for the didactic portion of the CPR certification, you may want to verify with the hands-on instructor whether they will accept the online training from the resources below.  While the board will accept the following courses to meet the didactic/online training component, the board cannot make CPR instructors accept the training when determining whether the CPR certification is complete including hands-on training.

Note : This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of CPR training providers. Licensees and registrants are not restricted to this of providers for obtaining or maintaining CPR certification.

Infection Control

The CDC last updated the guidelines for infection control in dental offices in the December 19, 2003 issue of the  Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), Vol. 52, No. RR-17 .

Please note : Not all OSHA courses will meet this requirement.  Although there may be some overlap between OSHA training and infection control standards, not all OSHA courses address matters related to infection control.  If your OSHA training includes a minimum of 1 hour focused on CDC guidelines for infection control in dental offices, that training will meet this requirement.  Should you use an OSHA course to meet this requirement, you may be asked to submit evidence of the focus on infection control if you should be selected for continuing education audit.

The following providers offer continuing education courses in the area of infection control.  You are not restricted to this list to meet requirements for continuing education in the area of infection control.

You may also complete a course via one of the providers listed below.

Dental Radiography

Note: Be aware that not all continuing education courses about intraoral imaging will meet the continuing education requirement for dental assistants of two (2) hours in the area of dental radiography.

Beginning in 2019, dentists who prescribe opioids during the previous biennium renewal period are required to complete a minimum of one hour of continuing education in the subject of opioids.  The training shall include the following:

• Guidelines for prescribing opioids, including recommendations on limitations of dosages and the length of prescriptions;
• Risk factors for abuse; and
• Non-opioid and non-pharmacologic therapy options.

The continuing education course in opioids may be counted towards the renewal requirement of 30 hours of continuing education.  In the event the course does not cover the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain, the licensee shall read the guideline prior to license renewal.

Non-DHY students

Steps for current Ohio State students that are interested in declaring the DHY pre-major:

• Have a minimum 2.7 or higher cumulative OSU GPA
• Have earned 12 hours or more of graded OSU credit (excluding terms of enrollment through post-secondary enrollment programs such as Academy)

Students interested in declaring the DHY pre-major it is recommend you complete a minimum of 4 hours observing a dental hygienist to ensure you are really interested in the profession.

Delta Dental’s $16.3M Grant Aims to Put a Dent in the US’ Access to Oral Healthcare Problem

Delta Dental’s Community Care Foundation has announced it will give $16.3 million in grants to enhance oral healthcare for underserved communities. This largest-ever annual funding aims to tackle critical areas including senior oral health, health equity, and rural access.

Delta Dental Community Care Foundation, the philanthropic branch of Delta Dental of California and affiliates, has unveiled an unprecedented $16.3 million in funding through its Access to Care Grant Program. This initiative targets the enhancement of oral healthcare quality and accessibility across the foundation’s 15-state service area, including Washington, DC. The grants support local community partners, particularly Federally Qualified Health Centers, in addressing crucial needs. This year’s grants mark the largest annual funding by the program, aiming to drive health equity and promote innovation in oral health services.

A poignant example of the program’s impact is 6-year-old Flora, who received urgent dental care through Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County in California. Flora’s severe dental decay required multiple extractions, crowns, and fillings, all facilitated with careful consideration of her asthma. Thanks to the foundation’s support, Flora experienced significant relief and her family expressed deep gratitude for the personalized care.
