Taharat (cleanliness) and keeping a clean body and surroundings are very important in Islam. Everyone must refrain from eating and drinking those things which are Najis; and (as for) the clothing that one wears in Salat - which is the best of actions in worshipping Allah - they must be clean, and it is best that they are the most pure of clothing. Because of this, it is necessary to know what things are Najis and the way to make them Tahir.

Issue 12: Everything that exists is Tahir except for eleven things, and those things that come into contact with them, also become Najis.

Issue 13: The things that are Najis, are the following:

1. Non-Muslim ( Kafir )

1. The sweat of a Najis eating animal

Issue 14: The urine and stool of humans and all animals whose meat is Haram (to eat) and whose blood gushes out, is Najis.

Issue 15: The urine and stool of animals whose meat is Halal, like the cow and sheep, and animals whose blood does not gush out, like the snake and fish, are Tahir.

Issue 16: The urine and stool of animals whose meat is Makruh to eat, like the horse and donkey, is Tahir.

Issue 17: The urine and droppings of birds whose meat is Haram (to eat), like the eagle, are Tahir, but it is better to stay away from such things.

• The Rules of the Corpse

Issue 18: An animal that has not been slaughtered according to the rules of Islam is called a corpse. 1

Issue 19: Animals are divided into two categories: some have blood that gushes out; meaning that if their neck is cut, the blood comes out with force. Other animals have blood that does not gush out; meaning that if their neck is cut, the blood does not come out with force.

Issue 20: The corpse of an animal whose blood does not gush out; like the fish, is Tahir, even if it dies in water.

Issue 21: (As for) the corpse of an animal whose blood gushes out; the parts that contain no life - like the hair and the horns, are Tahir; and the parts that contain life - like the flesh and skin, are Najis.

Issue 22: All parts of the body of the dog and pig - whether living or dead - are Najis.

Issue 23: The complete body of a person who has passed away, no matter how recently he has died, and if his body has not yet gone cold (with the exception of those parts which contain no life, like the nails, hair, teeth, etc.) is Najis.

Issue 24: Once the dead body has been given a Ghusl, the body is Tahir.

Issue 25: The body of a person who fights in the way of Allah to protect Islam and is killed on the war front, is tahir and it is not necessary to give the body a Ghusl or a Kafan.

• The Rules of Blood

Issue 26: The blood of people and all animals, whose blood gushes out, like the chicken and goat, is Najis.

Issue 27: The blood of animals, whose blood does not gush out, like the fish and mosquito, is Tahir.

Issue 28: According to Ihtiyat Wajib, one must avoid eggs that have even a small drop of blood in them. However, if the blood is in the yolk of the egg, and the covering around the yolk has not broken, then the eggwhite is tahir.

Issue 29: The blood that comes out from around the teeth (gums) and that mixes with saliva is tahir when it comes out of the mouth. In the event (that the blood is mixed with saliva), it is permissible to spit it out, although it is better not to spit it out.

• How does something become Najis?

Issue 30: If something Tahir comes into contact with something Najis, and one of these two things is wetter than the other and the wetness of one reaches the other, then that Tahir thing will become Najis.

Issue 31: If a person does not know if something Tahir has become Najis or not, then it should be considered as being Tahir, and research and investigation is not necessary, even if one is able to ascertain if the thing is Tahir or Najis.

Issue 32: Eating and drinking things, which are Najis, is Haram.

Fiqh of Taharah and Salah – Urdu eLearning Course (FTSUeL) enables individuals to learn at their own pace with easy global access about two most fundamental aspects of daily worship, Taharah and Salah. The course provides an out-of-the-classroom disciplined individual learning environment with set timelines for completing lessons.

• Learn the wisdom and importance of matters pertaining to Purification by studying the book  Kitab al-Tahara  by Iqbal Kilani and ahadeeth from  Sahih Bukhari (Kitab al-Wudu to Kitab al-Tayammum)
• Acquire a thorough understanding of the sources, types, process and requirements of purification
• Learn many rituals that a person needs to perform when purifying oneself from minor and major impurities.
• Have a clear understanding of the requirements and rules of fulfilling all recommended and obligatory prayers by studying the book  Namaz e Nabawi
• Be able to fulfil obligatory and recommended prayers in the correct manner
• Acquire the knowledge of leading congregational prayers, know all ‘missed’ and ‘make up’ rules of prayers
• Be able to worship Allah subhanu wa ta’ala and avoid serious mistakes due to ignorance

This course is taught through the  Kitab al-Tahara, Sahih Bukhari (Kitab al-Wudu to Kitab al-Tayammum)  and  Namaz e Nabawi  lecture series delivered by Dr. Farhat Hashmi in Urdu. All assignments and books are available in Urdu.

Offered through a web-based learning management system (Moodle) on Al-Huda eCampus

• Electronic access to audio lectures and assignments
• Course is divided into two subjects:  Fiqh of Taharah  and  Fiqh of Salah
• Minimum requirement is to complete two lessons per week
• Evaluation is through written assignments for each subjects
• Students aged 15 and above
• Should be able to read, write and understand the Urdu language
• Able to pay fee online (no other method of fee payment is available on eCampus)

WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM ME AS A STUDENT?

• Students are expected to start the course as soon as s(he) registers after paying the term enrollment fee on the course website. This includes downloading and listening to the audio lessons for each week
• Students are encouraged to take notes while listening to the recordings. This is an important part of the learning process. Students can then share main points and reflections on what they have learnt with others to encourage and invite people to study Fiqh. However, it is not permitted to share the notes from the recording verbatim with others or on blogs
• A student must complete the assignments with a passing grade of 80% for each assignment

WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF THE COURSE IN CHARGE?

• Students must not wait for their course in charge to contact them, it is the student’s duty to start the course as soon as s(he) registers on the course website
• The course in charge will be evaluating student’s performance by grading the assignments submitted by the student
• The course in charge will answer questions related to the lessons that the student may have, via email or student forums on the main course page

Taharah in Islam

What is Taharah?

Taharah (cleanliness) in accordance to Islamic law is an act of purifying oneself from ritual impurity or even najis or filth until one is eligible to perform a particular ibadah for worshipping Allah i.e. performing daily prayers etc.

Purity in Islam

Besides purifying the body, one must also purify his/her clothes and place. There are two types of taharah outer cleanliness and inner cleanliness. Outer cleanliness is related to your physical appearance, it means you should take bath, perform wadu and your dress should be clean. Inner cleanliness is related to your soul and heart; it means you should avoid sins and pride.

What Quran says about Taharah?

In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty said:

“Allah does not intend to inconvenience you, but He intends to purify you and perfect His favor to you, so that you may give thanks.” (Quran, 5:6)

Importance of Taharah in Islam

Islam gives great importance to taharah it as an indispensable condition, preliminary and key to certain kinds of worshipping.

Allah Almighty said in the Holy Quran:

“You are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah.” (Quran, 3:110)

The prophet states in the following hadith:

“The key to prayer is taharah that is cleanliness, the opening of it is takbir and the complement of it is salutation.” (Abu Dawud)

Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W.W) said about purity in one of his hadiths that “Cleanliness is half of the faith (Emaan).” (Sahih Muslim).

Taharah is preliminary condition for some kinds of worshipping and an indispensable element of health and hygiene. It is also a means of increase of sustenance.

Taharah in Hadith

• Abu Malik at-Ash'ari reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:

Cleanliness is half of faith and al-Hamdu Liliah (Praise be to Allah) fills the scale, and Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah) and al-Hamdu Liliah (Praise be to Allah) fill upwhat is between the heavens and the earth, and prayer is a light, and charity is proof (of one's faith) and endurance is a brightness and the Holy Qur'an is a proof on your behalf or against you. All men go out early in the morning and sell themselves, thereby setting themselves free or destroying themselves. [Sahih Muslim, book 2]

• Mus'ab b. Sa'd reported:'

Abdullah son of Umar came to Ibn'Amir in order to inquire after his health as he was ailing. He said Ibn 'Umar, why don't you prayto Allah for me? He said: I heard of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) say: Neither the prayer is accepted without parification nor is charity accepted out of the ill-gotten (wealth), and thou wert the (governor) of Basra [Sahih Muslim Book 2, Number 0433].

• This hadith is also narrated on the authority with the same chain of transmitters and in the hadith of Abu Usama the words are: "He who performed the ablution well and then offered the obligatory prayer.” [Sahih Muslim Book 2, Number 0439]

Types of Taharah in Islam

Taharah, that is cleanliness, is mainly divided into two:

• Taharah (cleanliness) from Najasah

• Taharah (cleanliness) from Hadath.

1. Taharah from Najasah

Najis (Arabic: ن ⁇ س ) means ritually impure in Shariah teachings. A Muslim is brought into a condition of ritual impurity by interaction with najis objects (Arabic: ن ⁇ اسة najāsa, in contrast to ⁇ ahārah, ritual pureness). Before religious functions like daily prayers are conducted, ritual purifying would then be needed.

Material dirt and impurities are called “najasah”. The substance that is not clean is called “najis”. Cleanliness from najasah means cleaning the najis substance on the body or clothes.

2. Taharah from Hadath

Hadath is a condition of dirt, an impurity that prohibits certain kinds of worship from being performed by a human; for example, not having wudu, janabah, to be in the cycle of menstruation, to be in the state of puerperium (the state when a person has to make ghusl). Based on the part of hadath, Tahara from hadath is realised by making wudu or ghusl.

Thus, taharah is the most important thing which has been focused in Islam.

‏‏‏‏ سیدناخذیفہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے مذکورہ روایت کی طرح ہی مروی ہے الفاظ کی کچھ تبدیلی کے ساتھ۔

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ، بِمِثْلِهِ ، وَلَمْ يَقُولُوا : لِيَتَهَجَّد .

Pilot licence issue was not only reason behind pia flights’ ban to eu: senate committee told.

RAWALPINDI: Restriction on PIA flights to Europe was not imposed because of the pilot licence issue only, but also due to the warning issued to Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) about safety concerns a year ago.

This emerged during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Aviation chaired by Senator Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo in Parliament House on Monday.

Senator Saleem Mandviwalla informed the meeting that the restriction on the PIA flights to Europe was not only the result of the pilot licence issue, but a year before that the PCCA had received a warning about safety concerns. The secretary aviation confirmed that a warning had been received before the pilot licences issue.

The meeting was informed that the PCAA was equipped with a state of the art system for air traffic management and navigation system.

The committee meeting was convened to discuss ongoing issues plaguing the aviation industry.

Senator Sherry Rehman sought immediate attention to the “licence-gate” challenge and the ban on PIA from flying to the European Union (EU) for the last four years. She stressed the need for accountability and transparency in addressing both the issues which were independent of each other, but remained shockingly unaddressed and opaque.

She questioned why the civil aviation was allowed to conduct the exams for licences and put out a list of so-called fake licences at the same time. The then minister for aviation, she added, made a speech that downed PIA and its trained pilots from a slump that they have never been able to recover from.

Senator Rehman also expressed concern over the lack of accountability and transparency in such a matter of grave national importance.

Despite four years of inquiry, she added, no one who was actually responsible had been held accountable for the grounding of the air fleet from flying to the EU, nor for the pilots’ issue.

Senator Rehman said accountability was crucial, adding if ordinary citizens were involved they would have been jailed by now.

She emphasised that parliament holds itself accountable, and the civil service must do the same but must understand that boilerplate presentations are no longer acceptable in the upper house of parliament, because most of us have a better acquaintance with the data and the hidden issues that have been pushed under the rug.

She said the report prepared regarding the European Union’s safety protocols be shared with the committee. She also asked the inquiry report regarding the ban on pilots be presented in the committee. The committee chair also agreed to a special session on the two issues.

The committee expressed dissatisfaction with the working of the CAA and the prolonged unresolved issues affecting the airlines. Members criticised the director general of the CAA for failing to provide relief to pilots and described this period as a ‘dark era’ for Pakistan’s aviation industry. The secretary aviation assured the committee that the pilots’ issue will be resolved in two weeks.

The committee was informed that PIA still remains banned from flying to Europe due to international regulatory air safety concerns. However, the PIA chief executive officer informed the meeting that majority of the air safety concerns had already been addressed.

The director general Airport Security Force informed the committee that a new hi-tech 70kg weighing camera had been installed at Jinnah International Airport which had the ability to see an individual at a distance of 15km and can move on 360 degrees. Moreover, 28 hi-tech baggage scanning machines had been installed at airports while 39 more were in the pipeline.

The ASF chief also informed the meeting that baggage of all travelers were scanned, however, some VVIPs were exempted from body search. He said 24 ASF officials had been martyred so far, including 11 in Karachi in the line of duty.

The meeting was also informed that Nawabshah airport that was affected and its light system damaged due to flooding was an alternative airport of Karachi. The CAA representative said Nawaz Shah Airport had been made functional and can be used for landing of A320 aircraft. And Nawab Shah Airport was being made for landing of Boeing 777.
