6 fun-filled Christmas activities for school children

Christmas activities for ks1 children  , christmas colouring tasks.

If you’re looking for Christmas activities for KS1 children, why not entertain your little one with some festive colouring tasks?

Colouring is a great way for little ones to use their imagination and engage their creative side. And it’ll help your child develop plenty of key skills! Colouring helps children develop motor skills, encourages patience, helps with concentration, and improves their handwriting skills. What more could you want from Christmas activities for school children?

We love colouring at Santa Academy. That’s why our activity packs are filled with colouring activity sheets! Here are some of the Christmas crafts for KS1 children available in our activity packs:

  • Decorate the Lacus Island Christmas tree with Tobias .
  • Design your own Christmas cracker with Gerry .
  • Create your own gift wrap with Douglas.
  • Design your own Christmas jumper with Tilly Twinkle and Doug Taped .

Scavenger hunt

Next on our list of Christmas activities for KS1 children – entertain your little one with a Christmas-themed scavenger hunt!

Scavenger hunts make the perfect festive activity for children. They’re super fun – but also a great way for your child to develop their skills! When they take part in a scavenger hunt, children learn how to solve problems and work as a team. Not to mention all the exercise they get as they run from clue to clue!

That’s why we’ve included various festive-themed scavenger hunts in our activity packs. If you’re looking for Christmas activities for school children, check them out! Here are some examples of our scavenger hunts:

  • Reindeer Recruit scavenger hunt – Get ready, get set… and find all the items on the ultimate Reindeer Recruit scavenger hunt!
  • Fairy Fellow scavenger hunt – Can you find all the items in the ultimate Fairy Fellow scavenger hunt? Let’s find out!
  • Elf Ed scavenger hunt – Find all the elf-related items in the ultimate Elf Ed scavenger hunt!

Write a letter to Santa

Our list of Christmas activities for KS1 children wouldn’t be complete without this one! Encourage your child to write a letter to Santa.

Writing a letter to Santa is the perfect way to develop your child’s writing skills. Most children are so excited by writing a letter to Santa that they don’t even realise they’re learning new skills. After all, it means that Christmas is just around the corner! It doesn’t get more exciting than that, does it?

When your little one is finished with their letter, send them in the post. But remember, Santa needs to see the letter in plenty of time for Christmas Eve!

Christmas activities for KS2 children

If your child is slightly older, we haven’t forgotten about you! We have plenty of fun-filled, Christmas activities for KS2 children to keep them entertained over the festive period. Let’s go through some of them, shall we?

Creating writing tasks

First on our list of Christmas activities for KS2 children – engage their imagination with a creative writing task!

Creating writing tasks are perfect for KS2 children. It’s a chance to get creative, use their imagination and expand their vocabulary. And they can practice their handwriting skills while they’re at it!

You can change the creative writing task to suit your child’s age and ability. If your child is slightly older, why don’t you give them the freedom to create their own Christmassy ideas? See what their creative minds can come up with!

For slightly younger children, why not check out the creative writing tasks in our activity packs? Christmas activities for KS2 don’t get much better than creative writing with Noelle Newson, owner of Lacus Island’s bookstore! Here are the creative writing tasks on offer:

  • What is Santa looking at?

Encourage your child to write a story to match the image. What is Santa looking at? Is he watching Lacus Island’s annual Ready Steady Sledge event? Or maybe he’s watching his reindeer prepare his sleigh for Christmas Eve? It’s completely up to your child!

  • How did the snowman get there?

How did the snowman get there? With this Christmas prompt, it’s up to your child to decide! Maybe Santa and Mrs Claus built the snowman together? Or perhaps Mr Bon Bon made the snowman after a busy day making sweet treats for the Island? What magical story will they come up with?

Festive baking

When it comes to finding Christmas activities for KS2 children, baking is super fun! And there are plenty of Christmas recipes for kids out there, so you can find something age-appropriate for your child.

Baking helps children to develop their reading skills, improve their ability to follow instructions, and enhance their fine motor skills. And the end result makes for a super delicious, sweet treat!

If you’re stuck for baking ideas, we have some tasty recipes in our activity packs. Why not make Santa’s favourite cookies with Peppa Pudding ? Santa loves them, so they must be delicious!

Christmas word searches

Last, but certainly not least, on our list of Christmas activities for KS2 children – a Christmas word search!

We love festive-themed word searches because they’re a great way for children to develop their reading skills. Word searches encourage children to expand their vocabulary and learn new spellings. Not to mention the fact that they’re super fun!

So, if you’re looking for Christmas activities for school children, check out the festive word searches in our activity packs. Here are some of the word searches you’ll find:

  • Santa Academy word search

Christmas fairs open in Moscow

The “Strasbourg Market” on Manezhnaya Square. Source: RIA Novosti / Ramil Sitdikov

The most unusual fair this year is the “Strasbourg Market” on Manezhnaya Square . The market received a ceremonial opening from Strasbourg’s mayor, Roland Ries, on Dec. 23 and rolled into full-scale action the following day. Around 20 wooden marquees occupy this square adjacent to the Kremlin – elaborate festive palaces straight out of a Coca-Cola advertisement.

New Year tree's season in full swing in Russia

Photo Gallery: Muscovites make a handmade Christmas

The organizers hope to summon up the traditional festivity of Europe’s Christmas markets. Visitors will find gifts, Christmas trees, toys, French pastries and much more on sale. If there is no time to head off to the merrymaking in Europe, then the Strasbourg Market is a pretty good substitute.

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VVTs)– the outdoor venue still known to most as VDNKh (the Soviet Union’s “Exhibition of Economic Achievement”) – has a full-fledged Christmas Village set up. More than 50 festive booths have been erected, complete with traditionally carved window frames.

Inside these booths, painted toys, warm mittens, gingerbread cakes and other seasonal delights can be found. Gentlemen may “rest ye merry” in many cafes offering tea, Christmas cinnamon-infused punch, or perhaps a shot of something stronger. Those inclined toward creativity can make their own handmade presents, with the help of special master classes that turn out tree decorations or ornaments for the festive table.

Around the old VDNKh’s Friendship of the Peoples fountain, organizers are laying out an enormous ice rink that measures a total of 10,000 square meters (nearly 108,000 square feet). Even so, the rink will depend on the appearance of actual ice, and, so far, Moscow’s winter has been unseasonably mild. Unlike the other Christmas fairs, the Christmas Village at VVTs has been a hive of good cheer since Nov. 24. There is no such thing as starting a good thing too soon, it seems.

Another Christmas fair takes place from Dec. 22-30 at Sokolniki Park. Its organizers promise the real atmosphere of a European Christmas, with nods to the traditions of French, German, Belgian and Austrian Christmas markets. Not content with the usual range of yuletide novelties, visitors will be able to carry off crystal glass, furs and designer clothes from their shopping.

Hot topic: Winter Holidays

Master classes for visitors also offer culinary mastery, sewing, ceramic floral design, and much more. The Sokolniki Park event also has a Farmer’s Cafe that serves organically grown produce from the areas around Moscow.

There is one Christmas event visitors may have missed, if they did not make a note of it in advance. It ran for just two days (Dec. 22-23), organized by the glossy magazine Seasons in the Hermitage Gardens for the fourth year in a row. European revelry was the name of the game here, and the organizers aimed to conjure up the frolicsome fun of “ye goode olde days.”

More than 50 stands with different toys, ornaments, and handmade gifts were available, spread over the entire area of the Hermitage Gardens. Here, visitors could find cafes serving mulled wine, gingerbread, a skating rink, fun with snow, and sleigh-riding. Admission cost 350 rubles ($11) for adults, but children under 10 years of age were admitted free of charge.

Note: Russian New Year is on Jan. 1, but Russia has always dated Christmas as Jan. 7, in common with the rest of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
