The leaders play a significant role in the growth of the organization. They tend to provide guidance and support to the employees as well as make the decisions for the company in association with the various other directors of the organization.  It is being stated by the author Dasgupta, Suar and Singh (2013), that the leaders of the organization are the one who communicates both with the employees as well as the directors or the people belonging to the higher position of management of the organization. However, the approaches of communication which are mainly taken by the employees to communicate are not the same. The aim of the paper is to understand the communicational approaches which must be utilized by the leader in order to communicate. The paper will be focusing on a situation of the need of extending a health care facility in another city in which there is a requirement of the services.   The paper will be highlighting the facts or the information which must be incorporated in the communication by the leader, the communicational approach initiated by the leader in each group, and the challenges which are being faced by the leader from each group. Leaders must seek last-minute assignment help to effectively incorporate essential information, adapt communication approaches, and address distinct challenges within each group for successful outcomes.

It is the role of the leader to present the right information as well as the evidence to both the employees as well as the board of directors about the expansion of the health care facility in another city where is the requirement of the services.   In order to represent the information, the leader must incorporate the very necessity of the health care expansion. This will enable the directors to get convinced easily and approve the expansion of the health care facility. Additionally, it is also important for the leader to present the profits of the expansion of the health care in another city.  On the other hand, it is important for the leader to ensure that he has conducted the external analysis of the new location in which the health care facility can be initiated. This will help in avoiding any form of objections in establishing the organization. Additionally, this will even lead to the smooth running of the organization with a higher rate of profit. Therefore, the leader needs to incorporate such information in the presentation.  Additionally, the leader must even examine the policies of the government and must even provide them in the presentation.  On the other hand, while presenting it to the employees, the leader must ask all the employee to work with greater collaboration and find out details which can be of greater help for the organization.  Additionally,  the leader must ask the employees to give their valuable opinion and suggestions for the reason for expansion so that the right conduction of the expansion of the health care facility in another city can be initiated.

To communicate with the directors of the organization or the management heads of the organization, it is very important for the leader to utilize the manipulative form of communication. Liu (2016), states the fact that the manipulative form of communication can be considered to be one that is scheming and even calculating.  Researches show that manipulative communicators are mainly are the ones who are good at impacting or even controlling others for their own advantages. Through the utilization of the manipulative form of communication, the leader will be able to influence the directors or the management head of the organization.  Through the utilization of the manipulative form of communication, the leader will even be able to have an underlying message when they speak.  Through the utilization of this style of communication, the leader will be able to communicate to the directors and equally convince them for the expansion.  The leader must try to put his points along with the evidence for justification to the directors so that the directors get easily convinced. For the purpose of communicating with the employees, it is important for the leader to conduct the

the assertive form of communication. Hwang and Park (2018), states the fact that assertive communication is one of the best styles of communication which is being utilized for the purpose of dealing and even for the purpose of utilization. Researches show that they are mainly the effective form of communicators who tends to have high esteem.   This is the reason for which they are neither very aggressive and very passive (Niess and Diefenbach, 2016).  Through the use of the assertive style of communication, it is important for the leader to confidently put forward his opinion without pushing the restriction and neither being controlling. Choudhury et al., (2019), states that the people who utilize the assertive form of education are the ones who do not harm other individuals.  Additionally, it is to be noted that it is highly important for the leader to discuss the problem and even be very much straightforward and open.  Additionally, it is important for the leader to expect that suggestions or opinions will be coming from the employees which must be rightly heard by the leader (Swift et al., 2013).  It is very important for the leader to ensure that the employees who are providing their suggestions are not being disrespected.  Additionally, through the help of the assertive form of communication, it is important for the leader to ensure that they are appreciating the other employees of the organization. This will eventually lead to the expansion of more ideas which can further lead to the profit of the organization in itself.

Therefore, the leader might face problems in convincing the directors. Additionally, there will be problems regarding the collaboration and coordination among the employees. The lack of collaboration from the employees can lead the leader to face a various number of problems. Additionally, the employees might be disinterest and can not come up with any form of solutions or resolutions by which it is will be difficult for the leader to provide evidence to the directors.

In conclusion, it is to be noted that communication is one of the most effective forms which is mainly utilized in order to provide viewpoints. It can be considered as the medium which is being utilized in order to express one’s own beliefs, notions, values, and ideas. However, the wrong style of communication can invite various problems. How to Choose a Topic for a 10,000-Word Essay

Choosing a topic for a 10,000-word essay requires careful consideration, as this length allows for an in-depth exploration of a complex issue. Here are some steps to help you choose an appropriate and engaging topic:

  • Identify Your Interests and Strengths

Choose a topic that genuinely interests you. Writing a long essay will be much more enjoyable if you're passionate about the subject. Additionally, consider your strengths and areas of expertise. Selecting a topic you are knowledgeable about will make the research and writing process smoother.

  • Consider the Scope

Ensure the topic is neither too broad nor too narrow. A broad topic might be difficult to cover comprehensively, while a narrow topic might not have enough material to support a 10,000-word essay. Aim for a topic that allows for a detailed exploration and analysis.

  • Research Availability of Sources

Before finalizing your topic, conduct preliminary research to ensure there are enough credible sources available. Utilize academic databases, journals, books, and reputable websites. Accessing a wide range of sources will provide a strong foundation for your essay.

  • Check Relevance and Significance

Choose a topic that is relevant to your field of study and has significance in the current academic or social context. A topic with contemporary relevance can engage readers and add value to existing literature.

  • Formulate a Research Question

Develop a clear and focused research question or thesis statement. This will guide your research and writing, ensuring your essay remains on track. A well-defined research question helps in organizing your thoughts and structuring your essay effectively.

  • Consult with Advisors and Peers

Discuss potential topics with your professors, advisors, or peers. They can provide valuable feedback and suggest resources or angles you might not have considered. Their insights can help you refine your topic and approach.

  • Evaluate Feasibility and Interest

Finally, assess the feasibility of completing the essay within the given timeframe and word limit. Ensure the topic is challenging yet manageable. Your sustained interest in the topic is crucial for maintaining motivation throughout the writing process.

By following these steps, you can choose a compelling and manageable topic for your 10,000-word essay. Remember, the right topic will not only make the writing process more enjoyable but also result in a well-researched and engaging essay.

To create an engaging introduction, consider starting with a thought-provoking question, a surprising statistic, or a compelling anecdote. This will capture the reader's interest and make them want to continue reading. Keep your introduction concise and avoid going into too much detail.

5. Use Clear and Concise Language

When writing a 10,000-word essay, it's important to use clear and concise language to convey your ideas effectively. Avoid using unnecessary jargon or complex sentence structures that may confuse the reader. Instead, opt for simple and straightforward language that is easy to understand.

Writing Clear and Concise Sentences

To write clear and concise sentences, focus on one main idea per sentence. Use short and simple words instead of long and complicated ones. Break down complex ideas into smaller, more manageable parts. Avoid using excessive adjectives or adverbs that can clutter your writing.

6. Structure Your Essay Properly

A well-structured essay is easier to read and understand. Use paragraphs to separate different ideas or arguments. Each paragraph should have a clear topic sentence that introduces the main point of the paragraph. Use transition words and phrases to create a smooth flow between paragraphs.

Structuring Your Essay

When structuring your essay, start with an introduction that provides an overview of the topic and a clear thesis statement. Follow this with body paragraphs that present your arguments and evidence. End your essay with a conclusion that summarizes your main points and restates your thesis.

7. Edit and Proofread Your Essay

Editing and proofreading are essential steps in the essay writing process . Take the time to review your essay for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Ensure that your ideas are presented clearly and coherently. Consider seeking feedback from a peer or using online editing tools to improve your writing

Editing and Proofreading Tips

When editing and proofreading , read your essay aloud to catch any awkward or unclear sentences. Check for consistency in verb tense, pronoun usage, and formatting. Use online grammar and spell-check tools to identify and correct errors. Take breaks between editing sessions to maintain focus.

The time it takes to write a 10000 word essay can vary depending on several factors such as the topic, your writing speed, and your level of familiarity with the subject. On average, it may take anywhere from 20 to 40 hours to complete a 10000 word essay.

What is the recommended structure for a 10000 word essay?

A recommended structure for a 10000 word essay typically includes an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction should provide an overview of the topic and present a clear thesis statement. The body paragraphs should each focus on a specific point or argument, supported by evidence and analysis. The conclusion should summarize the main points and restate the thesis in a concise manner.

How do I manage my time effectively when writing a 10000 word essay?

To manage your time effectively when writing a 10000 word essay, it is important to create a schedule and set specific goals. Break down the essay into smaller tasks and allocate time for research, outlining, writing, and editing. Prioritize your tasks and eliminate distractions to stay focused. It can also be helpful to set deadlines for each section of the essay to ensure steady progress. Additionally, take breaks and allow yourself time for rest and relaxation to maintain productivity.

How to write 10,000 words a day

One of the most popular posts on the Thesis Whisperer is How to write 1000 words a day and not go bat shit crazy . Last year a Twitter follower brought to my attention a post called How I went from writing 2000 words to 10,000 words a day by the fiction writer Rachel Aaron.

I did a double take.

Can you really write 10,000 words a day? Well, Rachel says she can, with three conditions:

1) Know what you are going to write before you write it 2) Set aside a protected time to write, and 3) Feel enthusiastic about what you are writing

I read the post with interest. Much of what Rachel did conformed with what I suggest in my earlier post, but I couldn’t bring myself to really believe Rachel’s productivity claims. To regularly write 10,000 words: It’s the dream, right? Imagine if you could reliably write 10,000 words a day, how long would it take to finish your thesis… A week? How about a journal paper – a day?

Impossible!

Or so I thought.

The Thesis Bootcamp formula was developed by Liam Connell and Peta Freestone of the University of Melbourne. Thesis Bootcamp (and the veteran’s days which follow) is a total program designed to help late stage PhD students finish their thesis document (In some countries this document is called the ‘dissertation’, but I will use the Australian term ‘thesis’ here). The Thesis Bootcamp concept is simple – put a whole lot of PhD students in a room for a whole weekend and set them the goal of writing 20,000 words each.

Yes – you heard me right.

At every Thesis Bootcamp we have run, at least one student will achieve this goal, and many write many more words than they thought they would. In a previous post Peta Freestone and Liam Connell wrote about the ideas behind Thesis Bootcamp . In this post I want to reflect on Rachel Aaron’s threefold advice and put in the context of thesis writing.

1) Know what you are going to write before you write it

Composing a Thesis requires you to do different types of writing. Some of this writing is ‘generative’ in that it helps you form and articulate ideas by… just writing as much as you can, not as well as you can. It works best when you don’t second-guess yourself too much. The philosophy is ‘make a mess and then clean it up’. Perfectionist writers have a problem doing this, which is why we see so many perfectionists at our Bootcamps.

At Bootcamp we teach our students to focus the generative writing energy to productive effect. An important step in this process is for the student to spend at least a week making a ‘Thesis map’  before they come to Bootcamp. The map is essentially a series of sub-headings which the students use as prompts for composing new text, or re-using existing text.

Students, particularly those in the humanities and arts, tend to agonise over the Thesis document ‘structure’. I think the anxiety stems from the idea that ‘Thesis structure’ is some kind of perfect platonic form they need to discover.

It’s important to realise that structure is made, not found. Thesis structure is strongly influenced by disciplinary precedent and the content of the Thesis itself. A history PhD it might follow a timeline from the past to the present; a science PhD might echo the order of the experiments that have been performed. But multi-disciplinary PhDs, or PhDs in ‘polyglot’ disciplines like education, do not have comfortable traditions. This means you’ll have to make the structure up. Try the following technique:

  • This Thesis contributes to knowledge by…
  • This Thesis is important because…
  • The key research question is….
  • The sub-questions are….
  • Decide how long your Thesis will be. Most universities have a maximum word count. Aim for your Thesis to be at least 2/3 of this total (it’s likely you will write more than this, but this gives you some wriggle room).
  • Make a document with chapter headings and word counts next to them. Include an introduction of 2000 – 3000 words followed by up to seven chapters of equal length and a conclusion of around 4000 – 5000 words.
  • Under the conclusion heading write a rough list of points you think will go in there (hint – these should be answers to the research questions you have posed). Study these closely – have you got data, theories, evidence and arguments to support these conclusions? These concluding points, singularly or in combination, will form the ‘key learnings’ of the Thesis – the knowledge and ideas you want your readers to absorb.
  • Each chapter should have at least one key learning in it, maybe more. Under each chapter heading note the key learnings in the form of a brief synopsis of up to 300 words. This synopsis is like a mini abstract that explains what the rest of the chapter will be about.
  • Then make a list of the material you will include in the chapter as dot points. Don’t worry about the gaps and stuff you haven’t written yet – just make a note of them. These should be short sentences that will act as subheadings
  • Now ask yourself: If, at the end of the chapter, I want the reader to be convinced of the validity of this key learning, what needs to appear first? What comes next? And so on. Rearrange or write new subheadings as you go until you have arranged all the subheadings of the chapter in a way that tells the research story.

Following these steps will help you to create the Thesis map – but it’s important to remember that this is merely an aid to writing, not a plan set in stone. You can change, add and move stuff around as you write.

In our Thesis Bootcamps we ask students to just pick a spot on this map and start writing as fast as they can, not as well as they can. Does this generate perfect thesis ready text? Not necessarily, but many students say that the writing they produce at Bootcamp is clearer than the writing they did before it, when they are worrying over every word. I think the thesis map is a big part of this clarity because it keeps the focus tight.

This organising technique works best for very late stage thesis students, but it can be a way of creating order at any time in your journey and working out what you need to find out or write more about. I’ve made a downloadable cheat sheet which shows you my own Thesis map, generated by the above method so you can make one of your own.

2) Set aside a protected time to write

I’ve written so much about this, so I wont rehash it all here. If you are interested in some techniques and ideas for creating protective writing time, have a look at the following posts:

  • Another way to write 1000 words a day
  • Office or cafe?
  • Shut up and Write!
  • Detox your desk
  • A visit from the procrastination fairy

3) Feel enthusiastic about what you are writing

I think this is the ‘secret sauce’ in the 10,000 words a day recipe. Rachel Aaron did some deep analysis of her productive writing days and compared these to the occasional not-so-productive days. The days Rachel was able to write 10,000+ words were the days she was writing scenes she had been ‘dying to write’ – she called these the ‘candy bar scenes’. Days where she found it hard to muster 5000 words a day she was bored with what she was writing:

This was a duh moment for me, but it also brought up a troubling new problem. If I had scenes that were boring enough that I didn’t want to write them, then there was no way in hell anyone would want to read them. This was my novel, after all. If I didn’t love it, no one would.

In the fiction world the answer to Rachel’s dilemma was simple – make the boring scenes more interesting! Unfortunately in Thesis World this is not always possible. There will always be parts that are functional and unexciting; I call these the ‘dry toast’ sections – you need to do a lot of unproductive chewing before you can swallow.

There’s a term that describes this process in gamer culture – ‘grinding’. Grinding is being forced to perform the same action over and over again before you can ‘level up’ in the game and get more powers / weapons / armour or whatever. The level up is the pay-off.

One of the most genius ideas Liam and Peta incorporated into Bootcamp was the squeezy lego blocks. We give these out for each 5000 words written in a particular colour order: green, blue, red and gold. The blocks clip together to make a little lego ‘wall’ that the students can display at their writing station. When first presented with the idea of the blocks the students laugh, but all too soon, they are typing furiously with single minded purpose – to get the next block. We have a little ceremony every time someone gets a block, clapping them as they walk up to write their name on the board. It’s cheesy, but it works to turn writing from a source of pain to a celebration. So think about how to reward yourself for every 5000 words written.

Up for the challenge? Have a look at the testimonials on our ANU You Tube channel . I’d love to hear about other ways of doing writing marathons and what you think about this kind of ‘binge writing’.

How To Write 10,000 Words In Less Than 12 Hours

March 11, 2017 by Marc Guberti 10 Comments

I'm happy to see you around. You may want to subscribe to my blog. Thanks for visiting!

Welcome back! I am so happy to see that you have come back for more.

blogging 10,000 words

What would you do if you could write 10,000 words a day to kick you content into high gear?

Would you write five lengthy blog posts? How about an e-book? Or maybe high-converting sales copy for multiple landing pages?

Writing 10,000 words a day seems more than challenging. Writing 10,000 words a day seems nearly impossible. However, it is entirely possible. I can write 10,000 words during most weeks.

When I’m feeling really good, I can write 10,000 words in one day. At that rate, I could write 70,000 words per week, or 3,650,000 words every year.

I don’t consistently write at this pace, but when I do write 10,000 words in a day, it’s an awesome feeling. If I manage to write 10,000 words in one day, I can dedicate several more days to content marketing.

With the right work ethic, you can write 10,000 words in less than 12 hours.

Not Your Everyday Writing Goal

As I mentioned earlier, I don’t write 10,000 words every single day of the year. I do it on occasion. The problem with a goal like this is that some people will get tempted to put off their writing and go all-out on one day of the week (or, even worse, once per month).

Writing 10,000 words in one day, but forgetting about the other days of the week, will set you up for ruin. You won’t develop a habit for writing, and you’ll grind through the process instead of enjoying the journey.

If you constantly pressure yourself with this goal, you risk getting overwhelmed and despising writing all together. Before you consider writing 10,000 words a day, you need an established habit.

Writing 500 words per day is a great starting point . As you establish the habit, you can look deeper at some of the other techniques writers use . Once you merge your own habits with the analysis of other writer’s habits, you’ll discover a magic formula.

My absolute minimum goal is to write 1,500 words per day, although I usually finish most days at 2,000-3,000 words. The reason I don’t write 10,000 words a day every time is because I have other responsibilities for my brand. Once I write the content, I have to spend even more time on marketing.

This is why I rarely type 10,000 words in a given day. If you have the writing habit built-in, then you’re ready for your first 10K word day. I advise making a goal for 10K words in a day only twice per month. If you do anymore than that, you risk burnout, but if it works for you, then more power to you!

How To Get The Writing Habit Down

If you don’t have a writing habit, you need to start developing it. Five-hundred words per day is a great starting point. But how do you reach it? For some people, writing 500 words seems just as impossible.

Up to now, I’ve written exactly 500 words and didn’t even notice. It took me just a few minutes. Writing 500 words isn’t that easy, but once you’ve been writing millions of words for your blog posts and books, writing 500 words in one sitting is light work.

Let’s get back to habit development. According to science, it takes 66 days for any activity to become a habit. If you write 500 words every day for two months, you can easily write 500 words anytime.

But instead of writing 500 words per day until it becomes a habit, you need to gradually increase your word count. After a week of writing 500 words, challenge yourself to go a little higher. Don’t make a big jump in the beginning. Choose a more manageable jump such as 550 words per day.

You could even increase your word count to 510 words per day. Small increases add up, and soon enough, you will effortlessly write thousands of words on any given day. It all starts with your daily habits.

Right now, you might be creating a mental roadblock in front of your writing habit. It’s something you know you want or need to do, but for some reason, you keep putting it off.

In The Productivity Project , Chris Bailey lays out six triggers for procrastination. When you look at this list, ask yourself if any of these triggers impact you when you write:

  • Frustration
  • Unstructured
  • Lacks personal meaning
  • No intrinsic reward (it’s not fun)

You can change your results by making these unattractive triggers more attractive . For instance, if your writing lacks personal meaning, change what you write about so it aligns with your interests, which will make it easier for you to write 500 words each day (or more).

I write about topics that I care about, and enjoy writing blog posts like this because they help the people that I’m trying to reach. I don’t enjoy writing history papers, for example, because 99% of them are forced assignments necessary for the grade.

Calculate Your WPM

Let’s shift gears back to your first 10K word day. The next bit of information you’ll need is your WPM. This popular acronym stands for Words Per Minute in the writing community.

WPM is an assessment of how many words you can type in a given minute. Using your WPM, it’s easy to calculate your WPH. Just multiply your WPM by 60. For example, if you type at 40 WPM, then your WPH is 2,400 words.

With the average WPM lurking between 38-40 , the 500 word goal is easily attainable. It’s an average WPM. For most people, it will only take 12.5 minutes or less to finish writing a 500 word blog post (assuming the idea and outline are already in place).

Knowing your WPH allows you to determine how much time you need to write 10,000 words. With the average being 40 WPM (and therefore 2,400 WPH), you only need to type for 4 hours and 10 minutes to reach the 10,000 word milestone.

Of course, this is assuming you consistently type at 40 WPM from start to finish. At some points, you’ll be thinking of different ideas and possibly doing research to verify certain facts as you write your content.

In that case, it will take longer than 4 hours and 10 minutes. If you factor in everything else that can possibly happen (including idea development while writing), you’ll find yourself at the 5-5 1/2 hour range for 10,000 words in a day.

Mathematically speaking, none of this seems as scary as before, right? I could literally write 10,000 words every day of the year, but five hours of writing each day without any marketing won’t bring forth a content brand.

This entire example is based on the average WPM. You may be slightly above or below the average WPM. The only way to determine your status is to start a typing test. Typing tests only last a few minutes; what type what shows up on the screen, and you get your WPM in real-time.

The typing test lasts for a minute, and then you get to see your results.

Here’s mine:

Screen Shot 2017-03-11 at 10.42.38 AM

For this speed test, I typed 95 words per minute, which came from countless hours of practice. At this rate, I could write 5,700 words in one hour and finish writing 10,000 words in just two hours.

While this data is skewed since the words are already provided (and you’ll have to think of fresh ideas to write about), knowing your WPM gives you a rough idea of how much time it will take for you to write 10,000 words. Just tack on an extra hour to factor in time for idea generation.

On this WPM test, you’re also likely to make mistakes as I did since the words are listed one after the other instead of provided in clear sentences.

While writing takes time, editing and revising can take even longer. You can hire an editor, ask a friend for help, or edit the content yourself. With all three of these approaches, there will be typos in your work. It’s practically unavoidable unless you meticulously look it over for several months or even a year depending on how long your content is.

At that point, it could have been published in an imperfect form but attracted more people to your brand.

Combining Attention & Energy

The timing of your work is just as important as the amount of time you invest in your work. Let me share an example with you:

Writer A goes through the entire day feeling exhausted. She still feels exhausted but pulls out her computer anyway and starts typing at 10 pm.

Writer B wakes up at 6 am and starts writing almost immediately. After some typing, she takes a break, eats a healthy breakfast, and then continues typing for another hour.

Which writer seems more productive to you? I’d go with Writer B any day of the week. Both writers are committed and willing to write for several hours. The difference is that one feels charged up while the other feels exhausted.

Your body and mind are part of you, and they play a big role in your productivity. If you feel distracted, that will negatively affect your productivity. There’s no question about it.

Most people focus on time as a measurement of productivity. If you worked for six hours today, you were more productive than when you only worked for five hours, right?

That approach is all wrong.

It’s not just a matter of how much time we put into our work, more specifically, it’s about what kind of time we’re putting into our work. Are you putting quality minutes into your work, or do you struggle through the day eager to boast about how much work you did later?

Circling back to The Productivity Project , Chris Bailey also mentions biological primetime. Everyone has a biological primetime, the timeframe in which it’s easiest for us to enter our working flow. For me, my biological primetime is early in the morning. For others, their biological primetime is in the afternoon or evening.

Think about how you work to determine your biological primetime. That is when you need to write your content. During this primetime, it’s much easier to write 10,000 words a day.

To actually find your primetime, you need to track your entire day, from what tasks you completed to how often you procrastinated. If you do this for a week, you will discover your biological primetime.

Once you know your primetime, you can reallocate your tasks so your high-value tasks (i.e. writing 10K words) get distributed within your biological primetime. That way, your attention and energy are properly focused on the work that matters most when you’re at your optimal level of productivity.

Not only should you track your time to discover your biological primetime, you should also learn a lot about yourself . You’ll learn how you spend your time and how you procrastinate. You can more easily weed out the bad activities so you can focus more of your time, attention, and energy on the tasks that create the biggest impact.

Space Everything Else Out Of Your Biological Primetime

When you keep track of your time, you’ll discover which tasks you do during your biological primetime. Most people discover that they’re making a big blunder within this golden opportunity.

If you check your stats, read the news, or scroll through Facebook during these golden hours, you are restricting your potential. That is the time you should focus on writing content.

Based on how you track your time, you’ll determine different distractions that can get in your way. Email and the internet are two of the many distractions that call us when we are trying to pursue our work. Anticipate distractions like these and eliminate them.

When I write a blog post, I’m almost never on the internet. The only time I use the internet while writing a blog post is when I’m doing research. I find the right time to mention someone else’s article. All I have to do is get the link, and that’s the only time I use the internet while blogging.

Oh, and I never see my Mail icon when I’m writing blog posts. I remove that app from my dashboard and only bring it back when I’m done writing.

Plan Out Your Content In Advance

I keep score of my blog posts’ lengths as I write them. Right now, this blog post is a little over 2,000 words long. In the past, I would struggle to get past 1,000 words with a blog post like this.

I might get past 1,000 words on a post, but not by much.

I always planned out my content in advance, even when it felt like writing massive blog posts was challenging. Back then, my outline was limited. I identified the blog post title and which tactics I would discuss.

Now I use the Socratic Outline for all of my blog posts. The Socratic Outline is like a traditional outline with a twist. You act as the reader and type questions the reader would have. For each tactic I discuss, I type at least three questions that the reader might ask.

For a blog post on getting more Twitter followers, one tip would be “Interact with your audience.” Here are some questions people may have:

  • How do I interact with my audience?
  • What do I say?
  • How do I continue the conversation?

Instead of having five ideas within a blog post containing five tactics, I now multiply that total to 15 ideas within the same blog post containing the same five tactics. The more ideas you have to play with in your writing, the easier it is to write 10,000 quality words each day.

Anyone can type “very, very, very” 10,000 times. Planning out your content in advance allows you to develop the skill of writing quality words in massive quantities.

The Socratic Outline makes long-form content much easier to produce.

Change Your Environment

The tactics mentioned so far will give you the skills and mindset needed to write 10,000 words in under 12 hours. However, your environment is also a critical factor. When I first wrote this blog post, I mentioned that we all have a biological primetime. We are more productive during certain times of the day than others.

I want to take biological primetime one step further. Your biological primetime differs based on the environment you are in. At home, my biological primetime is the morning. Towards the evening, especially after 5 pm eastern, my productivity drops.

The biological primetime for my productivity at home is in the morning.

That’s why I interview most of my podcast guests in the evening. I’m not as productive at writing in the evening, but I can hold great conversations during that time.

Sometimes, when I don’t have an interview, I’ll go to a local bookstore in the evening to become more productive.

My productivity spikes in the new environment because my environment has changed. Your environment affects your biological primetime. I’m more productive at a local bookstore during the evening, and I only create content in that bookstore. I’m not doing anything else at that time.

I do all of the tech related work in the morning (create landing pages, check email sequences, etc.) and create as much content as my heart desires.

If your productivity is lagging at certain times of the day, the best solution is to change your environment. Then, you change your results.

In Conclusion

Writing 10,000 words a day is a daunting task, especially if you do it consistently. However, if you write 10,000 words two days each month, you’ll add an extra 20,000 words to your monthly total.

Those 20,000 words can provide you with several blog posts, books, and other forms of content. As you continue writing every day, you’ll have an easier time writing high quality words in massive quantities.

I love writing and wondered if I could write 4,400 meaningful words in an article. After each 500, I had to remove myself from the computer and ease my mind. Thanks for the article. It helps to make me understand writing is about loving the art. Not accomplishing a number, but loving the art of writing and drafting an article others will love reading.

Great takeaways Malina. Love for the art of writing is vital. Taking breaks every once in a while helps too. Each person is different when it comes to taking breaks but stepping out for a little bit can be a big help for creating better content.

Does this apply to academic writing? (I mean writing with referencing)

May 11, 2019 at 8:06 am

I’ve never tried this with academic writing. With academic writing, there’s also a lot more research involved. I’m sure someone can do it although I see it being much harder.

How Long is an Essay? Guidelines for Different Types of Essay

Published on January 28, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The length of an academic essay varies depending on your level and subject of study, departmental guidelines, and specific course requirements. In general, an essay is a shorter piece of writing than a research paper  or thesis .

In most cases, your assignment will include clear guidelines on the number of words or pages you are expected to write. Often this will be a range rather than an exact number (for example, 2500–3000 words, or 10–12 pages). If you’re not sure, always check with your instructor.

In this article you’ll find some general guidelines for the length of different types of essay. But keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity – focus on making a strong argument or analysis, not on hitting a specific word count.

Type of essay Average word count range Essay content
High school essay 300–1000 words In high school you are often asked to write a 5-paragraph essay, composed of an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
College admission essay 200–650 words College applications require a short personal essay to express your interests and motivations. This generally has a strict word limit.
Undergraduate college essay 1500–5000 words The length and content of essay assignments in college varies depending on the institution, department, course level, and syllabus.
Graduate school admission essay 500–1000 words Graduate school applications usually require a longer and/or detailing your academic achievements and motivations.
Graduate school essay 2500–6000 words Graduate-level assignments vary by institution and discipline, but are likely to include longer essays or research papers.

In an academic essay, the main body should always take up the most space. This is where you make your arguments, give your evidence, and develop your ideas.

The introduction should be proportional to the essay’s length. In an essay under 3000 words, the introduction is usually just one paragraph. In longer and more complex essays, you might need to lay out the background and introduce your argument over two or three paragraphs.

The conclusion of an essay is often a single paragraph, even in longer essays. It doesn’t have to summarize every step of your essay, but should tie together your main points in a concise, convincing way.

The suggested word count doesn’t only tell you how long your essay should be – it also helps you work out how much information and complexity you can fit into the given space. This should guide the development of your thesis statement , which identifies the main topic of your essay and sets the boundaries of your overall argument.

A short essay will need a focused, specific topic and a clear, straightforward line of argument. A longer essay should still be focused, but it might call for a broader approach to the topic or a more complex, ambitious argument.

As you make an outline of your essay , make sure you have a clear idea of how much evidence, detail and argumentation will be needed to support your thesis. If you find that you don’t have enough ideas to fill out the word count, or that you need more space to make a convincing case, then consider revising your thesis to be more general or more specific.

The length of the essay also influences how much time you will need to spend on editing and proofreading .

You should always aim to meet the minimum length given in your assignment. If you are struggling to reach the word count:

  • Add more evidence and examples to each paragraph to clarify or strengthen your points.
  • Make sure you have fully explained or analyzed each example, and try to develop your points in more detail.
  • Address a different aspect of your topic in a new paragraph. This might involve revising your thesis statement to make a more ambitious argument.
  • Don’t use filler. Adding unnecessary words or complicated sentences will make your essay weaker and your argument less clear.
  • Don’t fixate on an exact number. Your marker probably won’t care about 50 or 100 words – it’s more important that your argument is convincing and adequately developed for an essay of the suggested length.

Professional editors proofread and edit your paper by focusing on:

  • Academic style
  • Vague sentences
  • Style consistency

10 000 essay

In some cases, you are allowed to exceed the upper word limit by 10% – so for an assignment of 2500–3000 words, you could write an absolute maximum of 3300 words. However, the rules depend on your course and institution, so always check with your instructor if you’re unsure.

Only exceed the word count if it’s really necessary to complete your argument. Longer essays take longer to grade, so avoid annoying your marker with extra work! If you are struggling to edit down:

  • Check that every paragraph is relevant to your argument, and cut out irrelevant or out-of-place information.
  • Make sure each paragraph focuses on one point and doesn’t meander.
  • Cut out filler words and make sure each sentence is clear, concise, and related to the paragraph’s point.
  • Don’t cut anything that is necessary to the logic of your argument. If you remove a paragraph, make sure to revise your transitions and fit all your points together.
  • Don’t sacrifice the introduction or conclusion . These paragraphs are crucial to an effective essay –make sure you leave enough space to thoroughly introduce your topic and decisively wrap up your argument.

How Many Pages Is 10,000 Words?

10,000 words is 20 pages single-spaced or 40 pages double-spaced . Typical documents that are 10,000 words include college dissertations, theses, and in-depth blog posts and journal articles. It will take approximately 33 minutes to read 10,000 words .

A 10,000 word count will create about 20 pages with single spacing or 40 pages double-spaced when using normal 1-inch margins, 12 pt. Arial font, and a standard A4 (letter size) page size.

However, the number of pages will vary depending on your margins, font family, font size, whether you use multiple spaces after a period , and your paragraph spacing settings. For example, 1 page single spaced created using Arial font will generate only 0.9 pages with Calibri or Times New Roman font.

Longwriter: unleashing 10,000+ word generation from long context llms.

mm

Table Of Contents

LONGWRITER: UNLEASHING 10,000+ WORD GENERATION FROM LONG CONTEXT LLMS

Current long-context large language models (LLMs) can process inputs up to 100,000 tokens, yet they struggle to generate outputs exceeding even a modest length of 2,000 words. Controlled experiments reveal that the model’s effective generation length is inherently limited by the examples seen during supervised fine-tuning (SFT). In other words, this output limitation stems from the scarcity of long-output examples in existing SFT datasets.

Recent advancements in long-context LLMs have led to the development of models with significantly expanded memory capacities, capable of processing history exceeding 100,000 tokens in length. However, despite their ability to handle extensive inputs, current long-context LLMs struggle to generate equally lengthy outputs.

To explore this limitation, LongWriter probes the maximum output length of state-of-the-art long-context models with multiple queries that require responses of varying lengths, such as “Write a 10,000-word article on the history of the Roman Empire.” The results show that all models consistently fail to produce outputs beyond 2,000 words in length. Meanwhile, analysis of user interaction logs reveals that over 1% of user prompts explicitly request outputs exceeding this limit, highlighting a pressing need in current research to overcome this limitation.

To address this, LongWriter introduces AgentWrite , an agent-based pipeline that decomposes ultra-long generation tasks into subtasks, enabling off-the-shelf LLMs to generate coherent outputs exceeding 20,000 words. Leveraging AgentWrite, LongWriter constructs LongWriter-6k, a dataset containing 6,000 SFT data samples with output lengths ranging from 2k to 32k words. By incorporating this dataset into model training, LongWriter successfully scales the output length of existing models to over 10,000 words while maintaining output quality.

LongWriter also develops LongBench-Write, a comprehensive benchmark for evaluating ultra-long generation capabilities. The 9B parameter model, further improved through DPO, achieves state-of-the-art performance on this benchmark, surpassing even much larger proprietary models.

In this article, we will discuss the LongWriter framework, explore its architecture, and compare its performance against state-of-the-art long-context large language models. Let’s get started.

LongWriter: 10,000+ Words Generation Framework

Recent advancements in long context large language models (LLMs) have led to the creation of models with significantly increased memory capacities, capable of processing histories that exceed 100,000 tokens. Despite this ability to handle extensive inputs, current long-context LLMs struggle to generate outputs of comparable length. To investigate this limitation, LongWriter examines the maximum output length of state-of-the-art long-context models through various queries that require different response lengths, such as “Write a 10,000-word article on the history of the Roman Empire.” Based on the findings, LongWriter observes that all models consistently fail to generate outputs longer than 2,000 words. Furthermore, an analysis of user interaction logs indicates that over 1% of user prompts specifically request outputs beyond this limit, highlighting an urgent need in current research to address this issue.

10 000 essay

LongWriter's study reveals a key insight: the constraint on output length is primarily rooted in the characteristics of the Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) datasets. Specifically, LongWriter finds that a model’s maximum generation length is effectively capped by the upper limit of output lengths present in its SFT dataset, despite its exposure to much longer sequences during the pretraining phase. This finding explains the ubiquitous 2,000-word generation limit across current models, as existing SFT datasets rarely contain examples exceeding this length. Furthermore, as many datasets are distilled from state-of-the-art LLMs, they also inherit the output length limitation from their source models.

To address this limitation, LongWriter introduces AgentWrite, a novel agent-based pipeline designed to leverage off-the-shelf LLMs to automatically construct extended, coherent outputs. AgentWrite operates in two stages: First, it crafts a detailed writing plan outlining the structure and target word count for each paragraph based on the user’s input. Then, following this plan, it prompts the model to generate content for each paragraph in a sequential manner. LongWriter's experiments validate that AgentWrite can produce high-quality and coherent outputs of up to 20,000 words.

Building upon the AgentWrite pipeline, LongWriter leverages GPT-4o to generate 6,000 long-output SFT data, named LongWriter-6k, and adds this data to train existing models. Notably, LongWriter-6k successfully unlocks the model’s ability to generate well-structured outputs exceeding 10,000 words in length. To rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, LongWriter develops the LongBench-Write benchmark, which contains a diverse set of user writing instructions, with output length specifications ranging from 0-500 words, 500-2,000 words, 2,000-4,000 words, and beyond 4,000 words. Evaluation on LongBench-Write shows that LongWriter's 9B size model achieves state-of-the-art performance, even compared to larger proprietary models. LongWriter further constructs preference data and uses DPO to help the model better follow long writing instructions and generate higher quality written content, which has also been proven effective through experiments.

To summarize, LongWriter's work makes the following novel contributions:

  • Analysis of Generation Length Limits: LongWriter identifies the primary factor limiting the output length of current long-context LLMs, which is the constraint on the output length in the SFT data.
  • AgentWrite: To overcome this limitation, LongWriter proposes AgentWrite, which uses a divide-and-conquer approach with off-the-shelf LLMs to automatically construct SFT data with ultra-long outputs. Using this method, LongWriter constructs the LongWriter-6k dataset.
  • Scaling Output Window Size of Current LLMs: LongWriter incorporates the LongWriter-6k dataset into its SFT data, successfully scaling the output window size of existing models to 10,000+ words without compromising output quality. LongWriter shows that DPO further enhances the model’s long-text writing capabilities.

AgentWrite: Automatic Data Construction

To utilize off-the-shelf LLMs for automatically generating SFT data with longer outputs, LongWriter designs AgentWrite, a divide-and-conquer style agent pipeline. AgentWrite first breaks down long writing tasks into multiple subtasks, with each subtask requiring the model to write only one paragraph. The model then executes these subtasks sequentially, and LongWriter concatenates the subtask outputs to obtain the final long output. Such an approach of breaking down a complex task into multiple subtasks using LLM agents has already been applied in various fields, such as problem-solving, software development, and model evaluation. LongWriter's work is the first to explore integrating planning to enable models to complete complex long-form writing tasks. Each step of AgentWrite is introduced in detail below.

10 000 essay

Step I: Plan

Inspired by the thought process of human writers, who typically start by making an overall plan for long writing tasks, LongWriter utilizes the planning capabilities of LLMs to output such a writing outline given a writing instruction. This plan includes the main content and word count requirements for each paragraph. The prompt used by LongWriter is as follows:

“I need you to help me break down the following long-form writing instruction into multiple subtasks. Each subtask will guide the writing of one paragraph in the essay and should include the main points and word count requirements for that paragraph. The writing instruction is as follows: {User Instruction}. Please break it down in the following format, with each subtask taking up one line: Paragraph 1 – Main Point: [Describe the main point of the paragraph, in detail] – Word Count: [Word count requirement, e.g., 400 words] Paragraph 2 – Main Point: [Describe the main point of the paragraph, in detail] – Word Count: [Word count requirement, e.g. 1000 words]. Make sure that each subtask is clear and specific, and that all subtasks cover the entire content of the writing instruction. Do not split the subtasks too finely; each subtask’s paragraph should be no less than 200 words and no more than 1000 words. Do not output any other content.”

Step II: Write

After obtaining the writing plan from Step I, LongWriter calls the LLM serially to complete each subtask, generating the writing content section by section. To ensure the coherence of the output, when LongWriter calls the model to generate the n-th section, the previously generated n−1 sections are also input, allowing the model to continue writing the next section based on the existing writing history. Although this serial manner prevents parallel calls to the model to complete multiple subtasks simultaneously, and the input length becomes longer, LongWriter shows in validation that the overall coherence and quality of the writing obtained this way are far superior to the output generated in parallel. The prompt in use by LongWriter is:

“You are an excellent writing assistant. I will give you an original writing instruction and my planned writing steps. I will also provide you with the text I have already written. Please help me continue writing the next paragraph based on the writing instruction, writing steps, and the already written text.

Writing instruction: {User Instruction} Writing steps: {The writing plan generated in Step I} Already written text: {Previous generated (n-1) paragraphs}

Please integrate the original writing instruction, writing steps, and the already written text, and now continue writing {The plan for the n-th paragraph, i.e., the n-th line in the writing plan}.”

LongWriter tests the generation length and quality of the proposed AgentWrite method on two long-form writing datasets. The first one, LongWrite-Ruler, is used to measure exactly how long of an output the method can provide. The second, LongBench-Write, is mainly used to evaluate how well the model-generated content aligns with user instructions in terms of length and writing quality.

LongBench-Write : To evaluate the model’s performance on a more diverse range of long-form writing instructions, LongWriter collects 120 varied user writing prompts, with 60 in Chinese and 60 in English. To better assess whether the model’s output length meets user requirements, LongWriter ensures that all these instructions include explicit word count requirements. These instructions are divided into four subsets based on the word count requirements: 0-500 words, 500-2,000 words, 2,000-4,000 words, and over 4,000 words. Additionally, the instructions are categorized into seven types based on the output type: Literature and Creative Writing, Academic and Monograph, Popular Science, Functional Writing, News Report, Community Forum, and Education and Training.

During evaluation, LongWriter adopts two metrics: one for scoring the output length and another for scoring the output quality. The model’s output length is scored based on how close it is to the requirements specified in the instructions. For output quality, LongWriter uses the LLM-as-a-judge approach, selecting the state-of-the-art GPT-4o model to score the output across six dimensions: Relevance, Accuracy, Coherence, Clarity, Breadth and Depth, and Reading Experience. The final score is computed by averaging the length score and the quality score.

Validation results : LongWriter presents the output length measurement on LongWrite-Ruler and finds that AgentWrite successfully extends the output length of GPT-4o from a maximum of 2k words to approximately 20k words. LongWriter also assesses both the output quality and adherence to the required output length on LongBench-Write, showing that GPT-4o can successfully complete tasks with outputs under 2,000 words in length when evaluating AgentWrite’s performance.

Supervised Fine-Tuning

Longwriter conducts training based on two of the latest open-source models, namely glm-4-9b and llama-3.1-8b. both of these are base models and support a context window of up to 128k tokens, making them naturally suitable for training on long outputs. to make the training more efficient, longwriter adopts packing training with loss weighting. the training on the two models results in two models: longwriter-9b (abbreviated for glm-4-9b-longwriter) and longwriter-8b (abbreviated for llama-3.1-8b-longwriter)..

At the same time, LongWriter notices that if the loss is averaged by sequence, i.e., taking the mean of each sequence’s average loss within a batch, the contribution of each target token to the loss in long output data would be significantly less than those with shorter outputs. In LongWriter's experiments, it is also found that this leads to suboptimal model performance on tasks with long outputs. Therefore, LongWriter chooses a loss weighting strategy that averages the loss by token, where the loss is computed as the mean of losses across all target tokens within that batch.

All models are trained using a node with 8xH800 80G GPUs and DeepSpeed+ZeRO3+CPU offloading. LongWriter uses a batch size of 8, a learning rate of 1e-5, and a packing length of 32k. The models are trained for 4 epochs, which takes approximately 2,500-3,000 steps.

Alignment (DPO)

To further improve the model’s output quality and enhance its ability to follow length constraints in instructions, LongWriter performs direct preference optimization (DPO) on the supervised fine-tuned LongWriter-9B model. The DPO data comes from GLM-4’s chat DPO data (approximately 50k entries). Additionally, LongWriter constructs 4k pairs of data specifically targeting long-form writing instructions. For each writing instruction, LongWriter samples 4 outputs from LongWriter-9B and scores these outputs following a specific method. A length-following score is also combined as computed. The highest-scoring output is then selected as the positive sample, and one of the remaining three outputs is randomly chosen as the negative sample.

The resulting model, LongWriter-9B-DPO, is trained for 250 steps on the above data mixture. LongWriter follows a specific recipe for DPO training.

LongWriter: Experiments and Results

LongWriter evaluates 4 proprietary models and 5 open-source models on LongBench-Write, along with the trained LongWriter models. To the best of LongWriter's knowledge, Suri-IORPO is the only prior model that is also aligned for long-form text generation. It is trained based on Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.2 using LoRA. Consistent with the evaluation setup on LongWrite-Ruler, LongWriter sets the output temperature to 0.5 and configures the model’s generation max tokens parameter to the maximum allowed by its API call. For open-source models, it is set to 32,768.

Most previous models are unable to meet the length requirement of over 2,000 words, while LongWriter models consistently provide longer and richer responses to such prompts.

Observing the output length score SlS_lSl for prompts in each required length range, LongWriter finds that previous models generally perform poorly (scoring below 70) on prompts in the [2k, 4k) range, with only Claude 3.5 Sonnet achieving a decent score. For prompts in the [4k, 20k) range, almost all previous models are completely unable to reach the target output length, even scoring 0 (meaning all output lengths are less than one-third of the required length). By adding training data from LongWriter-6k, LongWriter's trained model can effectively reach the required output length while maintaining good quality, as suggested by the scores in the [2k, 20k) range and the scatter plots.

DPO effectively improves both the model’s output quality and its ability to follow length requirements in long generation.

By comparing the scores of LongWriter-9B and LongWriter9B-DPO, we find that DPO significantly improves both Sl (+4%) and Sq (+3%) scores, and the improvement is consistent across all ranges. This shows that in long generation scenario, DPO still helps to improve the model’s output quality and can better align the model’s output length with 8 Preprint Figure 7: Cumulative average NLL loss of GLM4-9B and Llama-3.1-8B at different positions of LongWriter models’ outputs. Figure 8: LongWrite-Ruler test results of LongWriter models, showing their maximum generation lengths between 10k-20k words. the requested length. The latter conclusion has also been recently observed in Yuan et al. (2024) in shorter generations. We also manually annotate pairwise wins and losses for GPT-4o and three longwriter models on their outputs in LongBench-Write and visualize the results in Figure 9. We can see that humans prefer the DPO-trained model over LongWriter-9B in 58% of the cases. Moreover, despite having fewer parameters, LongWriter-9B-DPO achieves a tie with GPT-4o.

10 000 essay

The output length limit of the LongWriter models is extended to between 10k and 20k words, while more data with long outputs is required to support even longer outputs.

Following the LongWrite-Ruler tes,we also present the LongWrite-Ruler test results of LongWriter models. The results suggest that their maximum generation lengths are between 10k-20k words. The lack of SFT data with longer outputs is likely the primary reason preventing the model from achieving longer output lengths.

Final Thoughts

In this work, we have talked about LongWriter, an agent-based pipeline that decomposes ultra-long generation tasks into subtasks, identifies a 2,000-word generation limit for current LLMs and proposes increasing their output window size by adding long-output data during alignment. To automatically construct long-output data, LongWriter develops AgentWrite, an agent-based pipeline that uses off-the-shelf LLMs to create extended, coherent outputs. LongWriter successfully scales the output window size of current LLMs to over 10,000 words with the constructed LongWriter-6k. Extensive ablation studies on the training data demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. For future work, LongWriter suggests the following three directions: 1. Expand the AgentWrite framework to construct data with longer outputs to further extend LLMs’ output window size. 2. Refine the AgentWrite framework to achieve higher quality long-output data. 3. Longer model outputs bring challenges to inference efficiency. Several methods have been proposed to improve inference efficiency. It is worth investigating how these methods can ensure improved model efficiency without compromising generation quality.
