Research at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) is grounded in the belief that many of the key challenges and opportunities of our era require cooperation among the arts, humanities, and sciences and among the academy, industry, civil society and the public sector.

Unprecedented demands are affecting our cities and infrastructure, the environment, and our society as a whole. Today’s complex issues require an unconventional but cooperative approach that can transcend disciplines and produce change at all levels—not only for the spaces in which we live, but also for our approach to art, technology, business, education, and more. Our innovations are producing practical solutions to quandaries in urbanization, environment and technology – from geographic information systems to designing the future of cities. We hope you will visit the individual webpages of our research units to learn about the ambitious and rapidly expanding research agenda of the GSD and its transformative power.

Research and Teaching

At the GSD, research and teaching go hand in hand. The School’s collective research initiatives begin with the individual endeavors of faculty and students and are strongly integrated in our pedagogical mission. We supplement our core design pedagogy with research that addresses global issues, both in traditional building fields and entrepreneurial ventures. We reach beyond the limits of our core disciplines to collaborate across sectors, including business, technology, the arts, health, public policy, and more. In this way, the GSD synthesizes research, teaching and practice in a collaborative, holistic approach that empowers our community to make a difference around the world.

The GSD builds on a long tradition of ground-breaking innovations. Since its foundation in 1936, the GSD has coupled its excellent professional training with in-depth research activity across a range of fields from history and theory, to technology, environment and design:

  • At the GSD’s Laboratory for Computer Graphics, the first computer mapping systems were developed and evolved into geographic information systems.
  • In the 1960s, the Joint Center for Urban Studies with MIT brought together urban planners, architects and social scientists to think through the future of cities and proposed the designs for many localities, including Ciudad Guyana in Venezuela.
  • A Synthesis of Form, Christopher Alexander’s seminal dissertation, was written at the GSD.
  • Eduard Sekler’s work with the UNESCO on preservation in Nepal has provided a template for preservation of public spaces across the world.

Continuing with this tradition, our Research Centers, Design Labs, Programs and Initiatives are creating a critical mass of inquiry and research. Unique in their focus, each builds ties with experts in their fields, with implications for policy, practice, and society at large. This is done across disciplines, both within the University and with external institutions, organizations, and individuals.

Our goal is to prepare the next generation of design leaders who will address increasingly complex issues around the world and the School’s research platform is providing our faculty and students with a global forum to make transformative contributions through design, from insights in ecological urbanism and city-making to advancements in representation and the future of technology.  By focusing our attention, intellect, resources and mission through the lens of research at the GSD, we aim to improve the human experience, and improve it by design.

How can you choose the best grad school for you?

A good answer to this question looks to your personal and professional goals. Certain professions will require you to earn an advanced degree. In other cases, an advanced degree can make you eligible for leadership roles and higher pay. For instance, the best graduate schools for education can improve your earnings as a teacher, make you eligible for tenure, or help you meet the basic threshold for continued employment. On the other hand, the best graduate schools for business can simply make you a more competitive candidate for job openings and management roles.

The best grad school for you should have a stellar reputation and employ highly influential professors across the board and especially in your area of study. Indeed, much exciting academic work these days is cross-disciplinary, and for such work to flourish it helps to be at a school that is strong across discipines. The following list is composed of graduate schools, both private and public. We’ve identified 1,682 graduate schools in the US . In order to be included in this list of best graduate schools must be fully accredited non-profit institutions that offer advanced degrees and put a premium on research.

Student Submitted Questions on the Best Graduate Schools

Nate asks , “What are the average class sizes and student-to-faculty ratios in the top-ranked graduate programs?”

Dr. Jed Macosko’s answer: Average class sizes in the top graduate programs tend to range between 10 and 20 students in size. In seminar-style courses and advanced research classes, there is a potential for the classes to be even smaller. In regards to student-to-faculty ratios, in highly ranked programs ratios like 10:1 or even lower are common.

Minnie asks , “How diverse and inclusive are top graduate programs?”

Dr. James Barham’s answer: The diversity and inclusivity of programs will vary, but many of the top graduate schools are known for being diverse and attracting large international student populations. These institutions also typically feature support programs that are aimed to represent and back underrepresented groups.

The Graduate School welcomes the newest cohort of the FUSE Program .

FUSE Cohort 2024-2026

Through the program, Facilitating Underrepresented Student Experiences (FUSE) , the UGA Graduate School affirms its commitment to recruit, retain, and graduate historically underserved students. Since 2008, UGA has fostered partnerships with minority-serving institutions to enhance the recruitment and transition of undergraduate students as they learn about applying to graduate school and enroll as graduate students.  Prospective UGA graduate students who earned undergraduate degrees from one of UGA’s partner institutions are eligible to participate.

The UGA Graduate School provides programming, support, and resources for these students from their application to UGA through graduation. Once enrolled, cohort participants receive an assistantship, attend professional development and networking programs, are paired with a mentor, and find strong support from earlier cohort members. To date, the FUSE Program has enrolled 112 students.

Meet Michael Chin, the New Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

Lessons learned from his time as interim dean guide his vision for the school’s future

Michael T. Chin, a renowned expert in virology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and cardiology, has been named the dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at Tufts University School of Medicine . Chin has been the school’s dean  ad interim  since July 2023 and director of the MD/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program since 2020 .

His appointment builds on a distinguished career as a respected researcher, professor, and physician. At Tufts Medicine, Chin is the research director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center and Research Institute in the CardioVascular Center , an investigator in the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI), as well as a member of the Division of Cardiology .

Chin’s research focuses on understanding the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease and how it’s affected by regulation of gene expression, with a goal of developing therapeutic agents and treatments for cardiovascular diseases. The Chin Lab is working on an enzyme replacement therapy for a genetic cardiomyopathy disorder called Barth syndrome, and identifying molecular pathways involved in the development of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in both human tissue and mouse models.

In a conversation with  Tufts Now , Chin shared what he sees as the strengths of the school as well as opportunities for growth, along with a message for current and future students.

Tufts Now : What are some opportunities you would like to pursue at the school as dean?

Michael T. Chin: I'm looking forward to enhancing the student experience by providing opportunities for professional development that generally haven't existed in traditional graduate student education. While we're very good at training graduate students to be scientists, we don't necessarily give them the skill set every young professional needs to have, such as resilience, emotional intelligence, and team leadership. We can fill that gap in education.

I'm also looking forward to improving the training experience by developing new training grants in thematic areas and new Ph.D. programs to meet the needs of the future biomedical workforce.

I had the opportunity to brainstorm with other educators across the country about optimal ways to train and educate biomedical scientists, which has inspired some of our plan for more professional development. I also saw a large need to find additional resources to fund the education of students in the biomedical enterprise.

We need to reimagine how education is provided, understand the needs of the modern biomedical workforce, and develop programs that meet those needs. One such example could be an experiential Ph.D. that someone could work toward within the constraints of their existing employment. It’s an unmet need and a potential educational niche that Tufts is uniquely situated to provide.

What are some of the strengths of GSBS that you want to sustain? What do you see as the strong points of the school?

The greatest strength of GSBS is its sense of community. The school is relatively un-siloed, and our students enroll in multidisciplinary programs that span many departments. The programs are supported by faculty from the basic sciences and the medical center, as well. This type of learning facilitates intellectual diversity and more sharing of ideas.

The students and the faculty take ownership of this community. In fact, when we talk with alumni about what makes Tufts special, they often say the community. They pull together for fundraising, like with the annual GSBS Relays where all the students have friendly competitions to raise money for the Student Enrichment Fund. Obviously, I'd like to sustain and continue to promote that wonderful atmosphere.

What GSBS research highlights stand out to you?

We've been phenomenally successful in molecular microbiology research, particularly drug and antibiotic resistance. We're also particularly strong in Lyme disease and tuberculosis research, and in my specialty, which is researching cardiovascular disease. In partnership with MCRI and the Pilar Alcaide Lab , we are exploring mechanisms of heart failure, or cardiac hypertrophy immune function in the heart and vasculature.

GSBS also has tremendous assets in neuroscience, with the Chris Dulla Lab studying epilepsy and traumatic brain injury, and the Jamie Maguire Lab ’s work on neurosteroids and mood disorders. I could go on and on. It’s easy to be dean when we have so much scientific excellence.

And what should we know about your own research?

About barth syndrome.

Barth syndrome is a rare X-linked disorder resulting from mutation in the tafazzin gene, which encodes an enzyme that remodels cardiopin to a form that is important for normal mitochondrial structure and function. Patients with this disorder develop cardiomyopathy in childhood accompanied by skeletal myopathy and cyclic neutropenia. Patients rarely survive beyond young adulthood and there are no efficacious therapies. Dr. Chin’s lab is focused on developing a recombinant enzyme replacement therapy that uses cell penetrating peptides to enter the cell, localize to mitochondria, and correct the mitochondrial defects associated with this disorder.

I'm interested in the molecular biology of the cardiovascular system, specifically genetics and genomics and how they influence inherited disorders. Some of the things I'm doing are practical, like developing targeted enzyme and gene therapies for an inherited cardiomyopathy called Barth syndrome. I’m also investigating the genetics and genomics of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In both diseases, I'm trying to find new druggable targets so we can develop new therapies, including protein- or gene-based therapies.

I was recently at the Barth Syndrome Foundation ’s International Scientific, Medical, and Family Conference. One of the things that’s different about this conference is that families of patients with Barth syndrome attend because they're very much invested in the research and the potential for development of cures. I was flattered because the families flagged my work on developing an enzyme replacement therapy as something that they wanted to hear more about. So, in addition to giving my scientific talk, I met with individuals from various families, including patients, in a “speed dating” format, where I and other researchers had 10 minutes to talk before moving to the next table. I gave a short pitch in layman’s terms about what I'm doing to develop enzyme replacement and gene therapy—how it works, how it might affect them, and how my lab is working very hard to improve their lives. We, as scientists, have to be ambassadors to the lay public to explain the importance of what we do. My hope is that this work might be impactful within their lifetimes.

What does it mean to you personally to be named the permanent dean of the GSBS?

It means that I have been given a great honor and a great responsibility. I’m in this role to be of service first to the students of GSBS, and to the faculty. My role as the dean is to be their advocate and their leader and to try and bring us all in a direction where both the school and the individuals will benefit. Not everybody is asked to take on this opportunity, and it is a privilege and an opportunity. I have no illusions about the challenges ahead because I think there are many challenges facing higher education, particularly in the biomedical sciences. But as I told my colleagues, I will give it my best.

Clearly, the students of GSBS are important to you. Is there anything you’d like to say to them on this occasion?

I see you all, and I've lived a lot of your experiences. For many of our students who come from underrepresented backgrounds, I get it, I've lived it, and I firmly agree with the university’s pursuit of inclusive excellence.

My own origins are fairly humble. I'm the only scientist in my family and one of two physicians. I have deep roots in Boston, even though I'm from New York. My great-grandfather used to live in Boston's Chinatown, and he worked in restaurants as an immigrant, not speaking English. It puts things in perspective that my great-grandfather walked these streets 100 years ago. Could he ever have imagined that one day I'd be the dean of a school at a major university?

Outside of academia, what are two things that people might be interested to learn about you?

I tend to talk too much, so maybe everybody knows everything about me by now. But I was a competitive fencer in college and as an adult. I won some national medals, and I was ranked reasonably highly in my age group for a while. I retired a few years ago, because my joints couldn't keep up with me, but I still enjoy the sport as a spectator. I tuned in to watch the recent Olympics!

I also enjoy fishing, mostly catch and release. I can think a lot about work and grants while walking around the beach carrying a fishing rod. It’s relaxing and regenerating, particularly when the weather is nice. I can catch a wonderful fish and then release it back for another day. I call it resilience training for the fish, because I feel I'm training them to recognize artificial lures, so they can learn from it and be wiser next time.

Brancati and McDonnell Earn IALS Translational Graduate Research Assistantships

Ross Brancati (left) and Paul McDonnell

Kinesiology doctoral candidates Ross Brancati and Paul McDonnell have been selected for translational graduate research assistantships by the UMass Amherst Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS). The one-year assistantships are awarded to domestic or international graduate students for translational research projects, which IALS defines as work that aims to inform or to develop product candidates, technologies, and services that deliver benefits to human health and well-being.

Brancati, who works in Professor of Kinesiology Katherine Boyer's Musculoskeletal & Orthopedic Biomechanics Lab, was selected as part of the initial Spring 2024-Fall 2024 cohort. During his undergraduate years where he studied biomedical engineering, he had the opportunity to work with motion capture equipment for human movement analysis, sparking his initial interest in this field. As he pursued his master’s degree, he worked in a motion capture lab investigating consequences of movement due to ACL injury, which led to his first full-time position and allowed him to continue this research. This aligned with his passion for working with athletes and providing information to impact rehabilitation. Brancati’s research focuses on identifying subgroups of individuals with running injuries and developing machine learning models that can classify subgroups with wearable sensor data. This approach could provide very valuable information to clinicians for designing more targeted and effective treatments, leading to improved patient outcomes.

McDonnell, a member of the Movement Neuroscience Lab directed by Assistant Professor of Kinesiology Douglas Martini, was recently selected for a Fall 2024-Summer 2025 assistantship, the second IALS assistantship cohort. His interest in the neural control of movement originated during his undergraduate program in biology and physical education, and deepened during his master’s degree, where he was a research assistant in a neurorehabilitation lab, employing transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate neural mechanisms behind the “cross-education” phenomenon. A full-time research assistantship followed in a balance neuroscience lab investigating sensory reweighting for postural control in people with Parkinson’s Disease. At UMass, McDonnell’s research focuses on cortical mechanisms underlying mobility impairment in older adult fallers. This work holds potential to uncover novel neuroimaging biomarkers for earlier identification of older adults transitioning to a higher fall risk, which is paramount to prevent falls.

14 sets of twins and one set of triplets graduate from the same high school class

research on graduate schools

The  graduating class  at this Florida high school will make you do a double — and triple — take.

Fourteen sets of  twins  and one set of triplets gradua t ed June 5 from Cooper City High School in Cooper City, Florida, about 40 minutes outside of Miami.

The group comprised about 6% of the 543 graduates.

“It was very special as they would come across the stage; I would shake their hand and give one a diploma, and then the second one would come over to do the same thing,” Vera Perkovic, the school’s principal, tells TODAY.com.

“It kind of just symbolized they’re their own person, but also, they have been together all these years as twins,” she adds.

Among the graduates are two sets of identical twins and 12 sets of fraternal twins,  NBC 6, our South Florida station, reported .

Twins Jocelyn and Gabrielle Reed.

Gabrielle and Jocelyn Reed are one such set of identical twins.

“It was a great moment. It was also just bizarre because you raise twins, and everything is two at once,” Gabrielle and Jocelyn’s father, Aaron Reed, tells TODAY.com. “So, on some levels, it was twice as exciting, but it was also twice as chaotic and overwhelming.”

The sisters have attended school together since pre-K. Come August, they will go their separate ways for college.

Gabrielle is headed to Cornell University, while Jocelyn will attend Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Twins Jocelyn and Gabrielle Reed.

“I’m just really excited to go somewhere separate and be on my own,” Gabrielle says. “Everywhere I go, I’m lumped together with her and not really seen as my own person, so I’m really excited to be able to have my own experiences.”

As the editor of Cooper City High School’s yearbook, Jocelyn was always aware of the number of twins in her class, but it wasn’t until the group was in a room together that she realized just how special it is to have that many multiples.

“When you’re a twin, people treat you as a spectacle,” Jocelyn said. “So, it was crazy to see that it’s so common and that there are so many people that are also twins.”

Broward County Public Schools believes the graduates have set a county record as most sets of twins to simultaneously graduate from one school.

Some of the students even created a slogan to commemorate their unique graduating class: “Twice as nice and triple the fun.”

Amanda is an editorial intern at TODAY.com and was born and raised in Miami, Florida.
