Whether you're a school student or a college student, homework is an essential part of the learning process. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps that can help you get your homework done, the only trouble is knowing which apps are best to download. If you're a student, read on to take a look at some of the best homework apps for Android and iPhone.

Brainly homework help mobile app Search

Do you need help with math, biology, history, or physics? Brainly is the homework app for you. Using the app for homework help is as straightforward as taking a photo, typing, or voice searching the question or equation and then waiting for an answer.

All the answers come from Brainly's online community of other students as well as experts from around the world. However, if you aren't happy with the answers, you also have the option to ask the app's AI tutor, Ginny.

Moreover, you can assist other students with their own homework by answering their questions. Which questions you help out with can be filtered according to school level and subject.

2. Photomath

photomath math homework helper mobile app solving steps

Unlike Brainly, the Photomath app is a pretty straightforward homework app and has one single core focus—math. Photomath is truly one of the best apps to help you solve math problems , and it works similarly in that you merely have to scan the problem with your phone and the app gives you instant answers.

But Photomath doesn't stop there, the app actually breaks down the entire equation and gives you a step-by-step explanation of how it came to the solution. What's more, you can tap on each step to see an even more detailed animated lesson with voice instructions.

In addition, the Photomath app includes a built-in calculator where you can type the question out instead of snapping a photo.

3. Chegg Study

Chegg study homework helper mobile app

Chegg Study is an app that provides many different homework and study tools on various subjects. If you have a basic question, you can either snap a photo, upload an image, or type it out. On the other hand, you can just scan the barcode of the textbook you're using with your mobile phone to find answers.

Another tool Chegg Study includes is over 500 million free flashcards on subjects like astronomy, business, chemistry, and psychology. Alternatively, you can use the app to create your own set of flashcards.

But the Chegg Study app also comes in handy if you need help with a specific course. All you have to do is add the course and the app provides everything you need to ace it, like expert Q&A and exam prep. Alternatively, there are a selection of Chegg alternatives you can try , too.

4. Course Hero

Course Hero homework helper mobile app solution

To get help with your homework, all you have to do is ask Course Hero. And asking is super simple. You can type in your question, snap a picture, or upload a document. If you're looking for assistance with math homework, there's even a dedicated Scan to Calculate option.

Using the Course Hero app, you can keep a library of all your homework documents and any other learning materials you need if you're completing a course.

What's more, Course Hero is available in your web browser if you need access to AI-powered homework assistance and a range of study resources while using your laptop or PC.

5. Bartleby

Bartleby homework helper mobile app textbooks

The Bartley app can solve your math homework problems in a single snap. Yet possibly the best part is the 24/7 homework help from actual tutors. Simply select the subject, type out the question, and add an optional image.

Once you've sent in your question, all you have to do is wait and pretty soon you'll get assistance from an expert with Masters or PhDs. However, there is another way to get homework help and that's by using the Search tab.

Type in what you're looking for, and you can filter through the solutions according to the solution type or subject. Alternatively, you can search for homework help based on the textbooks you're using.

6. ScanSolve

Scansolve AI homework helper mobile app explanation

Quick, uncomplicated, and to the point is what you can expect from this homework app. ScanSolve uses AI to answer your questions and covers subjects like math, English, and science.

As with many of the other apps on this list, using ScanSolve is as easy as taking a picture of the questions you are struggling with. From there, you can either read the explanation of the results or chat with the AI tutor if you're unsure of the answer you received.

Download: ScanSolve for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

7. Homework.ai

Homework.ai AI homework helper mobile app

The Homework.ai app offers homework help using the power of artificial intelligence. Some of the subjects the app covers include art, biology, computer science, math, music, and a selection of languages like Spanish and German.

To get started, choose a subject, type out or audio record your question, and AI does the rest. For a quicker solution, you can simply scan the question using your mobile phone. Keep in mind that everything in the app is generated by AI, so you might need to double-check the answers if you're not 100% sure.

Along with answering your basic homework questions, Homework.ai can help you with language translation, rewriting text, and summarizing text.

8. Zookal Study

Zookal Study mobile app home

The best bit is that you won't have to wait hours for solutions to your questions—Zookal promises to deliver in as little as 20 minutes. Zookal keeps track of all your questions and answers, and you have access to a library of online solutions on the Zookal website.

The app centers on one main tool, Ask a Question, which is where you can type out or snap a picture of your homework question. Additionally, Zookal is a study app you can use in any browser with an impressive selection of online tools ranging from test prep and textbooks to flashcards and videos.

We know that homework can be a real drag. It’s time-consuming, and can be difficult to complete all on your own. So, what can you do if you’re struggling?

You might try looking online or in the app store! If you’ve already looked around you probably know that there are tons of homework sites for students and homework apps out there that all say they can help you improve your grades and pass your classes. But, can you trust them? And what are the best apps for homework help?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help apps–free and paid . We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help apps
  • The cost of homework help apps
  • The five best apps for homework help
  • The pros and cons of using apps that help you with homework
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using apps that help you with homework
  • Tips for getting the most out of homework sites for students

So let’s jump in!

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

body-red-x-false-stop

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

body-five-star-best-number-one

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

But now, children of all ages can receive the help they need with their computer or mobile device. There’s nothing wrong with apps that explain concepts to kids in a way for them to not just complete their homework but understand what they’re learning too.

Scan your homework or documents with iPhone or iPad

By Andrew Myrick 0 comments Last updated March 28, 2020

When working or learning remotely, you may need to periodically scan homework or documents to your classmates, teachers, colleagues, or bosses. Or, you may find yourself needing to manually sign and add your signature to official documents. The good news is that you don’t need a scanner! Apple offers a few ways to scan almost anything using just your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and a few of the native iOS or iPadOS apps.

This article focuses on just how to scan any documents or homework on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using the Notes app or the Files app. And it’s pretty straightforward!

With more and more people working or learning from home often with children taking classes from home, you may run into some new problems. These range from getting your desk set up properly to be more efficient while making sure the children have access to everything that is needed.

One instance that may arise is the need to scan your homework or documents and share them with a classmate, teacher, co-worker, boss, or others. Instead of needing to download a third-party app, Apple turned both the Notes and Files app into productivity powerhouse applications where you can do just about everything you need.

Here’s how you can use the Notes app to scan homework or documents.

Here’s how you can use the files app to scan homework or documents., there are also some great third-party scanning apps on the app store, drop us a line, use the notes app to scan your homework or documents.

Although the Notes app has this document scanning feature, you may not know where exactly how or where to find it. Apple has updated the interface of the Notes app itself to give the users easier access.

Open Notes to scan your homework or documents

  • Open the Notes app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap the  New Note (+)  button.
  • On the toolbar above the keyboard, tap the Camera icon.
  • Select  Scan Documents

From here, you’ll need to line up the document as best as you can, and then tap the shutter button in the camera view. This will snap a quick picture of the document, and then you are given a few options.

The Notes app actually makes it possible for you to adjust the frame of the scan, so you don’t have a bunch of extra stuff in the background. Then at the bottom, there are options to Retake or  Keep Scan .

End result Scan Your Homework or Documents

If you keep the scan, it’s moved to the bottom left corner, and the camera view reappears in the event that you have multiple scans to make. Once all the pictures have been taken, tap the  Save button in the bottom right-hand corner. This adds the scan to the newly-created note and you can then add any other text, charts, or checklists to the Note itself.

Use the Files app to scan your homework or documents

The Files app is also extremely useful and powerful, and you can also scan documents and more directly from the app.

Scan your homework or documents in Files

  • Open the Files app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • From the Browse screen, tap the icon in the top right-hand corner (circle with three dots).
  • Tap  Scan Documents  from the menu that appears.
  • When the viewfinder appears, line the document up and then tap the Shutter button at the bottom.
  • The scanning editor will then appear, giving you the ability to better lineup the edges of the scan.
  • After tapping Done, you can continue to scan more documents, or just tap the  Save button to save the scan.

Once you have scanned the document in the Files app, you will be asked to select the folder that you wish for it to be saved to. Simply go through the file manager, find the right folder (or create a new one), and tap  Save in the upper right-hand corner.

End Result Files Scan your Homework or Documents

The biggest benefit to this is being able to not only save it to your iCloud Drive instead of just inside of a note.

But if you have already logged into third-party cloud storage solutions like Google Drive or OneDrive, then you can choose folders in those services to save the scanned documents.

In the event that you are sharing this with your teacher or business associate, being able to choose a shared folder is extremely convenient.

Adobe Scan on iOS

Although using the Notes and Files app is great, enough can’t be said for the App Store. There is a slew of applications available that can help you scan documents. Some of these may even be quicker than using Apple’s solution.

Adobe Scan (Free w/ in-app purchases) –  Adobe Scan allows you to scan anything and turn it into a PDF instantly. But the app takes advantage of “Advanced Image Technology” to detect borders, sharpen the image, and recognize text. Once scanned, Scan lets you search the content if you need to find something specific.

Office Lens (Free) –  Instead of automatically determining what you are scanning, Office Lens offers options at the bottom of its scanner. These options include the ability to scan a Whiteboard, Business Card, Document, or just take a photo. And then the scan can be saved to OneDrive or your other favorite Cloud Storage solution.

Evernote Scannable (Free) –  The benefit of Evernote Scannable is its integration with Evernote. Scan a document, and export it directly into Evernote, or send it to colleagues or your teacher via email or text. And Scannable will automatically crop anything you scan, so that you aren’t left with extra space behind documents.

Scanbot (Free w/ in-app purchases) –  Scanbot may one of the more popular options on the App Store thanks to its versatility. You’ll get the standard document/PDF scanning features, but you can use Scanbot to send the document via Fax and more. The app even recognizes QR codes and offers password protection for your PDFs.

Wrapping it up

As a quick note, you’ll see a few controls at the top of the viewfinder when you are scanning. This toolbar gives you the ability to turn flash on or off, adjust the color of the scan, and  Auto . If your phone is set to  Auto , then your iPhone will automatically scan the document as soon as it’s recognized. But if this is something you would rather not have, just tap the Auto button and it will switch to Manual.

The best part about all of this is that it works with either the iPhone or the iPad. So you are not limited to what device you use to scan these and send them off.

Let us know how you manage to share your homework or work with your classmates, teachers, and colleagues.

If you have any questions, let us know in the comments below and we’ll be sure to help out!

RCS Messaging for iPhone: Enable It on the iOS 18 Beta Today

Here's how to make your iPhone play nice with the Android devices in your life.

Blue and green text bubbles

Apple released the third public beta for iOS 18 on Aug. 6, about two months after the tech giant announced the software at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The beta brings many new features to your iPhone, including text effects in Messages and more ways to personalize your lock screen . But one new sought-after feature is Rich Communication Services support in Messages.

CNET Tips_Tech

While Apple barely mentioned RCS messaging at its WWDC presentation, it's still set to land on your iPhone with iOS 18 this fall. With RCS messaging, you'll be able to enjoy features like typing indicators and the "Delivered" status message while messaging Android users. It'll also help ensure high-quality videos and pictures are sent when texting between iPhone and Android devices.

Read more: An Expert's Guide to the iOS 18 Betas

I recommend downloading a beta on something other than your primary device. Since this isn't the final version of iOS 18, the update might be buggy and battery life may be short, and it's best to keep those troubles on a secondary device. I downloaded the beta to my old iPhone XR to keep any issues away from my iPhone 14 Pro.

Note that the beta isn't the final version of iOS 18, so more features could land on your iPhone when iOS 18 is released. Apple said iOS 18 would be released to the public this fall, but there's no definitive date yet.

If you're an early iOS 18 adopter, here's how to check if your carrier supports RCS and how to make sure it's enabled on your iPhone. And if you want to download the iOS 18 betas , here's how.

Read more:  Apple's RCS Texting Previews All New Features

Will my carrier support RCS messaging?

Most carriers support RCS, but not all. For example, Verizon , AT&T and T-Mobile all support RCS on iPhones running iOS 18. If you have another carrier you might not be able to use this feature, but there's an easy way to check.

1. Open Settings . 2. Tap General . 3. Tap About . 4. Tap Carrier .

When you tap Carrier, it will change to IMS Status and show messaging support details to the right. For example, if your carrier supports RCS, you'll see Voice, SMS & RCS . If your carrier doesn't support RCS, you'll see Voice & SMS .

How to enable or disable RCS on your iPhone

Apple RCS texting

Apple is finally bringing RCS to iPhones with iOS 18.

If your carrier supports RCS, here's how to make sure it's working on your iPhone.

1. Open Settings . 2. Tap Apps near the bottom of the menu. 3. Tap Messages . 4. Tap the toggle next to RCS Messaging under Text Messaging .

Now messaging Android devices will feel more like messaging another iPhone -- but you'll still see those green bubbles. And if you want to disable RCS, follow the above steps again.

Why won't RCS work on my iPhone?

If you updated your iPhone to iOS 18, your carrier supports RCS and you enabled it on your iPhone, but RCS isn't working for you, you might need to restart your iPhone.

However, if you've restarted your iPhone and RCS still isn't working, it's probably a bug in iOS 18. Don't forget, iOS 18 is still in beta, so this feature, and others, might not work properly. There will likely be more betas before the OS is released to the public, and there's plenty of time for Apple to address these issues. As of now, there's no word on when Apple will release iOS 18.

For more on iOS 18, here's my hands-on experience with the  iOS 18 public betas  and our iOS 18 beta cheat sheet . You can also check out what to know about the iOS 18.1 developer beta .

The power of data to help brands navigate consumer fear.

Rebecca Brooks is Founder and CEO of market research consultancy Alter Agents ; she believes that powerful insights can change businesses.

Five years ago, my research consultancy started a series of research projects that delved into consumer fear. Little did we know at the time that this topic would be highly apropos—launching just as we all plunged into the uncertainty, fear and anxiety caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing economic and social upheaval. We had actually started the research before all this began, in late 2019, because even then we could see that many consumers were acting from a place of worry and concern.

As fear rose along with the lingering pandemic, we did two more rounds of research on the subject, uncovering some surprising and eye-opening data. We tracked how top concerns shifted, both in topic and intensity, among consumer groups as the pandemic continued to drag on. By building this kind of deep understanding of consumer sentiment and emotions, we hoped that our clients and other brands could continue to build authentic, trusted relationships with their changing audiences.

What We Learned From Studying Consumer Fear

Our first wave of research showed that healthcare, personal finance and climate change were the top three fears among all consumers of all ages. The second wave, fielded in the summer of 2020, showed that worry about healthcare was slightly elevated, but the reasons shifted from high cost (December 2019) to actually being able to receive care (June 2020). In addition, concern surrounding social justice issues skyrocketed. The final wave showed another increase in healthcare concerns, among a plethora of additional issues. Politics also came to the forefront in the final round, unsurprisingly, since it was fielded during the 2020 U.S. presidential election (November 2020).

Now, we face another contentious election year, exacerbated by dizzying events like the attempted assassination of former President Trump and President Biden’s historic decision to leave the race at the 11th hour. Fear and anxiety—which have always been lurking in the background—are again taking center stage. The world feels shaky and uncertain and, while maybe not at the same level as the pandemic, it is certainly reminiscent of it.

Today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for friday, august 16, thursday, august 15. russia’s war on ukraine: news and information from ukraine, how data can boost consumer confidence.

Just as our fear research provided context and guidance for brands during an extremely uncertain time, market research continues to be a powerful force in identifying underlying societal trends that shape how consumers feel. The right insights can help companies and brands uncover their own roles in boosting positivity and building consumer confidence in a time of uncertainty.

I wrote earlier this year about how data can help build confidence, quoting behavioral economist Peter Atwater’s work exploring how certainty and control affect decision making. This doesn’t just affect individuals; it can affect companies as well. Data can help.

Look to consumer insights to help you:

• Identify shifting priorities: Market research can help your brand stay ahead of changing consumer concerns, enabling you to adapt your strategies and messaging to address the most pressing issues your audience faces. We’ve found that issues shift based on product category, although much of our original fear research showed that overriding concerns and worry span genders, races, generations and political leanings. Could this point to a society that’s not as divided as we think?

• Build trust and authenticity: By understanding nuanced consumer sentiment, brands can create more empathetic and supportive communication, fostering stronger, more trusted relationships. This is especially important when worry and anxiety are top emotions, or when misconceptions prevail. For example, many people are accusing companies of “greedflation”—purposely keeping prices high to boost profits—and the right data can help to combat perceptions like this.

• Inform strategic decision making: The bottom line is that the right consumer insights can bolster decision making across organizations, no matter the prevailing sentiment. Market research programs can be especially useful during times of upheaval in helping brands navigate uncertainty with confidence and resilience, and sharing that understanding with consumers can foster a sense of stability and trust.

Where To Start?

Combing the web for information about consumers can help provide some minimal context for your research program. For example, you can find some consumer confidence ratings online, especially regarding their financial situation. However, consumer behavior is much more complex than that, and promiscuous shoppers behave differently depending on the category in which they are conducting a transaction. Conducting your own research that is specifically geared toward your audience and your product and service category is the best way to understand the motivations and trade-off solutions your customers are using.

Fear isn’t going anywhere. People are worried about climate change, economic collapse, the upcoming election and even, according to Ipsos, “ killer robots .” When fear prevails, the power of data and insights becomes even more indispensable in helping brands navigate the complexities of consumer emotions and build lasting, positive relationships.

This time, Google has more at play, with a greater push to incorporate AI into its smartphone ahead of the public release of the rival Apple Intelligence .

We have already compared the Pixel 9 Pro line against Apple's Pro devices. Now, it's the turn of the non-Pro Pixel 9 against the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

iPhone 15 vs Google Pixel 9 - Physical Dimensions

An aluminum and glass sandwich design, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are built similarly, but with different sizes.

The Plus model is the biggest overall, measuring 6.33 inches long and 3.06 inches wide. The standard iPhone is 5.81 inches long and 2.82 inches wide.

Google's Pixel 9 is a longer and narrower phone overall. At 6 inches long, it's between the two iPhones, but its 2.8-inch width is a hair narrower than the smaller iPhone model.

Side view of a slim, gold-colored smartphone with protruding camera lens and buttons.

While it uses the same glass and aluminum body concept as the iPhone, the Pixel does manage to be a tiny bit thinner at 0.3 inches versus 0.31 for the iPhones. That said, it is unclear if the Pixel's thickness is rounded down, due to how Google restricts its measurements to one decimal place instead of two.

Though it is sized to be in the middle of the two iPhones, the Pixel does lean towards the Plus model when it comes to weight. The iPhone 15 and Plus are 6.02 ounces and 7.09 ounces respectively, while the Pixel 9 is 7 ounces.

iPhone 15 vs Google Pixel 9 - Display

Apple uses a Super Retina XDR display in its iPhones, measuring 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches respectively. These OLED screens have a Dynamic Island cutout at the top for the TrueDepth camera array, complete with Face ID recognition.

They also include Wide Color (P3) support, True Tone, HDR support, and an oleophobic coating. While it doesn't have the Pro model's ProMotion facility, it does have a refresh rate of 60Hz.

The Pixel has a 6.3-inch Actua display, which again is an OLED panel. Having HDR support and a full 24-bit depth for 16 million colors, it also boasts Smooth Display, which can operate between 60Hz and 120Hz.

Smartphone with a large, bezel-less display showing an abstract wallpaper with soft, blurry shapes in pastel colors.

In terms of resolution, iPhone takes the lead here, with the iPhone 16 at 2,556 by 1,179 pixels and the Plus at 2,796 by 1,290 pixels. The Pixel 9 manages just 2,424 by 1,080 pixels for its screen.

That gives the iPhones a pixel density of 460 pixels per inch apiece, while the Pixel 9 gets to 422ppi. You're getting a more pixel-dense display with the iPhones.

The iPhones are certainly bright at 1,000 nits for typical brightness, 1,600 nits for peak HDR brightness, and up to 2,000 nits possible when used outdoors. However, the Pixel 9 boasts up to 1,800 nits for HDR content and 2,700 nits for outdoor brightness.

While brighter, the Pixel 9 is comparable to the iPhones when it comes to contrast ratio, as they all work at up to 2 million to one.

iPhone 15 vs Google Pixel 9 - Cameras

The iPhones have a pair of cameras on the back, with a 48-megapixel Main sensor equipped with sensor-shift optical image stabilization. There's also the 12MP Ultra Wide camera as well.

However, Apple does call upon the 48-megapixel sensor to fake a third camera level. A 12MP 2x Telephoto "camera" is included, but really it's a tight crop of the larger sensor's image, albeit one that is still technically an optical "zoom."

You still get a 10x digital zoom level overall, in part thanks to the sensor size.

The Google Pixel has a 50MP Octa PD wide camera on the rear, along with a 48MP Quad PD ultrawide with autofocus. The back also benefits from a single-zone LDAF (laser detect autofocus) sensor, which is a feature closer to the iPhone 15 Pro's capabilities.

Around the front, Apple has the TrueDepth camera array, which has a 12MP camera with autofocus. You don't get the 3D depth mapping on the Pixel 9, nor the resolution, as it has a 10.5MP selfie camera with autofocus.

Close-up of a smartphone's dual camera system with a flash, set in a rectangular module on a light-colored back.

Both lines have computational photography benefits, such as Portrait mode, low light photography, and various elements to improve pictures.

Google does go further thanks to its AI smarts, including photo unblurring and the ability to remove unwanted elements from an image. Apple Intelligence offers some editing options in a similar vein, but it's not coming to the iPhone 15.

On the video front, there's a fair similarity between the models. Both can handle 4K video at 60fps, HDR, 240fps slo-mo, and have a variety of stabilization and filming modes.

iPhone 15 vs Google Pixel 9 - Processing and the promise of AI

Inside the iPhone 15 is the A16 Bionic, an Apple-designed chip with a 6-core CPU and a five-core GPU. The CPU cores consist of two performance cores and four efficiency cores.

It also has the 16-core Neural Engine, which is used to help with certain tasks such as computational photography features and others aided by machine learning. There's also 6GB of memory in use by the iPhones.

The Google Tensor G4 is the brain of the Pixel 9. It's made up of a 1-3-4 core configuration, consisting of a single powerful core accompanied by three mid-size cores and four efficiency cores.

Oddly, this is a marginally lower core count than the G3, but it does have higher clock speeds.

Google also includes the Titan M2 security co-processor and 12GB of memory, double that of the iPhones.

We can't directly compare the chips due to a lack of Pixel 9 benchmarks, but we can be sure that there will be a different capacity for AI.

Google says it will be offering all of its inbound AI capabilities across the curret-gen Pixel range. However, Apple Intelligence is being limited to only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, as well as future iPhone releases.

Yes, you will be able to experience more AI benefits on the Pixel 9 over the iPhone 15. Things will be more level for the iPhone 16.

iPhone 15 vs Google Pixel 9 - Connectivity, power, and other features

Both iPhone and Pixel support full-fat 5G, covering both Sub-6Ghz and mmWave connections.

On local connectivity, there's Wi-Fi 7 in the Pixel to the iPhone's Wi-Fi 6, but both do have Bluetooth 5.3. The iPhone benefits from Ultra Wideband support which the Pixel doesn't, as well as features like Emergency SOS via Satellite and Roadside Assistance via Satellite.

USB-C is the defacto physical connection for both models. Wireless charging is also available, including Qi on both and MagSafe on the iPhone.

A beige smartphone with dual rear cameras and a small flash, featuring the Google logo in the center.

For battery life, the iPhone 15 is said to offer up to 20 hours of video playback, rising to 26 hours on the Plus. Google says its smartphone can handle over 24 hours of typical usage.

Fast charging is available on each, with Google claiming a 55% charge is possible in 30 minutes using a 45W USB-C charger. In Apple's case, it offers a 50% charge in 30 minutes using a 20W charger or higher.

For biometric security, Apple sticks to Face ID, while Google opts for fingerprint recognition.

iPhone 15 vs Google Pixel 9 - Storage, color, and price

Available in Black, Blue, Green, Yellow, or Pink, the iPhone 15 and Plus are offered in three capacities: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

The Pixel 9 is available in a choice of Peony, Wintergreen, Porcelain, and Obsidian. The capacity choice is a bit narrower, as you could choose either 128GB or 256GB.

For pricing, the iPhone 15 starts from $799, rising to $1,099. The Plus model goes from $899 to $1,199.

The Pixel 9 is $799 for the 128GB capacity, and $899 for the 256GB, in line with the iPhone 15.

iPhone 15 vs Google Pixel 9 - Which to buy

It's fair to say that Google has created a pretty decent smartphone in the Pixel 9. On paper, it has features that are certainly in the same ballpark as the iPhone 15.

Where the Pixel 9 takes a decisive lead is in Google's push to include more AI smarts in it.

Google spent a considerable amount of time at the product launch on all of the imaging, search, and other features powered by its Gemini AI tool, as well as other similar elements.

These are all things in an area where Apple Intelligence can improve the lives of iPhone users. Except it won't help the iPhone 15 because Apple says only the iPhone 15 Pro models will support it, and the non-Pro iPhone 15 won't.

This does give Google a considerable advantage, but it's a short-lived one.

The world is expecting the iPhone 16 to come out in September, one which will inherit most of the performance elements of the iPhone 15 Pro. That means the iPhone 16 will be capable of using Apple Intelligence.

To answer the question truthfully, you shouldn't buy either smartphone now, and to instead wait for the iPhone 16 before making that decision.

Where to buy the Google Pixel 9 and iPhone 15

The Google Pixel 9 is available to order now at Amazon and Best Buy , with an MSRP of $799.

If you prefer the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus, wireless carriers are currently incentivizing the devices with offers up to $830 off. The best iPhone deals are at your fingertips in our dedicated roundup, but you can also jump straight to the individual carriers below.
