essay on national reading day

Since 2017, 19 June is India’s national reading day. The day marks PN Panicker’s death anniversary. Panicker travelled through the villages of Kerala and popularised the slogan, ‘ Read and Grow’ . Because of his pioneering work, in April 1991 Kerala became the first totally literate state in India.

Panicker formed the Travancore Library Association (TLA) in 1945 with 47 rural libraries which grew to 6,000 libraries. When Kerala state was formed in 1956, TLA became Kerala Granthasala Sangham (KGS). In 1975, KGS won UNESCO ’s ‘Krupsakaya Award’ for outstanding achievements in the eradication of illiteracy.

Reading began six thousand years ago. Initially only a few could read, and they were held in awe by the public. But by 2020, 86.81% of world’s population was literate, that is, could read and write.

A brief history of reading

In the 4 th Millennium BCE, some unknown writer in Mesopotamia inscribed some squiggles on clay to represent a goat and an ox. Thus, began writing and reading.

Akkadian princess and High Priestess Enheduanna is the earliest known author. Around 2300 BCE, she composed temple hymns, inscribed these onto clay tablets, and signed her name.

The masses were still illiterate. Written material reached them only through public readings. In the 5th century BCE, the Greek historian Herodotus read his latest works at the Olympics. By first century CE authors’ readings became a social convention in Rome.

Johannes Gutenberg’s mechanical printing press in 1450 enabled books to be printed on a large scale. Public also became more literate. Libraries, first of which was set up in Nineveh (modern-day Iraq) in 07 BCE, became numerous.

Written words are potent and powerful. Words can empower, encourage, and uplift people. Reading is thus a powerful tool. Therefore, dictators, totalitarians, and authoritative regimes often prevented people whom they wished to oppress, such as slaves and women, from reading.

Benefits of reading

Research shows that the major benefits of reading are:

  • Cognitive Development

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” said Joseph Addison the eighteenth-century English essayist, poet, and playwright.

“Reading stimulates a complex network of circuits and signals in the brain.” As the reading ability improves, “these networks become stronger and more sophisticated.” And our brain’s capacity and functioning increases.

When we read, we engage with the text, analyse the information, and draw conclusions. This mental exercise strengthens our cognitive processes and enhances our overall intellectual capacity.

  • Improves Memory

A nonfiction book contains lot of information on the subject we are reading about. Much of the information is new to us and we need to remember it. Even when we read fiction, say a novel, we need to understand and remember much information such as the plot, sub-plots, characters, environment and much else.

New information creates new memories. And every new memory creates synapses or strengthens old ones. We learn to store information and to recall it. Regular reading thus improves our memory.

  • Improves Communication Skills

Communication is a vital life skill. A study showed that 69% of employers hire people with “soft” skills, such as effective communication.

Reading exposes us to good writing. We are influenced by the style, cadence, and composition of the writing, and our lexicon is enlarged. Reading exposes us to different narrative techniques. All these seeps into our communications and enhance our ability to structure our thoughts and narratives. Good reading precede good writing. Reading thus helps us communicate clearly and articulately, both orally and in writing.

C ommunication works for those who work at it. Reading is the most effective way to work on our communication skills.

  • Improves Empathy

Functional Theory of Mind (ToM) is crucial for success in social interactions .

ToM is the capacity to surmise what is happening in the other person’s mind; to understand that other persons thoughts , intentions , desires , beliefs , and emotions may be different from our own. People use ToM to infer and judge other persons’ behaviors.

Long-term fiction readers develop a better “theory of mind,” better empathy. Because when we read the characters’ emotions and inner lives, our ability to understand others’ feelings and views improves.

  • Improve Attention and Focus

Ability to focus and concentrate for long periods is vital to success and wellbeing. But a study by Microsoft showed that people lose attention after just eight seconds. Reading

helps us practice focus and concentration on just one thing at a time.

  • Reduce Stress

Just 30 minutes of reading lowers heart rate, blood pressure, and feelings of psychological distress. A study found that just six minutes of reading reduced stress levels by more than two-thirds. Another study found that reading better-reduced stress than playing video games, walking, or drinking a cup of tea or coffee.

UK’s National Health Service (NHS) began a Reading Well program that prescribes self-help books because these reduce depression or other mood disorders. “Bibliotherapy” uses reading books as therapy.

  • Knowledge Expansion

Reading gives us access to information on an extensive range of topics, such as history, science, literature, and more; allows us to explore different subjects and gain a deeper understanding of the world around us. Through reading, we can delve into new cultures, ideas, and perspectives, broadening our knowledge and challenging our existing beliefs.

Studies have shown that reading regularly enhances critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and analytical reasoning. Reading also improves memory retention, concentration, and focus, skills that are crucial for academic and professional success.

  • Expanding Imagination and Creativity

Reading fuels our imagination and creativity. When we read, we visualize characters, settings, and events in our minds. This mental imagery stimulates our creative faculties and enhances our ability to think outside the box. The imaginative worlds presented in books allow us to explore infinite possibilities and cultivate our creative thinking.

  • Entertainment.

Reading fiction – short stories, novels, dramas – is free entertainment.

  • Improves Sleep

Reading when going to bed makes it easier to fall asleep and improves the quality of sleep.

  • Increases Life Span

Reading helps us live longer.

A 12-year study found that those who read books survived about two years longer than those who didn’t read books or read magazines and other forms of media. And that those who read for 30 minutes a day (3.5 hours per week) were 23% more likely to outlive those who didn’t read often.

One study by Dr Robert Freidland found that older adults who regularly read or played mentally challenging games like chess were two and a half times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Reading is an essential activity that offers numerous benefits. It expands our vocabulary, enhances language skills, and broadens our knowledge base. Reading stimulates cognitive development, boosts emotional well-being, and nurtures creativity. It promotes empathy, cultural understanding, and critical thinking. As a lifelong habit, reading equips us with the tools we need to navigate the complexities of the world and empowers us to become lifelong learners.

No wonder the US’s National Institute on Aging recommends reading daily because of its health benefits.

The National Reading Day is a tribute to PN Panicker, who played a significant role in the literacy movement in India. Reading helps in improving memory and creativity as well as helps to reduce stress.

National Reading Day 2024: History, Significance, Few Must-Read Books

Hyderabad: India observes the National Reading Day on June 19 to mark the death anniversary of Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, referred to as PN Panicker, a well-known educator and founder of the Keralan library movement.

In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared June 19 as the National Reading Day.

Way back in 1926, Panicker, who worked as a teacher in his hometown founded his first library. Slowly, he started 47 local libraries in order to promote reading habits among people. The libraries were set up under Travancore Library Association, which was established in 1945. Panikar’s Kerala Grandhasala Sangham spearheaded a popular cultural movement across the state.

PN Panicker, Father of Library Movement in India:

He was born in Jamjamjun in 1901. He became a teacher after completing his studies with distinction. It is believed that his work motivated him to encourage literacy in Kerala. Kerala Granthasala Sangham (KGS) was founded in 1945 thanks to Panicker's initiative. People refer to it as Travancore Library Association. The KGS network expanded to 6,000 more libraries in the state and even won UNESCO Krupsakaya Award in 1975.

Benefits Of Reading:

  • Improves memory.
  • Books can replace screen time.
  • Improves communication skills.
  • It inspires creativity.
  • Builds your vocabulary.
  • Reduces stress.
  • Improves sleep.
  • Helps alleviate depression symptoms.
  • Reading is a form of entertainment.
  • Helps in knowledge expansion.
  • Teaches empathy.
  • Improve attention and focus.
  • Increases life span.

Books for beginners

  • The Alchemist:

A classic novel with a boy named Santiago embarking on a journey of seeking treasures in Egyptian Pyramids after having recurring dreams about it. He falls in love and also learns the importance of focusing on the right things in life.

  • The Kite Runner:

It is a powerful, one-of-a-kind, and an exceptional classic. The bond between a wealthy youngster and the son of his father's servant is at the centre of the narrative and conveys a powerful message.

  • To Kill A Mockingbird:

It is a dramatic, profoundly emotional and incredibly humane story that transports readers to the earliest stages of human history. Harper Lee examines feelings of harshness, sensitivity, and innocence.

  • Diary of a Young Girl:

The young Anne Frank writes about her family's struggles to flee Nazi Germany's fascist government in her diary. Her two years at "The Secret Annexe," from the age of thirteen to fifteen, when they were found, are chronicled in the diary.

  • Normal People:

Connell and Marianne, two young adults, are at the centre of the narrative. The plot revolves around the complications of friendship and family as well as everything that comes with first love.

Declining reading trend:

The era of reading books as the favorite past time has come to an end due to the ease with which digital media can now be consumed and the attraction of entertainment that is screen-based.

One of the main causes of the reduction in conventional reading habits is the increase in screen usage. The allure of rolling up with a book has drastically faded in an era where mobile phones are commonplace, streaming services provide limitless entertainment, and social media platforms offer quick pleasure. These digital media disrupt our expectations of entertainment.

The loss of reading is also greatly influenced by our fast-paced way of life. The constant quest of efficiency characterises modern life, leaving little time or patience for leisure pursuits like reading. It might be difficult for the modern person to find time to read because of their ever-increasing workloads and the hectic pace of everyday life.

Lastly, there has been a notable change in entertainment and education choices that has affected reading habits. Multimedia learning and digital literacy are becoming more and more important in educational settings, frequently at the expense of traditional reading. At the same time, it appears that people favour entertaining content over educational content.

National Reading Month – March 2025

National Reading Month is celebrated in March to honor Dr. Suess’s birthday. In this month people, especially children, read a lot more in celebration and although some people may find the increased emphasis on reading to be boring, the increase in reading during this month has significant benefits that will continue to pay off in the future. Reading is one of the best habits to develop; it strengthens the mental muscles, helps to improve comprehension and analytical abilities, and increases imagination and boosts memory.

History of National Reading Month

March was designated as National Reading Month to celebrate Dr. Suess. He was born on March 2, 1904. Interestingly enough, Dr. Suess was not a doctor at all, he was a writer and an illustrator of very popular children’s books including “The Cat in the Hat” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. He also wrote several books for beginner readers of which “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” (published in 1960) was the most notable one. He received a Pulitzer Prize in 1984 for his contribution to the education of America’s children and their parents.

Today we might take reading for granted but it has a very long history and there was a time when only a few people knew how to read. The first written communication did not happen until 3500 B.C., and the first books did not appear until around 23 B.C. in Rome. Around this time, books were also developed in some Asian countries and the Middle East. Before the printing press was introduced in the 15th century, books were quite expensive and rare but as printed books gained popularity, Literacy rates began to rise. In 1892, the first book covers appeared and in the 19th century, publishers started printing books with hardbacks.

Nowadays, even though almost everyone can read, people hardly read and, unfortunately, we are losing our reading culture as a society. That is why we all need this National Reading Month which is a whole month to help us revive our reading habits.

National Reading Month timeline

The book titled “The Epic Gilgamesh” is the first book to ever be written.

3-Minute Reading Day Speech in English for Students

essay on national reading day

Reading Day Speech

19 June is annually observed as National Reading Day. This day is celebrated to honour the life and work of the Father of India’s Library Movement; Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker . This page will discuss a 3-minute Reading Day speech for school students. This speech aims to raise awareness about the importance of reading in our lives and the benefits of reading.

Reading Day Speech in 3-Minute

‘Good morning, respected teachers and friends. On this beautiful day, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss my views on National Reading Day. On 19 June, the entire nation observes National Reading Day to honour the life and work of PN Panikar, also known as the Father of India’s Library Movement. Mr Paniker was a renowned teacher and educator from the Southern State of Kerala. This great man devoted his entire life to promoting literacy and education in India.

Many of us might have not heard about Mr Paniker because he was a teacher and not a Bollywood superstar or a politician. But what he did for the country makes him a remarkable intellectual.

On this Reading Day, I would like to discuss the importance of reading and how it can help us build a better future. Reading is more than just a skill; it is a gateway to endless adventures, vast knowledge, and profound understanding. Through books, we can travel to distant lands, experience diverse cultures, and step into the shoes of characters who challenge us to see the world through different lenses.

But there is a problem with today’s world. Reading requires patience, which many of us lack. We find sitting on a chair silently and reading for hours boring, claiming we can do a whole lot of activities in those hours. Surely we can, but those hours devoted solely to reading will do more than any other activity.

Considering the efforts of Mr Paniker, the Government, social media influencers and other intellectuals are encouraging people to read and learn more. As individuals, we can help bring a change as well by sharing books with friends, reading to someone, and exploding a new genre.
Books are more than just words on a page—they are the building blocks of our minds and the windows to our souls. By fostering a love for reading, we equip ourselves and our children with the tools to succeed and thrive in an ever-changing world.

Happy National Reading Day, everyone! May your literary journeys be ever-enriching and endlessly enjoyable.
Thank you.

It was one of the first libraries that democratized access to reading material, rekindling people’s interest in books and reading.

The Proclamation of National Reading Day 2023

While the inaugural celebrations were held in the 1990s, it was in 2017 when the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, officially declared June 19 as National Reading Day.

Why We Celebrate National Reading Day in India

National Reading Day is celebrated on Mr. P.N Panicker’s death anniversary to honor his pioneering efforts in enhancing literacy rates in India. His work has elevated reading from a privilege of the few to an accessible right of many.

The Impact and Value of Reading Day

National Reading Day , marked by the advent of libraries in India, serves as a beacon to highlight the importance of reading, literacy, and language communication.

Libraries transformed reading from an elitist activity into a universal pleasure, sparking a newfound interest in literature.

How to Commemorate National Reading Day?

National Reading Day invites everyone to celebrate in their own unique ways – be it diving into a favorite book, sharing a book with a loved one, or participating in literary competitions organized by educational institutions.

Furthermore, sharing insightful learning experiences and personal reading journeys can add a layer of depth to the celebration.

Activities to Celebrate National Reading Day

To make National Reading Day both enjoyable and memorable, several activities can be organized at various levels. These could include themed debates, storytelling contests, setting up a one-day library, or even distributing free books.

These initiatives could inspire participants to incorporate reading into their daily routines and perceive it as a delightful pursuit rather than a monotonous task.

In the grand scheme of things, reading is a powerful tool – it entertains, educates, enhances focus, and sharpens communication skills.

On National Reading Day , we not only pay homage to P.N. Panicker’s vision and unwavering commitment to promoting reading but also celebrate the transformative power of reading in shaping individuals, communities, and societies.

National Space Day Essay in 500 Words

National Space Day will be observed on August 23, 2024. It recognizes the achievements that India has achieved in space exploration and the advancements she has made in space technology. It was on August 23, 2023 that the government announced that from 2024, this day will be celebrated as National Space Day.

India became the first nation to land near the lunar South Pole on August 23, 2023. National Space Day celebrates the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission which achieved a safe and soft landing of the Vikram Lander at the 'Shiv Shakti' point and deployed the Pragyaan Rover on the lunar surface. Behind the success of this mission, lies the hardwork and dedication of the scientists of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

ISRO was initially the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), established in 1962. ISRO, formed on August 15, 1969, superseded INCOSPAR. Chandrayaan-3 came after the failure of Chandrayaan-2. Chandrayaan-2 was launched on July 22, 2019. In September, ISRO lost contact with the Vikram lander as it crashed. This happened due to the high velocity of the lander.

Chandrayaan-3 displayed India’s commitment to space exploration and to unravel the mysteries of the Moon. Chandrayaan-3 consisted of an indigenous Lander module (LM), Propulsion module (PM) and a Rover with the purpose of developing and demonstrating new technologies needed for Inter planetary missions. The rover's purpose was to carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface.

The objectives of the mission were to demonstrate safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, to demonstrate rover roving on the Moon and to conduct in-situ scientific experiments.

Chandrayaan-3 focused on- to carry out the measurements of thermal properties of lunar surface near polar region, to derive the chemical composition and infer mineralogical composition, to determine the elemental composition of lunar soil and rocks etc.

It will also help in the future discoveries of smaller planets in reflected light which will allow us to probe into a variety of Exo-planets which would qualify for the presence of life. Apart from this, ISRO has launched many missions such as the Aditya-L1 mission (September 2, 2023). It is the first space based Indian mission to study the Sun.

Few of the prominent future missions of ISRO are- Gaganyaan-1 (demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching crew of 3 members to an orbit of 400 km for a 3 days mission and bring them back safely), NISAR (being developed by ISRO with NASA, first dual frequency radar imaging mission), Shukrayaan (mission to study Venus), Mangalyaan-2 (India’s second mission to Mars).
