What is Investment Research?

History of investment research, why is investment research important, the role of investment research analysts, what does a buy-side research analyst do, what does a sell-side research analyst do, what do research analysts focus on, do you need a cfa charter to be a research analyst, benefits of investment research, informed decision-making, mitigation of risks, maximizing returns, building a diversified portfolio, investment trends and ai, the intersection of technology and finance, data scientists and investment decision-making, credit risk assessment, industry trends and future performance, navigating the future with informed decisions, additional resources, the comprehensive guide to investment research.

Investment Research

Investment research is the bedrock of informed financial analysis. It involves a detailed examination and analysis of various financial instruments, markets, and economic trends to aid investors in making investment decisions. This process empowers investors and institutions alike to allocate their capital effectively, maximize returns, and mitigate risks.

Investment research analyst is a broad term, and the exact nature of the role can differ significantly. However, all roles involve working as a financial detective, using financial statements, economic indicators, and financial market and industry trends to generate comprehensive research reports. These reports serve as valuable guides for investors, helping them make informed decisions about allocating their funds.

Key Highlights

  • Investment research involves a detailed examination and analysis of various financial instruments, markets, and trends to aid investors in making investment decisions.
  • Investment research analysts are usually divided into two groups: buy-side analysts and sell-side analysts.
  • Benefits of investment research include more informed decision marking and risk mitigation.
  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science are empowering investment research analysts to process vast amounts of data rapidly and derive actionable insights.

The roots of investment research can be traced back centuries. The Dutch East India Company, established in the 17th century, is often considered the precursor to modern corporations, marking the beginning of institutional investments. However, formalized investment research gained momentum in the 20th century with the advent of stock exchanges and the increasing complexity of financial markets.

Over time, investment research evolved to incorporate various disciplines such as economics, statistics, and behavioral psychology. In the mid-20th century, the establishment of the Chartered Financial Analyst ( CFA ) designation brought a standardized framework for professional excellence in investment analysis.

Investment research analysts play a pivotal role in the financial services industry. These professionals are responsible for conducting extensive research on equity and fixed income markets, companies, industries, and economic trends. By leveraging their analytical skills, investment research analysts provide insights into potential investment opportunities and risks.

Investment research analysts, often abbreviated to just research analyst, are usually divided into two groups, based on the type of institution they work for. These two groups are referred to as the buy side and the sell side .

The primary distinction between a buy-side and sell-side research analyst lies in their clientele and objectives. Buy-side analysts focus on optimizing their firm’s investment portfolio performance, while sell-side analysts cater to external clients.

Buy-side analysts work for institutional investors, asset managers, hedge funds, pension funds, and mutual funds. Buy-side firms are actively involved in buying and selling securities such as stocks and bonds on behalf of their clients or shareholders, who are the ultimate asset owners. While portfolio managers will ultimately make the decision to invest in or sell a security, they rely on the detailed information provided to them by their research analysts to achieve their investment objectives.

Buy-side analysts conduct in-depth research to identify promising investment opportunities aligned with their fund’s strategy and objectives. These funds may invest in the equity markets or fixed income markets, or they may invest in alternative markets, such as the commodities markets. Their research reports may also be focused on macroeconomic analysis, industry analysis, or portfolio construction, in order to help their portfolio managers to stay ahead of the competition.

Investment Research - Buy Side

Sell-side research analysts, on the other hand, work for institutions such as investment banks and brokerages . Their primary role is to communicate ideas in a detailed research report to either their buy side clients, their own salespeople, or to specialist groups within the finance industry, such as M&A advisory groups.

One of the key functions of sell-side analysts is to issue recommendations on whether to buy, hold, or sell particular securities, such as a stock or a bond. These recommendations carry weight within the market, influencing a broad range of investors. Sell-side analysts also play a critical role in investment banking activities, by researching and providing analysis that is then used for initial public offerings ( IPO s).

Investment Research - Sell Side

A research analyst will have a specific area of expertise that they focus on, known as their “coverage.” This allows them to become experts in that particular area and add value to any investor that uses their research. Typical areas of coverage include:

  • Sector Coverage means the research analyst covers any one of a number of specific sectors or industries, such as technology, healthcare, media, or consumer goods. These sector specialists undertake deep dives into the dynamics of their particular sector, evaluating company financials, and providing research reports and recommendations on individual companies within that sector or industry.
  • Geographic Coverage allows a research analyst to focus on companies within a specific region, country, or group of countries. This is especially relevant for investment banks that provide access across various global markets.
  • Company Coverage means that a research analyst focuses on one (or a select few) specific company. This can happen when that company is a large, widely invested in, and influential company, such as Apple or Microsoft. These analysts become experts on the specific business they cover, providing detailed financial analysis, earnings forecasts, and investment recommendations for those companies.
  • Product Coverage refers to research analysts, typically on the sell side, who specialize in specific financial products or services, such as stocks, bonds, commodities, and derivatives.
  • Macro Coverage refers to research analysts that undertake independent economic research at a macro level, using data on interest rates, inflation, economic activity, and employment that ultimately helps investors with their investing strategies.

While not mandatory, many investment research analysts pursue the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation to enhance their credibility and expertise. The CFA program covers a broad spectrum of financial topics, including ethics, economics, and portfolio management. Earning a CFA charter signals a commitment to high professional standards and can open doors to advanced career opportunities in investment research.

The primary benefit of investment research is the ability to make well-informed decisions based on financial data. Investors armed with thorough research can better navigate the complexities of financial markets, identify profitable trading strategies, and steer clear of potential market pitfalls.

Investing always carries inherent risks, but investment research serves as a risk management tool. By thoroughly understanding the market dynamics and individual assets, investors can mitigate potential risks and navigate market volatility, safeguarding their capital.

A well-researched investment strategy increases the likelihood of maximizing returns. Investment research analysts aim to uncover undervalued assets and predict market trends, enabling investors to capitalize on opportunities for growth.

Diversification is a cornerstone of many investment strategies. Investment research aids in identifying a diverse range of assets, spreading risk, and optimizing the balance between potential returns against potential risk.

Investment Trends and AI

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into investment research has revolutionized the research landscape. Emerging technologies, including machine learning tools and data science, have empowered analysts to process vast amounts of data rapidly and derive actionable insights.

Data scientists play a pivotal role in investment research. By employing advanced analytics, they uncover patterns, correlations, and predictive models that traditional methods might overlook. This enhances the accuracy of investment decisions and contributes to more robust portfolio management.

AI has proven particularly valuable in assessing credit risk . Machine learning algorithms can analyze an array of factors to evaluate the creditworthiness of individuals, companies, and even countries. This assists investment professionals in making more nuanced and precise credit-related decisions.

Staying ahead of industry trends is critical for anticipating future performance. AI algorithms excel at identifying patterns within large amounts of data and predicting potential market shifts. Investment research, enhanced by AI, empowers analysts to explore emerging markets, predict sector trends, and position portfolios for future success.

In conclusion, investment research helps to guide investors through the ever-changing landscape of financial markets. From the historical roots of market analysis to the current integration of AI, the evolution of investment research reflects the continuous need for deeper insights from data and more accurate predictions.

Investment Research: Benefits, Trends, and Types

research topics in investment

Investment research is the time spent by investors studying and analyzing the performance of financial assets in order to create a list of well-performing assets. In other words, it is a preliminary stage in investment in which both individual investors and investment banking companies search, find, and study information related to stocks or other assets to find investment opportunities .

Let’s find out more about the crucial role investment research has on investing.

Investment research is the time spent by investors studying and analyzing the performance of financial assets in order to create a list of well-performing assets.

The history of investment research

The very first stock exchange.

Investment research has a long history. Ever since the first stock exchange was established more than 400 years ago, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, investors could access information and get investment advice to learn which decisions to make.

A few centuries later, in the 20th century, the stock market became more popular. Banks started to send investment research to their clients through the mail. This information was aimed to solve investors’ problems, such as information inaccuracies and fraud.

Advanced research

Since the 1980s, many advanced research portals were created, including Bloomberg . This is how investment research has become extremely important for investors as a method of collecting accurate and reliable data so that the global investment research market passed the $16 billion mark in 2017.

Continuous evolution

In the 21st century, investment research is constantly evolving. This is due to the greater availability of data, breadth, variety of sources , and multiple analysis methods. For instance, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence allow investors to analyze a larger amount of information coming from varied sources, known as public web data .

Why is investment research important?

One of the main purposes of investment research is to allow investors to gain more knowledge about specific company information, may it be growth, stocks, technological advancement, and more. Once this data is collected, it helps investors build a more complete picture of the company’s performance and decide about an investment opportunity. There must be sound reasons why investment research has played such an important role in investors’ decisions ever since the first stock exchange was established.

Many investors tend to make financial decisions based on common beliefs or theoretical assumptions, such as growth means high risk, efficient market theory, or value stocks versus growth stocks. These common assumptions and theories aim to speed up the decision-making process. However, it's a poor practice in terms of risk management since sustainable investing requires thorough research and analysis.

Careful analysis

Unfortunately, the dynamics of emerging markets can completely contradict such concepts. For instance, selecting stocks according to their size is not an efficient investment strategy as there is no indication of future performance. One example would be Kodak, along with many other giants that crashed despite their size.

Kodak's biggest mistake was turning away from new and evolving technology and trying to convince the competition that the film cameras were better than up-and-coming digital ones. They ignored all the media and market news altogether and crumbled down despite its size.

External factors

Other investors also expose themselves to a broad range of information obtained through methods of authority. In this case, individuals make investment decisions based on what other authoritative sources, such as news media, recommend without doing their own research. In this case, investors are heavily exposed to biases and external influence.

Long-term investors, such as family offices, know that they need to do their own research or choose data providers that are reliable, accurate, and professional. Independent investment research requires not only effort and time but also quality data inputs. The information can be then analyzed through scientific methods, such as statistical methods, algorithms, and more.

Investment research allows investors to gain more knowledge about specific company information, may it be growth, stocks, technological advancement, and more.

Benefits of investment research

Increased accuracy of business valuations.

As mentioned before, investment research refers to asset management. Asset managers are responsible for making investment decisions on behalf of asset owners; therefore, research and analysis is required to accurately evaluate certain assets and make educated decisions. As a result, it supports the foundation of the investment process: business valuation.

Although there are numerous strategies and approaches for business valuation, investors now use sophisticated methods to conduct this critical stage, such as analyzing public web data using computer models, along with traditional data.

For instance, many private firms in the United States do not have public financial information available. In this case, investors leverage a combination of firmographic , technographic , company funding , social media, and other public web data types to conduct a financial evaluation on the prospect.

This information is often supplemented by traditional data, such as public financial releases and public information. For public companies, investors can use public web data to calculate the value of intangible assets, including brands.

Data-driven decisions

When your investment decisions are based on intuition, guesswork, or others’ recommendations, you are likely to experience distress. This is because you may not fully understand the risk, rewards, and other important aspects that will be reflected in your portfolio.

Many investors tend to make rushed decisions, but these will be highly likely to underperform. Instead, experienced investors know that they need time to focus, research, and make each decision based on facts and data.

Also, you may want to keep in mind that certain funds may entail international, currency, or credit risk, as well as risky interest rates.

Investment research will help you become more confident knowing that all of your hard-earned money is invested according to your own research, knowledge, and on your terms.

There are six main steps that you can take in order to establish a sophisticated research process to make sure that all your investing-related decisions are well-informed and properly executed. See the infographic below for more information on those steps.

generating investment insights with public web data

Investment research trends

1. the focus on investment research.

Perhaps one of the most prevalent trends in this field is the increased focus on investment research. As the pandemic started to affect all economies in 2020, investors were challenged by uncertainty, market volatility, and, subsequently, great risks of losing their investments.

Many people focused more on researching stocks to invest in, what companies may benefit from the pandemic, and what industries are safer. This trend is likely to remain in the future, especially as investors have started to demand higher-quality, detailed information.

2. Public web data

Private equity and venture capital firms are looking for growth signals in early-stage businesses for more security. Sometimes financial metrics alone do not portray the full picture. As a result, investment professionals rely on public web data to fill in the missing gaps of information in business performance.

This might refer to:

  • Customer sentiment
  • Headcount changes
  • Employee distribution
  • Funding rounds and amounts
  • Seniority levels
  • Web traffic
  • Search trends
  • Social media sentiment
  • Product pricing

3. Artificial intelligence and machine-learning methods

With such an abundant amount of information we can find online, investors can be easily overwhelmed. One of the main trends refers to the adoption of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, in order to be able to collect and analyze all of this information.

This is because technology allows investors to automatically interpret structured or unstructured information and find new patterns and trends on which they can easily capitalize. The surge in alt data usage is undoubtedly associated with a similar surge in AI adoption, so investors can quickly obtain actionable insights from large datasets.

For instance, one major example of AI implementation in investing would be algorithmic trading . It is one of the most used tools in the financial industry. The algorithm consists of complex mathematical models that select theoretically profitable transactions without human interference.

Public web data allows you to fill in the gaps of missing information to build a full picture

Investment types

There are four most common types of investments: equity , cash and cash equivalents , fixed income , and commodities .

Let’s take a closer look at them.

Equity refers to a growth investment ideal for medium- to long-term strategies. These represent company shares you can buy on the stock market.

2. Cash (highly liquid assets)

Cash and cash equivalents refer to highly liquid, short-term assets. These may represent different money market instruments, such as T-Bills, certificates of deposits, and others. These assets are similar to cash; they come with low risk and low return.

3. Fixed-income assets

Those assets include bonds, mutual funds, preferred stock, corporate bonds, and others. However, keep in mind that other mutual funds and assets, more beneficial for you specifically, might be available. These provide the investor a fixed income over a certain period and come with a lower risk profile than equity.

4. Commodities

Finally, a commodity refers to investing in basic goods, such as oil, grains, beef, oil, gold, and many more. Nowadays, the definition also covers other products, such as indexes, foreign currencies, and even entirely new types of goods, such as bandwidth.

It is important to note that because of technological advancements, there are additional investment types available. For instance, investors now have access to cryptocurrencies, futures, real estate, and others.

The major stages of investing

  • The first stage is saving money for it , along with a put-and-take account. This account should have approximately six months’ worth of your net pay for emergencies and daily expenses.
  • Once you have enough money to invest without running out of daily necessities, the next step is to proceed. In this case, you should start with low-risk endeavors .
  • The third stage is known as systematic investing . This means consistently distributing a certain amount of money every pay period.
  • The next stage is known as strategic investing . This means to start balancing your portfolio using diversification. Typically, people in this stage set goals for the next decade.
  • The fifth stage is not very common among individual investors. It is known as speculative investing , a stage that comes with the highest risks and highest gains.

All in all, investment research is a crucial stage in the entire process. Analyzing financial institutions for informational purposes allows you to better define your financial goals and improve overall investment intelligence.

It aims to help investors determine which financial assets fit within their investing strategy using facts and data. The main benefits of investment research are decreasing uncertainty and outperforming the market using available data.

Investment Advisers Subject to AML and SARs Requirements

Jones Day logo

The Situation: The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network ("FinCEN") has adopted a rule that subjects certain investment advisers to anti-money laundering/countering the financing of terrorism program ("AML") requirements applicable to other financial institutions.

The Result: Those investment advisers will need to establish working AML programs and be prepared to file suspicious activity reports ("SARs") by January 1, 2026.

Looking Ahead: Investment advisers should be on the lookout for related rules covering customer identification programs and beneficial ownership of entities. The Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") and FinCEN proposed a customer identification program rule. While this proposed rule is still in the comment stage, investment advisers should continue to monitor its progress.

The AML Rule

On August 28, 2024, FinCEN issued a final rule ("AML Rule") subjecting certain investment advisers as described in more detail below ("Covered IAs") to AML requirements, including the adoption of AML procedures and the filing of SARs. Other requirements include designation of an AML officer, an independent audit of the AML program, and other Bank Secrecy Act ("BSA") reporting and recordkeeping requirements. Notably, the AML Rule expands the definition of "financial institution" under the BSA to include Covered IAs. Compliance with the AML Rule is required by January 1, 2026.

Examinations of Covered IAs under the AML Rule will be conducted by the SEC.

Covered IAs

The AML Rule is applicable to SEC-registered investments advisers ("RIAs") and investment advisers that are exempt reporting advisers (i.e., advisers claiming a private fund adviser or venture capital fund adviser exemption). The requirements do not apply to RIAs that are: (i) mid-sized advisers, (ii) multistate advisers, (iii) pension consultants, or (iv) RIAs that do not report any assets under management. For Covered IAs with a principal place of business outside the United States ("U.S."), the AML Rule applies only with respect to their activities that: (i) take place in the U.S. or (ii) provide services to a U.S. person or a foreign-located private fund with an investor that is a U.S. person.

AML Program Requirements

The AML Rule requires each Covered IA to establish a written AML program that is "risk-based" and "reasonably designed to prevent the investment adviser from being used for money laundering, terrorist financing, or other illicit finance activities." The minimum requirements include:

  • The development of internal policies, procedures, and controls . Covered IAs must review services and products offered and the nature of their customers in order to identify potential susceptibility to money laundering and other illicit activity.
  • The designation of a compliance officer . Covered IAs must designate a qualified person responsible for implementing and monitoring AML requirements.
  • An ongoing employee training program . Covered IAs must ensure that employees are trained in AML requirements and trained to recognize signs of potential money laundering and other illicit activity.
  • An independent audit function to test the programs . The AML program must be subject to independent testing either by the Covered IA's employees or a qualified outside party.

To comply with the AML Rule, AML programs must be approved, in writing, by the adviser's board of directors or similar body, and the program must be made available for inspection by FinCEN or the SEC.

Suspicious Activity Reporting

The AML Rule requires Covered IAs to file SARs with FinCEN concerning transactions: (i) that are "conducted or attempted by, at or through" the Covered IA; (ii) that involve or aggregate at least $5,000 in funds or other assets; and (iii) which the adviser knows, suspects, or has reason to suspect:

  • Involve funds derived from illegal activity or are intended or conducted to hide or disguise funds or assets derived from illegal activity;
  • Are designed, whether through structuring or other means, to evade the requirements of the BSA;
  • Have no business or apparent lawful purpose, and the adviser knows of no reasonable explanation for the transaction after examining the available facts; or
  • Involve the use of the adviser to facilitate criminal activity.

As noted above, the regulation relates to transactions that are conducted " by, at, or through " a Covered IA. This would include, for example, when a Covered IA directs a custodian to execute a transaction or when a customer provides instructions for a Covered ID to pass on to a custodian.

Portfolio Company Implications

While FinCEN excluded non-advisory services from the scope of the AML Rule, which include managerial or operational decisions at portfolio companies, an adviser's AML program cannot entirely exclude consideration of portfolio companies as FinCEN does anticipate that advisers will file SARs to report certain information the adviser receives through portfolio company due diligence. Other examples highlighted by FinCEN which may create an obligation to file a SAR related to a portfolio company include when the adviser: (i) is approached by a limited partner about unusual access to technology developed by a portfolio company; (ii) becomes aware a limited partner has reached out to a portfolio company for such information; or (iii) is asked to obscure participation by an investor in a particular transaction to avoid notification to government authorities.

Three Key Takeaways

  • The AML Rule requires Covered IAs to adopt and maintain an "anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism" program.
  • While many Covered IAs have AML policies in place, those policies may need to be modified to comply with the AML Rule's requirements and to implement SAR filing policies and procedures.
  • Covered IAs, including ERAs, have not previously been required to report suspicious activities to FinCEN, which is an area where other financial institutions have faced regulatory liability (i.e., for failing to file SARs).

But what if you want to invest for the really long term? Not 10 or 15 years, but 30, 40 or even 50 years?

This is how many pension funds invest. They don’t worry about daily market gyrations. They worry about long-term themes, globalization, demographics and other factors, and try to figure out how to make money off long-term trends.

A trend might only be an idea today, so this type of investing can be risky. But it can certainly be rewarding as well if you are both right and have the time to see that trend become a reality.

Here are five possible very long-term trends that might be investable ideas.

Artificial intelligence

We know you are saying, “That’s a current trend,” and, yes, it is, but we think it is absolutely here to stay. It has probably barely started.

Like the internet in 1997, we do not really know where AI is going to take the world . It may be very helpful or it could be very disruptive. Entire industries could be replaced. Companies that properly utilize it might see profit margins soar and stock prices surge, too. Companies that miss the boat might go out of business.

At some point, companies will need to decide if the money spent on AI was worth it. We think, in most cases, it will be. Better productivity and higher profit margins will be powerful drivers for companies.

For stock pickers, there will be losers and winners in the AI game. The hardware sector has run already. Software and data analytic stocks might be next. After that, who really knows? Certainly, cybersecurity stocks could be winners. AI likely makes it far easier for scammers, so security is going to be a very big concern down the road.

This theme is not exactly new, but we think it will get much more traction. Consumers want to live longer and better. Already, there are drug companies extending the life of dogs, and we wonder how long it will take to get to human trials. We know of more than 20 companies already working on life-extending products in such areas as cellular reprogramming, body part replacement, young blood injection, cloning and genetic editing.

There are hundreds of snake-oil companies looking to make a quick buck from boomers seeking to extend life. But there are also real companies, backed by billionaires, doing real research and starting to see breakthroughs. This will become a much bigger industry — and investment theme — over the next 50 years.

This investment theme could be tricky, but it could be a big one. The legacy theme is a derivative of what is already occurring. You know when some rich guy donates $20 million to a hospital and gets a surgery wing named after him? This ensures his name lives on long after he’s gone.

Aging, rich baby boomers are going to want the same feeling. They don’t have the $20 million, but they are very well off and might start looking for ways to ensure their long-term legacy. Let’s face it, no one is going to remember you in 200 years. But some sort of legacy, monument, recurring advertisement or something along those lines would ensure your name and memory last longer.

Years ago, there were companies selling the naming rights to stars in our galaxy. Name a star after yourself and you will always be present in the universe. This made those companies lots of money, but we are looking for something closer to Earth and more legal (the only body that can name stars is the International Astronomical Union).

Demographics

An aging population is becoming an issue in many countries. Investing in this theme can cover a wide area: age care, hospitals, drug companies, housing, estate planning and so on. Companies that can successfully target aging consumers are likely to see faster growth.

There is also a big debate on whether rich baby boomers are going to transfer their wealth or spend it. There is another debate on how governments can possibly fund pensions if there are fewer young workers on the contribution side. When investing, we suggest asking yourself how your prospective company’s business is going to be impacted by an aging population.

Urbanization and digital infrastructure

People continue to leave their rural lives behind and flock to cities in nearly every country on the planet. This means better jobs, more excitement and more service for them. Thus, this trend is likely going to continue for decades.

Investment opportunities abound from this shift. Companies can establish the necessary infrastructure to cater to both people’s move to cities and their rapidly growing and changing digital needs. As the citizens of developing countries become wealthier, they are going to want to buy cars, smartphones, digital TVs and everything else that can make their lives better and easier.

New technologies are bound to emerge and the companies that can capture market share of this new trend could do very well.

New research: American biopharmaceutical investment in R&D drives transformational innovation

U.S. biopharmaceutical companies are at the forefront of developing transformational medicines and vaccines that change patients’ lives, lower health system costs and contribute to a healthier society.

research topics in investment

A new study , conducted by researchers at Johnson & Johnson, Harvard University and Analysis Group, highlights the magnitude of biopharmaceutical investment in research and development (R&D) and its profound impact on advancing medicines for patients — both in the U.S. and abroad. These findings underscore the critical role biopharmaceutical companies play in driving the transformational innovations that change how we fight and prevent disease to help solve the biggest health care challenges the U.S. faces.

Here are key takeaways:

  • Biopharmaceutical companies are investing in R&D on an immense, global scale. The study indicates that global biopharmaceutical R&D investment is significant, totaling $276 billion across 4,191 global companies in 2021. This analysis provides a more comprehensive view of R&D investment than existing estimates, accounting for both publicly traded and privately owned companies, and for companies that don’t yet have a product on the market and those with at least one approved product.
  • This study puts that share at more than a third (34%) in the U.S., significantly higher than commonly cited estimates of 20-25%.
  • Nearly half (48%) of all global biopharmaceutical companies are headquartered in the U.S., developing life-saving innovations at our doorstep every day.
  • U.S.-based biopharmaceutical companies are responsible for nearly twice as much R&D investment as companies based in all the countries of Europe combined, with companies headquartered in the U.S. contributing 55% of worldwide R&D investment compared to 29% for companies headquartered in Europe.

The industry-driven R&D contributions outlined in the report fuel continued innovation and medical breakthroughs for patients, underscoring why we need commonsense policies. These policies include robust intellectual property protections, science-based regulatory agencies and payment and reimbursement that rewards innovation and patient-centric solutions.

U.S. biopharmaceutical companies are at the forefront of developing transformational medicines and vaccines that change patients’ lives, lower health system costs and contribute to a healthier society. Just take what transformational innovation has done for hepatitis (HCV) treatment savings: since curative medications for HCV were approved in 2013, Medicaid has saved an estimated $15 billion in avoided health care costs — and cumulative savings are expected to reach $43 billion by 2026. Meanwhile, childhood vaccines — another cost-effective intervention for fighting disease — have prevented over one million early deaths and can prevent 18 dangerous or deadly diseases.

We need to protect the research and development process and reinforce the spirit of innovation and leadership that allows us to do the impossible today and in the future.
