He is often termed as the little Master or the Master Blaster by many fans on the field and off the field, he is considered to be the God of cricket because of his accomplishments.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Early Life and Career:

Sachin Tendulkar was born in a middle-class family and he was very interested in cricket. Sachin took up cricket at the age of eleven and was very popular due to the school tournaments. He came into the limelight with a performance at his school tournament where he played an innings which is considered to change his life. He held a record partnership of 664 runs with Vinod Kambli playing in a school tournament. That inning allowed the selectors to see the talent and it is considered to be the inning that changed Sachin’s life as he became famous in a fortnight. Because of that inning, people all around the country got to know about a 16 years old kid that bats till the bowlers collapse. The Indian cricket team selectors did not waste time in selecting him and before anyone could have imagined Sachin Tendulkar was selected for the series against Pakistan only at the age of 16.

On 15 November 1989, Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut against Pakistan in Karachi. Pakistan’s cricket team was known for its bowling during those days where the combo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were considered to be the most dangerous bowling duo. But Sachin faced them gracefully and even made a few runs. A 16 years old boy was able to face the most feared bowlers of that time which opened the doors for him to be selected for future cricket matches and a chance to represent the Indian National team. Sachin Tendulkar in his autobiography has mentioned that the series against Pakistan was memorable to him as he got a chance to meet and learn to form his idols such as Kapil dev and Sunil Gavaskar.

The Rise of Sachin Tendulkar

During the years 1994-1999, Sachin Tendulkar was in his twenties and his performance was at its peak. He opened the batting against New Zealand in 1994 and made 84 runs from just 49 balls, He then went on and scored his first ODI century against Australia. It took him around 78 ODI’s to score his first century but it was worth the wait. During the1996 World Cup, Sachin went on and became the leading run-scorer in the tournament and he also scored two centuries during that tournament.

After the World cup tournament, Sachin played a great innings against Pakistan at Sharjah. Tendulkar made another century and also had the highest second-wicket partnership with Navjot Singh Sidhu. India then went on to win that match against Pakistan.

Sachin Tendulkar was again tested when India toured Australia in the year 1998. Tendulkar had scored three consecutive centuries before the Australian tournament; Shane Warne, the leg spinner had dismantled top-class batsmen before the tournament. All eyes were on the clash between Sachin Tendulkar, the Indians best batsman, and Shane Warne, Australia’s most feared spinner.

Tendulkar went on and scored an unbeaten 204 runs in the first test and also dismantled the bowling of Shane Warne where he conceded 111 runs to Tendulkar. Australia lost the match to India within three days and it was all because of the exceptional batting that a twenty years old had shown. The bad luck for Australia continued as Tendulkar went on and scored two consecutive centuries. The twin knocks by Sachin Tendulkar are known as the ‘Desert Storm’ as they allowed Tendulkar to show his supremacy to the world.

Sachin Tendulkar’s performance in the ICC 1998 quarterfinal at Dhaka paved the way for India’s entry into the semifinals in which he scored 141 runs and also took four Australian wickets. In March 1999, the inaugural Asian test championship was held between India, Pakistan, and Srilanka in which during the second test Tendulkar went on and scored his 19th international test century.

Sachin again showed his class in a Test against Pakistan at Chepauk in 1999, where he scored 136 in the fourth innings and made sure that India had a good start. Despite all his effort, India lost the match to Pakistan by 12 runs. During the 1999 Cricket World cup, Sachin faced a tragic loss as his father, Professor Ramesh Tendulkar passed away. Sachin flew back to India to attend the final rituals of his father which led him to miss the match against Zimbabwe. However, Sachin returned to the world cup and scored another century against Kenya. India went on and won the match. This shows the character that Sachin has for the country. Despite his father’s death, he was determined to make India win the match and progress further in the tournament.

During the 2003 Cricket World cup tournament, Sachin was the highest run-scorer where he scored 673 runs in 11 matches and helped India reach the final. In the final match, India lost the world cup to Australia but Sachin Tendulkar was given the man of the tournament award.

“Don’t stop chasing your dreams because dreams do come true.” – Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, also known as Master Blaster, Little Master and Bombay Bomber, is one of the finest cricketers the world has ever witnessed. He comes from a very humble background. His father was a Marathi language teacher. Sachin took an interest in playing cricket at the age of eleven and made his test debut against Pakistan in Karachi at the age of sixteen.

He is the one and the only player to have one hundred international centuries to his name and holds many other mind-blowing records till this date. Sachin Tendulkar is not considered as merely a cricketer in our country but is worshipped and regarded as equivalent to god.

Early Years and Rise of a Career

Tendulkar was considered as a bully in his early schooling years. To keep him from being mischievous, he was introduced to the gentleman’s game. He took a very fond liking to this sport and practised endlessly for days and nights. To motivate him further, his coach used to put a one-rupee coin on his stumps and say that whoever could dismiss little Sachin, would be the winner of the coin. And if no one could get him out, then the coin would rightfully be given to Tendulkar himself. Tendulkar still considers his thirteen won coins as one of his most invaluable possessions.

Indian selectors noticed Sachin in a school tournament game. He was selected to represent Bombay in the Ranji Trophy at the age of fourteen. Before playing as a complete opening batsman for India, Sachin also played his part as a ball boy and as a substitute. In his test match debut against Pakistan, he took a blow to his nose by the ball bowled to him by Waqar Younis. He did not take any medical assistance even though blood was gushing out and continued to deliver excellent innings.

After this, Tendulkar even managed to hit two centuries against the Australian team, which was considered as invincible during those times. In 1996, Sachin Tendulkar took over as the captain of the Indian cricket team for two continuous tenures. Unfortunately, he could not live up to the expectations and hopes of his country’s people as a captain and the Indian teamed performed below par or poorly under his captain-ship. He was the one who recommended and suggested the name of Mahendra Singh Dhoni to be chosen for the captaincy post to the then BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) president, Sharad Pawar.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Life Post Retirement

Sachin retired from cricket on November 15, 2013, after entertaining the Indian as well as the foreign crowds for a long 24 years. Tendulkar never had any intention of completely moving away or abandoning the sporting world, which he made very clear. After retiring, he continued being a mentor to the younger and newer players of the Mumbai Indians IPL (Indian Premier League) team. Sachin even bought a football team of his own in the Indian Super League and named them Kerala Blasters.

Essay on Sachin Tendulkar | My Favourite Sportsman | Short Biography

March 17, 2018 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is a former Indian batsman, and is one of the best sportspersons of all time. Born in 1973 in Mumbai, he went on to smash all exiting records from a very early age and eventually became the most prominent talent the cricketing world had ever witnessed.

The highest run scorer in test cricket as well as one day internationals, his list of cricketing records knows no bound.

He had won every single major cricketing award which is to be won, and has left his mark in other fields too, such as being the owner of the Kerala Blasters team in the Indian Super League, or being a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.

Table of Contents

Sachin Tendulkar was born on 24 th  April, 1973 to a reputed Marathi novelist Ramesh Tendulkar, and insurance worker Rajni Tendulkar. He has three elder siblings- two brothers and one sister, all from Ramesh’s previous marriage. Legends say that he was named after the famous music composer Sachin Dev Burman.

Sachin’s career began with playing for his society’s cricket team, where he was noticed by Ramakant Achrekar. Achrekar was impressed by his skills, and asked his parents to change his school to Sharadashram Vidyamandir, as it had proper sports facilities and had already produced many famous cricketers.

He also started to coach Tendulkar at Shivaji Park, and Tendulkar credits him till date for playing a pivotal role in a famous cricketer. Apart from school cricket, Tendulkar started participating in club cricket as well. He was also enrolled in the MRF Pace Foundation as a fast bowler.

However, on noticing his batting, Dennis Lillie (former Australian cricketer) suggested him to focus on the same. The first turning point of Sachin’s life was the record unbroken partnership of 664 runs between him and his friend Vinod Kambli, which was the highest at that time in any form of cricket.

This took place in a match against St. Xavier’s High School in the Lord Harris inter-school shield, in the year of 1988.

Style of playing

Sachin Tendulkar is an all-rounder, excelling in both batting and bowling. He is a left-handed person, but uses his right hand dominantly while playing.

A right-hand batsman, Tendulkar is also a bowler, practicing off spin, leg spin, and medium pace. He has employed many modern and unorthodox stroked into his batting style, like the paddle sweep, and different forms of scoop and slash. He has also captained various teams across various formats, including the national team of India.

Early career of Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin played his debut test match against Pakistan in November, 1989, in Karachi, when he was only 16 years old.

However, he failed to leave a mark, as he scored only 15 runs in the match, and his performance in the entire series was overall unimpressive.

On his England tour, in 1990, he scored his first international century (119 not out) in Old Trafford, and began to lay the basis of a reserved spot for himself in the team.

His peak performance was during his 20s, between the years 1993-1999, where he built a reputation as one of the world’s best openers.

His performance in the world cups was especially outstanding. A touching incident was that of the 1999 world cup, where he scored a century on the very next day after performing the last rites of his father, to whom he dedicated this score.

Tendulkar was also made the captain of the Indian team, and served two stints in that role, none of which were very successful. He took over the role in 1996 and the performance of the team was exceedingly disappointing in the next year and a half.

He later succeeded Azharuddin to become the captain once again, but to no avail. Eventually, things improved when Sourav Ganguly became the captain of the Indian team in the year of 2000.

It is said that captaincy created an unnecessary burden for tendulkar which adversely affected his stints both as a batsman and as a captain. He later captained the IPL team Mumbai Indians and other teams for exhibition matches, etc.

Later Career

Sachin’s career during the early years of this century started to deteriorate, and people started raising concerns over his possible removal from the team. He chose to answer all such critiques through his stellar performance in the 2003 world cup which even took the India team to the finals.

He scored 673 runs in eleven matches in the tournament. Very soon, he became the first cricketer to score 10,000 runs and take 100 wickets in one day internationals. The next world cup in 2007 saw him in an all time low. His rise to his earlier form resumed during India’s tour to Australia during 2007-08.

Eventually, he became the very first cricketer to score a double century in a one-day match, which was earlier seen as an impossible task. He achieved this feat against South Africa in 2010. But what can be referred to as perhaps his best achievement is 100 international centuries (including both tests and one day internationals), the last of which came against Bangladesh at Mirpur.

He also served an instrumental role for India to win the 2011 world cup, and the final match at Wankhede (which is also his home ground) was an emotional moment for him indeed. He retired from international cricket, owing to poor performance, in November, 2012, leaving fans heartbroken all throughout the world.

Life after Retirement

After retirement, his major focus was the Indian Premier League, in which he represented Mumbai Indians as a player and later as a mentor; and the Champions’ League- both of which he went on to win in his career.

Although he was not an outstanding T20 player, the agile nature and beautiful stroked delivered by him is a rare sight in today’s cricket, which is hell bent on discarding the textbook techniques.

His biography was released both as a book- ‘Playing It My Way’, co-authored by Boria Majumdar, released in 2014- and as a movie, ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’, directed by James Erskine.

In April, 2012, he was nominated by the president as a member of the Rajya Sabha, and he continues to hold this prestigious post. He was involved with the ISL as well, as the owner of the Kerala Blasters team, and continues to play exhibition cricket matches and tournaments till date.

He was also the first Indian sportsperson to win the Bharat Ratna award. At present, he resides in Mumbai with his wife Anjali, and his children- Arjun and Sana.

  Conclusion

Sachin Tendulkar, often referred to as the greatest cricketer of all time, is a humble yet talented, sincere, and dedicated human being. There is so much to learn from him, as a person as well as a cricketer.

The living legend of the cricket-world and a batsman par excellence was born on 24th April, 1973 in Mumbai in a middle class family, as the youngest of four children. His father was a well known Marathi novelist and his mother worked for an insurance company. In fact, he was named after the family’s favourite music director, Sachin Dev Burman. He was sent to Sharadashram Vidyamandir School where the fever of cricket caught him at the tender age of 11. In a match for Harris Shield, he made a huge partnership of 664 runs with his friend and international team-mate, Vinod Kambli. In 1988, he scored a 100 not out, his first-ever century in a first class match for Bombay against Gujarat. His first international appearance was against Pakistan at Peshawar, in an abandoned one-day match where he crushed Abdul Qadir and Co. He made his international debut at the age of 16 against Pakistan at Karachi where Waqar Younis bowled him out at a mere score of 15 runs.

Incidentally, Waqar Younis too had made his debut in that very match. In the next innings, he scored his maiden test 50 at Faisalabad. However, the rest of the series went by quietly, but by then Sachin had showed all the potential signs of a great cricketer. The determination, the strong will power, the ease of this young lad from Mumbai, against such a tough side impressed one and all.

His One Day International debut was even more disappointing. This time Waqar Younis dismissed him without any run. He then went on to a tour of New Zealand where he was caught at 88 by the former Indian Coach, John Wright. Tendulkar here lost a chance of becoming the youngest centurion in Test cricket.

Later in 1990 in his tour of England, he finally scored a Test century. But it was in 1991-92 during his tour to Australia that he made his presence felt as a true and a great batsman.

Since then Sachin has performed remarkably and played cricket- both in and outside India. He has been selected as the Man of the Match 13 times in Test cricket and four times as the Man of the Series- both times in Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Sachin’s first ODI century was made on 9th September, 1994 against Australia at Colombo. His performance has been beyond imagination with a great record of 51 Test centuries and 48 centuries in One-Day Internationals.

Sachin has become a sports icon for not only the youngsters of the nation but also across the globe. At a young age of 19, Sachin was invited as an overseas player by the Yorkshire County of England for the first time in 130 years. He also has to his honour the highest number of runs in One-Day Internationals and the maximum number of centuries in both One days and Test cricket. In India, this star shone even more brightly. In a country suffering from economic crisis, he was hailed as a symbol of hope. A newspaper dubbed him as the ‘Last Hero’ for his home country. In December 2005, he made his record breaking 35th century in Test cricket. In June 2007, he became the first player to make 15,000 runs in one-day internationals.

In 2010, he again stormed the record books, when he became the first batsman to score 13,000 runs in Test cricket. Just one month later, he cracked a double century against South Africa. He was named the ICC Cricketer of the year 2010.

Although, he is a top-order batsman, rather an opening batsman to be exact, Sachin has proved himself useful for the country at any position. He has also proved to be an effective wicket taker in time of need as an off-break bowler. Sachin is at his best even at taking wickets. He has 45 Test wickets to his credit and has a bowling average above 40. He also has another record of playing Test Matches on 52 different grounds ahead of Azharuddin and Kapil Dev. Moreover, he holds a record with Brian Lara to score the fastest 10,000 mighty runs in just 1 95 innings.

Recent News

Sachin Tendulkar (born April 24, 1973, Bombay [Mumbai], India) is an Indian professional cricket player, considered by many to be one of the greatest batsmen of all time. In 2012, he became the first cricketer to score 100 centuries (100 runs in a single innings) in international play.

Tendulkar was given his first bat when he was 11 years of age. As a 14-year-old, he used it to score 329 out of a world-record stand of 664 in a school match. A year later he scored a century on his first-class debut for Bombay (Mumbai), and at age 16 years 205 days he became India’s youngest Test (international) cricketer, making his debut against Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989. When he was 18 he scored two centuries in Australia (148 in Sydney and 114 in Perth), and in 1994 he scored 179 against the West Indies . In August 1996, at age 23, Tendulkar was made captain of his country’s team.

Although India was defeated in the semifinals of the 1996 World Cup, Tendulkar emerged as the tournament’s top run scorer, with 523 runs. In 1998 he was chosen for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest award given to an Indian athlete, for his outstanding performance in the 1997–98 season. India was defeated by Australia in the 1999 World Cup, failing to advance past the round of six, and was soundly defeated by both Australia and South Africa in series later that year. In the 2003 World Cup, however, Tendulkar helped his team advance as far as the finals. Though India was again defeated by Australia, Tendulkar, who averaged 60.2, was named the man of the tournament.

Tendulkar made history in December 2005 when he scored his record-breaking 35th century in Test play against Sri Lanka . The feat was accomplished in a total of 125 Tests and allowed Tendulkar to surpass the prolific Indian run scorer Sunil Gavaskar . In June 2007 Tendulkar reached another major milestone when he became the first player to record 15,000 runs in one-day international (ODI) play, and in November 2011 he became the first batsman to score 15,000 runs in Test play. One month later he scored a historic “double century” in a contest against South Africa, becoming the first man in history to record 200 runs in a single innings of ODI play. He was named the 2010 International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricketer of the Year. In an ODI match against Bangladesh in March 2012, Tendulkar scored his record-setting 100th international century—which included both Test (51 centuries) and ODI (49 centuries) play. He retired from ODI cricket later that year, and in 2013 he ended a six-year stint with the Indian Premier League (as a member of the Mumbai Indians) and retired from Test cricket, ending his playing days with records for the most career international runs (34,357) and Test runs (15,921). Throughout his long career Tendulkar was consistently ranked among the game’s best batsmen. He was often likened to Australia’s Don Bradman in his single-minded dedication to scoring runs and the certainty of his strokeplay off both front and back foot.

In 2012 Tendulkar became a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper chamber of the Indian parliament—the first active athlete to join that body; he was nominated to the post, and his term ended in 2018. In 2014 he became the first sportsman to receive India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna . Tendulkar was inducted into the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame in 2019.

On September 9, 1994, the cricketing world witnessed a significant milestone when Sachin Tendulkar scored his maiden century in One Day Internationals (ODIs). This achievement came during a Singer World Series match against Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. For a batter who would go on to set numerous records, this century was not just another score—it was the beginning of an era.

A long-awaited milestone

Sachin Tendulkar's journey to his first ODI century was not an easy one. Having made his ODI debut in 1989, it took him nearly five years and 78 matches to reach this landmark. Before this, Tendulkar had scored 17 fifties, often getting close but unfortunately not quite reaching the coveted three-figure mark. His initial struggles in the format were evident, with Tendulkar scoring ducks in his first two ODI innings and taking a while to find his footing. However, things started to change when he was promoted to open the innings for India during a tour of New Zealand in March 1994. His aggressive 82 off 49 balls in that game signalled his intent and forced the team management to send him up the order.

The match on September 9, 1994, was the third of the series, and India faced a formidable Australian side. Tendulkar opened the innings with Manoj Prabhakar and quickly took charge. He reached his half-century in just 43 balls, showcasing his trademark shots and aggressive stroke play. By the time he reached his century, Tendulkar had already hit eight boundaries and two sixes, finishing with 110 runs off 130 balls. His innings helped India post a competitive total of 246 for 8.

Australia, in response, could only manage 215, giving India a 31-run victory. Mark Waugh’s 61 was the only significant contribution from the Australian side, as India’s bowlers ensured the win. Tendulkar was named the Player of the Match.

Turning point in Sachin's career

This century was more than just a personal milestone for Tendulkar; it marked a turning point in his career. Before this hundred, Tendulkar had scored 2,126 runs in ODIs at an average of 32.70. After this match, his game evolved, and he became one of the most consistent and prolific run-scorers in ODI history. Tendulkar went on to score 49 ODI centuries and 18,426 runs.

Tendulkar’s maiden ODI century in Colombo also set the tone for India’s success in the tournament, as they went on to win the Singer World Series. This century is often seen as the moment when Tendulkar transformed from a promising young talent into a batting legend.

In retrospect, September 9, 1994, was not just another day in cricket; it was the day when Sachin Tendulkar truly announced his arrival on the world stage, beginning a journey that would inspire millions of cricket fans around the globe. His legacy, built on numerous records and unforgettable innings, began with this first century in ODIs, making it a historic moment in the annals of cricket which culminated with the batting legend scoring his 49th ODI ton against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2012, which also happened to be a special one.
