The Writers Workshop is based in Sheffield, UK, but serves writers everywhere by providing events and workshops that focus on:

Hive Young Writers

Hive Young Writers Sheffield is a free writing group for young people aged 14 to 19. It is held at the Central Children's Library fortnightly on Wednesdays during term time, 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The group supports young people to develop their writing through a wide range of creative writing workshops, visiting writers and related writing projects and opportunities. The group is informal and friendly and refreshments are provided. You don’t have to think you’re a great writer to attend, you just need a keenness to try new things!

Over 50 and love talking about sport? 

Whether it is cricket, rugby, football, boxing, snooker or athletics, share your sporting memories with other sports fans over old photographs, newspaper articles and memorabilia.

Our Innovator in Residence, Roger Tipple, runs free information sessions where you can discuss your ideas, ask advice and draw upon his vast experience in the world of Business and Intellectual Property (IP). Roger is a serial innovator who has created, developed and exploited his own inventions and other people's and whose company, Tipple Associates, has many years’ experience in successful product innovation.

Creative Writing Group Overview

The creative writing group encourages members to express themselves, to use writing as a form of exploring ideas, characters, situations - real or imagined - and looking at things or expressing things from differing perspectives.

Some people find it easier to express through writing as they can take the time to think about what they want to say and how they want to say it. Many people like to be able to edit their thoughts and ideas before they make them public and learning how to use writing to help focus thought van be very beneficial.

Service users have been very honest and have shared some examples of the challenges of military life and the impact it can have on them and their families:

Creative Writing Group’s Success at Magic Pen Competition

Our members achieved two out of the three top spots at the 2023 ‘Magic Pen’ writing competition with their stories based around Sheffield landmarks.

Part of the ‘Off The Shelf Festival of Words’, the ‘Magic Pen’ competition invites Sheffield writers with a learning disability, autism or other neurodiversity to submit an original short story. For 2023, all entrants were asked to include a Sheffield landmark in their tale.

Our weekly Creative Writing group were eager to create original stories for the competition, and their talents did not go unnoticed. Our member Sara Skundric was awarded third place for her story set at The Lyceum Theatre, and Jason Hinchcliffe was awarded second place for his story inspired by the iconic city-centre Pete McKee mural ‘The Snog’. You can read their winning entries below.

The Landlord and the Landlady

The pub and the picture created by Pete McKee. Pete McKee created lots of other art around Sheffield and this one is called The Snog. I think they are the Landlord and Landlady of the pub which is near to the walk in centre and is in the middle of all Sheffield. The picture of the Landlord and Landlady is iconic. I am imagining I go in the pub and I see them. In my imagination, the Landlady is called Suzanne and she invites me in for drinks and food. She is always cleaning the tables and talking to the customers. Suzanne always talks to her husband for ordering drinks and food for the customers. It’s as if the old pub is from the 19 th century. The Landlord is called Joe and him and his wife and family run the pub. In the summer days, please come and have pub lunches with me, I’m going to be on my own.

The Tiger who got Seasick

My story is set at the Lyceum Theatre. I was watching Life of Pi but in my version the tiger got seasick and he didn’t want to swim in the water because it was too cold for him. I am like the tiger because I don’t like swimming when it is too cold either. The poor tiger has to drink water out of the tap instead because water is good for the tiger and good for me. The tiger got seasick because he drank too much water out of the tap which gave him a stomach ache and then he went on the boat too quickly. If the Lyceum really had a sea and a boat in it, the tiger would fall off into the sea and he can’t swim! Someone would have to come and rescue him. I could rescue him. When I rescued him, the tiger started to sneeze- ACHOO! A little girl heard the tiger sneeze and said “I’m going to come and kiss you because you are a nice tiger and I like to talk to you”. So the girl gave him a kiss and the tiger started to laugh. The little girl saved the tiger from sneezing and the tiger saved the little girl from being lonely by being her friend. Sheffield is a special place because everyone is friends with somebody which is really important because they help each other and look after each other, because that’s what friends do.

The CAST writing group is a friendly group which uses writing to promote mental wellbeing. The group is suitable for people of all abilities. You can go even if you don’t think of yourself as ‘a writer’.

The group runs weekly, every Wednesday.

The group is run by Neil from Creative Arts Support Team (CAST) a group of mental health service users, volunteers and workers who use arts for mental health and wellbeing.

• Writing meditation is a little-known technique to promote mindfulness.
• It’s about capturing your moment-by-moment thoughts on paper.
• It’s great for people who are frustrated by traditional meditation approaches.

Meditation is hard. It’s hard to get into a routine. It’s hard to let go of the expectation that you “should” be focused and calm while meditating. It’s even hard to not fall asleep while meditating! While there’s no hidden trick to make meditation easier, I’ve recently been experimenting with a different technique that I’ve found to be helpful: writing meditation.

The writing meditation I’m referring to is not journaling or creative writing, although the output looks somewhat like poetry. It’s an open mindfulness practice that happens to be done on paper. Here are the steps I take:

• Take a blank piece of paper and a pen
• Write down each thought that comes into my mind

But I think an example might help make this clearer. Here’s a recent writing meditation that I completed:

Breathe In through my nose Out through my mouth Pressure around my eyes Feeling the pen in my hand Sounds of a bird outside Noticing the breath in my chest Waiting Heart beating Am I doing this right? Sounds of cars going past I want it to be quiet Frustration Sensations of my feet against the ground Sounds of crickets Pressure again around my eyes Am I getting sick? Back to the breath Waiting My chest rising and falling with the breath Thoughts moving faster than my fingers Feeling the pen in my hand Is this a good place to stop? I’ll wrap up now

This is just a brief example, but you can see that I was mindfully aware of physical sensations (the breath in different parts of my body, the sensation of the pen in my hands, my feet against the floor), sounds (birds, cars, crickets) as well as thoughts (“am I getting sick?” “my thoughts are moving faster than my fingers” “I want it to be quiet”) and emotions (“frustration”).

The exercise helped me to get into a meditative state and was more focused than trying to notice all of this while just sitting and meditating, where it can be easy to get lost in the swirl of thoughts.

I’ve been using this technique for the past several years and have been surprised that it is not more commonly used. Have you tried this type of meditation before? Where did you learn it? Try it out for yourself and let me know how it goes!
