The Computer Science Department PhD program is a top-ranked research-oriented program, typically completed in 5-6 years. There are very few course requirements and the emphasis is on preparation for a career in Computer Science research. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for admission in a Stanford graduate program, applicants must meet:

• Applicants from institutions outside of the United States must hold the equivalent of a United States Bachelor's degree from a college or University of recognized good standing. See detailed information by region on  Stanford Graduate Admissions website. 
• Area of undergraduate study . While we do not require a specific undergraduate coursework, it is important that applicants have strong quantitative and analytical skills; a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science is not required.

1. Previously Earned Graduate Degree

If you have already earned a graduate degree in a related field, some universities will often waive GRE requirements based on previous experience. Doctor of Nursing Practice is an example of such a degree.

2. Work Experience

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering is excited to announce that our Computer Science M.S. and Computer Science Ph.D. programs no longer require, nor accept, the GRE exam as part of our application process.

"We're proud to join a wave of computer science departments making this change," said Associate Professor Daniel Keefe , the head of the department's Inclusiveness, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (CS-IDEA) committee. "This concrete action is a step towards addressing the longstanding underrepresentation of key demographics within the computing field."

This decision to remove the GRE from the admissions process is part of our ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts within the department. Located in Baldwin City, Kansas, Baker University’s students often find high-paying positions in their field. The storied university boasts a close connection with the United Methodist Church, though religious courses are not required for online Ph.D. students.

BU offers several online Ph.D. no GRE programs through its School of Education. Despite the university’s low cost, Ball State maintains a low 16-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio that extends to its online programs.

Instead of offering an online Ph.D. with no GRE requirements, Ball State hosts three Ed.D. and one Ed.S. degrees in a hybrid format. The three Ed.D. options in adult and community education, educational administration and supervision, and special education all primarily use online courses. Each degree requires around 90 credits to complete, though the university only requires students to complete half of the credits at Ball State.

Ball State charges a per-credit tuition rate for its online doctoral degree with no GRE, though most students receive some form of financial aid.

3. Bradley University

A mid-sized school, Bradley University offers an array of programs at every level. The university provides a quality education to its nearly 6,000 students in the greater Illinois area.

Bradley offers some programs doctoral programs online that do not require GRE scores, including a doctor of education in higher education administration. This program takes as few as seven months to complete, and students can finish the entire program online. Courses include doctoral research requirements and internships. Learners also select a focus in higher education leadership or community college leadership, each of which leads to specific career outcomes as postsecondary educators, administrators, or leaders.

Graduate students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants also submit a short essay, a professional resume, and two letters of recommendation.

4. Concordia University-Irvine

A Lutheran school located in the Southern California city of Irvine, Concordia University-Irvine extends beyond its prime location with its online programs. Those interested in an online doctoral degree without GRE requirements can consider the doctor of education in leadership .

The Ed.D. in leadership requires 46 credits and takes three years to complete. Learners select a specialization in educational administration, organizational change, or special education. The program takes place entirely online in both synchronous and asynchronous formats, though learners can complete the degree in a hybrid format. CUI requires some fieldwork experience, which includes travel to education sites.

While students do not submit GRE scores, CUI does require a transcript proving a master’s in education, a current resume, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of intent. CUI charges a per-credit tuition rate to all online learners.

5. Concordia University-Saint Paul

Based in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, Concordia University-Saint Paul provides an affordable Christian education both on campus and online. CSP graduates regularly enjoy successful careers with nonprofits, large businesses, or entrepreneurial startups.

None of CSP’s online graduate programs require GRE scores, so students interested in the online doctorate in education can focus on other application requirements. The online Ed.D. uses a combination of synchronous and asynchronous courses and utilizes a cohort system. Learners complete 17 courses with 64 credits, with courses delivered in an accelerated, seven-week format.

Online learners must commute to the St. Paul campus for doctoral residencies on two occasions. CSP also assigns students a leadership coach to mentor learners throughout the program. Graduates of the doctorate in education go on to various leadership positions with public and private schools, nonprofits, and government organizations.

6. Creighton University

Omaha-based Creighton University is a Catholic institution and one of the top private schools in the region. Creighton offers some of the best graduate-level online programs. The Ph.D. options set no GRE requirements.

Students choose from six online doctoral degree options . Credit requirements range from 54-143 depending on the degree, and all options require at least some on-campus study. For example, the business administration doctoral program is offered in a hybrid format while the interdisciplinary leadership education degree is online, with some on-campus residency requirements.

Creighton’s online doctoral degrees use rolling admissions. Applicants must demonstrate professional experience in the desired field of study and submit a resume, two letters of recommendation, two essays, and previous college transcripts.

7. Endicott College

Located near Boston, on the water in Beverly, Massachusetts, Endicott College teaches over 5,000 students. Endicott focuses on preparing its graduates for specific careers and provides flexible learning options for busy students.

The college offers four doctoral programs online , including several no GRE Ph.D. programs. The degrees take as few as three years to complete, though many learners study part time and take longer to finish their programs. Endicott’s general doctoral admission requirements include a current resume, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts. Some programs may require additional admission materials. Each doctoral program uses synchronous online courses along with some onsite clinical experience in Beverly.

All of Endicott’s online doctoral degrees use cohort groups of 15-20 students to build teamwork skills and connect students with one another. Busy adult learners can take advantage of Endicott’s accelerated one-week courses during the summer.

8. George Washington University

Located in the nation’s capital, George Washington University attracts learners from across the world and transforms students into leaders. GW boasts an impressive list of alumni, and the school’s extensive alumni network helps new graduates find positions within their fields.

Learners choose from an array of online doctoral programs , including Ph.D. no GRE options. Most of GW’s online options are in nursing and health science, though the university does offer doctoral degrees in systems engineering, engineering management, and occupational therapy. Each program sets different graduation requirements; for example, the Ph.D. in systems engineering requires 54 credits split between class-based courses and dissertation research. The program uses synchronous online courses, with the dissertation research being self-paced.

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s and master’s degree related to their field of study. GW requires a current resume and a minimum 3.5 GPA on previous college transcripts.

9. Georgia College & State University

Founded in 1889 as a women’s educational center, Georgia College now serves as a public liberal arts college. Located in Milledgeville, Georgia College provides students with a college town atmosphere just a short drive from Atlanta.

Georgia College applicants looking for Ph.D. programs with no GRE requirement can enroll in the nursing DNP . This online post-master’s program that takes just five semesters to complete. The program requires 37 credits, and aside from a one-week immersion experience, is delivered entirely online. Learners enter the online DNP once per year in the fall and enjoy a cohort system. Students can anticipate synchronous online courses.

While applicants do not submit GRE scores, the nursing DNP program does require an active RN license, verification of a completed MSN program, and several years of work experience as a nurse. Applicants also submit three letters of recommendation, a resume, previous college transcripts, and a statement of professional goals.

10. Gonzaga University

Located in Spokane, Washington, Gonzaga University provides students with a private, Jesuit education. The university continues to add new programs, and in recent years Gonzaga has begun offering some degrees entirely online.

Gonzaga only offers one online program for students looking for Ph.D. programs with no GRE: advanced nursing . The program offers incredible flexibility, delivering all courses online and providing students with online support six days a week. The program takes most students two years to complete. Learners must complete two immersions onsite in Spokane and 1,000 hours of practicum experience. Graduates of the program find leadership positions in healthcare systems.

As a post-master’s program, the DNP requires applicants first earn an MSN in nursing and hold an active RN license. Applicants also submit a resume, letters of recommendation, and previous transcripts.

11. Lewis University

Lewis University, a private, Catholic school based just southwest of Chicago, ranks among the best-valued private schools in the region. The midsized school teaches over 6,400 students.

The university offers 17 different programs entirely online , though only one option leads to a doctoral degree: the nursing DNP. This 30-credit program comes entirely online. Students must, however, complete at least 1000 residency hours and two one-day immersions onsite in Romeoville, Illinois. Most learners complete the program in two years, and Lewis arranges various forms of tuition assistance, including assistantships, employer discounts, and Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders discounts.

While Lewis sets no GRE requirements for the program, applicants must first complete their MSN at an accredited school and hold a current RN license. Applicants also submit official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a 500-word personal essay.

12. Maryville University of Saint Louis

While based in Saint Louis, Maryville University is a prominent online school, with over half of its 10,200 students learning online. The university offers most of its programs entirely online, including several no GRE doctoral programs.

Students interested in completing a doctoral degree online can choose the doctor of education in higher education leadership. The program utilizes a cohort system, keeping students on track while connecting them with fellow learners. While the program requires a residency, Maryville allows students to finish their residency entirely online. Full-time students in the education leadership program graduate in as few as 32 months.

To help learners achieve their goals, Maryville pairs students with a personal mentor. Maryville also lets students complete their coursework and dissertation research at the same time, making this program faster to complete than others.

13. Mount Carmel College of Nursing

Founded in 1903, Mount Carmel College of Nursing offers a Catholic-rooted education to nursing students at all levels. With locations in Columbus and Lancaster, Ohio, and several options online, MCCN helps nurses across the nation achieve their career goals.

MCCN offers one online doctoral degree option : a DNP. Learners select a track in clinical practice or executive leadership. MCCN allows students to specialize even further through specializations in clinical practice, healthcare, or academic nursing. All courses in the program come online, and graduates qualify for the national EBP certification. Full-time students finish the program in just 18 months.

This program does not require GRE scores, though applicants should hold an active RN license in Ohio before applying. Application requires a resume, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and an interview. MCCN charges a flat per-credit tuition fee for all courses in the program.

14. Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing & Allied Health

A private healthcare college based in Omaha, Nebraska Methodist College educates just over 1,100 learners. NMC takes a holistic approach to nursing and healthcare, teaching students to become effective community leaders.

Doctoral students looking to avoid the GRE can choose between two of NMC’s online options : education and leadership in healthcare or public health policy. Both programs use online classes designed to give learners maximum flexibility. Full-time students finish either option in just 24 months. Along with not setting any GRE requirements, NMC does not require students to complete a dissertation for either program.

Both doctoral options require applicants to first earn a master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA, preferably in a healthcare field. Other application requirements include a resume, admissions essay, and potentially an interview.

15. Quinnipiac University

Quinnipiac University embraced online learning in 2001, helping students complete coursework without commuting to campus. The university has built on that experience and now offers a robust collection of online degrees.

Both online doctoral degrees offered by Quinnipiac — the DNP and occupational therapy doctorate — do not require any GRE scores. However, they only accept current licensed professionals in their fields who hold a master’s degree. Learners complete at least 30 credits to finish the doctoral programs. Specific requirements depend on previous credits earned. All courses are offered online, with students earning clinical experience onsite at a location of their choice. Some learners study near Quinnipiac’s campus in Hamden, Connecticut.

Applicants must complete at least 1,000 hours of fieldwork — some of which can come from applicants’ master’s degrees — and submit a current resume. Other requirements include a current license, transcripts, and a personal statement.

16. Regis College

Founded in 1927, Regis College offers a Catholic-based education to 3,000 students both online and at its Boston campus. The college offers online programs meant to prepare students for in-demand careers in fields like healthcare, education, and business.

Regis’ online DNP sets no GRE requirements and gives students four tracks of study to choose from: an MSN-to-DNP with a specialization, a second specialization route, a doctorate online, and an MSN-DNP bridge option. All four use online courses, though specializations require learners to earn clinical experience onsite at healthcare facilities. Some specialization options include pediatrics, nurse education, and psychiatric mental health.

DNP students usually graduate in 24-36 months, though Regis allows learners to take up to 44 months to complete the degree. Regis also accepts transfer credits from other regionally accredited institutions. Applicants must submit college transcripts, a resume, two professional essays, and two letters of recommendation.

17. Regis University

A Jesuit university located in Denver, Colorado, Regis University serves as one of the top private schools in the region. Regis combines Catholic values with education, emphasizing service-based learning, and the importance of helping the global community.

The university offers two online doctoral degrees with no GRE requirements: a DNP and a doctor of occupational therapy. The DNP takes 31-36 credits to complete, and Regis charges the same per-credit rate to part- and full-time learners. The school offers specializations in advanced leadership in healthcare and advanced practice registered nursing. Specific graduation requirements vary depending on the specialization. Regis works with Creighton University for the doctor of occupational therapy, and learners apply for the program through Creighton.

Applicants for both programs should first complete a master’s degree, gain ample professional experience, and hold a current license in their field. Other requirements include a minimum 3.0 GPA and a background check.

18. The College of Saint Scholastica

With online options and locations across Minnesota, the College of Saint Scholastica provides students plenty of ways to earn a degree. In fact, graduate learners make up over one-third of the total student body.

Those looking to earn an online Ph.D. with no GRE requirements enroll in the transitional doctor of physical therapy. This innovative program offers options for foreign-trained physical therapists, and nearly 25% of CSS’ online doctoral students come from abroad. The doctor of physical therapy only requires 16 credits spread over just six courses, and students complete everything online. CSS charges a flat tuition rate for the entire program, so part-time learners do not pay more.

Applicants must first hold a master’s degree in physical therapy and earn professional experience. Next, applicants submit a personal essay and previous college transcripts.

19. Thomas Edison State University

Located in Trenton, New Jersey, Thomas Edison State University began as a school designed specifically for working adults. Today, the public school continues to offer quality programs to learners of all ages.

TESU offers a doctor of nursing practice and doctor of business administration, both of which come entirely online and set no GRE requirements. The programs use a cohort system, and learners receive one-on-one mentorship from TESU leadership. The 48-credit business administration degree comes with specialization in organizational leadership, human resource management, or general management. Students complete the program in as few as 32 months. The DNP takes just 18 months to complete full-time, and TESU accepts some transfer credits for the program.

Both doctoral degrees require learners to hold a master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA in a related field. Other application requirements include personal essays, transcripts, professional experience, and an interview with TESU faculty.

20. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign educates thousands of students on campus and online. The school currently offers over 90 programs entirely online, and students from around the world complete courses.

U of I offers eight doctoral programs online , including a doctoral human resource development program. This 64-credit Ph.D. with no GRE requirements teaches the skills necessary to become leaders within their organizations. Designed for current HR professionals, the degree includes some onsite training and development. However, the vast majority of course materials are offered online.

Application requirements vary by program, but all eight online doctoral degrees require some professional experience, and most only accept applicants with a master’s degree in a related field.

21. University of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota is the largest university in ND with over 13,500 students enrolled. UND boasts some of the lowest in-state tuition rates in the nation, and classes average just 24 students each.

Students choose from 12 different online doctoral programs , and those include Ph.D. with no GRE options. For example, the Ph.D. in Indigenous studies does not require GRE scores, though applicants should hold a master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The program requires 60 credits and takes three years to complete. Students can take every course in the program online.

Other online doctoral options at UND with no GRE requirements include nursing, occupational therapy, teaching and leadership, and petroleum engineering.

22. University of Southern California

One of the best public research universities in the West, the University of Southern California attracts top talent and prepares graduates to succeed in their careers. USC’s quality extends to learners across the country through its online programs.

Learners choose from an array of online graduate programs , such as the doctor of education in educational leadership. This doctoral program with no GRE requirements helps current educational professionals at the K-12 levels become leaders within their organization. Learners complete four components, including courses and a dissertation. USC requires a two-day immersion onsite in Los Angeles, though students complete the rest of the three-year program online.

Those interested in USC’s online doctoral degrees must submit transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal essays, and a resume. While USC sets no GRE requirements, some applicants may benefit from submitting test scores.

23. University of St. Francis

Based in Joliet, Illinois, the University of St. Francis recently celebrated 100 years of education excellence. The small school teaches under 4,000 students total, and it harbors fewer than 300 graduate students. However, USF still offers two online doctoral degree programs for professionals looking to continue their education.

Neither the online DNP nor doctor of education in educational leadership require GRE scores, though applicants must hold a master’s degree in their field. Both programs utilize online education with some onsite requirements. USF also stresses flexibility for both programs. The doctor in educational leadership, for example, comes with two concentrations: superintendent endorsement or leadership, learning, and stewardship.

Both online doctoral programs take roughly three years to complete, though specific program lengths vary. Applicants should hold a minimum 3.0 GPA on undergraduate and graduate transcripts and must interview with USF faculty.

24. Villanova University

Founded in 1842, Villanova University blends its Catholic tradition with modern educational techniques. The mid-sized school hosts nearly 11,000 students, and its location near Philadelphia helps students and graduates secure internships and jobs. Those that choose to earn a degree online benefit from Villanova’s extensive alumni network.

Villanova’s doctoral nursing program, a Ph.D. with no GRE requirements, comes entirely online. Villanova offers courses in the program synchronously, and new learners must commute to campus for two-three weeks during the summer. Aside from these requirements, Villanova’s Ph.D. in nursing offers incredible flexibility.

To avoid submitting GRE scores, applicants to Villanova must hold a master’s degree related to their field. Other admission requirements include a personal essay, interview with faculty, a valid RN license, and evidence of scholarly writing.

25. Wilkes University

A small school located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Wilkes University provides learners with low classroom sizes and plenty of personal attention. Students benefit from direct instruction, hands-on learning, and flexible learning options, including Wilkes’ online doctoral degrees .

Wilkes’ two online doctoral programs with no GRE requirements — a DNP and a doctor of education — both require applicants to first complete a master’s degree. Brown eliminates gre test requirement for 24 doctoral programs.

In enabling Ph.D. program leaders to drop the requirement to submit test scores, the Graduate School looks to attract talented, high-achieving students from an increasingly diverse pool of candidates.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — For prospective graduate students applying to enroll in the 2020-21 academic year and beyond, Brown University will no longer require Graduate Records Examination (GRE) test scores for admission to 24 of its Ph.D. programs.

Eliminating the requirement will enable the programs to attract a wider pool of applicants, Graduate School leaders said. The move adds to a growing array of initiatives at Brown to reduce barriers that discourage some students from groups historically underrepresented in higher education and from low-income backgrounds from applying for admission.

“The future success of graduate education at Brown depends on the diverse, innovative and intellectually independent candidates we admit and the varied skill sets they bring to their disciplines,” said Dean of the Graduate School Andrew G. Campbell. “By removing the Graduate School’s GRE requirement and allowing programs to decide whether to require the exam, we will broaden the talent pool of students who apply to and have access to graduate education at Brown.”

A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that the GRE is not always an accurate predictor of success in graduate school, Campbell said. In considering prospective doctoral students, Brown evaluates a wide range of factors, from academic strength and intellectual curiosity to research experiences, through application components including transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statements and in-person interviews.

“Twenty-four of our doctoral programs have decided that the GRE is not required for a holistic review of potential applicants to their disciplines,” Campbell added. “This, in conjunction with a new transitional stipend for newly matriculating doctoral students and our fully-funded Ph.D. and MFA programs, continues our work to ensure that a Brown education is accessible to students from all income groups and that all graduate students can thrive on campus.”

Brown faculty who direct individual Ph.D. programs evaluate applications from prospective students in consultation with leaders from the Graduate School. Already, GRE scores were considered as one among a wide variety of factors weighed as each applicant’s credentials are considered individually.

“We’re not just looking at scores — we’re looking at students,” said Marlina Duncan, associate dean of diversity initiatives at the Graduate School.

Financial considerations such as exam fees, GRE prep-course tuition or tutoring expenses — and logistical challenges such as finding transportation and taking time away from school or work to take the test — can discourage some prospective students, particularly from historically underrepresented groups or first-generation or low-income backgrounds, from applying.

Moreover, many academic leaders said the GRE does not capture a candidate’s predilection toward critical thinking, innovation and collaboration — three areas that are crucial to success in the Graduate School at Brown.

“We’re looking for the fire — we’re looking for the drive,” said Anita Zimmerman, graduate program director for Brown’s molecular pharmacology and physiology program. “We’re looking for the motivation from someone who isn’t daunted by obstacles and is willing to dive into research with creativity and an ability to solve difficult problems. Those kinds of indicators are not easy to put into numbers, but they’re much more useful and telling than a score on an exam that repeatedly has been shown to be a very poor predictor of student success.”

Zimmerman noted that in recent years, the program had already begun to decrease emphasis on GRE scores in lieu of recommendation letters, personal statements and interviews.

Ravit Reichman, director of graduate studies for the English program, agreed that test scores have been but one factor in the department’s evaluation of prospective students.

“Not once in my time at Brown have we had a substantive conversation about a candidate’s GRE scores,” Reichman said. “We’ve always focused more on a person’s curiosity and intellectual itinerary — that is, how they got to thinking about the ideas they think about, and how they express that on the page.”

The Graduate School’s decision to eliminate the overarching GRE requirement enables program leaders across Brown’s 51 doctoral programs to make individual choices about whether to continue to require scores. The 2020-21 application for admission is open now on the school’s website. The following academic programs will no longer require GRE scores:

Application Requirements

Computer science background requirements.

The Department of Computer Science does not require that applicants hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. However, applicants are expected to have a strong background in Computer Science. A suitable background would include courses in the following core areas:

• Data Structures
• Discrete Mathematics
• Assembly Language and Computer Organization
• Programming in a procedural language such as C, C#, C++, or Java.

Applicants are also expected to have taken several (but not necessarily all) courses in specialized areas:

• Operating Systems
• Programming Languages
• Artificial Intelligence
• Computer Networks
• Automata and Formal Languages
• Software Engineering

A year of college-level Calculus is also required. In general, experience gained working is not considered equivalent to successful completion of the courses listed above.

Grade Point Average

There is no minimum GPA required for admission. However, most applicants who are offered admission to our program have a GPA of at least 3.3 (out of 4.0). The grades in Computer Science, mathematics and related courses are more important than the overall GPA.

GRE scores are optional. 

Letters of Reference

If possible, letters of references should be written by faculty at a university previously attended. Letters of reference from Computer Science faculty are preferred, but references from employers are welcome. References should pay particular attention to academic achievements and evidence of independent, creative problem solving.

TOEFL/IELTS Scores

• If you are a permanent resident of the U.S., TOEFL is not required
• If you received a 4-year degree at an English-speaking institution (whether or not the institution is in the U.S.), TOEFL/IELTS is not required.
• If you received a 4-year degree at a non -English-speaking institution and a Master's degree from an English-speaking institution, TOEFL/IELTS is required. 
• Note that if you have a solid command of written and spoken English, TOEFL/IELTS waivers are possible! Contact via email,  [email protected] , explaining why you believe TOEFL/IELTS can be waived (include evidence such as verification of duties as a Teaching Assistant that required significant interactions in English, copies of expired TOEFL/IELTS scores, presentations at conferences in English, etc.). 

It is unusual that we offer admission to an applicant with an overall TOEFL score below 90 / IELTS below 6.5. Scores can be sent electronically to UVa at institution code B875. Some students with lower scores may be required to complete the UVA Summer English for Academic Purposes Program prior to admission.

PhD students are usually admitted with a financial aid package in the form of a First-Year Research Assistantship that allows students to explore research with various faculty members and find their best match. It is expected that students will join a research group by the end of their first year and then be supported as a Research Assistant (RA). This financial aid package includes a competitive stipend, tuition, fees, and health insurance coverage. Details of this award are given at the time of your notification of acceptance into the Computer Science PhD program.

Is the TOEFL/IELTS required?

International students must have an outstanding command of the English language in order to enroll at the University of Virginia. The TOEFL/IELTS exam is required of all applicants if the language first learned and spoken in the home is not English, and they are not permanent residents. However, TOEFL/IELTS is not required if the applicant has received a 4-year degree at an English-speaking institution (whether or not the institution is in the U.S.). (If the applicant has a 4-year degree from a non-English-speaking institution and a Master's degree from an English-speaking institution, TOEFL/IELTS is still required.) It is unusual that we offer admission to an applicant with an overall TOEFL score below 90 / IELTS below 6.5. 

I scored less than 22 on the Speaking section of TOEFL. Can I still apply?

We review all applications thoroughly, along a number of dimensions. It is unusual that we offer admission to an applicant with an overall TOEFL score below 90/ IELTS score of 6.5.

Where do I send my GRE and/or TOEFL/IELTS scores?

The Institution code for School of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Virginia for the GRE is 5820. The code for TOEFL is  B875. There is not a specific code for the Department of Computer Science.

I'm taking TOEFL/IELTS or GRE after your deadline (Dec 15). If I apply will these scores make it into my application and be seen by the admissions committee?

We will start evaluating applications soon after the Dec 15 deadline. Applicants should submit the most complete application they can, based on the information they have at the time (e.g., current test scores, even if new test scores are anticipated).Those applications that are complete will be considered first. We will continue to evaluate applications into early next year, until we have completed our offers. As we are reviewing applications, we will certainly consider updated scores as the arrive at the University of Virginia. There is no need to email us to tell us that new scores are being sent.

Should I mail or should I upload my materials with my application?

We strongly discourage applicants from mailing in any items that can be uploaded to avoid delays in your application review, and we ask that you not send duplicate copies of previously uploaded documents. I’ve submitted my application and all supporting materials. Why does my application status still show as incomplete?

We will fully review your application with unofficial test scores and unofficial transcripts. Your application will only show as "complete" when your application has been submitted, your official scores and transcripts have been received and all three letters of recommendations have been received. An application is complete for review with unofficial transcripts and self-reported scores, though the checklist will still show incomplete. Please note that all official transcripts are received in our main admissions office and scanned or entered into our system manually. If you feel that your materials should have been received by now, but are NOT showing up when you login to your account, please note that the Graduate Admissions Office processes a very large number of applications and it may take longer than expected for your documents/information to appear online (in your account). It is very likely that your materials have been received, but have not been loaded into our application system yet.

If I email you my information (e.g., GPA, GRE scores, etc.) before I apply, can you tell me the chance of being accepted?

The graduate admissions committee considers many factors in an application, including more than just GPA and test scores. In particular, letters of reference and your personal statement are extremely important. Therefore, we are unfortunately unable to provide any information before the committee considers your full application.

Our program accepts a large number of applicants each year from a diverse range of backgrounds. Our applicants come directly from undergraduate or master’s programs, as well as industry positions, and from within United States and numerous countries around the world.

The Application: General Advice

The most important question we ask when reviewing applications is "Will this individual excel at research?" Every part of your application is helpful insofar as it answers this question. The three major components of an application are the statement, letters of recommendation, and grades.

This is one of the most important parts of your application; it lets us get to know you and creates a narrative of your academic career and future plans. Before you write your statement, start by thinking about what you want us to learn about you. Make a list of important achievements, perspectives, and goals. Build your statement around this list. We are looking for students who have made the most of the opportunities they have been presented with and who are smart, creative, and motivated. Keep in mind that we also have your CV and letters of recommendation, so we don’t necessarily need a list of all your accomplishments. However, your statement can fill in the narrative around what you did and, more specifically, why you did it. What motivates you? What are your research interests and why? These details aren’t found elsewhere in your application, so focus on them in your statement.

There are a few things we suggest not including in your statement. While it’s tempting to give a rationale for why you are applying to our program, don’t include it if it’s uninformed. Consider: “I want to apply to Johns Hopkins because it’s one of the premiere academic programs.” We know that already! If you do have specific reasons to be interested in our program (e.g. location, a specific project, a faculty member, etc.), be sure to mention them.

In terms of your motivation, be specific! Don’t write: “I’ve wanted to do a PhD in CS since I was six years old.” We don’t trust that six-year-olds make good career decisions. If you write “I have always found AREA X fascinating,” explain why.

Letters of Recommendation

The two most important factors of a recommendation letter are: 1) select someone who knows you well, and 2) select someone who knows how to write a letter.

First, it’s tempting to ask Professor X. to write a letter for you because they are a well-known person in the field. While we can better contextualize letters from people we know, it’s only helpful if the letter contains meaningful information. If Professor X. writes, “I’ve met the applicant a few times and they seem sharp,” that’s not useful information. It’s more important to select someone who knows you well and can discuss your achievements in detail.

Second, your letter writer should know how to write a letter. Academic research programs look for different things than a company. We often read letters from work supervisors that say nice things, but don’t speak to the qualities we find most important.

Of course, it’s a balance. You want someone who knows you well, but they still need to know how to write a good letter of recommendation.

We understand that three letters are a lot, especially for an undergraduate applying directly to a PhD program. We don’t expect each candidate to have three amazing letters. Your choices should be about balance: you want people who know you well, can write good academic letters, and know the research field. Use your choice of your three letter-writers to create this balance.

There isn’t much you can do about your grades—you have the grades you have. However, we do not use any grade cutoffs or thresholds in admissions. We want to see that you did well and excelled in whatever program you were in. Did you push yourself to take upper-level classes? Did you do well in the classes most directly related to your research area? If you have special circumstances that explain some of your grades, please include a description of them in your statement.

The Whiting School of Engineering does not require GRE General Test scores for applications to our PhD programs.

TOEFL or IELTS

The application will be available for submission on or around August 15.

Vivien Thomas Scholars

The Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative (VTSI) is an endowed fellowship program at Johns Hopkins for PhD students in STEM fields. It provides full tuition, stipend, and benefits while also providing targeted mentoring, networking, community, and professional development opportunities. Students who have attended a historically black college and university or other minority serving institution for undergraduate study are eligible to apply. To be considered for the VTSI, all application and supplementary materials must be received by December 1, 2021.

Use your legal name as it appears on your passport when registering for any standardized test (and also on your application for admission).

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) 

The GRE is required for some degree programs at the Graduate School. Please check the table below to see if your program requires it.  

• Required = You must submit GRE General Test results. 
• Optional = You may submit GRE General Test results if you wish. If you choose to submit scores, you must follow any self-reported scores with official test results. 
• Not Accepted = Do not submit GRE General Test results. GRE General Test scores will not be considered when applications are reviewed. If you submit scores, they will not be reviewed.

Test requirements below are for the 2024-2025 application cycle.

*Applicants to a combined degree program should consult both programs' admissions requirements and submit scores if either of the two programs require the GRE General Test and/or Subject Tests.

Submitting Official GRE Scores  

Official GRE scores must be sent to Yale University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, directly from ETS.

• Use Institution Code 3987.  
• You do not need to enter an individual department code when sending your official scores. Institution Code 3987 is sufficient.  
• Paper score reports are not accepted.  
• Scores released to other schools at Yale University cannot be transferred to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  
• If you are applying to a PhD program associated with one of the professional schools at Yale, send your official scores directly to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Institution Code 3987) and not to the professional schools, which may have a separate code for applicants applying to other degree programs.  
• You should also self-report scores and any future test dates in your application.

English Language Tests - TOEFL iBT / IELTS Academic

TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic is required of most applicants whose native language is not English.

You may be exempt from this requirement if you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years. See "Exemptions" for more information. 

Official TOEFL iBT scores may be used to fulfill the English Language Test requirement.

• Scores must be sent to Yale University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, directly from ETS.
• Use Institution Code 3987.

Official IELTS Academic scores may be used to fulfill the English Language Test requirement.

• We will only accept official scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center via the E-Delivery service.
• When you take this test, please specify Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (also known as the Office of Graduate Admissions) as a score recipient. To identify us in the IELTS system, our address is Warner House, 1 Hillhouse Avenue, room 302, New Haven, CT 06511. Please do not send paper score reports to this address.
• We do not accept paper Test Report Forms, nor do we verify Test Report Forms (TRFs).
• We accept only IELTS Academic test scores. The IELTS General Training module is not accepted.

If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS.

No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g., MA/MS or PhD) from any institution.

When you complete your application, you will answer questions about your native language and the primary language of instruction at your baccalaureate institution. If either was English, you will not be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when you submit your application. No separate documentation is necessary. 

Note: If you are not required to report TOEFL or IELTS scores (i.e. you are exempt because English is your native language or was the language of instruction at your undergraduate institution and you were in residence three years or more), but you choose to self-report your TOEFL or IELTS scores in the application anyways, you will be required to also submit official test results for verification purposes.

General Management Admission Test (GMAT) - For Applicants to Management (PhD)

The General Management Admission Test (GMAT) is acceptable in lieu of the GRE for applicants to the PhD program in Management.

• To send official GMAT results, select Code 3TJ-30-78 for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
• Paper score reports are not accepted and scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred or used.

How to apply

All prospective graduate students to our Ph.D., M.E., S.M., and A.B./S.M. programs apply to the School of Engineering through the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin  Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) .

Students interested in the Master in Design Engineering with the Harvard Graduate School of Design will find information about applying to that program  here .

Students interested in the MS/MBA: Engineering Sciences program offered jointly with Harvard Business School will find information about applying to that program  here. Students with bachelor's degrees in the natural or quantitative sciences, mathematics, computer science, or engineering are invited to apply.

All students begin graduate study in the fall term only. 

What does the application require?

• Completed  application form  submitted by the appropriate application deadline (Dec.1st for masters applicants;  December 15th for Ph.D. applicants)
• Statement of Purpose: describe your future research interests, how they relate to your classroom and/or research experience, and which labs at SEAS you're most excited about.  Your statement should be no longer than 1,000 words.
• Personal Statement:Please share how your experiences or activities will advance our mission and commitment to sustain a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment  (full text of prompt can be found in the application).  No longer than 500 words.
• Three letters of recommendation submitted electronically
• Transcripts; please upload copies of all transcripts to the Academic Background section of the online application; unofficial copies are acceptable. 
• C.V. or Resume
• SEAS does not accept General GRE scores nor Subject Test GRE scores for applicants to our Ph.D. programs.  Applicants to these programs should not submit official or unofficial GRE scores to us nor mention them anywhere in their application materials.  
• SEAS does not accept General GRE scores nor Subject Test GRE scores for applicants to our masters degree programs in Computational Science & Engineering and Data Science.   Applicants to these programs should not submit official or unofficial GRE scores to us nor mention them anywhere in their application materials.  
• Either the GRE or GMAT is required for applicants applying to the Master of Design Engineering or the MS/MBA: Engineering Sciences programs.   The applications for these programs are available via the Graduate School of Design or Harvard Business School, respectively. 
• If required, an official  TOEFL  or  IELTS  score report. The school code to use to submit your TOEFL score is 3451.  *TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for applicants whose native language is other than English and who do not hold a Bachelor degree or its equivalent from an institution at which English is the language of instruction.  The score must be valid at the time of entry into the program.   Note that a masters degree from an English-speaking institution does not meet this requirement.   
• The application fee of $105.00. Should you want to request a fee waiver from Harvard Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, you may do so in the fee section of the application.

Please list only SEAS ladder faculty on the application.  "Affiliate faculty" cannot admit PhD students.  There are many SEAS ladder faculty with formal joint appointments in other Harvard Griffin GSAS departments, like Physics and Earth and Planetary Sciences.  These faculty can serve as primary research advisors to SEAS students.   A complete list of the SEAS ladder faculty can be found  here - filter for "primary graduate advisors" once you're on this page. 

We do not require an interview as part of the application process and we cannot offer applicants the opportunity for an in-person interview with the admissions staff.  Attending a Ph.D. or Masters Programs admissions information session is the best way to have your questions answered.   More information about our information sessions that will be held in the Fall can be found  here.

We require electronic submission of the entire application, including letters of recommendation and transcripts.  Please do not send us any hard copy materials.

Admissions Timeline for Ph.D., M.E., S.M., and A.B./S.M. Programs  (Note: The  Master in Design Engineering  and the  MS/MBA: Engineering Sciences  have different deadlines and timetables.) University Catalog 2024-25

Computer Science

**Spring admissions are given only occasionally, depending on funding and faculty research needs. If there are no spring openings, spring applicants are automatically considered for the subsequent fall semester. There are no summer admissions for any Computer Science program.

Program Description

The Department of Computer Science and Operations Research offers the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Computer Science. Graduate course work in Operations Research is offered and may be used to provide an operations research concentration to either program. In addition to the minimum Graduate School requirements, the following items are required for all Computer Science applicants seeking an advanced degree:

Master of Science

• The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree from an educational institution of recognized standing. Admission to the program is competitive; the following minimum requirements are necessary but are not sufficient for automatic admission.
• The applicant must show, by a combination of educational background, academic performance, and work experience, the potential to succeed in advanced study and research in computer science. Minimum preparation usually includes the ability to program in one or more modern, commonly used high-level languages (such as Java or C++); and experience in using data structures such as linked lists and binary trees. Minimum preparation for unconditional admission to the master's program would normally include courses in computer science principles and theory equivalent to the NDSU courses.

• The applicant for the Computer Science M.S. degree program must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) in all previous courses of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0) or equivalent to attain full standing.
• The applicant for the Computer Science M.S. degree program must have a score above the median (50 th  percentile) for the quantitative reasoning portion of the GRE exam.
• International students are welcome to apply. They must submit TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic score. Minimum requirements are: TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper based) or 79 (internet based); IELTS score of at least 6.5; or PTE Academic score of at least 53.
• Eligibility for a teaching assistantship requires the following additional requirements:  minimum TOEFL ibT score of 81 (IELTS of 7), a TOEFL ibT Speaking subscale score of 23 or above and a TOEFL ibT Writing subscale score of 21 or above. The IELTS equivalent scores are 6.0 and 6.0 respectively.
• These individuals must have a minimum TOEFL ibT score of 79 (IELTS of 6.5) and must score at or above the 40th percentile on the TOEFL ibT Speaking and Writing subscales (currently 19 and 21 respectively). The IELTS equivalent scores are 5.5 and 6.0 respectively.

Doctor of Philosophy

The applicant must have at least a four-year bachelor's degree, or a master's degree in computer science. In some cases, students with a degree in a closely related area may be considered, provided the course work includes exposure to the skills listed under M.S. above. Students with only a bachelor's degree should have substantial computer science experience, whether acquired through course work or professional experience.

Admission to the program is competitive, and requirements for admission to this program are more rigorous than for admission to the M.S. program. Students applying with a bachelor's degree only should meet a minimum GPA of 3.25 in previous coursework. The applicant for Computer Science Ph.D. degree program must have a GRE score above the median (50th percentile) for the quantitative reasoning portion. The admissions committee will evaluate the applicant's overall academic record, as well as any relevant employment and professional experience. Of particular importance is evidence of the applicant's potential for scholarship and independent research at the Ph.D. level. International students are welcome. English Language requirements are the same as for the Computer Science M.S. program.

The graduate admissions committee reviews all applications during the month following the application deadline and considers accepted students for any available assistantship positions within the department. If an assistantship is not offered at time of admission, accepted students can then fill out an application on the Computer Science website for later consideration.

Financial Assistance

Assistantships are available to selected graduate students. Teaching one section of a lower division service course requires 10 hours of work per week and qualifies the student for a waiver of graduate tuition and a monthly stipend. Other assistantships that provide a stipend and tuition waiver include research assistantships, which involve assisting faculty with their research, and graduate service assistantships, which involve tutoring, grading or computer-related work with faculty members or organizations on campus. Related prior experience increases the likelihood of a teaching or tutoring assistantship being awarded. For all assistantships, a student's chances are greater after they have been at NDSU one or two semesters.

• Research adviser should be selected by the end of the second semester at NDSU.
• A Plan of Study listing coursework and examination committee members should be completed by the end of the second semester at NDSU.
• All course work must be approved by the student's adviser, Supervisory Committee, department chair, and graduate dean through the plan of study.
• A maximum of 9 semester credits may be transferred into the program. There may be a maximum of 6 credits of independent study.
• Comprehensive Examination (on the core courses) should be completed by the end of the fourth semester.
• Final Oral Examination on the student's research.

• Research adviser should be selected by the second semester at NDSU.
• A minimum of 15 didactic credits numbered 700 -789 or 800-898, of which at least 9 are not included in the Computer Science Core Courses listed above.
• 30-45 semester credit hours of research – The Ph.D. requires a research contribution to be made under the supervision of one of the Computer Science Department’s graduate faculty members.
• Research proposal presentation and preliminary oral examination (qualifying exam) should be completed by the fourth semester at NDSU
• Satisfactory completion of the Comprehensive Exam at the PhD Level. (written based on the core courses)
• Dissertation
• Final oral examination on the dissertation

Some additional information regarding the course work:

• 30 credits previously completed toward the 90 total credits required for the doctoral degree  OR
• Up to 9 credits previously earned graduate level courses with a grade of B or better may be used toward the 90 total credits for the doctoral degree.
• The 90 credits (including any credits transferred) must be computing-related with at least 45 credits involving significant graduate level computer science material. Generally, these credits would be offered by a computer science department.
• The 90 credits may include a maximum of 15 credits of non-didactic courses (independent studies or seminars). Seminars are limited to 4 of those credits.
• The student's advisory committee, the department chair, the college dean, and the graduate dean all must approve the course work on the plan of study.
