The capstone project has become an integral part of the university degree curriculum. It can take many various forms, but its purpose remains the same. The capstone project is a unique opportunity to carry out independent group research in order to devise an innovative solution for a real-world problem. The capstone project is usually the final assignment and plays a vital role in preparing students for the world of work thanks to its practical applications and ability to help hone students’ professional knowledge and skills.
At York University in Toronto, Canada, things are a little different. In 2019, the university revised the traditional capstone project and created C4: Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom . While it still possesses the fundamentals of the traditional capstone project, C4 is a new, year-long initiative that brings students together from various degree programmes to work in interdisciplinary teams with faculty and project partners on real-world challenges pitched by non-profit organisations, start-ups and businesses to create social impact.
TopUniversities spoke to Megan Tran and Javeria Mirza, two students at York University, to find out about their capstone project and why they feel it has played an important role in not just their academic development, but their professional development as well.
The capstone project is designed to consolidate final-year students’ learning with valuable hands-on experience to help develop them into well-prepared and well-rounded graduates.
Students work together in small groups to come up with innovative solutions for real-life problems, all while gaining valuable insights into the demands and responsibilities of the working world. This gives students a chance to bring their leadership and management skills alive and understand the consequences of their decisions in a ‘safe space’.
C4 gives students an insight into global affairs, international relations as well as social corporate responsibility and sustainability.
Final-year bachelor’s in international studies student Megan and master’s in political science student Javeria were two of the eight interdisciplinary students, from the Faculty of Environmental Studies, the Lassonde School of Engineering, Glendon College, and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University who worked together on the ‘Solar Floatie’ project.
“As a group, we were all interested in using technology and design-thinking for good. Our collective passion for social impact brought us together as a team. CooperLab at York University led by Professor Thomas Cooper was already spearheading the idea of an inflatable solar collector,” said Javeria.
“But how we went about developing the technology and what we wanted to use it for was up to us,” added Megan.
“ The Solar Floatie was born when the engineering side of the solar collector project was merged with the anthropology side and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework to propose a sustainable implementation model,” explained Javeria.

“It gave me an opportunity to learn outside a traditional academic setting and allowed me to explore my interest in sustainability and passion for social impact,” said Megan. “Since being a part of this project, I’ve been involved with a variety of organisations carrying out work that align with these passions.”
Javeria echoes Megan’s sentiments.
She said: “Bridging the lessons learnt during the capstone project such as the value of continuously learning, taking initiative, and working effectively with people from diverse disciplinary backgrounds has been invaluable in both my UN work and my graduate studies.”

The capstone project in college is the apogee, or completion marker, of a student's coursework leading to the culmination of their program with a degree in their chosen field of study. The original definition of a capstone focuses on the actual stone placed at the top of a wall or building, marking the successful completion of the structure. It's a significant and celebrated piece of architecture, considered to be the most important of an entire construction project.
"(Capstone projects are) the apex of all a student's work done throughout their college career," said Dr. Jeff Czarnec , a social sciences adjunct online and on-campus at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). Retired after 23 years in law enforcement, Czarnec served as an associate dean of criminal justice and social sciences at SNHU for nearly a decade. He now leverages his extensive background to teach social sciences, enriching the academic experience with his practical insights.
When entering a capstone course, there's an expectation that you have all the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful.
You have the opportunity to pick a research topic that is of interest to you and run with it. "After having to write research papers in all of their courses prior to (the capstone), the task is not one to dread, but to enjoy. It is their time to shine as students and to enjoy the journey," MacCarty said.
A capstone course is more than a potential degree requirement. It can serve as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge mastery and creative thinking, which may help you stand out to potential employers.
Each university, program and instructor may have different requirements — or models — for a capstone project. According to Czarnec, a general design might first include selecting a topic of interest that the instructor will approve.
Czarnec said that, depending on the program, a capstone may include anything from a video presentation or an architectural model to an art exhibit or short film; however, it almost always includes a paper demonstrating an introduction, theory, evaluation, research and individual issues relevant to the proposal.
"Students are expected to be ready to enter the world as professionals in their field upon completion of the capstone course," said MacCarty.
The time it takes to complete a capstone project usually depends on the course's length. If you're in an undergraduate online program at SNHU, for instance, your capstone course would take eight weeks to complete, Czarnec said.
Capstone courses are research-based, and you can choose your topic early on, allowing you more freedom to conduct research independently. Capstone topics usually align with a program's specific disciplines, too.
For example, in the social sciences realm, "our focus is on human behavior and cognition, which may be different from a capstone course in business or STEM," MacCarty said.
Types of capstones.
There are many types of capstone projects that you could consider, and they vary from learner to learner, Czarnec said. "Some will investigate issues or phenomenon that they are familiar with either professionally, personally or courtesy of a discipline-related source, such (as) a police or human services agency," he said.
In a nutshell, a rough outline of a capstone, according to Czarnec, may look something like this:
Czarnec said that if you're looking for a capstone topic, you may consider focusing on an area you're passionate about or you could also try to ask you instructor for some assistance. For example, Czarnec said that he can act as a guide, mentor, editor and research resource for his students to help them focus and narrow their search for a capstone topic.
"Not necessarily," said Czarnec. "It does force you to be efficient and very specific to topic. No fluff. Straight forward. Razor sharp."
The capstone is more of an opportunity to catch your breath, he said, and to retrace and pull up what you have learned in a more stress-free environment .
"It helps validate students as learners," Czarnec said.
Depending on the major and course requirements, there may be opportunities to connect with outside contacts, not only to assist with the capstone project research and problem statement but also to provide a networking community .
"Not every research project is, nor should they be, the same," Czarnec said. "Everyone has a different approach."
A capstone is similar to a thesis in that the starting point involves the strengths needed for a thesis or dissertation work. For example, you may need to consider the skeletal structure of research and form your theory, hypothesis and problem statement.
"While a capstone is certainly a scholarly piece of work and does share some aspects of a thesis, the time and detail that is required of a master's thesis is greater," MacCarty said.
A capstone paper may be 25 pages, whereas a thesis could be 100 or more. If you choose to further your education beyond a bachelor's degree, the capstone project could be an invaluable tool in preparing for a graduate thesis.
Capstones of all programs are leading you to the end game, Czarnec said. The goal is to develop you into a well-rounded thinker who can pull their work together in a coherent, articulate, well-organized fashion while considering the demands of the profession or vocation you're interested in.
The focus and intent of a capstone should be to create an effective device to assess and measure all that you've learned throughout your program in an aggregate fashion so you can demonstrate your life-long vocational skills in a nice, neat package.
"My goal is for students to leave the program confident about their skills and abilities," said Czarnec.
MacCarty said that capstone courses should be structured to support your success in fulfilling program requirements and allow you the opportunity to showcase your academic abilities and skills gained throughout your degree program.

The Psychology Capstone Experience is intended to provide the psychology student with an intensive exploration into an aspect (e.g., teaching, service, research) and area (e.g., clinical, developmental, behavior analysis, behavioral neuroscience) of psychology as a means for enhancing learning and integrating the knowledge and experiences acquired as a psychology major.
Experiential learning experiences are critically important for baccalaureate graduates of Psychology to be competitive for graduate or professional programs or to seek employment. One goal of the Capstone requirement is that the student will become well-rounded professionally.
The capstone must be completed within the 12 months prior to graduation.
There are 5 types of Psychology Capstone courses.
Start with what you want to do after you graduate. Your capstone can be used to help you develop the valued skills necessary for that next step related to your career path.
Students interested in an applied area of mental health, like Counseling or Social Work, should prioritize a PSYC 491A capstone.
Students interested in careers involving research or medicine should plan on completing several semesters of research with a faculty member, culminating in a PSYC 495A, PSYC 498A, or PSYC 487 capstone.
Students interested in careers in Behavior Analysis, and all those pursuing the undergraduate Certificate in Behavior Analysis should complete a PSYC 486 or PSYC 487 capstone.
Students interested in careers in Human Resources or Business should consider a PSYC 491A capstone.
Students planning to pursue a career in education should complete with a PSYC 490A or PSYC 491A capstone.
Students must have completed PSYC 204 – Research Methods and Analysis II and be in their last year of study before they will be allowed to register for a capstone experience.
Credits: Capstone courses are necessarily 3 credits. Each credit will equate to 3 hours a week of activity in Fall or Spring semesters. Therefore, students should expect to complete 9 hours of activity a week during their capstone semester. If a student is completing a capstone over the 12-week summer session, they should expect to spend at least 12 hours a week engaged in their capstone work.
Project: As a requirement of their Capstone Experience, students complete a capstone project. The nature of the project will vary based on the type of capstone. For example, a PSYC 491A capstone project might be a case study of a particular child or adult at your site. A PSYC 495A capstone project would be completing a research study under the supervision of their faculty supervisor. The project will culminate in a 10-page paper and presentation of a professional paper at the department Capstone Poster Session.
Poster: At the end of the fall and spring semesters, the Department of Psychology hosts a Capstone Poster Session. At this event, all students completing their capstone requirements will produce a professional poster, with the supervision of their supervising faculty, and have their poster evaluated by members of the Department of Psychology. This is one of the most exciting and fun events of the semester. Students in their earlier years are encouraged to attend this poster session. Some PSYC courses may offer extra credit for attending this event.
ACAT: Around mid-semester, all Capstone students must complete the ACAT, a standardized assessment of psychology content.
Students completing the PSYC 490A capstone will be involved in proctoring, tutoring, and depending on the course, lecturing or leading in-class activities and discussions. Students will complete a research or equivalent study on issues related to teaching/pedagogy.
This capstone can benefit those students who want to develop their presentational skills, tutoring skills, and are interested in examining topics related to pedagogy, student success, or other topics.
To arrange a PSYC 490A experience, email course supervisors for PSYC 101, PSYC 241, PSYC 251, or another course 1) that you find interesting and 2) in which you earned an A. Find out if that faculty has GPA requirements for their Teaching Practicum students. Some students will reach out a year in advance to secure their spot as a Teaching Practicum student with a faculty. These opportunities can be limited. Once approved to set up a PSYC 490A, you and the faculty member fill out a contract and once this is done, you will send this contract to our Undergraduate Records Assistant. After that, you will be allowed to register for the course.

Student completing the PSYC 491A capstone option will be expected to work at a site for 9 hours a week in Fall or Spring semesters or 12 hours a week if completed over the summer session. Sites can be related to treatment of addictions, persons with autism spectrum disorders or neurodivergence, human resources, psychological testing, and many other areas of interest to students. Students will also meet weekly with their PSYC 491A faculty and GTA to complete work on eCampus.
Most Psychology majors complete this capstone option. It is beneficial for allowing students to gain practical experiences and develop skills valued by employers and many graduate programs. This is a popular capstone choice for students considering careers in Counseling or Clinical Mental Health.
Plan this at least year in advance . Check the due dates for the application and related forms. The application is usually due by the 4 th week of the previous semester. The steps setting up a Professional Field Experience will also include having a background check completed before a student can register for credits.
Like PSYC 491A, student completing the PSYC 486 capstone option will be expected to work at a site for 9 hours a week in Fall or Spring semesters or 12 hours a week if completed over the summer session. The difference is that the site will be specifically focus on applications of behavior analysis, allowing students to use the PSYC 486 course to meet the experiential requirements for the undergraduate Certificate in Behavior Analysis as well as the Psychology major capstone.

Students completing a research capstone are typically completing advanced research training in a faculty research lab within the Department of Psychology. Students may have already developed foundational skills in that faculty research lab from previously completing PSYC 497 or PSYC 487 credits. Students may be involved in recruiting, collecting data or coding data, running additional analyses, and assisting in manuscript writing.
PSYC 495A is a research capstone. PSYC 498A is an Honor’s thesis. PSYC 487 involves research in behavior analysis.
Students will develop important research skills and may engage in professional experiences, such as presenting research at colloquia and professional meetings. Students will be working with graduate students and often enjoy important mentoring as they prepare for jobs or graduate programs after they graduate.

This program is distinct from the Honors College. Students do not need to be members of the Honors College to engage in this capstone option.
Completing a PSYC 498A Honors Thesis generally requires 2 semesters. During the first semester, students typically register for the non-capstone section of PSYC 498. Then during the second semester, students will register for the Capstone section of PSYC 498A. Faculty often require that the student work in their lab for PSYC 497 credit previously. PSYC 498 positions are primarily available in the fall and spring semesters. However, some faculty members will work with students completing a PSYC 498A Capstone Experience during the summer.
In this option, students create a 3-person Honors Thesis committee, usually made up of their supervising faculty member, a second faculty member from outside the lab, and a graduate student. Honors Thesis students develop their own study, propose the study to their Honors Thesis committee, carry out the study, write up their findings, and then defend their study to their committee at the conclusion. As with other capstone students, Honors Thesis students will write a research paper and present their poster at the Department of Psychology Senior Poster Session. Most Honors Thesis papers are “manuscript quality,” that is, the student and the faculty may plan to submit the paper to a professional journal.
With the experience of forming a committee, proposing and defending the research, presenting the research and perhaps seeking a publication, students completing this capstone option are developing skills and experiences that will allow them to be competitive at the highest levels.
Students interested in the PSYC 498A Honors Capstone Experience should discuss this with their research faculty supervisor and their major advisor. A completed and approved PSYC 498 Application, an overall GPA of 3.4 and a Psychology GPA of at least 3.5 are required to apply for the Honors Capstone. Related application and contract forms are provided by the student’s major advisor.
Setting up a Capstone course will require the approval of the application, completion of a contract (and any other related materials) and submitting form(s) to the Undergraduate Student Records Administrator, Vee Lewis ( [email protected] ). Vee Lewis will lift the departmental approval restriction to allow students to enroll in their experiential course.

The visual presentation must include recorded presentation and will have a maximum time limit of 5 minutes. The student will be creative with the presentations. The student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words.
The purpose of the Proposal Paper Assignment is for the student to select an area of focus, service, or argument. The student must choose one option to focus on. Once the student has chosen his/her focus, he/she may select a topic within that focus. The student may not switch focus nor topic after the assigned Module: Week. The student should select the focus and topic he/she is most interested in so that he/she can be fully engaged with the topic. The student will use the template provided to complete the Proposal Assignment. Then, the student will receive peer feedback. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Once the student has chosen a topic and a focus, he/she will begin researching that topic more thoroughly. All research must be from primary sources that are scholarly and peer-reviewed. The student is to find a minimum of 10 scholarly sources and 2 scholarly biblical sources (not including the Bible) about the chosen topic. Sources must prompt or align (support) with the student’s opinion as well as oppose the opinion. The sources the student chooses must broaden the depth of knowledge and challenge personal opinion or stance on the need or the argument. The student will use the template provided in Canvas to complete the Annotated Bibliography Assignment. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
By this point, the student should have completed an in-depth reading of his/her sources and extracted data, quotes, and paraphrases that will be used in the outline. The 3-tier outline provides an organized method for keeping track of the source information that matches the details/notes being collected. The purpose of this 3-tier outline is for the student to plan out the Aviation Capstone Paper, think through the layout, and formulate the thesis statement incorporating a minimum of 2 lenses with two subheadings of support and oppose the need or the issue. Finally, the student will begin to weave a Biblical worldview into the topic of the paper. A 3-tier outline has 3 levels of information. The student must utilize the 3-Tier Outline Template provided in Canvas. Then, the student will receive peer feedback. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
The purpose of the Implementation Site Information Assignment is for the student to identify a final implementation site and to confirm a mentor. Utilizing the Implementation Site Information Template , the student will select an implementation site and mentor. The student must be sure to review the implementation information on the template to ensure he/she can fulfill the required expectations at the implementation site. The questions within the Implementation Site Information Template are designed to help the student think through the implementation in terms of integrating the thesis. The questions are also designed to help the student think through the specific details of the implementation itself. Signatures are acknowledging the validity of the substance of the student’s answers to questions. This means that all persons signing the document need to be able to read the questions and answers before signing. (CLO: G)

The purpose of this assignment is for the student to document the 24-hour implementation experience. The student must use the Implementation Site Daily Log Form provided in Canvas. It will be important for the student’s presentation that he/she records these events daily. This way the student will obtain the most accurate record of his/her tasks and reflections. The student may use one log sheet each day while at the implementation site or the student may combine the entire experience into one log. Log sheet(s) must be filled out completely and thoroughly. They must demonstrate thoughtfulness and reflection in content. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
The mentor interview is an important component of the student’s implementation. This is an opportunity for the student to talk about his/her thesis topic and conclusions with an expert in the aviation field. The goal of this interview should be for the student to use his/her mentor’s expertise to speak to the conclusions of his/her thesis and to integrate the conclusion with the implementation itself. The student should utilize the Mentor Interview and Reflection Paper Template in Canvas. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Utilizing the peer-review feedback from the Proposal Paper, 3-Tier Outline, Initial Draft of Aviation Capstone Paper, and the many other elements of the Aviation Capstone Project, the student will complete the final draft of the Aviation Capstone Paper. The student must utilize the Aviation Capstone Template in Canvas to ensure proper APA formatting.
The Aviation Capstone involves researching and writing a 10–12-page paper about the topic chosen: developing a service that addresses a need or developing an argument that addresses an issue. Once a topic has been established, it will take research to establish the service or position being addressed.
An Aviation Capstone Paper, also known as a thesis paper, starts with a question addressing a topic, gives informative details regarding that topic, integrates a biblical worldview into the topic, weaves an implementation correlating to the thesis, and draws a conclusion summarizing a solution or stance. Throughout the research, the student will clearly identify, understand, evaluate, and construct a conclusion either addressing a need or formulating a stance (argument) on an issue. The student is required to look through a minimum of 2 different lenses that address the topic of study. These lenses can be from an array of viewpoints; moral, ethical, economical, scientific, historical, etc., but the final lens must be from the biblical perspective, integrating biblical worldviews into the capstone. A template is provided in Canvas called Aviation Capstone Template and should be used to ensure proper APA formatting. References quoted in the body of the paper should be listed on a Reference page.
A minimum of 24 in-text citations must be used to support the contents of your paper. Cite works according to the APA format. The student must have at minimum 10 scholarly sources and 2 scholarly Biblical sources. The student may not include the Bible as part of the 12 minimum sources. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H)
While at the Implementation Site, the student must have a mentor who is supervising and guiding the experience. To gain insight into how the implementation is progressing, the student must be sure to provide the Mentor Evaluation Form to his/her mentor at the end of the implementation period. The purpose of this form is to provide the student and the professor feedback regarding student performance during the implementation week. Once the form is complete, including signatures, the student must to upload the completed Mentor Evaluation Form to the assignment page. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H)
The student presentation should incorporate all aspects of thinking on the topic chosen: an examination of Scripture, research, discussions, and conclusions based on knowledge, experience, and reflection of efforts. A Biblical worldview should be intrinsically and purposefully woven throughout the entire presentation. The presentation should demonstrate mastery of thesis, content, implementation, and reflection of the Aviation Capstone Project. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H)
Using the many course outcomes discussed within each Module: Week, as well as the required reading How to Win Friends and Influence People , in 500–750 words (excluding Title and Reference pages), the student will reflect on what he/she has learned in this course and how this course has fostered his/her academic, professional, and personal growth. The Reflective Essay Assignment must include at least 3 citations of the Bible and at least 3 citations of How to Win Friends and Influence People , for a total of at least 6 in-text citations in current APA format.
