“This is some crazy s--- overall and also on a technical level,” said a Skiatook High School student’s mother
A homework assignment ignited uproar online after a concerned parent shared a photo of the questions a teacher wanted her child to answer, including "Is God real?"
Oklahoma mother Olivia Gray posted her sophomore daughter Nettie Gray’s world history assignment from a Skiatook High School teacher on Facebook on Aug. 15, describing it as “some crazy s---.”
The assignment — titled “How did the world start?” — ended with two questions that raised concerns: “Is God real?” and “Is Satan real?”
“It’s being called a research paper,” Olivia wrote of the assignment, which asked students to provide sources using APA Style to support their answers.
“This is some crazy s--- overall and also on a technical level. Literally the kid had been in school ONE WEEK,” she concluded.
Many reacted to the assignment in the comments section of Olivia's Facebook post.
“This assignment is wrong on more than ten levels,” one person commented, while another wrote, “I’m stunned and horrified they are even being allowed to push or preach their own personal religion/religious bias like that onto students in a public school in the United States.”
Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. In a statement to area news outlet 2 News Oklahoma on Aug. 19, the school district addressed the situation.
“Skiatook Public Schools became aware of the World History assignment in question through a social media post,” the statement read. “Once administration reviewed the assignment, it was determined that the presentation of the material was not conducive to our instructional plan.”
“Administration and staff will continue to collaborate on best practices to meet the Oklahoma Academic Standards,” the statement added.
PEOPLE reached out to Skiatook Public Schools’ Superintendent Rick Loggins and Director of Curriculum Tim Buck for comment about the controversial assignment, but did not immediately hear back.
The Yankees , before Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies , designated right-hander Michael Tonkin for assignment and signed right-hander Phil Bickford to the active roster -- a move that manager Aaron Boone described as "tough."
"Yeah, tough one today," Boone said. "I mean, Tonk's been great. He pitched well for us. He's been a great teammate, so, difficult decision there.
"Just felt like we're probably in a little bit, potentially, leaving ourselves short -- not necessarily today, but in any kind of scenario, today, probably having a few guys down, including what would've been Tonk, where we would've have to use a lot of different guys that probably puts us in a bad spot tomorrow.
"So just felt like we needed a little more coverage today is really what it comes down to."
Tonkin, 34, allowed 26 runs (21 earned) on 44 hits (five homers) while striking out 57 and walking 21 in 56 innings over 39 games this season.
"Yeah, today was a tough one," Boone said of Tonkin, who added one hold and two saves in four opportunities since joining the Yankees as a late-April claim off waivers from the Mets . "Look, I don't want to get this about me -- this is about a guy and his career and a guy that's pitched well and a really nice job and has been a really good teammate in there, too. So, yeah, that's a rough one."
Bickford, 29, rejoins the Yankees after being down with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since July 5. In five games with the Yankees this season, Bickford has allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits (one homer) while striking out four and walking one over five innings.
"He's been doing a nice job and he's got some length to him, probably give us a couple innings if we needed it," Boone said of Bickford, who has a 3.00 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 45 innings over 34 games (one start) at Triple-A this season. "Obviously, there's a number of people in the conversation to that. But he's right now, it seemed like the right guy to take."

Yankees dfa michael tonkin in ‘tough’ move as they call up phil bickford.
For the fourth time this season, Michael Tonkin has been designated for assignment, but this one followed a stretch of consistency. Behind 45 appearances with the Braves last year and the 65 with the Twins in 2016, this was Tonkin’s third-longest stretch of time in the majors across his career.
So it was a “tough one,” manager Aaron Boone said, but with Boone feeling as if the Yankees could be short on relievers in the present, they opted to DFA the 34-year-old reliever — who’d collected a 3.38 ERA across 39 appearances since signing in April — and brought up right-handed reliever Phil Bickford from Triple-A, signing him to a major league contract and selecting him to the active roster.
It marked the second time this season that Bickford, an ex-Met, has been with the Yankees. He threw in five games at the end of June and his ERA ballooned to 14.40, but in 34 appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he has pitched to a 3.00 ERA and picked up five saves.
Bickford was with Scranton for their road series against St. Paul, last pitching in a game Aug. 21, and he flew to join the Yankees on Sunday before they closed a three-game set against the Rockies at Yankee Stadium and traveled for a series against the Nationals.
“He’s been doing a nice job,” Boone said of Bickford, “and he’s got some length to him. Probably can give us a couple innings if we needed it. … There was a number of people in the conversation for that but right now, seemed like the right guy to take.”
That didn’t make the decision with Tonkin any easier for Boone. Tonkin’s career has been filled with different stops — from four different MLB teams to stints in Japan, the Dominican Republic and the Independent League — but after bouncing around between the Mets and Twins to start 2024, he found a consistent role in the Yankees’ bullpen.
Since the All-Star break, though, Tonkin’s ERA has spiked to 6.98 across 19 ⅓ innings. Only three of his last 12 outings ended without a run crossing the plate.
Boone will likely have to make additional bullpen decisions across the next few weeks, too, as the Yankees’ collection of relievers for October starts to take shape. Ian Hamilton (right lat strain) stuck out all three batters Saturday in his first rehab appearance with Double-A Somerset. Boone said reports on Lou Trivino (right elbow surgery recovery) and Scott Effross in the minors have been good — and that both relievers are options for the Yankees in the future, too
But the first domino has fallen in the present.
