Ramayana deals with the story of ancient times. The story is about the life and ruler of the honest King Rama or Ramachandra of Ayodhya. At some point in time, the royal dynasty of Ayodhya suffered from a crisis. King Dasharatha, the father of Lord Rama, wanted to offer the crown to his son, Rama before going to the forest.

King Dasharatha had 3 queens named Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra. The name of the mother of Lord Rama was Kaushalya. Lord Rama had to struggle with Ravana to save his wife from the clutches of Ravana. He became friends with the monkey tribes of Kishkin and they offered help to him in the war against Ravana.

With their help and support, Lord Rama succeeded in building a dam across the ocean and led his army to Lanka. In the end, Mata Sita was rescued from Lanka. The king demon Ravana was killed. In this struggle, Lord Hanuman had supported Lord Rama.

Lord Hanuman was the compatriot of Lord Rama. Lord Hanuman loved both the Mata Sita and Lord Rama from the core of his heart. At the same time, the brother of Ravana, Bibhishana was a dedicated friend of Rama.

The Ramayana is an epic Indian tale about the Indian life. It offers an example of dharma. The protagonists Rama and his wife Sita are an ideal couple who lived their lives according to dharma. They are an example of how married couples should be as Rama was an ideal husband to his wife and she was a faithful wife to him. For many years, the epic has been passed down from one generation to another and young Indians told to emulate Rama and Sita.

After marrying Rama, he was banished to live in the forest for fourteen years by his father at his stepmother’s word who wanted her real son to inherit the throne. Sita refused to remain behind in the palace and became adamant about following her husband to the forest as she said that a wife’s place is by husband’s side. Unfortunately, she was captured by the demon king Ravana. Later, Rama and Lakshmana rescued her.

However, Rama was in doubt of his wife’s faithfulness and purity because she had lived under King Ravana for a year. She had to go through fire to proof her purity and she was found to be innocent. The treatment that Rama gave his wife after her rescue is questionable because he is supposed to be a man of dharma hence of good thought. However, he doubts his wife and makes her go through fire, which she accepts (Hess 2).

Rama knew his wife was innocent but demanded for a proof for the sake of his subjects. In the second instance, he knew she was innocent because she had already passed the first purity test. However, he gave in to rumours about his wife’s impurity after hearing people question his taking back of Sita after she had been with King Ravana.

The culture of the Rhaghu Dynasty did not allow a man to live with an infidel wife and many people in the kingdom were wondering if Sita was faithful after living with King Ravana. Tradition demanded banishment of such a woman. He banished his wife because he felt he had a bigger duty towards his subjects than his personal life (Duiker and Spielvogel 62).

Sita was angry at her husband’s treatment concerning her purity. She wept and rebuked him for behaving like an ordinary man and treating her as an ordinary women yet she had already proved her purity (Hess 6). She felt betrayed because during all the time she was in captivity her mind was with her husband constantly. Her anger and humiliation made her request mother Earth to swallow her to find some peace.

The two sons of Rama Lava and Kush injured their uncle Lakshmana in battle of the horse not knowing they were related. Fortunately, he did not succumb to the injuries as he was revived using a certain herb. He died later after being expelled by his brother Rama and God Indra took him to heaven.

Dasaratha , king of Kosala, is childless and desperately wants a son to succeed him as king. He asks his mentor for help. His mentor remembers a vision in which the gods appealed to Vishnu to help them defeat Ravana , a demon who uses his powers for evil. Vishnu agreed to incarnate as a human to defeat Ravana. The messenger tells Dasaratha to call a specific sage to conduct a sacrifice. When the sacrifice is complete, Dasaratha's three wives bear sons. Kausalya has Rama , Kaikeyi has Bharatha , and Sumithra has the twins Lakshmana and Sathrugna .

One day, the sage Viswamithra comes to Dasaratha and asks that Rama accompany him to protect him during a sacrifice. Dasaratha is heartbroken, but agrees, and sends Lakshmana with Rama. As Viswamithra travels with the boys, he tells them the story of a demoness named Thataka . Thataka appears and threatens to eat the travelers, but Viswamithra instructs Rama to kill her. Rama does, and the gods ask Viswamithra to teach Rama about weapons. Viswamithra tells the boys several more stories before they reach the site of the sacrifice. Rama assures the sages and saints of their safety as they begin the sacrifice, and he shoots the gathered demons with his bow . Viswamithra then takes the boys to Mithila City.

When they enter the city, Rama sees a beautiful young woman on a balcony. The woman, Sita , sees Rama as well and is immediately overcome with love for him. She spends the night moving from bed to bed, trying to get comfortable. Rama does the same. The next day, Rama meets King Janaka . When he sees Rama, Janaka laments that Rama can't marry his daughter, Sita: he set the condition that a suitor must be able to lift and string Shiva 's bow , a massive bow once owned by the god. Viswamithra asks if Rama can attempt to string the bow. Rama not only strings the bow, he breaks it. A handmaid tells Sita, and she's overjoyed to learn that Rama won her hand. Janaka invites Dasaratha to the wedding in Mithila. After the ceremony, Rama's brothers marry other women from Mithila, and they return to Ayodhya, the capital city of Kosala.

Dasaratha realizes he's getting old and names Rama his successor. Rama accepts this, and they begin to prepare for Rama's coronation the following day. Everyone is happy that Rama will be king except for Kooni , Kaikeyi's companion. She convinces Kaikeyi that Rama will treat her poorly if he's crowned king. When Dasaratha comes to Kaikeyi that night, she asks him to grant her two boons that he promised her years ago, and asks that Dasaratha banish Rama to the forest for 14 years and crown Bharatha king instead. Dasaratha doesn't want to agree, but feels he must. The next morning, advisers find Dasaratha and Kaikeyi, Dasaratha in a faint. Kaikeyi explains what happened and asks for Rama. When Rama arrives, he agrees to go into exile. Ministers, Lakshmana, and Kausalya attempt to convince Rama to stay, but he insists on leaving. Rama dresses in clothes made of bark. Though he tries to convince them to stay, Lakshmana and Sita insist on joining Rama in exile. As Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita leave the city, a sad crowd follows them. Sathrugna helps the three escape unnoticed that night. When he tells Dasaratha the next day that Rama left, Dasaratha dies. When Bharatha returns to the city and finds out what happened, he dresses in bark and goes to Rama to try and convince him to return. Rama insists on remaining in exile, however, and Bharatha decides to rule as a regent from outside the city.

Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita travel far away from Ayodhya so that people won't come to convince them to return. They meet Jatayu , a great eagle who was a friend of Dasaratha's. He promises to protect Rama until he can return from exile. One day, Rama sees a beautiful woman approaching their dwelling. Though she uses a fake name, she's Soorpanaka , a demon and Ravana's sister. She tries to woo Rama and convince him to marry her, but he refuses. Soorpanaka spends the night in agony and decides the next morning that if she can kill Sita, Rama will love her. When Rama leaves the dwelling the next day, Soorpanaka stalks Sita and jumps on her. Lakshmana rescues Sita and chops off Soorpanaka's nose, ears, and breasts. When Rama returns, he tries to explain to Soorpanaka who he is, but it has no effect on her. Rama tells Lakshmana that he can kill Soorpanaka if she won't leave.

Soorpanaka crashes into Ravana's court and tells him what happened. She tells him that Sita is exceptionally beautiful and Ravana should take her for himself. Ravana falls in love with the image of Sita that Soorpanaka creates and goes to his uncle Mareecha for help. Though Mareecha is a demon, he's trying to live a virtuous life. Ravana threatens Mareecha, and Mareecha agrees to help abduct Sita.

Mareecha turns himself into a golden deer and walks near Rama's home. Sita sees the deer and asks Rama to capture it for her as a pet. Rama agrees and goes to chase the deer, leaving Lakshmana to guard Sita. Rama chases the deer for miles before he realizes it's a trap. He shoots the deer, but with his dying breath Mareecha impersonates Rama and cries for help from Sita and Lakshana. Sita hears the cry and convinces Lakshmana to go help Rama. When Lakshmana is gone, Ravana disguises himself as a Brahmin and approaches Sita. Eventually, Ravana is unable to maintain his disguise, and he assumes his demonic form. Sita cries for help, but Ravana digs into the earth and carries Sita away, along with the ground she stands on. Jatayu attempts to save Sita, but Ravana chops off his wing. Rama and Lakshmana find Jatayu and he relates to them what happened, but dies before he can tell them where Ravana was going with Sita.

In their search for Sita, Rama and Lakshmana enter the land of Kiskinda, which is populated by monkeys. There they meet Hanuman and Sugreeva . Hanuman is Sugreeva's helper and recognizes that Rama is an incarnation of Vishnu. Sugreeva is the king of Kiskinda, but his brother, Vali , banished him after a misunderstanding. Rama is moved by Sugreeva's story and offers to help kill Vali. Sugreeva calls for Vali to come fight, and the brothers clash violently. As Lakshmana and Rama watch the fight, they debate if it's right to get involved. Rama then shoots Vali from a hidden spot. Vali is surprised that someone can kill him, and asks Rama to explain his actions. Rama explains that he killed Vali to right past wrongs, and Vali accepts this and names Sugreeva his successor. After Sugreeva's coronation, Rama instructs him to gather an army and report back to him after the rainy season ends.

The rain lasts for months and Rama spends the entire time depressed. When the rains end, Sugreeva doesn't arrive. Rama sends Lakshmana to find out why, and it comes to light that Sugreeva has spent the rainy season drinking and enjoying women. Sugreeva vows to give up alcohol, however, and promptly summons his armies for Rama. Vali's son Angada and Hanuman are sent south to look for Sita. Rama gives Hanuman his ring and tells him how he can recognize Sita.

When Angada and Hanuman reach the seashore, they nearly lose hope. An advisor, however, explains to Hanuman that Hanuman has the power to grow very large. Hanuman makes himself huge and steps over the sea to Lanka, where Ravana lives. In Lanka, he makes himself small again and begins to search for Sita. He finds her in a garden where rakshasa women are tormenting her. Ravana torments her too, and when they finally leave her alone, Sita prepares to commit suicide. Hanuman shows himself to Sita and tells her that Rama is coming. As he leaves Lanka, Hanuman allows Ravana's army to capture him. He then escapes and lights the city on fire before returning to Rama.

Ravana has his city rebuilt and calls a council of his brothers and commanders. They all tell Ravana that taking Sita in the manner he did was wrong, but at this point they must fight and either win or die. Ravana's youngest brother, Vibishana , insists that Ravana give Sita back to Rama. Ravana banishes him, and Vibishana goes to Rama's camp. Hanuman declares that Vibishana has a good heart and Rama accepts him as the king of Lanka. Vibishana helps Rama form a plan of attack. When they're ready, Rama stands on the seashore and asks the sea god to help him cross the sea. The sea god finally agrees to help make a bridge with whatever Rama's army can bring. The animals help build the bridge, and Rama's army crosses into Lanka.

Ravana sends his soldiers out to fight Rama, but nobody returns. Ravana tries to convince Sita that Rama is dead, but she remains resolute and faithful to Rama. Rama sends Angada to ask Ravana to concede, but Ravana refuses and Rama officially declares war. The battle rages for days. Ravana finally decides to join the battle himself. Hanuman lifts Rama onto his shoulders and they fight Ravana. They break his crown and send him back to his palace. Ravana then wakes his brother, Kumbakarna , and sends him to the battle. When Kumbakarna dies, Ravana cries, and Lakshmana kills Ravana's son, Indrajit , not long after.

Ravana decides that he has to finish the battle himself. He dresses for battle and climbs into his chariot. The gods send Rama Indra 's chariot, which is driven by Matali . Rama gets into the chariot and the battle begins. Ravana ignores the ominous signs and chases Rama. He shoots arrows with his many arms, but none of them reach Rama. The battle moves to the sky and Rama and Ravana circle the world several times before Ravana begins using supernatural weapons. Rama destroys every attempt with either meditations or his own weapons. Finally, Rama sends a weapon at Ravana's heart and kills him. When they land, Rama notices a scar on Ravana's back and fears that he killed him dishonorably. Vibishana explains that the scar is old.

Rama sends for Sita. She dresses beautifully and presents herself in front of Rama, but he tells her that it's improper to accept her back. Distraught, Sita asks Lakshmana to build a fire, and she steps into it. The god of fire carries her back out and presents her to Rama, insisting that she's pure. Rama accepts her, but his test worries the gods. They address him and remind him that he's divine. They then send Dasaratha to earth to meet Rama, which makes Rama very happy. Finally, the gods tell Rama to return to Ayodhya, as Bharatha will kill himself if Rama doesn't return on time. Vibishana summons a magical vehicle that carries Rama and all his army to Ayodhya. They arrive just in time, and Rama and Sita are crowned king and queen and rule for many years in peace. The narrator then explains some storytelling customs, and admits that he's not telling the story of the sequel, in which Rama and Sita part again for morally questionable reasons.

Ramayana , shorter of the two great epic poems of India , the other being the Mahabharata (“Great Epic of the Bharata Dynasty”). The Ramayana was composed in Sanskrit , probably not before 300 bce , by the poet Valmiki and in its present form consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books.

The poem describes the royal birth of the god Rama in the kingdom of Ayodhya (Oudh), his tutelage under the sage Vishvamitra, and his success in bending Shiva ’s mighty bow at the bridegroom tournament of Sita , the daughter of King Janaka, thus winning her for his wife. After Rama is banished from his position as heir to the kingdom through a palace intrigue, he retreats to the forest with his wife and his favourite half brother, Lakshmana, to spend 14 years in exile. There Ravana , the demon-king of Lanka, carries off Sita to his capital while her two protectors are busy pursuing a golden deer sent to the forest to mislead them. Sita resolutely rejects Ravana’s attentions, and Rama and his brother set out to rescue her. After numerous adventures, they enter into alliance with Sugriva, king of the monkeys, and, with the assistance of the monkey-general Hanuman and Ravana’s own brother, Vibhishana, they attack Lanka. Rama slays Ravana and rescues Sita, who undergoes an ordeal by fire in order to clear herself of suspicions of infidelity. When they return to Ayodhya, however, Rama learns that the people still question the queen’s chastity, and he banishes her to the forest. There she meets the sage Valmiki (the reputed author of the Ramayana ) and at his hermitage gives birth to Rama’s two sons. The family is reunited when the sons come of age, but Sita, after again protesting her innocence, plunges into the earth, her mother, who receives her and swallows her up.

The poem enjoys immense popularity in India, where its recitation is considered an act of great merit. Little is known of Valmiki as a historical figure, though he is described as having been a thief named Ratnakara prior to becoming a sage. Many translations of the Ramayana into the vernacular languages are themselves works of great literary artistry, including the Tamil version of Kampan , the Bengali version of Krittibas, and the Hindi version, Ramcharitmanas , of Tulsidas . Throughout North India the events of the poem are enacted in an annual pageant, the Ram Lila, and in South India the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata , make up the story repertoire of the kathakali dance-drama of Malabar. The Ramayana was popular during the Mughal period (16th century), and it was a favourite subject of Rajasthani and Pahari painters of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The story also spread in various forms throughout Southeast Asia (especially Cambodia , Indonesia , and Thailand ), and its heroes, together with the Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata , were also the heroes of traditional Javanese-Balinese theatre, dance, and shadow plays. Incidents from the Ramayana are carved in bas-relief on many Indonesian monuments—for example, at Panataran in eastern Java .

My Favorite Book

Reading books is my pastime. Books are my never-falling friends. When I am out of tune with myself, I take recourse to reading books by great writers and masterminds. I have read a number of books. Some books leave a profound influence upon our minds. The book which has appealed to me the most is “My Experiments With Truth”, written by Mahatma Gandhi. It throws a flood of light on his personality and thought. It is ideas and thoughts that have moved the world. This book centers round two things: Gandhiji’s patriotism and his struggle for India’s freedom. He fought against injustice and inequality with the weapons of truth and non-violence. The book brings out how Gandhiji awakened the sleeping Indians with his moral force and aroused in them a love for liberty. The book also points out Gandhiji’s own weaknesses. To him, God was truth and truth was God. He never tried to conceal anything about his life. He believed that politics should be tempered with morality. I like this book because it has proved a turning point in my life. I have learnt a lot from this great book. It remains one of the most precious treasures of mankind. It makes a very good reading. Every sentence of this book has a touch of sincerity. It is written in a simple but effective style. It is worth reading.

A book has a great power to make us good or bad. A good books may be very useful for us while a bad book may do great harm to us. It is very easy to read books but it is difficult to select a book for reading purpose. A book gives us company. A book increases our knowledge. It improves us mentally and spiritually. So a great care is needed in selecting a good book.  The matter of the book affects the mid while reading the  book.

I have read many books. If we gain nothing after reading the cheap type of book, it means we have wasted our time in reading useless book. It is only passing the time with no benefit. I have read Ramayana written by Tulsidas. I liked it most, still I like it and it would be liked by me in future also. It influenced me most. This is my favourite book. I love it most. The book has many charms   of its own. It is more interesting than a novel. It is more philosophic than any book on philosophy.  It is a complete moral code. Hence, it has influenced me most. It contains the life story of Rama who is thought to be an incarnation of God. Hence it is a religious book which helps us to make us good an pious.

The book is full of ideals. It presents every situation of life. from the examples given in this book, we learn how we should behave with our parents, brothers, sisters, friends, enemies, teachers, learned persons, strangers, husbands, wives , sons and even the low caste people. It teaches us to be brave and sons and even the low caste people. It teaches us to be brave and cheerful in all circumstances. Thus, we may call it the best book for character- building in the world.

Rama was the son of King Dashrath of Ayodhya. He was  a wonderful man. To obey the orders of his father, he went into exile for 14 years. His wife Sita, and brother Lakshman went with him. Ravana the King of Lanka stole away Sita. Lord Rama invaded Lanka and defeated Ravana. He got his wife back. Rama protected Rishis and killed demons. Sita as an ideal wife, was the follower of Rama in all his joys and sorrows. Rama’s father Dashrath, died of grief without Rama but kept his word. Rama obeyed his father’s wish and brother, Lakshman went with him to serve him with heart and soul. Bharat too did not accept crown but ruled over Ayodhya as Rama’s Steward.

Ram loved the people and the people respected him. He treated the low caste boatman as his own brother. In the forest of Chitra Koot, he treated the Bhils as his own men. He became a true protector of all sages in trouble. His friendship with Sugriva is an example for us. Hanuman proved his true follower. Site lived the life of purity and devotion in Lanka.

Thus we see that victory comes to the good people. The wicked people suffer in the end. Ramayana gives us Consolation when we are in trouble.  

Essay No. 3

Books are the best food for our mind. They give us a peculiar joy and we forget all the cares and worries of life. the serious books are intended for sober and thoughtful  minds. They mold our thought and give us a proper direction. They are the best guides and philosophers. I  an myself greatly influenced by Bhagwad Gita, the greatest book which India has produced so far. It has no rival. It teaches us the secrets of ideal life and duty.

Bhagawad Gita tells us that we should do our duty at all times whatever  the duty is at the moment and forget everything else. When we do our duty, we should not look for any kind of reward. When our duty is done properly, it is its own reward. We should not do anything for our profits and we should not be afraid of losses. Whatever we do, it should be done out of a high sense of duty.

In order to do our duties properly, Bhagawad Gita tells us, we should rise above the pains of opposites. Neither could nor heat should disturbed us. We should not care for gains and losses, pleasures and pains. We should keep our minds steady like a flame in a hurricane lamp which is not disturbed by the wind outside.

Bhagawad Gita embodies a message for Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the battle of Mahabharata, Arjuna was unwilling to fight because he would not like to kill his kith and kin. But Lord Krishna told him that was his duty at the moment  because they were responsible for much evil in the world. Besides, the people whom he was to kill were already killed by God. He was only to lift his sword and they would fall. He was not the killer. True killer was God. The time for the death  of Kurus had come. He was only an agent of the will go God.

Bhagawad Gita  does not tell us to renounce the world for Godly pursuits but instructs to be more active in the worldly affairs but not be involved himself in the love of this world. The life here is all temporary and as such being attached to the world is the biggest blunder. We have to live this life temporarily and prepare for a larger life beyond this world. Love of the people is the actual love of God is what Bhagawad Gita teaches.

The books are true friends. They guide our life. They make us know the world around us.

I have read many books written by different authors, but the Ramayana is my favourite book. It is a holy book. It is a sacred book of the Hindus.

I feel happy on reading about the death of proudy Ravana and his relatives. We should follow the example of Lord Rama, Laskshman, Bharat and Hanuman.

A great-wise man wrote them. His name is Saint Tulsi Das. The Ramayana is one of the best book in the world. It guides me like a faithful teacher.

It has been translated into many languages. He provided a key to all problems in life. This book was given to me as a present by my aunt.

I like to read and re-read them. Many of them I remember very well. I like to tell them to my friends and my younger sister.

It makes me successful in every walk of life. I am lucky to have it. In short, it is a source of knowledge, wisdom and light.

It may be a book having a novel, a drama or a number of poems in it. It may be a picture book. Whichever interests you, you may go in for it.

People call me a book-worm. But they are in the wrong. I like books but I am not a book-worm. I read books, which give me a great interest. I like tales of heroism. Therefore, I like the Ramayana. The Ramayana written in English by Rajagopalacharya, the late Governor General of India is a very good book. But I like Hindi Ramayana, which is called ‘Ram Charit Manas’, written by Goswami Tulsi Dass, the great Indian Saint poet. The verses in Hindi are really interesting. I have read the English version of it as told earlier. Therefore, I know the story of the Ramayana.

Because I am fond of singing songs, therefore I sing verses of ‘Ram Charit Manas’. I like the story of the Lord Rama, as he was an ideal son of his ideal father. He was an ideal ruler of an ideal country. He was an ideal husband of an ideal wife. He was an ideal brother of Lakshmana, another ideal brother. Again he was an ideal ruler, who saved the people. Everyone could approach him at the time of distress.

Lord Rama’s tale of heroism has actually moved my heart. I wish that the people of the country should follow his foot-steps. He was great in many respects. We can be proud to know that our country had such a great ruler. Perhaps, for this reason the people used to worship Lord Rama as they do even today.

Lord Rama fought against the forces of evil and injustice. He used to serve and help the saints and people of his time. It is great quality of any ruler. He was a hero. He knew what he had to do. He followed his own principles of life. He was humble. His life teaches us a lot.

If we want to build the character of a nation, we shall have to follow the principles of life of such a great man.

I like the Ramayana because of the finest pictures that it has got. These pictures are highly alluring and astonishing. One of those pictures depicts fighting scene of Lord Rama against Ravana, the king of Lanka. It is a wonderful and lively picture of wonderful fight. I like books of songs and dramas also and I like singing. It keeps me happy at those moments when sorrow haunts my mind. I sing sweet songs. Besides Ramayana or Ram Charit Manas, there are many other books of historical importance. These books throw light on many events. These books tell us of our ancient culture. I like books on culture. The Ramayana satisfies me in every way. It is one of the finest books on Indian culture and history. It is a book in verse. I can sing songs whenever I am lonely. It serves both the purposes. Therefore, I like this book very much.

It is always better to read one book with interest than to read out many books without interest. Therefore, I shall tell you all how to choose your favourite book very carefully. This book should keep you absorbed and at the time it should give you much benefit in times of leisure. Choosing a favourite book is really a difficult job. But I have already chosen my favourite book about which I have already made a mention.

Essay on the Ramayana | Indian History

Here is an essay on the Ramayana.

The Ramayana is known as the Adi Kavya (the earliest narrative poem). It contains 24,000 verses and is divided into seven books. The central theme of this epic is the con­flict between Rama, a representative of the Aryan civilization, and Ravana, a representative of the non-Aryan civilisation.

The style is simple and direct and does not indulge the literary gymnastics so common among later classical writers. There are few episodes which are not connected with the main story. The text of Ramayana was not regarded as sacred as that of the Vedas and therefore different recessions of the book were formed.

According to the story of the Ramayana, King Dasaratha ruled over Kosala (northern Oudha) with Ayodhya as his capital. He had three wives, Kaushalya, the chief queen, Sumitra and Kaikayi. He had four sons—Rama, (the eldest son born of Kaushalya), Lakshmana and Shatrughana (born of Sumitra) and Bharat (son of the youngest queen Kaikayi).

ADVERTISEMENTS:

When Dashratha grew old, he wished Rama to succeed him to the throne, and therefore, appointed him Yuvraj.

This was quite distasteful to Kaikayi, the youngest queen, who wanted her son Bharat to succeed Dashrath. Utilizing the two promises or vardans given by King Dashratha in the past, she demanded the exile of Rama for 14 years, and throne for her son Bharat.

Rama as a dutiful son proceeded on exile with his wife and Lakshman, his brother who loved him most. Bharat, who also loved Rama very much, also refused to accept the throne and followed him in jungles. However, on persuasion of Rama he returned to Ayodhya and continued to rule in the name of Rama during the period of his exile.

During the course of exile while Rama was living in the forest at Panchavati near Nasik, Ravana’s sister visited them and asked Laxman to marry her. Laxman not only refused to marry her but also insulted her. Ravana, the demon king, took revenge for the insult of his sister by abducting Sita to Lanka (Ceylon).

Rama and Laxman marched towards Lanka to rescue Sita. On the way Rama helped Sughriva to regain his lost kingdom from Bali. As a token of gratitude for this favour Sughriva offered the services of Hanuman, his able army general.

Ultimately as a result of the great battle between Rama and Ravana at Lanka, Ravana was defeated and killed. Sita was brought back. In the meanwhile the term of fourteen years of exile was over and Rama returned to Ayodhya and became the king. He continued to rule for a long time.

However, the troubles of Rama were not over and he was forced to send away Sita from his palace because her chastity was suspected by some of the subjects. Sita ultimately found shelter in the ashrama of Valmiki and gave birth to Lava and Kusha.

Rama discovered about the identity of these two sons only when he performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice and his horse was detained by these brave boys. These boys later on succeeded Rama.
