DEEP LEARNING

According to ARK, Deep Learning could be the most important software breakthrough of our time.  According to ARK's research, deep learning will add $30 trillion to the global equity market capitalization during the next 15-20 years. Deep Learning is creating the next generation of computing platforms including: 

  • Conversational computers: Powered by AI, smart speakers answered 100 billion voice commands in 2020, 75% more than in 2019.
  • Self-driving cars: Waymo's autonomous vehicles have collected more than 20 million real-world driving miles across 25 cities, including San Francisco, Detroit, and Phoenix.
  • Consumer apps: TikTok, which uses deep learning for video recommendations, has outgrown Snapchat and Pinterest combined.

Deep Learning is software 2.0 

Deep Learning requires boundless computational power. ARK states: "While advances in hardware and software have been driving down AI training costs by 37% per year, the size of AI models is growing much faster, 10x per year. As a result, total AI training costs continue to climb. We believe that state-of-the-art AI training model costs1 are likely to increase 100-fold, from roughly $1 million today to more than $100 million by 2025."

Deep Learning will also create a boom in the AI chips. ARK estimates that data center spending on AI processors will scale more than four-fold during the next five years, from $5 billion a year today to $22 billion in 2025. ARK is forecasting an expansion of AI from vision to language. The reports notes: "2020 was the breakthrough year for conversational AI. For the first time, AI systems could understand and generate language with human-like accuracy. Conversational AI requires 10x the computing resources of computer vision and should spur large investments in the coming years."

Perhaps the biggest bold estimate in the reports is that Deep Learning could create more economic value than the Internet did. ARK believes that deep learning will add $30 trillion to equity market capitalizations during the next 15-20 years.

VIRTUAL WORLDS

A virtual world is defined as a computer-simulated environment (video games, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR)), that can be accessed by anyone at any time. Society interacts daily with virtual worlds which today are in their infancy. According to ARK, revenue from virtual worlds will compound 17% annually from roughly $180 billion today to $390 billion by 2025. 

By 2022, consumer-grade AR headsets should turbocharge investments in augmented reality on mobile devices.  ARK forecasts that by 2030 the AR market could scale from under a $1 billion today to $130 billion. ARK estimates that virtual reality could approach realty by 2030 with best-in-class VR headsets only achieving 10% of human visual immersion today.

The revenue from virtual worlds could approach $400 billion by 2025. Based on our research, the global gaming market will increase at a 16% compound annual rate during the next five years, from $175 billion in 2020 to roughly $365 billion by 2025. The AR & VR markets will grow at a 59% compound annual rate during the next five years, from $3 billion to $28 billion in 2025.

Digital wallets

ARK estimates that digital wallets represent a $4.6 trillion opportunity in your pocket. ARK points to Venmo, Cash App, and venture funded startups who are likely to upend traditional banking by activating the mobile phones — the bank branches — in users' pockets and handbags.

According to ARK's research, digital wallets are valued between $250 and $1,900 per user today but could scale to $20,000 per user, representing a $4.6 trillion opportunity in the US by 2025. ARK references China as the best example of digital wallet adoption. Per ARK: The volume of mobile payments in China has exploded more than 15-fold in just five years, from roughly $2 trillion in 2015 to an estimated $36 trillion, nearly three times the size of China's GDP in 2020.

Digital wallets are now a global phenomenon 

In the US, digital wallet users are surpassing the number of deposit account holders at the largest financial institutions. Square's Cash App and PayPal's Venmo each amassed roughly 60 million active users organically in the last 7 and 10 years, respectively, a milestone that took J.P. Morgan more than 30 years and five acquisitions to reach.

The most important takeaway here is that digital wallets can acquire customers for a fraction of banks' customer acquisition cost.  According to ARK's research, compared to the roughly $1,000 that a traditional financial institution might pay to acquire a new checking account customer, digital wallets invest only $20 thanks to viral peer-to-peer payment ecosystems, savvy marketing strategies, and dramatically lower cost structures. Given the rising cost of bank branches, the benefits of mobile banking and digital wallets is key to offset expenditures and also deliver a more seamless user experience.

ARK highlights a potential sizable risk to traditional banks. According to ARK estimates, bank interest income on credit cards fell more than 10%, or roughly $16 billion in 2020 and is likely to drop more than 25% further, from $130 billion in 2019 to $95 billion by 2025. ARK also estimates that at maturity, each digital wallet user could be worth about $20,000. If digital wallets were to become consumer financial dashboards, ARK estimates that the net present value associated with their financial service revenues will exceed $10,000 per average US user.

Bitcoin fundamentals

As bitcoin's price hit an all-time high, ARK's research indicated that its network fundamentals remained healthy. Per ARK research, if all S&P 500 companies were to allocate 1% of their cash to bitcoin, ARK estimates that its price would increase by approximately $40,000.  As of November 2020, roughly 60% of Bitcoin's supply had not moved in more than a year, a testament to the market's longer-term focus and a holder base with stronger conviction. Another interesting data point about the hype around bitcoins is that ARK shows that bitcoin's search interest is low relative to the increase in its price. As its price neared all-time highs, Bitcoin's Google search interest was at 15% of its all-time high.

ARK notes that Bitcoin could play a pivotal role as corporate cash. The research sites Square and MicroStrategy, both with balance sheet investments in bitcoin, are showing the way for public companies to deploy bitcoin as a legitimate alternative to cash. According to our research, if all S&P 500 companies were to allocate 1% of their cash to bitcoin,1 its price could increase by approximately $40,000.

Electric Vehicles 

2021 is the year of EVs.  Electric vehicles are approaching sticker price parity with gas-powered cars. Leaders in the EV market are developing innovative battery designs to enable longer range vehicles at lower costs.

Based on Wright's Law, ARK forecasts that EV sales should increase roughly 20-fold from ~2.2 million in 2020 to 40 million units in 2025. ARK believes the biggest downside risk to our forecast is whether traditional automakers can transition successfully to electric and autonomous vehicles. The total cost of ownership for a like-for-like EV dropped below that of a Toyota Camry in 2019.1 Soon, sticker prices likely will do the same. The auto market is undergoing a shift to both electric and autonomous. ARK believes that traditional automakers lack the software and electrical engineering talent necessary to succeed.

If traditional automakers overcome obstacles, global EV sales could scale roughly 20-fold from 2.2 million in 2020 to 40 million by 2025. ARK expects that sales of smaller, cheaper, "neighborhood electric vehicles" will rise dramatically as a share of total EV sales.

There are some things that machines are simply better at doing than humans, but humans still have plenty going for them. Here's a look at how the two are going to work in concert to deliver a more powerful future for IT, and the human race.

The robots are coming to help you and create jobs. Per ARK: automation has the potential to shift unpaid labor to paid labor. For example, as food services automate, they will transform food prep, cleanup, and grocery shopping into market activities including food delivery.

ARK believes automation will add 5%, or $1.2 trillion to US GDP during the next five years. Thanks to increased productivity and automation, ARK expects a combination of the following four outcomes:

  • Higher wages: benefiting employees
  • Lower prices: benefiting consumers
  • Higher margins: benefiting companies
  • Higher investments: creating virtuous cycles

According to ARK's research, for every percentage drop in labor share in the industrial and agricultural sectors, operating margins increased 30 basis points and 280 basis points, respectively. ARK would not be surprised to see a similar relationship in all industries. If labor share were to fall 15%, in line with manufacturing, operating margins could double to more than 20%.

The big ideas 2021 report from ARK is incredibly insightful. Here are some more bold predictions you can find in the report: 

  • AUTONOMOUS RIDE-HAILING : ARK's research suggests that autonomous ride-hailing platforms will generate more than $1 trillion in profits per year by 2030. In addition, automakers and fleet owners could enjoy profits of $250 billion and $70 billion, respectively. Enterprise value for autonomous platform operators could scale to 3.8T by 2025.
  • DRONES :  ARK believes that drone delivery platforms will generate roughly $275 billion in delivery revenues, $50 billion in hardware sales, and $12 billion in mapping revenue by 2030. ARK estimates that at some point during the next five years, drones will deliver more than 20% of parcel shipments and significantly drive e-commerce adoption. While not yet commercialized, ARK estimates that drone delivery platforms will generate nearly $50 billion in revenues, $14 billion in hardware sales, and $3 billion in mapping revenues by 2025.
  • 3D PRINTING : ARK believes 3D printing will revolutionize manufacturing, growing at an annual rate of roughly 60% from $12 billion last year to $120 billion in 2025.  ARK estimates that drone hardware revenues will total roughly $100 billion by 2025.

In our still relatively brief existence, humans have evolved our way to an era many are now calling the Anthropocene – a new geological epoch defined by human impact on Earth. But our unparalleled creativity is a double-edge sword. We are undeniably contributing to many of the global challenges now facing our species, and all species who share this planet.

At the same time, it is because of our impact that the world needs human innovation now more than ever. We know we must stabilize our climate. We know we must meet the resource needs of a growing global population. We know we must save the ecosystems that sustain all life. And we know we won’t get there on our current path.

Science makes new paths possible. It underpins the lives of each and every one of us—from the medicines we give our children to the vast networks of information at our fingertips. And at The Nature Conservancy, science has guided everything we do for more than 65 years. Today, more than 600 Conservancy scientists are working all over the world to discover and apply solutions to the biggest challenges facing people and the planet . From new bio-energy solutions to the increasing mapping precision of drones, here are some of our favorite recent scientific innovations.

Facial Recognition Technology, for Fish

How do you recognize a fish’s face? Serious question.

Consider the state of global fisheries . The old business adage, “If it doesn’t get measured, it doesn’t get managed” applies to fisheries, too. And of more than 10,000 fisheries in the world, fewer than 440 are assessed.

With fish catches taking place at sea, and on many boats, it’s impossible for managers or conservationists to be there monitoring fish species and harvest levels. That’s why The Nature Conservancy is developing a system called FishFace to collect, organize and share data essential to sustainable fisheries management.

FishFace uses facial recognition technology. This is similar to the computer applications capable of identifying a person from a digital photograph or video frame. For people, it is often used in solving crimes. FishFace will be used to identify information on the species and numbers of fish caught, as well as measuring the length of each fish – all information needed to assess the condition of the fishery and manage it well. Every fish caught and processed can then be identified and traced through the supply chain with accurate information of what it is.

It’s being tested in Indonesia’s deep-water snapper and grouper fisheries and in the Western Central Pacific tuna fisheries with the potential to be rolled out for fisheries elsewhere.

Batteries Powered By Blood

Batteries powered by blood or salt instead of lithium? Alternative energy production modeled on the cells of giant clams ? Science to determine how soil can be used to fight climate change? This isn’t science fiction or even wishful thinking, it’s the ongoing and applied work of The Nature Conservancy’s NatureNet Science Fellows.

The fellows work on the future-forward science the world needs to mitigate climate change, including nanotechnology research and development for viable large-scale clean energy production and storage.

The program is a partnership between the Conservancy and leading research universities (including Penn, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, UCLA, Stanford, Cornell and others), and “signals to the world that conservation needs to base its work not just in ecology and biology, but in an interdisciplinary approach to science and evidence,” says Roy Vagelos, a founding funder of the NatureNet Science Fellows program, member of the Conservancy’s board of directors and former president, CEO and chairman of Merck & Co.

Vagelos sees the program as a way to “push the Conservancy and the world in new and necessary directions as we work to solve global sustainability challenges around energy, water and agriculture.”

Camera Traps: What Critters Do When We’re Not Watching

Perhaps no technology has connected more people to the wonder and mystery of the natural world than the camera, and its direct descendant: the ever-more versatile and useful camera trap.

The development of the camera trap itself is a story of human curiosity and innovation rooted in the cultural fascination with nature photography that flourished in England around the end of the 19 th century. That was when photographer George Shiras developed one of the first successful remote camera traps by hacking together a camera, a flashlight and an ingenious system of trip wires. When wild animals tripped the wires they photographed themselves. No human needed to release the shutter.

And sure, using cameras to photograph and record wild animals remotely – without human presence in a blind or behind a telephoto lens – seems obvious now, but it took a fair amount of innovation and imagination to get where we are today: with compact, low-weight, long-lived, high resolution, motion-sensitive cameras that can be strapped to trees or mounted on rocks or otherwise left unattended in the wild to record and store massive amounts of high resolution images, sounds, videos and other data collected over weeks or months.

Modern cameras can be powered by solar energy, withstand humidity, heat, rain and cold (really cold – some remote cameras are rated to -20 F), use infrared and motion sensors instead of trip wires, and even transmit real-time images over cellular networks to the smart phone in your pocket.

All of which makes the camera trap one of conservation science’s most versatile tools. Scientists all over the world – from researchers to citizen scientists – use them. Some scientists even use them to capture gallery-worthy images . At the Conservancy, scientists continue to develop innovative ways to use camera traps to measure biodiversity conservation, including watching for Venus flytrap poachers in North Carolina’s Green Swamp, measuring the impact of feral camels on watering holes in Australia’s remote Martu country , monitoring the effectiveness of prescribed fire, and documenting some of the world’s most elusive creatures, from snow leopards in Mongolia to birds-of-paradise in Papua New Guinea.

Drones, Lasers and Artificial Intelligence: New Technologies Revolutionizing Field Science

If you want to get technical about it, the practice of remote sensing began in the 1840s, when intrepid observers combined cameras and balloons to take pictures of the Earth below. Over the next 170 years, remote sensing (the term itself was coined and defined by Evelyn Pruitt of the U.S. Office of Naval Research in the 1950s) has moved so far beyond those first aerial photographs it would make Jules Verne’s head spin.

Today, remote sensing – the art and science of “identifying, observing, and measuring an object without coming into direct contact with it” encompasses an array of tools – from high-resolution satellite imagery to lasers that measure minute shifts in glaciers and shorelines to small, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) that can photograph, map and record vast amounts of data to resolutions of 2 centimeters.

Conservancy scientists, like Steve Schill, are at the forefront of developing and applying all the tools of remote sensing – including drones – to inform and guide conservation and development decisions around the world. In Gabon, scientists used drones to map 9000 km 2 of otherwise largely inaccessible wetlands . In the Caribbean, Schill mapped and surveyed habitats above and below the water with a drone that could take off and land on water . (The secret to its amphibious capabilities: a common Tupperware container. Schill and one of his students modified an existing drone to make it both buoyant and waterproof). In the United States, scientists are testing the facility of drones equipped with multispectral cameras for monitoring water quality in small streams and wetlands.

As UAV technology continues to advance – drones get smaller, more capable and less expensive – their utility for field science may be almost limitless.

Other technologies have similarly advanced. Terra-i, is an artificial intelligence program that uses real-time rainfall data to predict how green a given habitat should be — and then matches that prediction up against images of the habitat from an Earth-monitoring satellite. And lidar, a way of remotely mapping forests with lasers, has proven to be an effective and accurate tool to measure the effects of reduced-impact logging in Indonesia .

Bioacoustics: Capturing the Rainforest’s Wall of Sound

Stand outside in any natural environment, close your eyes, and listen. You’ll hear birds calling, or crickets chirping, or frogs croaking. Those sounds of the natural world are bioacoustics, and they’re more than just a nice soundtrack — they’re valuable data for scientists and conservationists.

An emerging field of research, called bioacoustics , is now using the entire scope of data, often called the soundscape, as a rough measure of biodiversity.

Researchers deploy sensitive acoustic and ultrasonic recorders in the forest. The acoustic recorders capture sounds between 1 and 24 kilohertz, roughly within the normal range of human hearing, including vocalizations from birds, some bats, frogs, mammals, and most insects. The ultrasonic recorders pick up sound up to 96 kilohertz, allowing us to gather data on bats and insects that vocalize at frequencies beyond the range of human hearing.

These acoustics provide a rough estimate of biodiversity, enabling researchers to determine if conservation activities are working. Bioacoustics is currently being deployed by The Nature Conservancy to determine the best forest management practices for wildlife conservation in Borneo, and to determine the conservation effectiveness of land use plans in Papua New Guinea .

Precision Agriculture: Saving Money, Saving Water

In many parts of the world, farmers rely on irrigation to water their crops. It’s a very effective tactic for growing food in more arid regions, but it can also result in a lot of wasted water. Water can be lost to irrigation, and areas like wetlands or rock outcroppings where crops don’t grow are often watered too.

Often, farms treat large fields as a single unit, applying the same amount of water (or fertilizer or pesticide) across the entire area. But conditions can vary widely, so a lot of resources end up wasted.

Farmers are increasingly looking to precision agriculture to reduce costs and to reduce inputs. Using a combination of technologies – including drones, computer applications and sensors – farmers can determine the right levels of inputs for each square foot of a field.

Improvements to irrigation technology and precision agriculture are being deployed by The Nature Conservancy and partners in the Flint River of Georgia, where they are saving billions of gallons of water a year while still producing crops. The water that doesn’t go onto fields remains for wildlife, like native fish and imperiled freshwater mussels. At Idaho’s Silver Creek , a globally famous trout stream, the brewer MillerCoors has worked with the Conservancy to install new sprinklers, nozzles, and computer-controlled irrigation on adjacent farms that save millions of gallons of water every day.

Soil Ravioli and Bat-Saving Bananas

Savvy conservationists are increasingly looking to other research fields, new industry developments and even local home supply stores to find the solutions to challenging conservation problems.

A common bacterium being tested to inhibit fungal growth on supermarket bananas was found to also be the first successful treatment for bats suffering from the devastating White-Nose Syndrome.

Oregon conservationists struggled to find ways to get native sagebrush seeds to survive planting – until they created a special soil mix using a pasta maker . These “ravioli” seed pellets have a 70 percent better chance of survival than if the seeds were just scattered on the land.

Advances in how we understand microbes have applications from healthcare to creating new materials. Microbes can also assist in conservation. For instance, soil microbes may be the best way to attack cheatgrass , an invasive, non-native plant that has thus far proven impervious to other control measures.

And sometimes research finds solutions at the local hardware store. Using PVC pipe and a generator, conservationists can create the sounds of running water that lure migratory shad into shipping locks. This gets them over dams and to their spawning habitat. On Florida’s Apalachicola River, this simple fix increased the shad getting past the dam from 10,000 fish to 250,000 fish in two years.

For 75 years, NIMH has transformed the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research—bringing hope to millions of people. This Director’s Message, guest-written by NIMH’s Division of Extramural Activities , is part of an anniversary series celebrating this momentous milestone.

You may have seen some of the headlines about groundbreaking advancements in mental health treatment, like the one about the first medication specifically developed for people with postpartum depression . Or maybe you or someone you know has experienced mental health care firsthand—such as coordinated specialty care or suicide risk screening .

Breakthroughs like these are driven by research investments. Each year, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) spends about $1.8 billion to support cutting-edge mental health research at institutions worldwide. This substantial investment is not just a figure; it represents a deep commitment to research that addresses urgent public health challenges with precision and impact.

A lot happens behind the scenes to turn this billion-dollar investment into discoveries that advance mental health care and improve millions of lives. In NIMH’s Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) , we help bring scientific ideas to fruition, through our wide-ranging expertise in science, policy, and administration.

As we celebrate NIMH's 75th Anniversary , we’re excited to provide a behind-the-scenes look at how this all happens. This Director’s Message highlights DEA's three branches and how our work helps transform innovative ideas into impactful research.

Clear communications and strong community ties

Funding innovative research starts with clear communications and strong relationships with the research community. DEA’s Extramural Policy Branch works together with NIMH’s programmatic offices and divisions to develop notices of funding opportunities. We want to attract high-quality research proposals, so we’re working to ensure our announcements are clear and accessible to researchers and the public. These announcements tell the research community about the availability of funding for a specific area of research and set the stage for high-impact science.

The Extramural Policy Branch also coordinates meetings of the National Advisory Mental Health Council . The council comprises scientists and public health leaders who advise the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the NIMH Director on developing the institute’s research priorities, programs, and policies. Each meeting, including the one coming up next month, includes an open policy session, which is open to anyone who wants to learn more about NIMH’s activities and priorities. The meetings also include a comment period during which members of the public—including researchers, advocacy groups, and people with lived experience—have an opportunity to share their comments and perspectives.

Research quality through rigorous review

We want the best research proposals to rise to the top, and that depends on impartial, informed, and thoughtful peer review. This critical task falls to DEA’s Extramural Review Branch , which manages the initial review of grant applications and contract proposals received by NIMH. Our highly skilled scientific review officers keep pace with the research field and assemble panels of peer reviewers that reflect where the field is now and where it is going in the future. In addition, scientific review officers manage reviewer conflicts of interest and work with researchers and program staff to ensure objective and impartial peer review meetings. The goal is to provide all applicants with fair and constructive feedback on their applications, whether those applications are funded or not.

The branch also spearheads several programs to enrich and broaden the peer review process at NIMH. For example, the Public Reviewer Program invites members of the public, including people with lived experience of mental illness, to contribute to peer review. Public reviewers’ first-hand perspectives help the review committee evaluate whether applications are practical and relevant to the real world.

A second, complementary program encourages people to self-nominate to serve as NIMH peer reviewers . The program offers opportunities for scientists, particularly those in the early stages of their careers, to make significant scientific contributions to peer review. Peer reviewers are essential in ensuring NIMH invests in meaningful, rigorous science. To date, about 500 people have submitted self-nominations through this program.

Support for research success

Selecting the grants that NIMH will fund is only one part of the process. From the initial concept to the funded award, applicants and their institutions must follow many detailed steps to achieve grant success. These steps are often technical and sometimes complex, requiring expert knowledge of the system's inner workings. This is where DEA’s Grants Management Branch comes in. Throughout the entire application process, branch staff work with applicants to ensure their applications meet all the necessary criteria and comply with federal statutes, regulations, and guidelines.

Once a grant application is selected for funding, branch staff work with program staff and research institutions to finalize the many details of the award. These details include appropriate funding levels, budget and project periods, milestones, reporting requirements, and other project-specific needs. Once the details are hammered out, grants management staff develop the official Notice of Award  , a legal document that allows for the obligation of federal funds.

Together, the team currently manages over 3,600 grants and cooperative agreements. This includes complex grant programs that span multiple institutes, agencies, and outside organizations, such as the Early Psychosis Intervention Network and the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® Program for Schizophrenia .

Advancing the mission—by the numbers

To understand the full scope of DEA’s programs, it helps to look at the numbers. Over the last 3 fiscal years, DEA published over 240 funding-related notices, received more than 8,300 grant applications, and conducted 170 peer review meetings. The result: more than 1,800 grant awards totaling over $1.3 billion.

Although DEA’s work may not always capture the spotlight, it is an unseen force that propels NIMH’s mission forward. Behind the scenes, DEA orchestrates the entire life cycle of every NIMH research grant, engaging with the public and collaborating across NIMH, NIH, and the global research community. These efforts are key to ensuring the transparency, integrity, and effectiveness of NIMH’s research activities.

As we look ahead, DEA is poised to support the next wave of scientific discoveries that could transform mental health care over the next 75 years—our investment in a brighter future.

Three UCF faculty members have been awarded fellowships by the UCF Office of Research to advance the university’s research efforts over the coming year.

The selected fellows — Vladimir Boginski, Nichole Lighthall and Dinender Singla — will develop and implement programs that can help improve faculty grant success and accelerate the growth of the research enterprise.

Topics the fellows will focus on include research infrastructure, proposal development and specific research awards.

The fellowship begins in Fall 2024 and will continue through Summer 2025.

Meet the new Research Faculty Fellows:

Vladimir Boginski

Professor of industrial engineering and management systems and co-director of UCF’s Applied Operations Research Laboratory

How does it feel to be selected as a faculty fellow?

I am honored to be selected by the Office of Research as one of the faculty fellows this academic year. I am looking forward to the opportunity to use my experience in conducting interdisciplinary research and participating in large multi principal investigator grants to help UCF reach its strategic goals in terms of research funding and expenditures.

How do you hope to use this fellowship to further your research?

I hope that my experience in this role will be beneficial to my own research program development. I view this fellowship as a “two-way” opportunity. On one hand, I will be happy to offer my experience with various aspects of large grants and use it to the benefit of UCF achieving strategic funding goals. On the other hand, I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the high-level strategic and administrative aspects of sponsored research that the UCF Office of Research deals with. In addition, it would be very interesting to learn about UCF faculty research in various fields and potentially identify new opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Therefore, I believe that this fellowship would be beneficial both to my own academic research career and to UCF.

What is your background in research and what does your work focus on?

My research background and interests are in the broad area of network science and engineering. Networks are everywhere in the modern world: application areas are abundant and diverse, spanning the domains of big data and physical/virtual complex systems. Examples of real-world networked systems include communication networks, interdependent infrastructure networks, social networks, biological networks, financial networks and many others. Because everything is connected in one way or another, my research spans a multitude of disciplines. Although specific details of my research may vary depending on the field, the underlying broad goals are often the same: to identify nodes and links that are critical for the integrity of a network, and to optimize the connections so that each system functions more efficiently.

What else should Knight Nation know about you?

Prior to joining UCF, I was a faculty member at the University of Florida, and during my academic career I have served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on multiple grants for over $16 million. I have always valued the exposure to research disciplines different from my own background, and I was honored be nominated to participate in the Frontiers of Engineering program administered by the National Academy of Engineering, which connects and facilitates collaborations between engineers across different fields. In this fellowship role, I hope to participate in initiatives to promote interdisciplinary research collaborations between UCF faculty.

Nichole Lighthall

Associate professor of psychology, lab director of UCF’s Adult Development and Decision Lab and associate program director of UCF’s Human Factors and Cognitive Psychology Ph.D. Program

I feel honored to be selected — and excited to have the opportunity to train in university leadership. The primary feeling has been joy over getting to work with UCF faculty who want to gain more skills and success in grant development. I’ve already gotten involved in the Office of Research’s Grant Writing Academy and the faculty in that program are so motivated and excited about their research. It’s going to be very fulfilling to help them achieve their goals.

My primary goal for the fellowship is to enhance UCF’s success in securing funding from The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and generally expand its health-related research portfolio. As a cognitive neuroscientist working in cognitive aging, I depend on NIH funding to conduct my research. So, any success toward my fellowship goal will help my research program grow as well.

I have been studying cognitive aging since I was an undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley over 20 years ago. Over time, my research interest came to focus on how decision-making changes in healthy aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Most recently, my lab has been trying to understand risk factors for financial exploitation in older adults, and how we can better protect seniors from scams and fraud. To address these questions, we use behavioral and neuroimaging approaches, but also consider social, cultural, and health factors that might make some seniors more vulnerable.

Dinender Singla

Professor of medicine, UCF cardiovascular division leader and Florida Hospital chair in cardiovascular science

Being selected as a faculty fellow is an extraordinary accomplishment, and I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. I feel a profound sense of pride in this achievement and am eager to contribute to the institution and its faculty.

This fellowship will enhance my in-depth research knowledge as I meet different faculty members, unit chairs, and deans. I took this position primarily because I want to serve the faculty at large, and I am keen to see their growth. This role allows me to mentor and guide other unit faculty, inspiring them to reach their full potential. The faculty growth is essential and will positively impact the lives of countless postdoctoral fellows and students. These insights and expertise will be highly valuable and will carry weight in shaping the future direction of different colleges, and university, which will ultimately support our community.

I have over 25 years of research experience in basic and translational research in cardiovascular sciences. I have brought more than $12 million in NIH grant funding to UCF. My major research area is stem cells and their derived exosomes for treating diabetes and anti-cancer drugs-induced cardiotoxicity. We have recently prepared specialized exosomes which can target tumors and kill them. Additionally, we have prepared exosomes to deliver drugs in the heart. This new research will lead to treat cancer patients more precisely. I am head of the Division of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Sciences in the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, which is part of UCF’s College of Medicine.

Ohio State study shows benefits of taking probiotics during pregnancy

A mouse study led by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and The Ohio State University College of Medicine recently revealed that when probiotics were given to pregnant mice, both the mother mouse and its offspring benefited.

The results suggest that, for pregnant humans and their children, certain probiotics can improve the metabolism of common amino acids in our diets when the probiotics are given during pregnancy, says Tamar Gur, MD, PhD, the senior study author.

“Probiotics may also help counteract the negative effects of prenatal stress ,” Dr. Gur says.

How probiotics work during fetal development

Probiotics, live microorganisms that are found in naturally fermented foods, can help support healthy digestive systems and immune systems. They’re considered safe to take in supplement form during pregnancy.

One particular probiotic, Bifidobacterium dentium, might change the way our bodies process certain amino acids like tryptophan, says first study author Jeffrey Galley, PhD.

Tryptophan is perhaps most well-known for being in turkey and making you feel tired. Turkey doesn’t actually have large amounts of tryptophan compared to other foods, and your Thanksgiving-dinner sluggishness may really be due to eating a large meal. But tryptophan does affect newborn sleep rhythm development, as well as the development of their brains and food intake regulation. It’s one of nine essential proteins the body needs to stay healthy, and it’s a major building block for newborn development.

During pregnancy, tryptophan can help control inflammation, too.

What Ohio State has learned about probiotics and pregnancy

Previous research from the Gur Laboratory at Ohio State found that microbes that help metabolize tryptophan decrease with stress . They’ve also examined how stress in pregnancy can lead to abnormal brain development and behavioral changes in offspring.

“We have strong evidence this specific probiotic [Bifidobacterium dentium] helped reduce stress-related problems in both mothers and their offspring, including helping the babies gain weight and improving their social behavior,” Dr. Gur says.

What’s next in research

The team’s next goal, Dr. Gur says, is to understand the mechanisms behind the changes they observed in mice, and look at ways to prevent those changes or treat them.

“Since prenatal stress is common in many pregnancies, we want to develop methods to reduce its negative effects.”

The study is published online in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity .

  • Background:  Provide clear context for your research or innovation, including relevant literature that highlights the need for your work.
  • Objectives:  Clearly state the purpose of your project and what you aimed to achieve.
  • Methods:  Describe how you conducted your research or implemented your project, including the design and approach.
  • Results/Outcomes/Improvements:  Present the changes or findings from your work and their impact.
  • Significance/Implications/Relevance:  Discuss the broader implications of your work and how it promotes advancement in the field of GME beyond your local setting.

Seven studies examined the effects on their personal brands and product endorsements.

Influencers are often targets of online negativity, and how they respond to this feedback can have important ramifications for their personal brands and the effectiveness of their product endorsements. Recent research shows that one commonly employed tactic — turning off social media comments — can undermine influencers’ key assets: their persuasiveness, likability, and perceived sincerity.

Public figures, from Oprah to Selena Gomez , have restricted access to their social media comments in response to online criticism, whether on a temporary or permanent basis. This decision seems rational; those in the public eye are often highly scrutinized, and disabling comments can be a first line of defense to protect their mental health.

  • Freeman Wu is an assistant professor of marketing at Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on digital marketing, aesthetics and design, and social influence in consumption contexts.
