Animals have a major role to play in balancing an environment . Apart from that, in certain respects, they are useful to humans. People love to have a lot of animals in their homes. Among them, the dog really is an animal that you can see “my pet” as a companion in many homes.

The canine has been a human partner since prehistoric days, so we find these dogs worldwide. There are hundreds of these breeds. However, every variation has one common factor, honesty , and fidelity to the lord.

My favorite pet dog

I chose him, along with his few distinctive attributes. Bruno refers to a popular dog breed named Labrador retriever. Bruno is a full-bodied chocolate-colored body with such a black border across the neck.

Considering that they knew our families well, they readily decided. Little did we realize that after his arrival, our lives would forever change.

At midnight, the fire broke out during our home. He saw the risk that we were in. My pet dragged my quilt aside and kept me awake. He took me to a kitchen. To my utter surprise, I noticed that a heap with dry fuel was lying there, and then all the fire climbed to the roof, or at once, and the other house members climbed from sleep. They kept the fire under control in the next few minutes. This action of Bruno cherished us all the more.

My Pet Changed my Life

Certainly, Bruno has made us stronger human beings. We are much more humane for animals today. There was one incident where the stray dogs will hurt a kitten, or to our delight, Bruno rescued the little kitten or took her home.

My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. All animals are amazing but my favourite animal is the dog. Dogs are very loyal and make great pets. They love their owners and protect them from dangers. Dogs are largely carnivorous and eat meat, bones, organs, and some plant-based food.

All animals are unique and amazing in their own ways. I love them all but my favourite animal is the lion. Lions are wild animals and their natural habitat includes scrublands, grasslands, savannahs, and rocky hills. They were historically found in many places around the world but now, due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting activities, they are mostly found in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and reserves. However, they can still be found in the wild in Africa as well as in the Gir forest in Gujarat, India. 

Lions are majestic animals and are known as the ‘King of the jungle’. There are many different subspecies of lions, like Asiatic lions, Barbary lions, Congo lions, Transvaal lions, and African lions. Male lions have a beautiful signature mane around their neck and are much larger than the females of the same species. Male lions are known to act as the protectors of the pride while the females do all the hunting.

Pride is a family unit of lions that may contain a few lions, a dozen or so lionesses, and their adolescent and young ones. Each pride has its own territory and lions mark and defend these areas by roaring and scent-marking. These territories are fiercely defended against intruding lions and male lions may sometimes get into huge fights over their territories. 

Lions usually prey on medium to large animals like zebras, antelopes, hippopotamuses, and buffaloes but they can also kill and eat smaller or larger animals, depending on the need. They are also known to eat animals killed and left by other predators. Lionesses stalk their prey from nearby cover and then leap and lunge at its neck, biting and strangling it until it is killed. Members of the pride then come forward to feed on the kill. An adult lion can eat about 34 kilograms of meat at once. 

Lions usually breed once every year in captivity but in the wild, they breed once every two or three years. Lion cubs are born with dark spots on their fur coat which fade away as they mature. They can follow their mother after 3 months and can participate in hunting after 11 months.

However, they still need assistance and can not survive on their own before two years of age. The cubs become adults at about three to four years of age and while most female cubs become members of their mother’s pride, male cubs are forced out and become nomads.

But, I reasoned, having a dog would mean routine walks, and maybe that would be the linchpin to getting our whole family outside more often.

As my wife, Erica, and I looked into the attributes we wanted in a dog, like size, demeanor, and, maybe most important of all, low shedability, a labradoodle checked all the boxes. We brought Chloe home and, not long after, my commute went from four hours to four minutes, as I started working remotely. With more time for walks together, it wasn’t long before Chloe could handle a few miles around town, even on days when deadlines loomed (walking the dog, as any writer will tell you, is a highly effective form of procrastination). My daily walks with Chloe became family ones on weekends, which evolved into off-road hikes.

Mini kills rats, whenever she sees a mouse, she chases it and kills it. Thus, she does some good for us.

When I come back home, it becomes very cheerful and utters mews. It sits down under my table when I read in the evening. Sometimes it runs here and there and soon returns. It goes to my bedroom with me and jumps on my lap as if it wanted to sleep with me. After all, I like Mini very much.

Dogs Are the Best! But They Highlight Our Hypocrisy.

Over the past couple of decades, dogs have evolved into humans.

Well, at least that’s how we think of them now. Some 97 percent of U.S. pet owners consider dogs (or other pets) part of their families. A majority of dog owners celebrate canine birthdays, and nearly two-thirds report that they take more photos of their dogs than of family members.

If you’re dating someone with a dog, bring a biscuit: A majority of dog owners say they would consider ending a relationship if the pet disapproved of the partner.

America now has more dogs than children, and households are spending lavishly on pets. Warning that dogs may suffer storm anxiety, one company offers canine noise-canceling headphones for $200. Dog people spend thousands of dollars on oil paintings of Rover, not to mention large sums on dog spas, dog restaurants, dog bakeries and dog fashion.

“When your pooch is wearing clothes from Dog & Co., you know they’re going to be part of the most fashionable pack in town,” one site explains.

Then there are high-end dog foods and sophisticated health services and, if the chemotherapy doesn’t succeed, pet cemeteries. Because people don’t want to be separated from their pets, the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery outside New York City says that it has accommodated more than 800 people who asked to be buried with their pets.

I understand all this. Our last dog, Katie Kuvasz Kristof, was a saint (but not to squirrels), and if Pope Francis is right about dogs going to heaven , Katie is now barking in paradise. There are a few statues of heroic dogs around the world — in Tokyo , in New York City , in Scotland — and in the United States I would love to see more. Perhaps we could replace some statues of Confederate generals with ones of dogs who represented a higher standard of, er, humanity?

Do cats experience grief? New research suggests they might

If a human or another animal close to them dies, does a cat grieve the loss?

That was the question a team of researchers from Oakland University in Michigan set out to answer when they surveyed hundreds of cat owners about their cat’s behavior after another cat or dog in the household passed away.

The data showed that cats exhibited behaviors associated with grief — such as eating and playing less — more often after the death of a fellow pet, suggesting they may in fact have been in mourning.

“It made me a little more optimistic that they are forming attachments with each other,” said Jennifer Vonk, a professor of psychology at Oakland University, who co-authored the study, published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science .

“It’s not that I want the cats to be sad,” Vonk went on, “[but] there is a part of us, I think, as humans that wants to think that if something happens to us our pets would miss us.”

When animals mourn: seeing that grief is not uniquely human.

Though animals from elephants to horses to dogs have been shown to express signs of grief, less is known about the emotional life of the domesticated house cat. Vonk said she knew of only one other study on grief in domestic cats.

For their research, Vonk and her coauthor, Brittany Greene, surveyed 412 cat caregivers about how their feline companion acted after another pet in the house died.

They found that, after the death of a fellow pet, cats on average sought more attention from their owners, spent more time alone, appeared to look for the deceased animal, ate less and slept more.

Vonk said they didn’t observe “huge changes,” but the behavior changes they did see mirrored those that had previously been observed in dogs, which have evolved in a more social way than cats.

“For me, the most compelling finding is that when cats were reported to change their behavior in ways that would be consistent with what we would expect for grief,” Vonk said, “it’s predicted by things like the length of time that the animals lived together or the amount of time that they had spent together engaged in various activities or the quality of their relationships.”

Vonk acknowledged that there are some caveats to the research. An owner may have been projecting their own feelings of sadness on their surviving cat when reporting their symptoms, or the cat may have been trying to console the grief-stricken human. (Cat owners who felt more grief themselves reported more grief in their surviving cats, researchers found.)

The cat subjects may also have been behaving differently in response to a new household dynamic with one fewer pet, she added.

The researchers said more studies in this area would be necessary before drawing any conclusions. But Vonk, a cat owner herself, said her and Greene’s data suggest that cats may experience emotions akin to grief and sadness in ways that weren’t previously known.

“It does make me think maybe it’s more likely than I thought before that cats do have those feelings,” she said.

Are kill shelters actually so bad?

This is not a term that I love. I prefer “open-admissions shelters.” Most no-kill shelters that decide they really want to limit euthanasia also limit the animals coming in through the door. They are choosing to take healthier, better-behaved animals, and they are denying entry to animals that are biting people or have diseases that can’t be treated. Generally speaking, if a shelter takes in animals no matter the circumstances, it will always have higher euthanasia rates because it takes in animals that need euthanasia. To say no-kill is better — that’s not necessarily true. Because now you’re denying euthanasia to animals when that may actually be the best treatment plan for them. When an animal is truly suffering and there aren’t any other options for them, to make them suffer until they die is not ethical. There are ways of managing pain and suffering, but those are really intense, expensive, and time-intensive. Most of the time, animal shelters are not doing that because they don’t have the resources. They’re just allowing animals to become sick and to deteriorate. That is no-kill. And I don’t think that that’s good. It’s totally a marketing thing, an ethics-branding thing. — Dr. Lena DeTar

Is it okay to put my dog in a crate?

The most important thing to remember is that to use a crate successfully, you want to make it the dog’s favorite place in the world. You create a safe place. Especially for a fearful dog, that’s a really important thing to have.

If the dog looks at the crate as a positive place, it isn’t an imprisonment. You can look at their body language. Do they go in there on their own? Do they have their tail between their legs? If a dog is stressed, they won’t eat. If you toss a treat in there and they don’t eat it, that’s telling you something.

The worst is to put the crate down in the basement where no one’s around. Put it in the kitchen or living room where there’s lots of activity. You don’t want the crate to be a departure cue. When I’ve done it with my dogs, I’ve done it when I can be home with them. And you don’t want to force the dog into the crate — that’s the key. Whose needs come first at the vet — my pet’s or mine?

Veterinarians are servants to two masters. We have a patient, and we have a client, and fairly often, those interests do not align. Many years ago, my mentor, the bioethicist Bernard Rollin, painted two different models of veterinary practice. There was what he referred to as the pediatrician model, which is how most members of society perceive veterinarians — as patient advocates. But he also saw veterinary practice as what he referred to as the garage-mechanic model. And in that model, the veterinarian simply says, “Here are the options for what you can do with your animal, which is property according to the law. So go ahead and tell me what you want and I’ll do it.”

In the U.K., the code of conduct for veterinary surgeons makes quite clear that animal welfare is a veterinarian’s first priority, but American codes of conduct do not spell that out. Obstacle two is that veterinarians are hired by humans and paid by humans, not by animals. You have people who are economically dependent on satisfying the human being, and that naturally would lead to a circumstance where the veterinarian does not want to seem confrontational.

Years ago, I was faced with a circumstance where I believe I made the wrong decision. I had been seeing a husband and wife client who owned multiple Chihuahuas, and I was taking care of two of them with chronic medical conditions. The next time I saw the dogs, it was only the husband. In that visit, he relayed that he had lost his wife to cancer. And of course, I expressed my condolences, but each time I saw him subsequently, his capacity to care for those dogs had clearly been declining. On one occasion, he brought two dogs in with him. He told me he was living in a van, he’d lost his job, and he couldn’t afford to take care of all of the dogs he had. Two of his dogs were ten years of age and older, and he wanted me to euthanize them humanely so that their last memory of life is being with him. He didn’t want to give the dogs to a shelter. So I did it, and I regret it to this day. Euthanasia is intended to benefit the recipient of the death. If you’re not benefiting the recipient of the death, then that’s not really euthanasia. Did either of those two dogs have to have their lives ended? No, they didn’t have to. — Dr. Barry Kipperman

When is it okay to euthanize a problem dog?

Having worked in shelters, I’ve seen very dangerous dogs that should not be released to the public. Once, there was a dog that was impounded by animal control because he had bitten a small child in the face. This dog was unhandleable. But the owner found a rescue that said it would be willing to take the dog. He went to the kennel, handed the leash to the lady from the rescue, then drove off. Two minutes later, she came in and said, “You’re gonna have to quarantine this dog. He just bit me.” The next thing out of her mouth was, “It’s not his fault. I dropped my phone.” I think she was defending the fact that this dog had just bit her; it was her way of saying, “It’s okay, don’t euthanize him.” But it’s not normal dog behavior to bite you because you dropped your phone.

A dog like that is never going to be trustworthy. There’s no amount of training that will protect you from it. And there are not a lot of places for it to go — I don’t believe in sanctuaries for dogs because I think a lot of the time, they just turn into hoarding situations or a situation where an animal’s living in a cage for the rest of its life. But some rescue people are so blinded to the possibility that an animal could be aggressive enough that they are a danger to society. In the end, he was euthanized. — Dr. Heather Reeder

Do “easy” pets exist?

There’s this perception that getting a lizard or a bird is going to be cool and maybe it will be easier to take care of than a dog or a cat. Almost all of the health concerns we see in those exotic species happen because they’re not being cared for appropriately at home. One of the most common things I see in bearded dragons, leopard geckos, some of these little lizards, is something called metabolic bone disease. They don’t have appropriate vitamin D, as in they’re not getting the appropriate light. They basically just turn into these little cartilaginous creatures because they don’t have enough calcium to support their bones anymore. It’s really sad. They’ll go into multisystem organ failure. It’s 100 percent preventable if you just manage them appropriately. — Dr. Elaine Sheikh

Isn’t cooking for your pet the right and healthy thing to do?

No one’s going to recommend that you home-cook for your pet, unless under supervision of a veterinary nutritionist. People are so scared of commercial dog food and big pharma, because they’re owned by these huge companies. They feel like it’s toxic and giving their pet cancer and all these things. But pet food is really the best thing to feed your pet. Recently, I saw a cat. The owner was cooking for her cat because she did her own internet research. The cat came to me for a femur fracture with no reported history of trauma. She swore up and down that the cat had never had any trauma. I did full bloodwork because I was highly suspicious of a nutritional deficiency. And it confirmed that the cat had major electrolyte derangements and hypocalcemia that led to its fracture. The fracture was extremely difficult to repair in surgery because the bone was almost like butter. Still, this woman cared so much for her cat, and she just didn’t realize she was doing something wrong. — Dr. Carly Fox

Crocodile expert is jailed for sexually abusing dozens of dogs

A British crocodile expert was sentenced Thursday to more than 10 years in prison in Australia after admitting to sexually abusing, torturing and killing dozens of dogs.

Adam Britton, 53, a prominent zoologist who had worked with the BBC and National Geographic before his arrest in 2022, had pleaded guilty last September to dozens of bestiality and aggravated animal cruelty charges as well as the possession of child abuse material.

He filmed videos of himself torturing dogs to death and then shared the videos online under pseudonyms, the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Australia heard.

From November 2020 to April 2022, Britton sourced 42 dogs of varying ages and breeds, which he “tortured and sexually exploited for his own sadistic pleasure,” court documents said. At least 39 of the dogs were intentionally killed. Chief Justice Michael Grant had warned those in the courtroom at an earlier hearing that the details of Britton’s crimes were so “grotesque” that they could cause “nervous shock,” the BBC and Australian media reported.

The “unalloyed pleasure” Britton took in torturing the animals was “sickeningly evident,” the BBC quoted Grant as saying.

In a handwritten letter his lawyer read out to the court on Thursday, Britton said he took “full responsibility for the demeaning crimes” he had committed against the dogs.

“I deeply regret the pain and trauma that I caused to innocent animals,” he said in the letter, which was dated July 16 and seen by NBC News.

The zoologist told the court he was suffering from a mental disorder that caused intense, atypical sexual interests that could be harmful to others.

“I now acknowledge that I’ve been fighting a rare paraphilic disorder for much of my life,” he said, “and that shame and fear prevented me from seeking the proper help I needed.”

Britton added he would seek long-term treatment.

Britton grew up in Britain before moving to Australia about two decades ago to work with crocodiles. He built a reputation around his expertise in zoology and appeared alongside the renowned British naturalist and broadcaster David Attenborough while working on a BBC documentary series.

According to the court documents, Britton sexually abused his own pets, Ursa and Bolt, for years but sought out other dogs as well.

“My own dogs are family and I have limits,” he said in a Telegram message cited in the documents.

He targeted people online who were re-homing their pets, building a “rapport” with them and persuading them that he would take good care of them. Instead, he kept them in a shipping container on his property that was filled with recording equipment and that he called his “torture room.”

When the dogs’ former owners asked about them, Britton would send them old photos from before he started torturing them when in some cases they were already dead.

Britton’s crimes, which are estimated to have begun in 2014, went unnoticed until April 2022, when police executed a search warrant at his home outside the Australian city of Darwin. They had received an anonymous tip about an online video of dogs being tortured in which a bright orange City of Darwin dog leash was visible in the background.

Britton has been in custody ever since the search, during which police seized 44 items including sex toys, dog paraphernalia, cameras and weapons. They also found severed dog parts and bodies.

Britton was sentenced to 10 years and 5 months in prison, including time served. He will be eligible for parole in 2028, the court told NBC News, adding that he is banned from owning any mammals for the rest of his life.

Animal rights advocates speaking outside court on Thursday said Britton’s sentence was insufficient and that penalties for animal cruelty should be increased.

Designer dogs purchased during the COVID pandemic are among a growing number of pets being abandoned, as animal rescue organisations grapple with a spike in demand.

In Canberra alone, RSPCA ACT has about 200 pets on its surrender list – double the organisation's local capacity.

"This year compared to last year, there's been a 30 to 40 per cent increase of animals coming into care, so it's been really significant," chief executive Michelle Robertson said.

Pet ownership boomed during COVID while people were stuck at home.

"For the first time in our existence, we had more animals being adopted out than animals coming in," Ms Robertson said.

But the tide has turned, and the Canberra shelter does not have space to house all the animals in need of care.

Ms Robertson said some of the abandoned dogs were bought during the pandemic but were not properly trained or socialised.

"So you come home and your couch is shredded, or your garden has been dug up, because your pet doesn't receive sufficient mental stimulation," she said.

"And then some people say, 'it's too hard', and 'it doesn't fit in our lifestyle anymore', so they wish to surrender their pet."

The cost-of-living crisis is also taking a toll on pet owners — with the price of desexing, microchipping and unexpected vet bills quickly adding up.

"It's heartbreaking to have to make a decision whether you're going to be able to feed yourself or feed your pet," Ms Robertson said.

Pedigree pooches given up

The picture is similarly grim at ACT Rescue and Foster (ARF), an organisation that rehomes unwanted dogs.

With surrender rates skyrocketing and adoptions falling, some animals are remaining with foster carers for over a year before finding permanent owners.

President Angharad Lodwick said there had been a shift in the type of pets being abandoned.

"When I first started volunteering with ARF around 2020, most of the dogs that we would see … being surrendered were your staffies, your bully breeds," Ms Lodwick said.

She said they were now seeing lots of very small dogs, oodles and purebred dogs, like pedigree dachshunds and pedigree beagles.

"Very expensive dogs that four years ago would have been unthinkable to see on our website," Ms Lodwick said. 

"A lot of these dogs perhaps didn't come from registered breeders, turn up with health conditions and maybe some behavioural things that the owners weren't expecting when they rushed out and bought their COVID puppy."

Not an impulse buy

Animal organisations are pleading with people not to view pets as an impulse purchase.

Ms Lodwick urged prospective owners to do their research about suitable breeds and reputable breeders – or consider adopting a dog instead.

"It can be really surprising and disheartening when your very cute puppy starts growing up and they have some significant health issues, like skin conditions, eye issues, hip dysplasia, facial problems that can be very expensive to correct," she said.

"Try to look beyond falling in love with one puppy's face, but think about how to set that puppy up for a lifetime of success," she said.

"For some dogs, that could be 15 to 20 years with you."

When a person is admitted to the hospital and can no longer care for their pet, the animal is often surrendered to Palm Beach County's animal shelte r. Away from their longtime home and an owner they loved, these pets desperately need support and a new place to call home.

Peanut, a 7-year-old white cat with a gray-tipped ear, is one of those animals who has lost their home and their family.

Welcome to  The Palm Beach Post's Pet of the Week,  a series where we feature animals up for adoption in Palm Beach County in hopes of finding them a loving family. Palm Beach County's animal shelter selects a pet of the week for this series that is safe, friendly and ready to become a companion.

Since we began this series in February, 13 of our pets of the week have been adopted.

This week's pet is Peanut, whose gentle demeanor and maturity make him ready to be loved again by a new family. He has been in the shelter for 41 days.

Palm Beach County's shelter selects Pet of the Week from a pool of certified cats and dogs ready to be adopted

Leaders at Palm Beach County's animal shelter choose animals for The Post to feature in this series. They often choose longer-term residents or animals who are not adjusting well to living in the shelter.

Animals chosen are part of the shelter's "pet pal" program, in which volunteers repeatedly evaluate the animal's temperament, safety and friendliness before deciding whether they're ready for immediate adoption, according to the shelter's website.

Pets with illnesses or histories of aggression are not eligible for the "pet pal" program. Dogs with histories of biting humans or other animals are also not eligible.

How to adopt a cat or dog in Palm Beach County

You can start the adoption process in person or online.

To begin in person : Visit Animal Care and Control during normal business hours at 7100 Belvedere Road near West Palm Beach to fill out an application and meet the pets there.

To begin the process online:

• Use the pet's animal ID number (like the one listed above) to search them  on Animal Care and Control's online database.
• Click on the "Ready to Adopt? Click Here" link to the right of the pet's photo.
• Fill out the two-page  downloadable adoption application​  and email it to Animal Care and Control at  [email protected] .
• Once Animal Care and Control has reviewed your application, a team member will contact you to confirm that you have been approved to adopt. Submittal of an online application does not guarantee the pet's availability.

Adoption fees:  Adoption fees are just $4 for the entire month of August (or DOG-ust, as Animal Care and Control's website calls it) . Adoption fees are usually $60 for adult dogs, $75 for puppies and $50 for cats and kittens. Palm Beach County residents who are 55 years and older are offered a discounted adoption fee.

Note:  All animals adopted from Animal Care and Control will be spayed if female or neutered if male. They will be up-to-date on vaccinations, protected against fleas and ticks and microchipped.

About fostering:  If you are not ready for a long-term commitment, you may want to consider offering foster care to a pet. This is a great way to get the feel for becoming a pet parent, and it allows you and your new prospective pet to get to know each other.
