You'll come across both national and international conferences – national conferences are typically attended primarily by people living within the country which is hosting the event, while international conferences can attract visitors from all over the world.

Conferences tend to be the most prestigious forms of events as well, so they are the place where you most want the opportunity to present your work as a talk or as a poster. Speaking of which, conferences will usually involve a number of talks by prominent speakers in addition to poster sessions where researchers present their ideas and data in a visual format. When you attend a poster session, you can walk around and look at each of the different posters and stop to chat or to ask questions of the presenter as well. Presenters will stand next to their poster and will often have a short 5-10 minute explanation of the poster which they will give to anyone who asks.

If the conference is a large one, you will find concurrent events. This means that there might be two, four, or even more talks happening at the same time in different locations. The difference between a seminar and a workshop is that a seminar tends to be held within one institution or university, and will often a seminar will be a small group of people – say, between five and ten attendees – who come together to focus on a particular issue. Often seminars will be less formally structured than conferences, so one person might give a presentation but it will probably be brief. When organizing an academic event, you may be wondering what to call it - is it a conference or a symposium, or something else entirely?

Similarly, when registering as an attendee, you may find yourself thinking that the schedule for a conference looks a lot like that of a symposium you attended in the past, or vice versa.

While the terms conference and symposium are often used interchangeably for events during which experts in a certain field gather to exchange knowledge and ideas, there are some important differences that can help organizers set their event apart.

Using the most appropriate term for an event will not only allow your attendees to know what to expect, it will also help with organization and improve the chances of securing funding from potential sponsors who want to know exactly what they’re supporting.

In short, what is the difference?

The main difference between a conference and a symposium lie in the scope and size of the event. Conferences tend to be larger in size and wider in scope than symposiums, which are more focused on a particular subject or issue.

This also means that the target audiences are slightly different, with conferences attracting a more diverse group of attendees interested in a common topic, and symposiums appealing to a narrower and more expert audience.

Symposium differences

In contrast to large annual conferences, symposiums are usually one-off events, organized when the need arises for in-depth discussion of a particular “hot topic” of research, and as such, the themes may change from year to year.

The presenters and panelists at a symposium are usually a group of people who already know each other at least a little because of their shared interest and expertise in the topic of the symposium.

Students and trainees who attend a symposium are usually there as audience members to learn from more established researchers rather than to present their own work, since flash talks and poster sessions are less common at symposiums than conferences.

There may be a social event such as a cocktail reception or a speakers dinner following the symposium, but it is usually a more formal networking occasion rather than a party.

The submissions are peer-reviewed by more experienced researchers several months before the event takes place in order to give the presenters plenty of time to prepare.

Since large conferences cover broad fields of research and attract researchers with different expertise, the schedules are usually organized in themed parallel sessions. This means that there may be a poster session on one theme happening at the same time as presentations on another theme, and attendees can choose which sessions interest them the most.

This does not mean that a smaller event cannot be conference - what matters most is the structure and content, not the number of participants. Smaller conferences will tend to have a similar structure to large international conferences, but scaled down to fit the number of attendees and presentations.

Organizing a symposium

The schedule of a symposium tends to be relatively simple in that the entire event usually takes place in a single room or lecture hall over the course of one day. The days proceedings are usually organized so that every participant is able to attend every session without having to choose.

Symposiums may be more formal and prestigious than conferences since the subject matter is narrower and the presenters and panelists are usually world-renowned experts in the specific topic of the event.

Submissions are reviewed by a group of organizers who carefully select the topics, presenters, and panelists, based on the particular issue they would like the event to focus on. This is in contrast to the more traditional peer-review model used for conference submissions.

While there usually are one or two keynote lectures, the sessions of a symposium tend to involve more formal discussions and fewer single-speaker presentations than a conference typically would. This could include panels or roundtable discussions during which a moderator helps to keep the conversation focused on the topic of interest.

I'm a student with a question on conferences. What is the main difference between an oral session and a poster session? I want to know the difference in detail. I can understand the meaning a little bit, but what else can you tell me about the differences in the details?

In an oral session, speakers present their work one-by-one in a series of short lectures (usually no more than 30 minutes, and potentially as little as 10 minutes). Each speaker presents, takes questions for a few minutes, and is followed by the next one. These presentations are usually in a room with a seated audience, in a lecture-style format.

In a poster session, a number of presenters each prepare a poster (in a standard size) and mount them on boards in a large room. For a fixed period of time during the conference, all participants are invited to wander round the posters, reading and asking questions as they deem fit. Poster presenters typically stand by the posters and answer questions as people come by.

  • (16) Several contributions of this senna symposium bring complementary information of utmost interest.
  • (17) According to materials of the symposium at the XVI All-Union Congress of Microbiologists and Epidemiologists the author presents some trends in the improvement of teaching epidemiology, including renovation of the programs and teaching plans at the sanitary-hygienic faculty, development of practical habits and rationalization in the organization of practical work at the therapeutic and pediatric faculties.
  • (18) Many of these have been discussed elsewhere in this symposium.
  • (19) An attempt is made to lead into a more detailed discussion about the specific compromised hosts that are discussed in the rest of the symposium.
  • (20) The Oxford International Symposium on myocardial preservation provided an appropriate milestone and impetus to survey one aspect of operative myocardial preservation, namely blood cardioplegia, and to contrast it with the more popular crystalloid cardioplegia.

The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago throughout the week bringing you  the latest on the Democratic National Convention .

Delegates to the Democratic National Convention held a ceremonial — and celebratory — roll call vote to mark what they’d already made official earlier this month with a virtual vote: Vice President Kamala Harris’ selection as the party’s presidential nominee.

The unconventional roll call was facilitated by a DJ, with a unique songs playing as the call moved from state to state. "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd for Alabama, for example.

Here's what song each state chose.

Florida's song was "Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty (possibly a snarky reference to the Never Back Down, Inc., super PAC, set up to encourage Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' unsuccessful presidential candidacy?).

Loud cheers went up from the convention crowd as the voting moved from state to state. Participants announced their support for Harris and Walz, and touted their individual states' accomplishments, including the Hawaii delegation, which noted its status as the birthplace of former President Obama, and Illinois, where Obama won the first victory of his presidential campaign in the 2008 caucuses.

Several high-profile Democrats who’d been discussed as potential running mates for Harris participated in the roll call, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Participants also called attention to key issues of importance to Democratic voters, including reproductive rights and gun violence. Representing Nevada was a survivor of the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting .

Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood and daughter of the late former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, introduced Kate Cox, a Texas woman who became a Democratic activist after being turned away for an abortion under Texas law.

The count wrapped up with a nod to the candidates’ home states — California for Harris and Minnesota for her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz.

We are pleased to announce that you can now ask Copilot for data from your entire semantic model in Desktop ! Just tell Copilot what you’re looking for, and Copilot will query your model to answer your question with a visual.

To use this new capability, you need to have the Preview feature for “ Copilot chat pane in report view” turned on. If you already have done this there is nothing else that you to need to utilize this new capability.

Visual level format strings are here, providing you with more options to configure formatting. Originally built for visual calculations, the core ability that visual-level format strings provide is the ability to format visual calculations. Since visual calculations are not in the model, you could not format them, unless you were using them in data labels or in specific parts of the new card and new slicer visuals. With visual level format strings, you can!

Visual level format strings, however, are useful even without using visual calculations.

With the introduction of visual-level format strings, Power BI now has three levels for format strings:

  • Model. You can set a format string for columns and measures in the model. Anywhere you use that column or measure the format string will be applied, unless it’s overridden by a visual or element level format string.
  • Visual. This is what we’re introducing today. You can set format strings on any column, measure or visual calculation that is on your visual, even if they already had a format string. In that case the model level format string will be overridden, and the visual level format string is used.
  • Element. You can set a format string for data labels and for specific elements of the new card and the new slicer visuals. This level will be expanded to include much more in the future. Any format string you set here will override the format string set on the visual and model level.

These levels are hierarchical, with the model level being the lowest level and the element level the highest. A format string defined on a column, measure or visual calculation on a higher-level override what was defined on a lower level.

Since visual calculations are not in the model, they cannot have a format string set on the model level but can on the visual or element level. Measures and columns can have format strings on all three levels:

Let’s look at an example using a measure.

I have a Profit measure in my model, which is set to a decimal number format. To do this, you might have set the formatting for this measure using the ribbon:

Alternatively, you could have made the same selections in the properties pane for the measure in the model view or entered the following custom formatting code:

If you put this measure on a visual it now returns a decimal number, as expected:

However, on a particular visual you want that measure to be formatted as a whole number. You can now do that by setting the format code on the visual level by opening the format pane for that visual and the Data format options found there under General:

You can set a visual level format string by selecting the visual and opening the format pane. There, go General / Properties and then Data Format. Finally, open Format Options and enter the format string.

Now that same measure shows as a whole number, but just on that visual:

On top of that, you might want to use a scientific notation for that measure but only in the data label on a particular visual. No problem, you set the format code on the data label for that measure:

You can set an element level format string by leveraging the settings in the format pane. For example, set the display units for Data label values to Custom and enter a format code.

So now the total shows in scientific notation, but only in the data label and not in other places (such as the tooltip as shown below). Notice how the element level format is used in the data label but the visual or model level format string is still used for the other elements in the same visual.

For visual calculations the same principle applies but of course without the model level. For example, if you have a visual calculation that returns a percentage, you can now format it as such using the Data Format options in the General on the visual in the format pane:

The ability to set visual level format strings makes it much easier to get the exact formatting you need for your visualizations. However, this is only the first iteration of the visual level format strings. We are planning to add the settings you’re used to for the model level format strings to the visual level soon.

Since visual level format strings are introduced as part of the visual calculations preview, you will need to turn on the visual calculations preview to use them. To do that, go to Options and Settings  >  Options  >  Preview features . Select  Visual calculations  and select  OK . Visual calculations and visual level format strings are enabled after Power BI Desktop is restarted.

Dynamic per recipient subscriptions (Generally Available)

We are excited to announce the general availability of Dynamic per recipient subscriptions for Power BI and paginated reports. Dynamic per recipient subscriptions is designed to simplify distributing a personalized copy of a report to each recipient of an email subscription. You define which view of the report an individual receives by specifying which filters are applied to their version of the report. The feature is now available in Sov. Clouds as well.

Connect to data that has recipient email, names or report parameters.

Then, select and filter data that you want in your subscription. You probably only want to send emails conditionally. To do that, you can filter the data in the “Filter” pane.

You can select the recipient email addresses and the email subject from the dataset that you connected to by selecting “Get Data”.

You can then map your data to the subscription.

Then schedule the subscription and save it.

The subscriptions will be triggered based on the schedule that you have set up. Personalized reports can be sent to up to a thousand recipients! Learn more about Dynamic per recipient subscriptions for Power BI reports, and paginated reports .

Do you have reports that are too large to be delivered by email? Do you have reports that are eating into your email in just a few weeks, or do you need you to move it to a different location? You can now deliver Power BI and paginated report subscriptions to OneDrive or SharePoint. With this capability, you can schedule and send full report attachments to a OneDrive or SharePoint location. Learn more about how to deliver report subscriptions to OneDrive or SharePoint .

Updated Save and Upload to OneDrive Flow in Power BI

Beginning the first week of August, desktop users should see a preview switch starting in SU8 to turn on the updated Save and Upload to OneDrive experience in Power BI. To enable this, navigate to the Preview features section of Options in Power BI. Users will then need to select “Saving to OneDrive and SharePoint uploads the file in the background”.

With these updates, we’ve improved the experience of uploading new Power BI files to OneDrive, and easily upload new changes in the background.

For uploading new files, after navigating to the correct location in the OneDrive file picker and saving, a dialog box appears while the file is being uploaded. The option to cancel the upload is there if needed. This dialog will only show up the first time a new file is uploaded to OneDrive.

When new changes are saved to a file uploaded to OneDrive, the top of the toolbar indicates that the new changes are also being uploaded to OneDrive.

If you click on the title bar flyout in the toolbar, you can also now access more information about the file. Clicking “View your file in OneDrive” will provide a direct link to where the file is stored in OneDrive.

We are introducing the data limit capability to help you manage performance issues. This feature allows you to set the maximum data load for a single session per visual displaying only the rows of data in an ascending order by default.

To use this feature: 

  • Go to the ‘Filters on this visual’ menu in the filter pane.

The filter card features include: 

  • Removing, locking, or clearing filters.  
  • Hiding or showing filters.
  • Expanding or collapsing filter cards.
  • Applying filters.
  • Renaming and reordering filters.

Report consumers can see any data limits applied to a visual in the filter visual header, even if the filter pane is hidden.

Visuals, shapes and line enhancements

Over the past few months, we have been fine-tuning the visual elements of your reports, including columns, bars, ribbons, and lines. We have given you the ability to craft these Cartesians with precision. However, we noticed that the legends and tooltips were not quite accurate .

With the latest update, the legend and tooltip icons will now automatically and accurately reflect per-series formatting settings, such as border colors, shapes, and line styles. This makes it easier to match series to their visual representations. Additionally, we have added consistency to how per-series formatting is applied to line charts, column/bar charts, scatter charts, and other Cartesian formatting options for common items like error bars and anomalies.

DAX query view in the web

Write DAX queries on your published semantic models with DAX query view in the web. DAX query view, already available in Power BI Desktop, is now also available when you are in the workspace.

Look for Write DAX queries on your published semantic model.

  • Right-click on the semantic model and choose Write DAX queries .
  • Click on the semantic model to open the details page, then click Write DAX queries at the top of the page.

This will launch DAX query view in the web, where you can write DAX queries, use quick queries to have DAX queries written for you on tables, columns, or measures, or use Fabric Copilot to not only write DAX queries but explain DAX queries, functions, or topics. DAX queries work on semantic models in import, DirectQuery, and Direct Lake storage mode.

Write permission, that is permission to make changes to the semantic model, is currently needed to write DAX queries in the web. And, the workspace setting, User can edit data models in the Power BI service (preview) , needs to be enabled.

DAX query view in the web includes DAX query view’s way to author measures. Define measures with references, edit any of them, and try out changes across multiple measures by running the DAX query, then update the model with all the changes in a single click of a button. DAX query view in web brings this functionality for the first time to semantic models in Direct Lake mode!

This means when a user embeds a report containing the narrative visual in a solution where users must sign in – they will now be able to the visual refresh with their data. The first step on our Copilot embed journey!

When you embed a Power BI report in an application in the “embed for your organization” scenario, it allows organizations to integrate rich, interactive data visualizations seamlessly into their internal tools and workflows. Now this solution supports the Copilot visual. A sales team might want to embed a Power BI report in their internal CRM application to streamline their workflow. By integrating sales performance dashboards directly into the CRM, team members can easily monitor key metrics like monthly sales targets, pipeline status, and individual performance, without switching between different tools. This integration enables quicker access to actionable insights, helping the team make informed decisions, identify trends, and react swiftly to market changes, all within the secure environment of their organization’s data infrastructure.

  • App owns data:  A customer embeds a narrative visual on a website where users visit, and don’t need to sign in. Also known as  embed for your customer’s application .

Paginated Reports: Sharing of reports connecting to Get Data data sources made easy

We announced the ability to create paginated reports from Power BI Report Builder by connecting to over 100 data sources with the Get Data experience. You can learn more about Connect paginated reports to data sources using Power Query (Preview) – Power BI | Microsoft Learn. You no longer need to share the shareable cloud connection. You only need to share the report and ensure that those consuming the report have access to view the report. This update will be rolling out in the coming weeks.

Definition of Conference

The conference, as the name suggests is a formally structured meeting of several delegates at an arranged place and scheduled date, which is meant to ‘confer’ something about a subject, usually of common concern to all the persons present or attending it.

In finer terms, conferences are scheduled meetings held for consultation and exchange of information or discussion, which has a certain agenda or motto to serve.

In a conference, keynote presentation is used to provide information to all the attendees. Further, it has a number of short break sessions. It can take place at both small and high level, i.e. the people attending the conference can range from 50 to 1000 or more.

A conference brings those people together who have some shared interest in the topic which is going to be discussed. It is a form of participatory meeting, organised to discuss an issue, find out facts or solve a problem in hand. It usually continues for a few days, where deliberation or exchange of information takes place, on a specific subject or removal of differences takes place.

Definition of Seminar

The seminar can be described as a formal academic instruction session organized by an academic institution for the students or by a professional organization, to educate and guide the participants on a specific topic, or a series of different topics of a subject or convey a message.

There is no limit on the number of people attending the seminar, as it greatly depends on the level in which the seminar is conducted. If it is organized at a high level, then the number of participants will also be high, and vice versa.

The seminar aims at bringing together all the people to whom delivery of guidance or information is a must and a long lecture is given by one or more subject matter experts in the concerned discipline, who are guest speakers. The speaker usually presents and discuss the topic by way of videos, slide shows or other interactive tools.

It is followed by a dialogue, i.e. question-answer session between the participant and experts, which encourages critical thinking and new ideas.

Key Differences Between Conference and Seminar

The difference between conference and seminar is discussed in the points given below:

  • Conference refers to a type of get-together conducted formally to convey certain information on a particular topic by way of presentations, speech and deliberation. On the other hand, the seminar can be described as a long hour educational lecture provided to a particular group of people by one or more experts, for conveying information relating to a subject, or a message.
  • Seminars are basically interactive session, wherein Socratic dialogue takes place between the expert and the attendees. Conversely, Conferences are consultative in nature, arranged by an organization or committee, aiming to talk about or exchange their views on a specific matter.
  • Seminars are held to inform, educate, counsel, guide or train the participants, on a specific subject. As against, conferences are organized at the organizational, national or international level, which objects to present and discuss a certain matter with the attendees and get their opinion and views on that matter.
  • In conferences, the participation of the attendees is somewhat limited. On the contrary, in seminars, the people attending it, take an active part in the discussion, by questioning the expert on their doubts, and the expert, in turn, provides a suitable answer to those questions to clear their doubts.
  • Conferences are organized at the conference room of the organization, convention centre, or any other place such as hotel meeting space. In contrast, seminars are held at the institution itself, i.e. at the seminar hall if it is conducted on the institute level, however, if it is organized at a high level, a large space is required for sitting and so they are conducted in an auditorium or any other hotel space.
  • When it comes to duration seminars lasts for a few hours only, whereas conferences continue for one or more days, wherein there are several breakout sessions.
  • In conferences, the topic is presented by the speaker, who give their views to resolve an issue or decide something. On the flip side, in seminars, a lecture is given by the guest speaker, who is an expert in the field to introduce the topic to the participants, after which further discussion takes place between the expert and the participants.

In a nutshell, seminars are academic in nature, whereas conferences are not just academic, they can be held to serve other purposes also, which can be related to business, politics, economy, science, entertainment, sports and so forth, nationally or internationally.

4-h college and career pathways conference helps youths find their voices.

4-H College and Career Pathways

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension’s 4-H Center for Youth Development welcomed 50 middle- and high-school-aged 4-H’ers at its 22nd annual 4-H College and Career Pathways Conference on the MU campus this July.

Attendees were members of 4-H Youth Futures and Juntos clubs, staple programs of Missouri 4-H in its vision to prepare youths for successful transitions to adulthood. This year’s conference theme was “voice.” Participants learned communication and self-advocacy skills and connected with caring peer and adult mentors through authentic life skills workshops and networking events.

Conference activities featured the G.A.M.E. program led by Bryan Stephens, akaj “Coach BE,” founder of BEStwenty4 of Beaumont, Calif. Participants reported the program “help(ed) us reflect on our lives and appreciate them more.” Keynote speaker Edward Jones II from Kansas City’s Beyond the Field program encouraged youths to find their voices through leadership and a success-driven mindset. In a session on staying true, MU Extension Director of Integrated Marketing Communications Robert Jones taught youths about the power of long-term gains, growth mindsets and persistence.

Participants toured the MU campus and took a practice ACT test. They also enjoyed leisure time at the Rec Center and at the Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center. Additionally, they were able to practice marketing themselves during mock interviews with extension professionals and community partners. Interviewers included Sarah Traub, interim vice chancellor of extension and engagement; Alison Copeland, UM System deputy chief engagement officer; Gerardo Martinez, director of the Alianzas program at University of Missouri-Kansas City; Stephanie Femrite, assistant extension professor and assistant director of Missouri 4-H; Steven Krauss, associate professor and 4-H state specialist in youth and adult partnerships; Elisa Cardenas Oleas, research project analyst at MU’s Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems; and Jo Britt Rankin, extension professor in health sciences.

Other sessions throughout the week included a networking workshop by StreetGeekz Liberated from St. Louis, an elevator speech workshop by 4-H marketing and communications coordinator Sherry Grace, a personal finance course by Melanated Investments of Kansas City, and a choices vs. mistakes presentation by Edward Jones II from Beyond the Field.

The conference culminated in a formal banquet in the Bond Life Sciences Atrium. During the closing ceremony, participants were able to share their collaborative projects—creative college/career-related music videos. Eighty-five percent of youths reported that they were more confident about their future after the conference. One youth noted, “making good friends, … building a stronger network, and meeting new people is what I should do.”

On Saturday night in Carson, California, at Dignity Health Sports Park, super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco will step up his competition when he faces veteran Maciej Sulecki in the main event of the biggest boxing event of the weekend.

Pacheco, 23, is one of the more promising young fighters in his weight region. At 6'4", he possesses outstanding length for the super middleweight division.

In addition to a rare 79" reach and height, Pacheco has also demonstrated legitimate K.O. power. He has raced out to a 21-0 start to his professional boxing career with 17 K.O.s.

Most recently, Pacheco scored a unanimous decision win over Shawn McCalman in April. I spoke with Pacheco about his approach and current status heading into the battle with Sulecki.

"You know, right now I'm 21-0, 17 knockouts," Pacheco said. "I'm coming off a decision win earlier in the year. And, you know, my training camp is amazing. I was training for almost four months, and now I'm here in L.A. and I'm ready to go. My weight is good, I'm focused, and I'm just ready to get in the ring and show the world what I'm about once again."

Sulecki, 35, will have a sizable advantage in experience. He has amassed a 32-2 professional record, and the native of Warsaw, Poland, has scored 12 wins by K.O.

"Thank you everyone here and for everyone giving me a chance and my team for giving me a great boxing camp," Sulecki said during the last press event on Thursday before the fight. "I know that I will be the best test for Pacheco, I know that he has time but now is not his time. Maybe he will be a world champion, he does have the talent, but I know it's my time now. I'm ready for him and I hope he's ready for me, I know it will be a great fight. I know I haven't been in big boxing for awhile but I'm going to take him into the deep waters and drown him. I don't think he's ready."

As he mentioned, it's been a while since Sulecki has fought a noteworthy opponent. In his last fight, Sulecki won a unanimous decision over Rowdy Legend Montgomery.

In March 2019, Sulecki scored the biggest win of his career when he defeated Gabriel Rosado by unanimous decision in a slugfest that saw both men on the canvas twice. Later that year, Sulecki was easily out-boxed by Demetrius Andrade in a one-sided affair that didn't see the former win a round.

Since that fight with Andrade, Sulecki hasn't faced the stiffest competition, which makes Saturday's scrap potentially a big test for him as well.

Enzo Fernandez  and  Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall  are likely to partner one another in midfield with Romeo Lavia  and  Moises Caicedo  both doubts.

Filip Jorgensen  stated the first leg and is set to come back in for first-choice goalkeeper  Robert Sanchez .

In modern usage, colloquia are meetings, most often in an academic setting, in which attendees deliver talks on a topic or set of topics and then answer questions and enter discussion. Symposia are gatherings, not necessarily academic in nature, where a group of speakers discuss a topic, usually before an audience.

Traditionally, a colloquium is a gathering of academics in order to discuss a topic and interact with one another in the spirit of sharing information and perspective with one’s peers. Etymologically, colloquium comes from the Latin words for speaking or “to speak” (loqui, -loquium) and the prefix indicating “together.”

A symposium, on the other hand, is historically a drinking party in which attendees would revel together and discuss intellectual topics. Symposium comes from the Greek word symposion, a combination of words meaning “to drink” and “together.” The most familiar example of a symposium, in Plato’s dialogue of the same name, would be the drinking party recalled by Socrates where attendees discussed topics such as love and the consequences of philosophical thinking. As these terms are used in 2014, they are both gatherings of people for the purpose of discussing topics of interest, the salient difference being that a colloquium has a more formal, academic setting while a symposium is informal and social in nature.
