Universities in USA

Universities in the United States can be divided into two types: public universities and private universities.

Public universities are financed by the state in which they are based. Because of this, public universities charge less for students from within the state and more for students from outside the state, including international students.

Private universities are not financed by their state, but by private donors, research funds and tuition fees. For this reason, private universities generally charge higher tuition fees than public universities and require all students to pay the same amount, regardless of whether they come from out-of-state or abroad.

According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 , eight of the top ten universities in the world are located in the United States. These are:

Method of Study

The main difference between a PhD in the US and a PhD in Europe lies in the program structure. Whereas a European PhD essentially consists of a single phase lasting three to four years , an American PhD consists of three different phases, each with its own time frame.

• Phase One – The first phase lasts approximately two years and focuses on building a basic foundation for the doctoral student. This phase consists largely of taught components such as lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions, in which the student learns more about theoretical concepts and research methods within their discipline.
• Phase Two – The second phase can be considered an assessment phase, which runs both periodically alongside and at the end of the first phase. Here, students complete coursework and take exams on the basis of the material they have covered of which they must pass in order to proceed to the third phase.
• Phase Three – The third phase lasts approximately three years and resembles the European PhD structure. During this period, the student undertakes an independent research project, including forming a research design, conducting experiments, writing a thesis (more commonly referred to in the USA as a dissertation) and sitting a viva exam.

Teaching Requirements

Besides structure, a key difference between a PhD program in the US and in Europe is the focus on teaching requirements. In the US, doctoral students are expected to lecture, lead tutorials, host laboratory sessions, mark coursework and provide office hours for undergraduate students. Although students studying in European will likely contribute to these at some point during their study, this would normally be on a voluntary basis and involve less time commitment.

Research Flexibility

Another difference is project flexibility. In Europe, students typically apply to a PhD project predetermined by a supervisor, and although there may be some scope to adapt the project, depending on the funding provider , it will usually be limited to how the project is carried out rather than what it is about. In the US, however, a student applies to become a doctoral candidate within a department rather than applying for a particular research project. This is because students are expected to decide on their thesis topic (also commonly referred to as a dissertation research topic) near the end of their first phase after they have developed a better understanding of their subject and know where their interests lie. Therefore, research students in the US generally have more flexibility and influence in the direction of their research than students in the United Kingdom or Europe.

PhD Admission Requirements in USA

PhD admission into US universities can be highly competitive, both because of the limited number of positions and the large number of annual applicants.

The eligibility requirements for a doctoral program in the USA can generally be divided into four sections:

• Grade Point Average ( GPA ) – in the US, a scoring system known as Grade Point Average is used to measure academic ability. A student’s GPA is calculated as a weighted score of the subjects they study during their undergraduate degree; an equivalent score is calculated by universities for international applicants. Although universities rarely set minimum GPA requirements for doctoral study, it’s worth being aware that a GPA of 3.0 is equivalent to a UK second class honours (2:1); the typical entry requirement for UK universities.
• Graduate Records Exam (GRE) – most universities will require you to take a series of examinations known as Graduate Records Exams, which are used to determine your suitability for graduate study. GREs will assess your analytical, reasoning and critical thinking skills as well as your depth of your subject.
• Student aptitude – in addition to academic ability, US universities also look for characteristics of a strong researcher. These include traits such as engaging in the subject in your own time, e.g. by attending talks and conferences, demonstrating a high degree of independence and enthusiasm, and a general passion for your subject.
• English Language Proficiency – international students whose first language is not English must sit language exams such as IELTS or TOELF to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

International students will also require a F1 student visa in order to study in the US, however, you would typically apply for this after you have secured a place into a doctorate program.

How to Apply for PhD in USA

When applying for a PhD position at a graduate school, the application process will differ between universities, however, they will all typically ask for the following:

• Academic CV – a short document summarising your educational background and current level of experience .
• Personal statement – a document which outlines why you believe you are suitable for PhD study and your passion for the subject.
• Academic transcripts – a complete breakdown of the modules and their respective marks you have taken as part of your previous/current degree.
• GRE scores – a transcript of your Graduate Records Exam results.
• Research statement – a condensed version of a research proposal outlining your general research interests, if required.
• Recommendation letters – references from several academic referees who endorse your qualities as a person, your abilities as a student and your potential as a doctoral researcher.

Application Deadlines and Fees

Since PhD programs in the United States have taught components, they commence at the same time as all other taught degrees, and therefore share the same application deadlines and start dates. This corresponds to an application period that typically begins in August and ends in February. Admission decisions are typically made in April, with successful students starting in August/September.

When you apply to a graduate school, you will be expected to pay a fee for each doctorate application to cover the school’s administrative costs for processing your application. The fee varies from university to university, but typically ranges from $50 to $100 .

Funding your PhD in USA

It’s very common for a PhD student to receive financial aid in the form of a PhD scholarship; in fact, this will be the case for the vast majority of students in the US.

PhD funding can be ‘fully funded’ covering the student’s graduate program tuition fees, accommodation and living costs, or ‘partially funded’ covering the student’s tuition fee only in part or full.

Besides funding, a graduate student can take on an assistantship, such as a graduate teaching assistant or research assistant, in which they take on a part-time salaried position at the university alongside their studies.

Due to the international and collaborate nature of American universities, there are also a number of international scholarships available, such as the Fulbright Scholarship and the AAUW International Fellowship .

PhD Duration in USA

In the US, a PhD takes approximately 5 – 6 years to complete if studying full-time, and 8 – 10 years if studying part-time.

If you already have a Master’s degree, your first phase can be shortened by one year at the discretion of the university.

Cost of a PhD in USA

The cost of a PhD program in the US can vary considerably depending on the type of university, i.e. whether it’s a public or private university, the doctoral course, i.e. whether it’s in a STEM subject such as computer science, engineering or a non-STEM subject, and whether you are a home or international student.

In general, however, the typical annual tuition fee for a PhD in the US is between $12,000 and $45,000 per academic year.

As with any doctoral degree, additional costs may include travel for collaborations, bench fees, accommodation and living expenses.

4 best US unis to study PhD for international students

Getting a PhD is a long journey with many challenges, even dropping out — but getting one from one of the best US universities for PhD programmes can change your life.

Although the country is home to thousands of universities, not all award doctoral degrees. Only around 1,500 universities — out of 4,000 — offer PhD programmes.

In the US, the total length of a full-time PhD is usually four to six years. Students will spend one to four years on coursework and two to four years working on their dissertations.

This is not necessarily a bad thing — you will have more time to adjust and settle in, both of which are important before you embark on a tough and sometimes painful journey.

It’s a period of intense study where you’re also a researcher, responsible for forming your own hypotheses and theories that could be torn down by your supervisor and peers.

Leisure time will be scarce. Instead of hours with family and friends, you’ll be studying and working with books, meeting with supervisors and interviewing people.

But what will be in abundance is writing — and the deadlines that come with it.

The pay is not that great, either. PhD students in the biological sciences reportedly earn well below the basic cost of living at almost every institution and department in the US.

With these challenges in store, it’s important that you choose the best US universities for PhD programmes.

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) 

The first on the list and among the best US universities for PhD studies is MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) .  

It’s well-known for focusing on on scientific and technological research that works towards creating a better future for humanity. 

The institute is home to highly ranked graduate schools including the School of Engineering and Sloan School of Management.

It also offers an extensive range of doctoral degrees from Aeronautics and Astronautics to Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences , and Nuclear Science and Engineering . 

The university research expenditures have exceeded US$700 million a year, meaning you’re less likely to run into funding issues here.

MIT has received funding from government agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense. 

California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

California Institute of Technology , or Caltech, is a private university ranked #9 for Best National University Rankings 2022-2023 under US News and World Report.

Caltech offers top graduate programmes in engineering and areas of science including biology, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, mathematics and physics .

Its commitment to producing high-impact research has led to grants from institutions such as NASA, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Health and Human Services, among others. 

If you’re looking for financial aid , Caltech is one university that’s generous with its funding.

On average, more than 98% of graduate students offered admission at Caltech are offered a package of merit-based financial support that pays all tuition charges and provides them with a stipend.

What’s more, all doctoral students will also receive full financial support in the form of internal or external fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or a combination of these.

A separate application for requesting financial aid is not required.

Johns Hopkins University

Established as the first research university in the US, the university continues to place research at the heart of all its programmes and is still striving for research excellence since its inception in 1876.

To give you a better idea, there are a total of 29 Nobel Prize winners associated with the university.

Their discoveries include developing a blood test for cancer , landing the first spacecraft on an asteroid and developing the first effective treatment for sickle cell anaemia.

An insider’s guide to the world’s best programs—for both policy and academic careers.

The Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) Project at William & Mary’s Global Research Institute has long partnered with Foreign Policy to create a reputational ranking of academic programs in international relations. Over the past two decades, our process has remained simple and consistent: We ask IR professionals what they think are the five best places to study for an undergraduate, terminal master’s, and doctoral degree.

In our most recent survey on the topic, conducted from October 2022 to January 2023, we received responses from 979 IR scholars across the United States, 294 staff affiliated with U.S. think tanks, and 291 policymakers who worked in the U.S. government during the George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations. For the first time, we also asked respondents which Ph.D. programs are best for a student interested in a policy career, rather than an academic one. As the number of tenure-track positions in universities declines and the demand for expertise within the policy community increases , this question is more relevant today than ever before.

Undergraduate Programs

These results should look familiar to those who follow national undergraduate rankings. Ivy League schools, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, and a few large public universities were favored across the board. But a handful of outliers punched well above their weight: Georgetown University, American University, George Washington University, Tufts University, and William & Mary all placed much higher here compared with their rankings in U.S. News & World Report , widely considered the most influential college ranking in the United States. In fact, Georgetown stands out as the top undergraduate choice among policymakers and think tank staff.

Master’s Programs

For master’s students hoping to pursue a policy career, all three groups we surveyed expressed a preference for programs on the East Coast. Only a few schools located west of the Rocky Mountains made the top 20 in each list. Respondents also highlighted several options outside the United States in the top 20: IR faculty included four international programs, while policymakers included five—all located in Europe—and think tankers included eight, one of which is in Asia.

Ph.D. Programs for Academics

IR faculty members’ rankings of Ph.D. programs have proved remarkably stable over the years. Between our 2017 survey and our most recent one, no top 15 program has moved more than one spot in either direction; in fact, most held the same rank. Additionally, policymakers and think tank staff appeared to value academic Ph.D. programs located in Washington, D.C., and outside the United States much more than U.S.-based IR scholars did.

Ph.D. Programs for Policymakers

When asked about doctoral students pursuing a policy career, all three groups we surveyed showed a preference for institutions with strong connections to Washington. Schools such as George Washington University, Georgetown University, and American University are ranked higher for students pursuing policy careers than for those hoping to enter academia. Conversely, institutions such as the University of Chicago and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are ranked lower for policy careers than academic ones. This shift highlights the importance of proximity to policy centers and the availability of practical engagement opportunities in shaping perceptions of a program’s value for a policy-oriented career in IR.

Advice to Prospective Students

Prospective students would do well to explore the specific features of various programs rather than focusing solely on a broad reputational ranking, which tells us little about a program’s regional, functional, or methodological strengths. For example, both academic and policymaker respondents who specialize in international political economy and/or trade policy ranked the London School of Economics master’s program higher than respondents who focus on security policy. Similarly, academics who specialize in the study of Latin America ranked the University of California, Berkeley Ph.D. program higher for an academic career than their non-Latin Americanist colleagues.

Still, prospective students should keep in mind that reputation matters. Although reputation may be an imperfect indicator of quality, it is a strong indicator of perceived quality within the field. A program’s standing can have conscious and unconscious effects on graduate school admissions committees, scholarship committees, and hiring managers in the public, private, and higher education sectors. For this reason, our ranking provides a systematic measure of these perceptions to assist prospective students in making informed choices as they plan for their future.

I moved to Thailand for graduate school. The free degree I earned isn't recognized in the US, but it inspired my side business.

• Charissa Enget, 29, was granted a full-ride scholarship to earn a master's degree in Thailand.
• She thought the campus was in Bangkok, but it was in Khampaeng Saen — a district two hours away.
• After returning to the US, she found out the degree was not American-accredited, but it inspired her side business.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Charissa Enget, a content creator and cybersecurity architect who gained her graduate degree in Thailand. It has been edited for length and clarity.

My family moved around when I was a kid. We spent two years in China and a few more in Venezuela. Those experiences sparked my interest in living abroad again as an adult.

So, after I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Oklahoma State University in 2017 and was trying to decide where to go for a graduate degree , I thought it could be the perfect opportunity.

I was open to moving anywhere and also applied to schools in Spain and New Zealand, but Kasetsart University in Thailand was the first school to offer me a full ride for the two-year Master of Engineering program.

My mom freaked out about how far away I would be. She didn't come around until the day we went to the airport. Her anxiousness had gotten me a bit scared of going as well. But I had come up with a plan: if things went south, I would just ditch school and spend all the money I'd saved on a long vacation .

I thought my school was in the capital, but found out it was in the countryside

When university representatives picked me up at the airport and told me it would be a two-hour ride to the campus, I was confused.

"What do you mean it's a two-hour journey? It's only 20 minutes away," I said. They looked at each other and started laughing.

They replied, "That's the Bangkok campus. You're going through the Kamphaeng Saen campus!"

My whole stomach dropped. I had no idea what I was getting into. When I applied for the scholarship, I thought Bangkok was the only campus.

It turns out that the school has three other campuses. I had misunderstood the university website, probably because it's mostly in Thai, and had been reading the translated copy.

I felt lonely for the first few months

Since the students on campus didn't speak English, my professor was the only person I could talk to. Sometimes, I would go for days without speaking to anybody except my mom on the phone.

Depending on the class, the professors would either teach in Thai and translate it to English for me, or I just got taught one-on-one.

I thought about quitting a few times during the first couple of weeks but decided to give myself six months and try to learn the language . My plan was that if I still hated it, then I could quit.

I tried my hardest to learn Thai. I studied it for about two hours every day on an app called ThaiPod101. After four months, I understood my first spoken sentence. Six months later, I could have basic conversations.

I made some good Thai friends, and that made life way better. I got enveloped in Thai culture because I could talk to them. My Thai friends would invite me to their houses on the weekends to have dinner with their families. They accepted me with open arms.

The university experience was different from what I was used to

In my Thai university, they were taught engineering from the ground up. For example, they would learn how to program a scoreboard and make it work because they build everything to save on cost. So, I learned more in-depth about all these technologies.

My American university felt more innovative . As an undergraduate in the US, I had to think creatively to solve engineering problems. In Thailand, they preferred that I follow procedures and instruction manuals.

The cost of living was also much lower. I didn't cook at all for two years, as every meal costs around $1.50.

I lived in an off-campus dorm, and it was fully furnished with a TV, refrigerator, bathroom, and balcony. The cost was covered by my scholarship.

Without a scholarship, the graduate program would have still been more affordable than pursuing a graduate degree in the US.

According to Kasetsart University's  website , master's students pay around $1,200 to $1,500 a year for tuition and an additional international student fee of $512 per semester.

In comparison, tuition for a similar program at Oklahoma State University for out-of-state students, excluding other fees, is $17,890 a year.

I've moved back to the US but travel back to Thailand often

After completing my graduate degree in 2020, I returned to the US. Although my master's degree was not American-accredited, it did make for good conversations during interviews. I now work as a cybersecurity architect.

I've also started a side business, where I run group tours of around 20 people to Thailand once or twice a year. We visit places like Chiang Mai and Bangkok to see waterfalls and hill tribes and just experience Thailand together. I charge around $1,800 to $2,000 per person, depending on the destination.

Now, I live in Houston, and in my two years there, I've only met two of my neighbors.

But in Thailand, people were always outside everywhere I walked, and they talked and got to know me.

I liked that about living in Thailand — you're never lonely there.

A2i Immersion Week 2024 at NC State University: Bridging Academia and Industry

On June 24-27, NC State University held its signature A2i Immersion Week event, where 50 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from across 24 different departments immersed themselves in an unparalleled experience designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The A2i Immersion Week provided a dynamic platform for these emerging professionals to explore their future careers in industry, guided by leading industry experts and supported by a robust lineup of sponsors— BASF , BD , Hitachi Energy , Milliken & Company , ParkerLORD , and Syngenta .

Over the course of four intensive days, participants delved into key topics essential for a successful transition from academic to industry roles. The agenda was packed with insights on Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in job searching, professionalism in the workplace, and the intricacies of strategy, vision, and teamwork within industry settings. A significant portion of the week focused on understanding the product life cycle, rotational programs, and navigating management and leadership tracks.

The week was greatly enhanced by the involvement of our six key sponsors. Each sponsor offered their unique perspective, with industry leaders leading presentations and participating in networking sessions throughout the event. This interaction not only provided participants with invaluable feedback and insights but also served as an excellent opportunity for companies to showcase their organizations. For graduate students, it was a chance to connect directly with potential roles and opportunities within these organizations, bridging the gap between academic training and real-world application.

Interactive Learning and Networking

One of the highlights of Immersion Week was the interdisciplinary case study that participants undertook. Divided into teams of varying majors, the scholars navigated through the stages of the product life cycle, applying their academic knowledge to practical industry scenarios. This hands-on experience allowed them to collaborate across disciplines, mirroring the real-world teamwork they’ll encounter in their careers.

In addition to the case study, participants refined their communication skills through personalized feedback on their elevator pitches, research pitches, and use of the STAR technique for interview questions. Our sponsors and campus partners were instrumental in this process, joining us to provide valuable insights and feedback. Their involvement was crucial in helping participants articulate their skills and experiences more effectively to future employers.

Another key highlight was the etiquette dinner held on Thursday evening. This event provided participants with a valuable opportunity to practice professional dining etiquette in a formal setting. The evening focused on the nuances of business dining, including table manners, conversation skills, and networking strategies. This experience was designed to help participants make a positive impression in future professional settings and enhance their overall professionalism.

The Career Fair: A Gateway to Opportunities

The culmination of A2i Immersion Week was the career fair held on Friday, June 28, which welcomed over 350 graduate students and postdocs from NC State University. Open to the entire graduate student body and postdoc community, the event featured 15 companies, including All4 , ARA , BASF , BD , EPRI , Hitachi Energy , M3 , Milliken & Company , ParkerLORD , Sandia National Laboratories , SANVEO , Syngenta , City of Clayton , US Army , and US Navy . The fair provided a valuable opportunity for participants to explore potential career paths and network with industry leaders. This successful career fair was made possible through a strong partnership with the university’s Career Development Center.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many considering Immersion Week one of the most impactful experiences of their graduate careers. One participant said:

It has been an amazing experience. Kudos to everyone involved. Most important workshop I’ve taken!

They appreciated the crucial insights and connections gained as they prepare to transition into industry roles. The program not only deepened their understanding of industry dynamics but also equipped them with the tools and confidence necessary for a successful career shift.

Looking Ahead

As the week wrapped up, the consensus was clear: A2i Immersion Week was a resounding success. The collaborative efforts of NC State University and its sponsors have continued to set a high standard for preparing graduate students and postdoctoral scholars for industry careers. The knowledge gained, connections made, and skills developed during this immersive experience will undoubtedly pave the way for the next generation of innovators and leaders.

ChBE PhD student awarded Quad Fellowship

The Quad Fellowship aims to build connections among the next generation of scientists and technologists by fostering academic excellence and promoting cross-cultural understanding. The award will support Whittaker's research on catalytic phenomena in electrochemical devices such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and batteries. With the expected rapid increase in renewable electricity, Whittaker's research aims to develop rigorous experimental and theoretical frameworks to understand what drives reactivity at electrochemical interfaces and leverage those insights to design superior catalysts for a more sustainable future.

"I am extremely proud to represent Australia as a scientist at this scale," Whittaker said. "I come from a small town in rural Australia, where this career path is relatively uncommon. It excites me to know that my research, which is mostly directed at engineering renewable energy systems, will contribute to the long-term protection of vulnerable rural communities like mine."

Now in its second year, the Quad Fellowship supports exceptional master's and doctoral students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the United States. Initially supporting students from the four Quad countries, the program has expanded this year to include students from various ASEAN countries.

Tell us about your background/experience.  

Hello everyone! I am thrilled to be joining the Organizational Psychology PhD program at Michigan State University. While I'm excited to start my PhD program in the U.S., I also have some concerns about adapting to a new environment since I've only ever lived in South Korea. I would greatly appreciate it if you could share any insights about the new culture! 

During my master’s degree, I participated in several research projects that explored the safety climate in hospitals, the relationship between daily micro-break and well-being after work, and the positive effect of cooperation across diverse generations. Based on these experiences, I have developed a keen research interest in research areas related to occupational health psychology. 

In addition, I am interested in learning and applying new statistical methods. That is why I minored in applied statistics during my undergraduate and took as many statistics courses as possible during my master’s degree. Despite these efforts, I still want to delve into advanced statistical methods (e.g., network analysis, multi-level analysis, and computational modeling) and to gain more research opportunities. I am anticipating collaborating with many faculty members and current students on various projects. 

I am happy to meet all of you and hope to form good relationships with the MSU OP members! 

Why grad school?  

Although I encountered some difficulties at times, developing my own research was an amazing experience. I feel like I am continuously learning and developing myself through this process. Therefore, I applied for the PhD program. 

What do you hope to research while you're here?  

There are two main research topics that I would like to study during my doctoral degree. 

First, I am planning to research topics related to occupational health psychology (OHP). I am interested in both employees’ psychological and physical well-being (e.g., eating habits, quality of sleep, and physical activity after work). Thus, I want to examine which organizational factors (e.g., workload, social support, and break time during work hours) affect employees’ well-being in their life domain and investigate the specific mechanism involved. 

Furthermore, I aim to investigate the well-being of older workers, with a specific focus on their distinct characteristics. I endeavor to explore the predictor of successful adaptation of older workers and, ultimately, to suggest how we can help them maintain their performance and well-being. 

Second, I intend to investigate strategies for improving the accuracy of measurement. To achieve this, I want to study item response theory (IRT) in depth. Additionally, I would like to examine ways to overcome the limitation of relying solely on self-report surveys by incorporating additional methods such as game-based assessment and text analysis. 

Why are you interested in Organizational Psychology?   

Through an internship in my third year of university, I realized the profound impact of work on one’s life. Specifically, dynamics in organizations, such as the interaction between members and leaders or the relationship between work and life domains, fascinate me the most about organizational psychology. 

In addition, I believe that majoring in organizational psychology would be a good chance for me since I could comprehensively learn about measurement, psychometrics, and advanced statistics. 

Therefore, I decided to pursue a doctoral degree in organizational psychology. 

In your free time, what do you like to do?  

In my free time, I enjoy exercises such as Pilates, yoga, and weight training. Additionally, I love watching video clips about pandas or the history of war on YouTube. (Actually, I am a BIG fan of the panda named Fubao. I think she is the cutest panda in the world!)

Pharmacy launches online graduate pharmacometrics program

When Carrie Hoefer became director of online programs at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in January 2023, her main goal was to get an online version of the pharmacometrics and personalized pharmacotherapy (PPP) graduate program up and running by fall 2024.

With 13 students currently enrolled for the 2024-25 academic year, almost three times the number for the on-campus program, she appears to have achieved her goal.

“We already have a wonderful PPP program on campus that really hits a lot of the boxes for students who recently earned their undergraduate degrees in biology or chemistry or pharmacy,” says Hoefer, who also serves as associate dean for undergraduate programs and clinical assistant professor in the pharmacy school. “I really wanted to create an asynchronous online program for working professionals across the country and even other parts of the world.”

PPP is a rather niche discipline that includes pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD), the study of how drugs move through the body and how the body responds to specific drugs, respectively.

Fewer than half of U.S. pharmacy schools include these two subsets of pharmaceutical science and only one other institution in the country — the University of Maryland — offers an online master’s degree in pharmacometrics and personalized pharmacotherapy, Hoefer points out.

Two new online programs in two years

Enrollment in UB’s online master’s program represents a near three-fold increase over the campus version of PPP , which began in 2018 under the direction of SUNY Distinguished Professor William Jusko. Hoefer credits this to the program’s ability to recruit graduate students from across the country.

“We are seeing the online PPP program attract everyone from recent graduates to working pharmacists and even medical doctors who want to gain expertise in this discipline,” Hoefer says.

Hoefer also created a two-year online graduate program in pharmaceutical sciences that will launch in fall 2025. This master’s program, which immerses students in diverse aspects of drug action — from drug discovery to drug evaluation — also aims to attract more professionals who need the flexibility of an asynchronous online program.

“We are so pleased with the work that Dr. Hoefer has accomplished in just a short time,” says Gary M. Pollack, professor and dean of the pharmacy school. “She is helping our pharmacy school continue on its upward trajectory with in-demand offerings and increased enrollment. Both the pharmaceutical sciences and the pharmacometrics and personalized pharmacotherapy programs will create a pathway for current research professionals, as we well as new graduates, to advance career opportunities in drug discovery, evaluation and development.”

Individualized drug treatment

“At UB, we’re very well known for pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics,” Hoefer notes.

Pharmacometrics goes a step further with more quantitative modeling for a drug’s journey through the body.

“Pharmacometrics is really tracking everything to do with taking medication — from being absorbed in your body to being distributed, metabolized and excreted,” Hoefer explains. “It exams the link between biology, the physiology of an individual, and pharmacology to design more individualized dosage regimens of not only current prescription medications, but also those currently in clinical trials.”

The growing popularity of genomics and DNA ancestry tests such as 23andMe dovetail with this branch of pharmacy, which is more focused on how drugs affect an individual.

“It makes sense to focus on an individual’s DNA manual and how that manual of the body can have different responses to the drug,” Hoefer says.

The overall model of the drug can continue to be individualized based on multiple co-variables, such as age and ethnicity.

Pharmacometrics, she explains, combines multiple facets of drug design, development and trial information to aid in regulatory decisions and predict undesired side effects of adverse drug reactions.

New micro-credential

Having expertise in the PPP discipline makes graduates more attractive to employers.

“Companies are seeking our students because we are the powerhouse of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and now pharmacometrics, and this new program encompasses all of it,” Hoefer says. “A lot of employers are looking for individuals who have this pharmacometrics background because it’s looking at each stage of the drug development process in a quantitative way.”

The pharmacy school also offers a micro-credential program in pharmacometrics modeling, which provides a snippet of the graduate program over three semesters. A dozen students began this micro-credential in spring 2024 and are currently on their way to becoming the first cohort to earn this new micro-credential. Several students are considering continuing on with the master’s in PPP following their completion of the micro-credential, Hoefer adds.

“What we’re seeing with our online programs are people who really want to move up in their jobs or excel in their careers,” she says. “They just need that additional certificate or diploma that says, ‘I’m an expert in this.’”
